Ahi tacos
Kathy T.

Had higher hopes for dinner at the Grill. Beautiful atmosphere and hotel , nice looking menu but overall a disappointing meal. I had the ahi tacos ---tasty but clunky to eat. The ahi was rectangular ---and not nearly as pink as I'm used to so flavor was not there --- and thick and impossible to eat as a taco---sounds crazy but it would have been better if a little smaller and thinly sliced with more slaw so the tortilla could wrap around . So it was good just not great. My BF had the pasta with prawns ---3 huge prawns but they were overcooked like the pasta which was really gummy. The server checked in quickly to see how things were , and I gave her a weak "good" but my partner had a mouthful and she took off so he wasn't able to let her know that things were not to his liking. Service was attentive with water but again, just not great meal. I also thought it strange that 20% service charge was included in the check because I put it in our room , so keep rhetorical in mind . Bread would have also been nice to enjoy while waiting for quite a long time for the dinner . I'd try agin and opt for the steak salad !

Prime Rib French Dip Sandwich, Au Jus, Horseradish Cream, Fries

My partner & I had a date night at The Grill this past weekend and it felt like a really special place... I just can't figure out why it was completely empty. We made a 6:30pm reservation for Saturday night, and while there were a few people in the bar/lounge area, we were the only patrons in the restaurant for the entire hour & a half we were there. It was Thanksgiving weekend, so there's that... but it was just really odd. Overall, the food was phenomenal. My partner ordered the ribeye and he was really pleased with the cut of beef, the way it was cooked, etc. I ordered the prime rib French Dip sandwich and it dethroned my long-standing favorite from Los Altos Grill (Los Altos) and Rutherford Grill (Napa) of the Hillstone Restaurant Group. I mean, it was really freaking good! I think the reason for only 4 stars is the service lacked a bit throughout. The staff outnumbered us 4:1 easily... so it was strange that our water glasses ever got empty, or we had to ask for to-go boxes or our check. Our server brought me a box, but no containers for the au jus or horseradish cream. The Grill feels like fine dining, and I was expecting a higher level of service... if for nothing else, because we were the only people in the restaurant. I'll be back for that French Dip, but I'd probably eat in the bar/lounge next time.

The Grill in the Hotel Diamond, Chico, California. Feb.2024.

We ate here for brunch the first time on our latest trip to Chico and had a mixed experience, although one which shows promise and it seems possible that the defects we encountered were due to a bad day. The place is nice and attractive inside, on the ground floor of the lovely Hotel Diamond in the heart of downtown. There is a nice bar area and a separate dining area. So far, we only had brunch this one time. One of us got the french toast, which had nice flavour and good bread with a nice chewy crust but softer interior. However, it was a little undercooked. 3.5 stars. Had it been prepared just a little better, probably 4 stars easily. The rest of us got the prime rib eggs benedict, again a dish which was fundamentally good but a bit sloppy in the execution. The Hollandaise sauce was good, the eggs nicely cooked, and the prime rib nicely shredded and cooked well, with some slight touches of crispy edges but otherwise nice and pink and not overcooked. The potatoes which accompanied were also good with nice flavour and crispy but not overcooked for two of us. However, the English muffins seemed like they were not toasted at all, being soft, blond, and chewy. Also, one of us had potatoes which were badly overcooked and hard, while for all three of us the dish came out barely lukewarm, as if it had been sitting, and the surface of the Hollandaise was dryish and dull, also indicating that it had been sitting. 3.5 stars, but could easily have been 4.5 had they been prepared properly and came out hot. Related to this, it took a very , very long time for our food to get there after we ordered it and then only two of us were served at first. The other two dishes came out long after,by which time the first two of us were halfway through our meal. We noticed several other tables suffering the same problem, or worse. One table of 4 which we saw had only one person served for some time and by the time the rest got their food, she was already finished with hers. From where we sat, we noticed that there appeared to be confusion or discussion among the servers and cooks at the kitchen area, which seemed related. Coffee was good and strong but came out unreliably also. Service was friendly. We would be willing to go back and there is definitely promise in the food quality, while at this time we feel that it is very possible that this was simply a bad day. However, as things stand, we could not give it more than 3 stars and if this proves to be normal after future visits, we probably would not go back due to the issues noted.

Steak Frites $36 (Dec 2023)

Again excellent service this time thanks to our waitress Sierra as well as the other wait staff/helpers. Since our last visit 5 months ago they've rearranged a few tables/seats and all we four of us liked the changes. Our Happy Hour (h.h. is until 6pm) Green Beans were wonderful. $6 The Classic Wedge salads were very nice. $12 Our Steak Frites were very good. $36 My wife's Grilled Flat Iron Steak Salad looked as she said tasted great. $22 The Happy Hour Cab wine was descent. $8 (h.h. price) The Happy Hour Margarita was pretty good. $8 (h.h. price) Overall we were left feeling like we'll return for dinner sooner than the last time of 5 months ago that we ate here. Nice cloth napkins, plates, etc and silverware. Keep it up The Grill and thanks! p.s. I hope you'll add baked potatoes to your menu. :-)

Cobb Salad with house made Balsamic dressing. Just amazing!

Fabulous restaurant in The Hotel Diamond. Staff is wonderful - friendly and welcoming. Food was out of this world! We can't wait to return. I had the Cobb salad for lunch with Balsamic (house made) dressing and it was, hands down, thee best Cobb Salad I've ever had! The accompanying focaccia (house made) was AWESOME! Thank you so very much for being so thoughtful and responsive to your clients!

The host told us they didn't have any roses but came out with a little bouquet! For the dinner part, we were expecting a little more. The complimentary cornbread wasn't great in our opinions, but I'm sure others may like it. It's clearly homemade and comes with 3 different butters to put on top. We ordered the Salmon and Smashburger and they were both definitely over priced for what it tasted like. The salmon didn't have a lot of seasoning so it sort of tasted like something we'd give our cat. The sweet potato's on that dish were also not the best. The smashburger, in my opinion, would've tasted better if I got it from In N Out across the street. The entire burger just tasted like meat..no seasoning and there was maybe a drop of their aioli on the burger so all in all it just wasn't the best. I would've had a better experience at In N Out. We also ordered the Wagyu meatballs and never received them. We thought it was taking a minute to cook but all we got instead was the check..he didn't even ask us if we wanted dessert. We had wanted to check out their dessert menu and possibly get their strawberry shortcake but I guess that wasn't in the cards for us. We also ordered a cocktail and mocktail. My wife's mocktail (Kava Mule) was great! My cocktail (Horchata Mai Tai) was genuinely the strongest drink I've ever had. The flavor was nice if you could get past the amount of Bacardi they poured in there. Every drink I took felt like I was taking a shot. So with all that being said, unfortunately we won't be returning to Rancher's Daughter. Between the bland and expensive food, the forgotten about meatballs, the check rushed to our table, and the drinks..it's just the not the place for us.

We really had high hopes but were let down. We shared the complimentary corn bread, the arancini, and the hummus crudite. I had the turkey Thanksgiving dinner plate and my husband had the tri tip Thanksgiving plate. The starters were okay - cornbread was a very light texture and the butters that came with it weren't that good. The arancini was fine, just nothing too special but didn't come out very hot. The hummus didn't taste like much and came with a ton of bell peppers, Kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, and some pita. The turkey dinner was not good. The mashed potatoes and the turkey were okay. The root vegetable medley was not good and the stuffing was terrible, it was so mushy and weird. The gravy on the mashed potatoes already had a film over it like it had been sitting out for a while and was not hot at all. I also got an espresso martini that was not good. My husband got the horchata Mai tai - he liked it. My husband said the tri tip was okay but overall the plate was disappointing. They also mentioned on the phone that they would give us a complimentary dessert for my husband's birthday but never brought anything out. Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt that it was a busy night and might give them another chance with their regular menu entrees but I don't have high hopes.

We had kids with us, so we got there an hour before it became 21+. Everyone was friendly, the food came pretty quick relative to how hopping it was. We ordered: Pho-rench dip (w/fries)--I think this was a DDD sandwich, so it's not some hidden gem, but it was super tasty. You cannot go wrong. The slight lime-iness of the dipping broth really kicked it into turbo. Also, we all likes the steak fries--a note on that later. Chicken Cheese Steak (w/fries)--my wife loved it. I tried a bite, and it was great--a little mushroom-forward, but we like that. Mac and Cheese--do not be fooled by the slightly smaller bowl, it is very filling. My son can eat his birth weight in pasta, and he had to tap out! I tried a bite--it was creamy (not grainy at all), and was just the right amount of salty and cheese-funky. Grilled cheese and tomato soup (w/fries)--perhaps the least successful for my family, but only because my daughter prefers a smoky/spicy tomato soup, and this was more on the sweet side. The griled cheese was of the "crispy cheese on the outside" ilk, which my daughter thought was really good. So, totally would go again. IMPORTANT NOTE (to people traveling through Chico, or who don't want to take leftovers)--the sandwiches are pretty big, and the add-on fry order is also sizeable. If we were going again tomorrow, we would either order 1 fry instead of 3. Or split a sandwich. Very very good pub.

Not sure if it was on "off" day for the chef but the Shepherds pie had zero flavor as if no spices or salt was used. The celery and carrots were undercooked and crunchy. There was hardly any meat and veg compared to the amount of potatoes on top. Potatoes also had no flavor of salt or butter. So bland and blech! Aside from the taste of the terrible food, the prices were way too high for the amount of food..$26 for a very small shepherds pie. There is no wait staff. You place your order at the counter. Once we ordered and paid for two shepherds pies (with the tip upfront) we found a table and sat down. The cashier then came to tell us there was only one shepherds pie left (on a Saturday at 5:30 in the evening?) and we could order something else and since we had already paid, he would give us another drink or something to offset the difference. We then ordered The Rancher. This also had hardly any filling with a puff pastry on top. Again, way overpriced at $24. We didn't get another drink to make up for the price difference. On top of all this, the Saturday evening "entertainment" was a group of senior citizens singing songs from the 50's and 60's very LOUDLY. It was a strange choice for a weekend night at a bar. No offense to the singers but wow, it was awkward as you feel as if you have to give a bit of applause since they are literally right next to the table. We left after eating a small amount and went to find dinner somewhere else.
