We have eaten here multiple times. Last night we went for happy hour and then had reservations after graduation. We were running late but we were still accommodated. The hotel is very nice. Beautiful room. The restaurant appears to relaxing and comfortable. My Alfredo with shrimp was below par. Pasta was gummy and over cooked. The shrimp was rubbery and it too was over cooked. The favor was tasty but the presentation was not appealing. Would not recommend this dish. My wife's Ahi taco was presented nicely and she enjoyed her dinner. Service was friendly but really slow for nit many people at the grill. The BEST breakfast burrito everrrrr!!!!! We've been so happy with all our food choices here! This time I did the Chico State burrito with black beans on the side. Comes with deliciously made carnitas and a side of potatoes. My partner got the 2.2.2 two eggs, choice of bacon or sausage and French toast. Visited September 26th. As everyone knows I always provide a receipt for all places! This place is inside the Hotel Diamond in Chico. Some reviews said they were open at 1130am..wrong! They open at 3pm in the bar and 4pm for dinner ( see picture of hours). They are located right next to the Rawbar( awesome suishi place). Some of my pictures are of the front lobby and entry of the hotel. I did include the lobby so guests know they have an elevator and not just stairs! The hotel itself was built in the 1904 according to the nice front desk man. The restaurant and bar is to the left of the lobby but can be accessed through the lobby or it's designated door. Lobby is nostalgic and reminiscent of the 1930s vibe. There is an elevator to get to all floors!( or the stairs for cardio!). It had a cool menu and drink list but will have to try again when I am in the area since they don't open until 3pm! read more

Had higher hopes for dinner at the Grill. Beautiful atmosphere and hotel , nice looking menu but overall a disappointing meal. I had the ahi tacos ---tasty but clunky to eat. The ahi was rectangular ---and not nearly as pink as I'm used to so flavor was not there --- and thick and impossible to eat as a taco---sounds crazy but it would have been better if a little smaller and thinly sliced with more slaw so the tortilla could wrap around . So it was good just not great. My BF had the pasta with prawns ---3 huge prawns but they were overcooked like the pasta which was really gummy. The server checked in quickly to see how things were , and I gave her a weak "good" but my partner had a mouthful and she took off so he wasn't able to let her know that things were not to his liking. Service was attentive with water but again, just not great meal. I also thought it strange that 20% service charge was included in the check because I put it in our room , so keep rhetorical in mind . We had drinks in the bar before dinner and then dinner here last night and it was excellent. Our Servers were sweet and professional. The food was outstanding. There were 4 of us. We all ordered different things and were impressed with all 4 dishes. It's mostly seafood, which we loved, they had some meat dishes for those who aren't big fish fans. We look forward to going back and eating at a restaurant in town that's really great looking and has excellent food with friendly staff and no, I don't no anyone who works ther. My partner & I had a date night at The Grill this past weekend and it felt like a really special place... I just can't figure out why it was completely empty. We made a 6:30pm reservation for Saturday night, and while there were a few people in the bar/lounge area, we were the only patrons in the restaurant for the entire hour & a half we were there. It was Thanksgiving weekend, so there's that... but it was just really odd. Overall, the food was phenomenal. My partner ordered the ribeye and he was really pleased with the cut of beef, the way it was cooked, etc. I ordered the prime rib French Dip sandwich and it dethroned my long-standing favorite from Los Altos Grill (Los Altos) and Rutherford Grill (Napa) of the Hillstone Restaurant Group. I mean, it was really freaking good! I think the reason for only 4 stars is the service lacked a bit throughout. The staff outnumbered us 4:1 easily... so it was strange that our water glasses ever got empty, or we had to ask for to-go boxes or our check. Our server brought me a box, but no containers for the au jus or horseradish cream. The Grill feels like fine dining, and I was expecting a higher level of service... if for nothing else, because we were the only people in the restaurant. Missed the mark - seems like they only prepared orders for one table at a time. Waited an unreasonable amount of time for our food to come out...close to an hour after ordering. $108 for two steaks that were not properly cooked. A seafood dish that was uncooked in the center, justified by the manager that its sushi grade and ok to eat raw. Bizarre response. Other seafood dish swam in an odd-tasting sauce. We ate here for brunch the first time on our latest trip to Chico and had a mixed experience, although one which shows promise and it seems possible that the defects we encountered were due to a bad day. The place is nice and attractive inside, on the ground floor of the lovely Hotel Diamond in the heart of downtown. There is a nice bar area and a separate dining area. So far, we only had brunch this one time. One of us got the french toast, which had nice flavour and good bread with a nice chewy crust but softer interior. However, it was a little undercooked. 3.5 stars. Had it been prepared just a little better, probably 4 stars easily. The rest of us got the prime rib eggs benedict, again a dish which was fundamentally good but a bit sloppy in the execution. The Hollandaise sauce was good, the eggs nicely cooked, and the prime rib nicely shredded and cooked well, with some slight touches of crispy edges but otherwise nice and pink and not overcooked. The potatoes which accompanied were also good with nice flavour and crispy but not overcooked for two of us. However, the English muffins seemed like they were not toasted at all, being soft, blond, and chewy. Also, one of us had potatoes which were badly overcooked and hard, while for all three of us the dish came out barely lukewarm, as if it had been sitting, and the surface of the Hollandaise was dryish and dull, also indicating that it had been sitting. 3.5 stars, but could easily have been 4.5 had they been prepared properly and came out hot. Related to this, it took a very , very long time for our food to get there after we ordered it and then only two of us were served at first. The other two dishes came out long after,by which time the first two of us were halfway through our meal. We noticed several other tables suffering the same problem, or worse. One table of 4 which we saw had only one person served for some time and by the time the rest got their food, she was already finished with hers. From where we sat, we noticed that there appeared to be confusion or discussion among the servers and cooks at the kitchen area, which seemed related. Coffee was good and strong but came out unreliably also. Service was friendly. We would be willing to go back and there is definitely promise in the food quality, while at this time we feel that it is very possible that this was simply a bad day. However, as things stand, we could not give it more than 3 stars and if this proves to be normal after future visits, we probably would not go back due to the issues noted. read more

Since our last visit 5 months ago they've rearranged a few tables/seats and all we four of us liked the changes. We had a 1:30 reservation for Mother's Day brunch. The buffet table was almost bare. There was very little left. Very disappointed. I felt embarrassed for my daughter, who made the reservation and drove from Berkeley to take me to a special brunch and to have it be worse than a dorm cafeteria. We ate at The Grill last week, and it was just wonderful, once again. The ambiance is so classy and chill. Even with the restaurant practically full, you can actually carry on a conversation in a normal tone of voice and are not privy to every word of another party three tables away. It is THE place to go for a relaxing, special, classy experience. Being on the first floor of the Hotel Diamond, the decor is lovely. I ordered Oysters Rockefeller; I'd never had them before and they were absolutely scrumptious! Our entrees of the salmon and the risotto were elegant and delicious. The service was totally on-point. Came here for trivia and had a great time. The trivia is in the downstairs room and starts at 6:30 on Wednesdays. We got 4 appetizers. The artichoke dip was our favorite, it came with awesome tortilla chips and they even gave us more when we ran out. The brussels sprouts were different they were more shaved rather than cut and it was a pretty small portion for the price, felt like more of a salad than an appetizer. The burrata & tomatoes had great flavor but needed more tomatoes. The meatballs were the least expensive but had the most food. They were good, but nothing special. I will def be back for their happy hour it seems like a great deal. When we come back for dinner it will be for more of a date night with the prices. Second time we tried the Grill. First time the were out of Ribeye's and Merlion Steaks, so I had a New York Steak. weird for a steak house to run out of meat at 7pm on a Saturday night. Last night we tried it again. Reservation at 6:30pm. We were the third table seated. We ordered drinks then Dinner. Drinks came out fine when we could find out waitress, but one time we had to find her out side smoking. Ordered dinner. It took almost and hour and half to get our food. We used the Grill for our Rehearsal dinner and rented their downstairs area. We had an amazing time! The staff was so nice and helpful. I communicated with Kate the Director of Events and she was the best! So helpful, I could not recommend them more. The event space was private and calm, it was the set up so that we had a very intimate gathering. The food was delicious, we had great reviews from our guests and so many left overs! Took my kid here after dorm move in for evening dinner. Neither of us was super hungry so we decided to split a main meal and get a few appetizers. It was later around 8:45 pm so not super busy. Waitress was super nice and attentive. I forgot her name but she is a senior at Chico and really had a good chat with my daughter on the school and community. We got the meatballs as appetizer. Daughter's word are "Those were the best" and then we share the Steak Frittes which is steak and fries. Also very good. Not much else to say. Great food and service. Would return. read more

Had a troubling experience at The Grill. My wife and I ate at The Grill on Saturday 7/15. We planned to go to one of the usual restaurants on our rotation but when we got downtown we decided to try The Grill as it had recently opened. We arrived at 4:45, the dining area was completely empty, no one was dining. The staff asked if we had a reservation which we didn't. One of the staff who looked to be a lead person met with the server and decided where to seat us and we were escorted to the table. As we were walking through the empty restaurant the server made some ridiculous comment that they wanted to make sure seats were available for folks that had reservations. We were seated in the back corner of the restaurant, behind a floor to ceiling pillar, next to the restrooms. It seemed strangely punitive to seat us there. I'll repeat, the restaurant was completely empty. We finished at @ 5:45 and there were only two other parties dining in the restaurant at that time. So much for the deluge of customers they referenced before seating us. We were wondering why they went out of their way to seat us so poorly. Possibly the way we looked or dressed. Hmmm, pretty lame. We had been to the previous restaurant at the Diamond Hotel, the Diamond Steakhouse many times and never had a problem whether we had reservations or not. Businesses operate to provide a product or service and make a profit. Successful businesses factor in customer service and prioritize that. We'll have to stick to our usual rotation, Red Tavern, 5th Street, Crush, Sicilian Cafe, Parkside, Grana... many other choices. read more

This bar and restaurant has never been able to sustain any success. Pre pandemic I tried but the food wasn't great. Post pandemic I gave it another try and as per my past Experience the bartender ignored us and was only interested in talking and goofing off rather than helping or greeting anyone. Drinks were way overpriced and not good and wanted to try food but he never came back to help so we paid our bill and left to go to a bar/restaurant that does want to serve and has quality food and drink. Don't waste your money. While the hotel is great...that's it. Too bad this place can't get it together. They have a great location and the room to do it but never have. read more

So I went there with my husband for breakfast. We ordered chicken and waffles. I tried so hard to eat the chicken cuz the server was a nice kid. But also he had to have noticed how burnt my chicken was .So I sent it back ( I just couldn't eat it) the new chicken was burnt as well! My husband also got chicken and waffles with burnt chicken. So so dissapointed. I thought it would be better because new management , but alas they were not. I was also very suprised to have to pay for my meal anyway. Won't be going back. I didn't want to share this until we tried The Grill at least twice. We were there during their soft opening in late June. During that trip I had the ribeye which was AWESOME - the best I've had in Chico, reasonably priced, and came with sides. My wife had the risotto which was also delicious. Our latest visit included my in-laws. We started with some great cocktails (I had the Botanist G&T which was solid even if a bit feminine looking.. haha.. loved the smell of the sage actually) and 2 fantastic starters. The burrata comes with a really good super-fresh pesto, and the dumplings are served in a ridiculous mushroom gravy that would actually be amazing over mashed potatoes! For a main dish I had the Salmon which was perfectly cooked and served over mashed potatoes and forbidden rice with brussels sprouts. I'll definitely have it again. My wife and mother-in-law both had mahi-mahi tacos. They were delicious, and as a bonus I got to have the leftover one for lunch the next day. My father-in-law had the burger and said it might be the best burger he's ever had. The owner Jeff stopped by a couple of times to see how we were doing, and probably talked to everyone in the restaurant. Service was really good especially considering it was only their 2nd night officially open. So ya, assuming they keep up the good work, this is our new favorite restaurant in Chico! read more

Menu needs some tweaking and way too salty! So, first things first: I grew up in the restaurant business and my father had two rester's. I believe the chef here is using Fluer de see--an expensive salt--and s/he is kind of using it like regular salt--even though it's about 4-5 times saltier. So, my steak and my husband's salmon and our friends' food, too, was over salted by A LOT. Best advice: DON'T salt with Fluer de sea, or any other salt. Let the patrons do it. Use herbs yes, or an herb blend, but The Grill has wonderful meat, and we want to be able to taste it. Also--and this is bigger--on repeat visits this place is. underpopulated on weekends in the dining room. The bar is full, though. What that tells us is that the overly casual menu isn't working in a high-end looking dining room. Here's a few suggest's: Get rid of the tacos on the entrees, and serve snapper as a meal. Add a half Cornish game hen for, say, $28 or so, lose the "sandwiches" but keep one high-end burger, see the risotto and offer an option with gourmet sausage. Add small (real) candles and little pots of real flowers, and change the music to jazz. WE love rock n roll, but blaring The Beatles doesn't work in a dining room. We'd say get white table clothes, too, but the tables are so beautiful that candlelight might add the extra ambience needed. The food here is delicious--it just needs to be dining room fare, not casual cafe fare. I hope that helps you bring more people in because it's lovely and deserves to be filled! read more

Had a nice experience, minus the one waitress. The food was excellent. Tasty and cooked well with a nice presentation. Been thinking about the steak salad I had ever since my visit. My girlfriend got the pasta pompaddoro bolenaise. It looked and tasted delicious when I tried it. Loved the ambience. Loved watching the cooks make our meals. Everyone was very nice and professional. Our particular waitress didn't keep our drinks filled, but other than that, a nice experience. Highly recommend for tasty food and nice ambience. On our visit the staff seemed a little overwhelmed, but I'll chalk that up to a busy dinner service snd only 3 to 4 waitresses. My wife and I went to The Grill for a major anniversary, and mentioned that fact when making our reservation. It would have been nice for the restaurant to acknowledge that in some way, if even just a smile and "Happy Anniversary". The Grill's ambience is nice, food is good, and prices are reasonable. Our server was very pleasant and she made an effort to note exactly what we asked for when we ordered. The kitchen, however, ignored what she wrote; the order was not modified as requested whatsoever. The food arrived exactly as it is described on the menu, and not at all as specified. We mentioned that to our server and she apologized, but there was no effort on the part of management to make up for the fact that what we got wasn't what we ordered. We will probably try The Grill again some day, but I do wish that this special occasion had gone perfectly. read more
