We decided to try this place based on the many wonderful reviews regarding the food and ambience. The outside patio looked very appealing with a huge shade tree and if it weren't chilly outside, it looked like a nice place for a meal and a beer. Not sure if it was on "off" day for the chef but the Shepherds pie had zero flavor as if no spices or salt was used. The celery and carrots were undercooked and crunchy. There was hardly any meat and veg compared to the amount of potatoes on top. Potatoes also had no flavor of salt or butter. So bland and blech! Aside from the taste of the terrible food, the prices were way too high for the amount of food..$26 for a very small shepherds pie. There is no wait staff. You place your order at the counter. Once we ordered and paid for two shepherds pies (with the tip upfront) we found a table and sat down. The cashier then came to tell us there was only one shepherds pie left (on a Saturday at 5:30 in the evening?) and we could order something else and since we had already paid, he would give us another drink or something to offset the difference. We then ordered The Rancher. This also had hardly any filling with a puff pastry on top. Again, way overpriced at $24. We didn't get another drink to make up for the price difference. On top of all this, the Saturday evening "entertainment" was a group of senior citizens singing songs from the 50's and 60's very LOUDLY. It was a strange choice for a weekend night at a bar. No offense to the singers but wow, it was awkward as you feel as if you have to give a bit of applause since they are literally right next to the table. We left after eating a small amount and went to find dinner somewhere else. read more

We enjoyed our food: Scotch Egg(egg wrapped in sausage), The Rancher Pastry Topped Pies(steak, mushroom, carrot with ale gravy), The Cock Pastie(chicken curry), Oliver Twist(pretzel with beer cheese), Sweet Caroline(pretzel with cream cheese frosting dip)- all very tasty. Loved our drinks: Shenandoah Sauvignon Blanc, house made Pinot Gris Sangria, house made Red Blend Sangria, Hand Pulled Beer - FREEDOM! Scotch Ale, Fun British artifacts were placed on the walls and in seating area. The seating was lovely inside with comfy chairs, and outside seating is available. This is a lovely British-style pub in downtown Chico, and as far as we know the only place in the region serving hand-pumped cask ale. The place itself is lovely and very nice. It has nice, comfortable decor with some comfortable seating as well as more traditional dining tables. There is also a nice patio area outside under shady trees, very nice in warm weather. The location is great, downtown but in a quieter street just off the main business core. British cask ale is our favorite kind and it's nice to find a place area which makes and serves it, something which is very rare. The beers themselves are somewhat uneven in quality, but some are very good. We found the Freedom Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy cask to be the best of theirs and it is very good. London Calling is a pretty good lighter English pale ale. The food we have had is excellent. The Bangers and Mash plate with gravy and peas is excellent (5) stars and the Scotch Egg is also very good (4.5). They have a nice salad with great dressing (4.5). They get a bit higher score for having four cask pumps and ale. Service is good, very friendly and well-run. read more

I was so excited when a friend told me about Allie's Pub. I love pubs and we don't have many places like this in Chico. The outdoor patio is beautiful and charming. Unfortunately the inside was a bit disappointing. It does have some British decor but overall looks like a hodgepodge of artwork and cluttered pieces that were thrown together. Doesn't have a dark, cozy atmosphere one would expect from an authentic pub. I ordered the shepherds pie which I was eager to try. The waitress came over and said their "meat was not good, it was frozen" and would I like to order something else. I just ordered their garlic cheese bread instead, which was just okay. Mind you the shepherds pie I'd already paid for was over $25, and the garlic cheese bread was $11. I had to hunt down the waitress to ask for a refund of the difference. Other than one woman at the bar, the wait staff was unfriendly and harried. The bar area where they serve drinks looked cluttered and disorganized. I was so thrilled to have a British pub in Chico, but unfortunately we won't be going back. read more

We had the hog & the bull pasties. I've never had a pasties before and was pleasantly surprised to taste the crispy & flaky crust with the pulled pork and steak cooked so well that it didn't make the crust soggy. Very tasty and I'm happy to say I will be coming back to ordering more! read more

Stumbled upon this place when I was in Chico briefly charging my car. Really great traditional English pub food. Had the bangers and mash, and it was spot on. The only two criticisms I would have for the restaurant is to make the lighting more cozy inside. Way too bright for a pub. Also, in terms of beer, I'm not sure if they make it themselves or not, but there are a lot of great craft breweries that they could source from to improve the selection. Both IPAs were not great. Didn't try the hand pump. But love the effort. read more

Very cool find in downtown Chico! Modeled after a traditional British pub, the building itself is beautiful. The Allies Pub also brews their own beers too offsite! Pretty impressive. I got a tasting flight for $11.75 since I love being able to sample the different types of beers! I tend to like lighter beers and really enjoyed the Barrage Ballroom which is a honey blonde ale. The menu is very British serving up everything from Scotch eggs to various pasties and pies. We had just eaten so we didn't get to try any of the food however. What drew me in was the impressive patio space with heat lamps. While it was winter, the heat lamps took the edge off and with the lights in the background it felt very festive indeed! What a neat place! We have heard good things about Allies Pub for a while now, but didn't have a chance to try it until recently (ya know... 2020 things). We came on a Friday night for dinner and drinks and we were so pleasantly surprised with how much we enjoyed everything! We were open to trying new things when we decided to finally visit, which I think is necessary if you've never had British food or are at all picky. We tried "the cock" pasty and "the fisherman" pie. They were both SO good! The chicken in the pasty was so tender, and curry was the perfect addition. I was a little skeptical of the pie with shrimp, salmon, and white fish, but it surpassed my expositions by FAR! My hubby had a blonde ale which was really good and I had a cab sav which grew on me. We are so happy we branched out and tried this place! All the employees were really nice, did their specific jobs well, and we loved the beautiful patio. This a wonderful British-style pub. Great British food. I had the Rancher, a steak and mushroom pie with pastry crust. The ambience is conducive to a nice meal-- quiet and well-lit, not noisy and dark. Four of their beers are cask-conditioned ale, what the British call "real ale." That means the yeast is still fermenting and there's no added CO2 to kill it. This is a real treat (hard to find), but if that's not your thing, you can choose from many other beers and other beverages. Order at the bar. Staff is friendly and service is great. read more

I lived in England for two years when I was 12, and we went to so many pubs during that time because anyone who came to visit us wanted to get the real English experience. So trust me when I say this place is ON POINT when it comes to the whole British aesthetic and the food is exactly what you could get in a little hole in the wall pub in London. Northern California is not at ALL where I ever would have expected to find this experience again, but it totally took me back to being across the pond in the best possible way! My husband and I both got meat pies and I don't know how they could possibly have been more delicious or hearty. Really good food by any standard. Only thing to note is that you might find it hard to seat a large group as many of the tables are small (it's cozy!) and the kitchen closes at 8 so make sure you get there early enough. This was the third time I've visited - first time to eat - We chose it for my son's 26th bday with his friend, girl friend & my BF. There wasn't a table for five so we pulled together pub tables & stools. They were fine but everytime I come I feel like they are tilting me out of my seat. We made it work. That's the only downfall. The boys had the "Rancher" basically a hearty beaf pot-pie-they loved it. My BF had the "Bull" - basically a beef stew empanada that came with a side salad. The crust came out on the very well done side. He enjoyed it as well. J had the "Cock" a chicken empanada-ish meal with a side salad. She liked it a lot. I had the "Fisherman" that was like a fish chowder with mash potatoes melted on top & served like a pot pie. It was super hot & yummy but I want to try the bangers or one of the "pies" next time. The boys had Queen Bea light ale & us ladies shared a bottle of Terra D'Oro Pinot Grigio ($22 for the bottle vs $9 a glass). The staff are super nice & attentive! You order your drinks & then order your food at another window. They take your credit card & give you a "key" so you only have to give them your number to put it on your "tab." Over all for the five of us the final bill was good & I left a 20% tip. Can't wait for warmer spring weather to sit on their beautiful patio. If you read this far THREE more reasons to try it out- #1 go there for something different from the regular downtown fair & free parking. #2 kids are welcome - I often see millennials with a stroller meeting up. #3 Electric fireplace with a game table with wing-back chairs (and a nook area too with a table) & different games available - I plan to play some cribbage next time I'm there. read more

The English style beer is fantastic. Had the ESB which was spot-on with the traditional pump. The food is overpriced and not on par with what you would expect in this type of restaurant. The $24 Sheppard pie with ground beef, carrots, peas, mash potatoes, gravy was underwhelming with flavor. The center of the Shepards pie was cold. The "Betty's board" was okay with exception to the canned pears sliced on the charcuterie. Again, well worth the beer. read more

April 2021 (covid times): No order taking at your table. You must wait inside inline (during our time there we saw 3 people without masks allowed to order inside). The Dougie ... their version of a British India Pale Ale was excellent. $7.50 for 16 ounces for Chico? Quite pricey but it certainly was a nice IPA. All their other beers also cost $7.50 for 16 ounces. The Betty's Board Platter was very nice and I recommend it. $15.50 The Bull pastie was mostly pastry, not that good. The small side salad with it was nice. $15.75 The Sheperd Pie was good, especially if you like a lot of mashed potatoes. $16.75 Order at the counter inside, sit down and have your order delivered to you. I took my partner, my brother and his friend to this place for dinner, which is a British inspired pub in downtown Chico. The food was delicious and reminded me of being in the United Kingdom. I ordered their bangers and mash, and my partner ordered a traditional meat pie, and they were both delicious. He also ordered two flights of beer and since they were out of multiple beers, he ended up trying everything they had available. He enjoyed them, as much as he can for European style brews which he is not a big fan of to begin with. I ordered this delicious beverage, called "Royal Tea," which is this black tea infused with apricot and some kind of malt alcohol it was totally unique, refreshing, and delicious.
