There were only a few parties when we were there but I could imagine if the place was hopping, acoustics would be iffy. Sit at the bar to watch all the action behind the scenes. Never ever had a problem or had anyone tell us about this 1:30 pm seating rule. Ok. But I show her my phone. "it's 1:30 now" and she just shrugs and says sorry. Disappointed, we cruise over to The Farmers Skillet located a few miles away in Chico on Rio Lindo. We strolled in at 1:50 pm, noting they also close at 2 pm. I ask politely if we are too late even though our hostess already has two menus in her hand and a smile on her face. "Not at all," she exclaims and then says "Welcome". Service there was warm, and unhurried. The Roost could learn a lesson here. If your 24/7 policy is to stop serving half an hour prior to closing then it should be posted, and door locked maybe? I know Deja Vu (also in Chico, on the Esplanade) closes at 2 pm and they have the CLOSED sign up with door locked at 1:45 pm. We shan't be returning. Very disrespectful and unnecessary. IF in fact that IS the policy of this diner and not just the whim of a lazy student/hostess then we should still have been seated. It was 1:30 pm as we entered. Shame on management. Know your staff and make sure they are operating with YOUR agenda and priorities, not theirs.

Food was also very good but didn't stand out quite as much. We came in on a Tuesday night in large part because Crush was closed which was our first choice for the third dinner in Chico. We had already eaten as 5th St Steakhouse and the Sierra Nevada Taproom on earlier nights and I would only pick Sierra Nevada over this place because it's such an institution if you've never been there before. Otherwise this is my current top pic in Chico. Our server was really great. Checked in often and accommodating to ask about minor modifications to cocktails (mostly light syrup requests). When I see a restaurant cocktail menu I usually see 1-2 things that sound good but they have a great cocktail list where half sounded great. Started off with a Passionfruit Porto Sour and they accommodated a request for 1/2 simple syrup on it. It was good. My dinner mate got a Pomegranate Ginger Martini which was good enough to order a second later. We also were able to squeeze in a couple of happy hour apps. The Roman artichokes and shrimp gambas were good and easy to share. They also start you off with a little biscuit amuse bouche with compound butter but it was a miss. Very dense and not super flavorful or right out of the oven. The compound butter wasn't good enough to salvage it either. That bite was probably the worse of the night which is a positive. I got eh ribeye with salsa verde, broccolini and fingering potatoes which was good. They were a little heavy handed for my taste with the salsa verde but was ok because it was thick enough to scape partially off and it wasn't too salty and tasty. Just too much covering the steak. The steak itself was ok and already cut into strips but not a standout. The steak at 5th Street was better cut and cooked piece of meat. The broccolini was fine as well but the best thing on the plate was the fingerling potatoes and I'm not a potatoes person. They were partially smashed and cooked well enough to have some crispy outside. Dinner mate had the grilled petite tender which was a filet with a nice fruit glaze and they liked it but I didn't try. I ordered a second cocktail in the form of a coffee Negroni which I had never had before and was eager to try but was told they ran out because they pre-batch it. I got an east side instead off menu and it was solid. We followed up with a chocolate martini and a penicillin (1/2 honey) which was a nice end. Friendly attentive service, great drinks and solid food. We ate on a nice outdoor patio which was nice in the warm weather but there were a lot of flies and the table tops have ridges which made the cocktails on there dicey. Overall strongly recommend!

If anything it tasted a bit top heavy with vinegar, yet still enjoyable. I washed it down with a Schramsberg Prosecco which was a perfect accompaniment. For an entree I choose the Grilled 6oz Petit Tender (medium rare) with asparagus and scalloped potatoes topped by a red wine and berry sauce. It was excellent, flavorful with the meat very tender. I was very pleased. It was an abundant portion so I was quite full after consuming it. My dining companion had the grilled meatloaf with ground filet mignon and pork sausage. It is baked and then grilled. I tried some and it is EPIC. It has to be one of the best meatloaf preparation I ever tasted. Bravo on this dish! We shared a bottle of Tempranillo to accompany it which was perfect. For dessert we shared a nice and refreshing mint chocolate chip ice cream which was generously comped as we were there for a special occasion. Thank you!
