Great food and excellent service. The prices are much more affordable than any restaurant in Chico. Try the cranberry chicken salad because it's delicious! Burgers are great too. Steaks too. On Tuesday (I think) they have 2-for-1 broasted chicken dinners which include soup, salad, bread and drink! You cannot beat that deal anywhere. It's a favorite place for students from DHS everyday starting around 12:45 and it gets very crowded for about a half hour until the kids have ordered and are seated in the big back room. But the folks at The Rooster have got this lunch rush (students) totally under control and it really doesn't impact the wait time or service at all. Not a good Phili Cheesesteak. Tasted like Rayburn's frozen steak sandwich with grilled onions and bell peppers. Coleslaw was ok. This place is amazing! I went for the 19.99 Friday night prime rib dinner. What a deal. You get your choice of two home cooked soups. I chose the clam chowder. Can't remember what the other choice was once I heard clam chowder I was all in. The soup was thick and creamy, flavored perfectly. The garden salad was fresh and crisp. My prime rib arrived with a fully loaded baked potato and garlic toast. The prime rib served as I ordered, med rare, to perfection and flavorful, seasoned with encrusted rosemary. Baked potato also perfectly done with butter, sour cream, cheese, and chives on the side. The garlic toast had the savory scent of garlic and butter toasted to a golden brown. Was a great dipper for my last spoonful of clam chowder. The service was excellent from the time you open the door arriving and leaving. Friendly , happy staff all around. Celine was our waitress making us feel at home and made sure we had everything we wanted. Durham is really lucky to have such a great cozy feel , rustic, friendly, welcoming restaurant on the Midway that serves such great food, with great value. Really enjoyed the evening. We stopped after watching grandsons football game. They have a great menu for a nice sit down meal or a quick fast food meal. Food was delicious, service was fast. Now open on Sunday which is fantastic since I work M-F mornings and my GF works Saturday mornings. But now we have a breakfast option in Durham on Sundays which is nice. Been eating here for years. But after the business changed ownership it's going downhill. The biggest issue is their sanitation. The place is infested with flies inside in the seating area and outside. I brought this up with waitstaff the last three visits and they just don't care. It's horrible They need to do a complete Kitchen and Food storage area clean, look behind and inside the food preparation storage and prep counters. Clean up your act. Flies are bad and carry germs. Get a screen door installed in the kitchen back door would also be a good start. read more

I live in Durham, and would love to give the Red Rooster a glowing review. Their service, decor, and atmosphere is nice, but simply put the food is mediocre at best. Little things like getting that golden crust on hash browns, appropriate heat for fried foods ( so they are crisp but not soggy with grease) seem beyond their capabilities. read more

First visit was great, second visit was awful. Depends on which waitress you get, I guess. First time we had this very kind waitress named either Shaundra or Saundra. She was very nice and we chatted with her for a bit. Second time we had a super rude waitress.. I never got her name, but she had short black hair. From the moment we walked in we could tell she didn't want us in there. She was rude and short with her answers. As we had breakfast, I came to notice that there was Gospel/Christian music playing on the radio. Being a non-Christian myself, I asked her politely if she could change the radio station to anything else. She stared at me as if she had no idea what I could mean (how can you not like the Jesus music?!). So I clarified, "Literally anything other than religious music would be great." She walked away, and instead of changing the music, she just shut it off, as if she couldn't stand to listen to anything else. This place isn't really bad, and it's just about your only breakfast choice in Durham. (But Chico is only a few miles north.) This rating is based on our one experience here for breakfast on a weekday in July. Here's the breakdown from our experience: really awful, flavorless coffee (Farmer Brothers?): -2 (The latte' was pretty bad, too.) waffles were soft--more like a 3-d pancake--not crunchy at all: -1 cinnamon rolls: looked pretty old/stale, and the waitress very kindly recommended that we NOT order them on this visit; -1 for the bad rolls and +1 for the warning from the waitress (I saw nutrition stickers on the back of the pastry case, which led me to believe that these are not made on-site.) hash brown potatoes: so-so, crispy outside, but mostly just hot, cooked potato-y stuff: +/-0 very friendly, fast, efficient service: +1 eggs; very good, cooked exactly as requested, served hot: +1 breakfast for 2 adults + 1 small child (included two espresso drinks, but no juice): $30.05 without tip We will probably go back here for breakfast, but we'd skip the coffee-like drinks and waffle; this would bring it up to a solid 3-star rating. read more
