Generous portions. Value priced. They have quite a few good selections on the menu. Everything is value-priced, but they cut a lot of corners to keep it that way. I had the Half-sandwich with soup and fries. I chose grilled Ham n cheese and the "half" I was presented with was larger than most full sandwiches. Quite tasty as well. A generous portion of fries came with it and the soup was vegetable beef. The fries were cooked to perfection and delicious. Too bad the super-cheap ketchup they serve is not edible. It's like they made it from canned tomato sauce. Disgusting! The soup wasn't the best. It tasted like they keep a single pot and add stuff to it every day. Re-heating and adding more to it every morning. I had to chase the server down and ask for it because she had forgotten to bring it out. Not good. I also had a strawberry milkshake. It tasted like vanilla ice milk and had some strawberry syrup drizzled on it for flavoring. When I stirred it in, the drink became slightly pink and had the slightest hint of strawberry. Not very thick either, but it was thick enough to collapse the super-cheap straws they use. I had to ask for water for my dog four times and when they brought some, it was in a plastic bucket that had been used as an ash tray. There were burn marks and ashes still in it and it reeked of cigarettes. The place has it's good points. Just don't expect much. read more

My wife and I visited the hilltop Café in Magalia California again today, mostly because of our previous experience, which was very good. Today's visit was not so good. The food was OK but not great. The server was very nice and did a good job, but it was when we were leaving the restaurant or things really went downhill.As I was assisting my wife, who is in a wheelchair toward our car, two large aggressive dogs in a Subaru began to growl, bark, and the dog in the backseat acted as if it was going to jump out of the car and charge us. I grab my wife's wheelchair and begin to slow slowly walk back toward the restaurant getting her away from these two snarling animals. A very nice lady who we did not previously know offered to stay with my wife Jane until I can go get the car and bring it around safely away from the two starling animals. After making sure my wife was safely in our car and thanking the nice couple for staying with her, I went back into the restaurant to let the restaurant know that this was not acceptable. The owner of the dogs decided to confront me about it in the restaurant and I told him that his two dogs were very aggressive and had no place in a public restaurant. He proceeded to tell me that his dogs would not have jumped out of the car which I did not believe. He was a very rude person, and if we were in a different situation, I might have continued to confront him about his dogs, but I did not. I I believe it's the restaurant responsibility to look out for their customers while on their property and they did not do a very good job with that. We may not go back to the hilltop Café, which is unfortunate but I wanted to write this review and let people know that I believe they were negligent. I'm glad I was there to look out for my wife. Honestly, if we were not in such a public place, I might've beaten that guy's ass and made him apologize to my wife for scaring the hell out of her. read more

I really like this restaurant and had been looking forward to having the rip-eye for dinner. I had the rip-eye 2 weeks ago and thought it was really good. I went back and ordered it again. When it came out, I can tell that it didn't look like a rip-eye but I thought I would cut it first to try. I have had many rip-eyes before so I can tell just by looking. Well, it wasn't rip-eye. I asked the waitress and she assured me that it was indeed a rip-eye. She said that it was cut differently and that another customer had asked her the same question too. Well, am I dumb or what! It didn't look nor taste like a rip-eye. It was such a disappointment because I didn't enjoyed my dinner the way that I was anticipating. Really great service here. The restaurant was busy and they were currently cleaning many portions of the walls and baseboards (not near seated patrons). They were definitely following all covid precautions and on their A-game with drink refills! The food was a bit greasy, but we did order fries and onion rings so that's probably more on us. Ha! Lots of other tables were getting burgers so I assume they're really good here. However, my husband and I both got a sandwich. I ordered a turkey and he ordered the philly. Not my favorite meal, but I'll be back and next time I'll try a burger. read more

The service was awesome and the food was great. Magalia is just outside of Paradise where the wildfire destroyed most of the town a few years ago. Our servers, Chloe and Morgan were very friendly. So I ordered the special, which was ham and cheese omelette, with Fruit bowl and rye toast. Omelette was tasty, especially after adding a little picante hot sauce. Fruit bowl was bland and not sweet, but that's typical everywhere now since it's very hard to find sweet, ripe fruit these days. Rye toast was very good and perfectly buttered, with good butter. Two years ago this place was great. Had a couple great waitresses on the night shift. Others were very questionable on day shift with smells of alcohol coming off of them. Food was good then. But since it has gone seriously down hill! Staff seems rude, mostly the older women who still reek of alcohol. Food had majorly declined! Only thing they still cook semi well is the fried chicken. So disappointed since I use to love going here. I keep trying to give them another chance but every time I'm so disappointed. They need to get ride of the rude older waitresses and get better cooks! read more

My grandparents live in Magalia and we were visiting them for the 4th of July holiday. We came here to breakfast several times during our trip and enjoyed each trip. Their biscuits & gravy (picture added to the picture section), is very generous and delicious. Big, obviously homemade biscuits and plenty of gravy! They also serve grits which can be ordered with butter and cheese so that they are savory and were excellent. They also have a menu where you can mix and match breakfast items for an extremely reasonable price. I also wanted to specifically comment on the waitstaff, all three waitresses we had were so incredibly friendly! You could also overhear them have personal exchanges with other customers in the restaurant, so you can tell they are they kind of waitresses that get to know their local customers and that is a really nice thing to know.
