We were super hungry after farmers market so we cruised for breakfast. A competitor was more crowded so my daughter said lemme introduce you to a new one. She drove to The Roost Cafe. I scoured the menu and was excited to find so many hash choices. I was moved by the Irish Burrito, but ordered Linda's omelette; while my daughter went with the eggs Benedict. In a town that takes its breakfast seriously, and where I've probably worked my way through more menus and reviews than I should admit, this one quietly climbed right to the top of my list. My omelette was exactly what you want when you order one. Fluffy without being dry, full of flavor without trying too hard, and cooked like someone in the kitchen actually cares about eggs. The ingredients were balanced and fresh, not just thrown together as filler. The hollandaise sauce was original, I couldn't find a lemon, cheese or any other overwhelming base, it stood out. The hash was perfect. My daughter's eggs Benedict looked like a postcard version of what that dish should be. Perfectly poached eggs, rich hollandaise that didn't feel heavy, and ham that actually tasted like ham instead of just salt delivery. One of those plates where you steal a bite "just to try it" and immediately understand the decision. The real surprise for me was the potato pancake I picked instead of the usual hashbrowns. Light, airy inside, crispy outside, and seasoned just right. Honestly one of the better breakfast potatoes I've had anywhere. If potatoes had a hall of fame, this one would at least get a nomination. The place itself has a warm, comfortable feel. Wood tones, rooster themes everywhere, a relaxed local energy where people look like regulars and first-timers feel welcome anyway. I went for breakfast/brunch recently with two of my friends. I am so sorry to say that all three of us had terrible meals. The omelettes were such a disappointment and the grilled sandwich came with soggy bread that just fell apart. Our bill was almost $85 including tip and two coffees!!! Not a good latte either, weak and without flavor. I hardly ever write bad reviews but we should get a refund for really bad food. All three of us agreed with this assessment. My chocolate chip pancake was tasty, glass of milk cold, and underneath the table? Just a few crinkled up napkins and a empty sugar packet wrapper. My husband ordered the waffle combo with scrambled eggs which is about as basic as you can get. As he forked in the eggs, he found not one, but two loooong black hairs underneath the eggs, plastered to the plate by the grease. Yeah, we're done. We paid for the food and left. My advice? Wish I could rate the food but we never got it. Waited outside for ten minutes. Get seated, wait another ten minutes before our server sees us and gets us drinks and takes our order. We then waited for an hour, with no food (two omelettes and a Reuben). One of us approached the server after, and they simply said that a large table had backed up the kitchen. Said large table had gotten their food about thirty minutes earlier. The server had never checked in on us before we approached them, other than to once refill a drink when they happened to be in the area. We walked out and went somewhere else. Very disappointing and a huge waste of time. While I understand that the kitchen backup wasn't the fault of the server, we received no apology or explanation other than the 8 person table they served thirty minutes (!) before us backed the kitchen up. My last experience at the Roost was on Park Ave. here in town. I and others really enjoyed it. Here are the reasons why: Abundance of delicious breakfast food, reasonable prices, and timely. Fast forward to new Roost: Not AS good, rather expensive and smaller (much smaller) portions. My party and I ordered bacon eggs and hashbrowns...it took almost 45 minutes to arrive at the table. Not special, not extra delicious either. Bill was $53.00 / 2 ppl. I wanted to faint...oh, that was with 2 black coffees, also. I support the business because I like the owner, Linda. In days gone by, her Papa Larry (Rest in peace) treated us with Pat and Larry's steakhouse. Good people!!! I WILL be back...just not soon.
