Skip this place. Seriously. We arrived at 1:28 pm on Monday, September 7 2026. The sign posted on their glass door stated they were open until 2 pm. and the red OPEN light was still on. We held the door for an elderly couple leaving as we entered, so for the sake of argument let's say we crossed their threshold at exactly 1:30 pm. "Hostess" ( college girl with messy hair under a baseball cap) immediately informs us they are CLOSED. No hello no greeting at all, just and abrupt , "We are closed." Huh. Sign says 2 pm?!!! She kinda shrugs us off with a parting comment, "we stop seating at 1:30." News to me, we've been coming here for five plus years and always between 1:30 and 2:00 pm. Never ever had a problem or had anyone tell us about this 1:30 pm seating rule. Ok. But I show her my phone. "it's 1:30 now" and she just shrugs and says sorry. Disappointed, we cruise over to The Farmers Skillet located a few miles away in Chico on Rio Lindo. We strolled in at 1:50 pm, noting they also close at 2 pm. I ask politely if we are too late even though our hostess already has two menus in her hand and a smile on her face. "Not at all," she exclaims and then says "Welcome". Service there was warm, and unhurried. The Roost could learn a lesson here. If your 24/7 policy is to stop serving half an hour prior to closing then it should be posted, and door locked maybe? I know Deja Vu (also in Chico, on the Esplanade) closes at 2 pm and they have the CLOSED sign up with door locked at 1:45 pm. We shan't be returning. Very disrespectful and unnecessary. IF in fact that IS the policy of this diner and not just the whim of a lazy student/hostess then we should still have been seated. It was 1:30 pm as we entered. Shame on management. Know your staff and make sure they are operating with YOUR agenda and priorities, not theirs. read more

We were super hungry after farmers market so we cruised for breakfast. A competitor was more crowded so my daughter said lemme introduce you to a new one. She drove to The Roost Cafe. I scoured the menu and was excited to find so many hash choices. I was moved by the Irish Burrito, but ordered Linda's omelette; while my daughter went with the eggs Benedict. In a town that takes its breakfast seriously, and where I've probably worked my way through more menus and reviews than I should admit, this one quietly climbed right to the top of my list. My omelette was exactly what you want when you order one. Fluffy without being dry, full of flavor without trying too hard, and cooked like someone in the kitchen actually cares about eggs. The ingredients were balanced and fresh, not just thrown together as filler. The hollandaise sauce was original, I couldn't find a lemon, cheese or any other overwhelming base, it stood out. The hash was perfect. My daughter's eggs Benedict looked like a postcard version of what that dish should be. Perfectly poached eggs, rich hollandaise that didn't feel heavy, and ham that actually tasted like ham instead of just salt delivery. One of those plates where you steal a bite "just to try it" and immediately understand the decision. The real surprise for me was the potato pancake I picked instead of the usual hashbrowns. Light, airy inside, crispy outside, and seasoned just right. Honestly one of the better breakfast potatoes I've had anywhere. If potatoes had a hall of fame, this one would at least get a nomination. The place itself has a warm, comfortable feel. Wood tones, rooster themes everywhere, a relaxed local energy where people look like regulars and first-timers feel welcome anyway. Pancakes were delicious, ended up using the biscuit gravy as the syrup because it was SO good. Hash-browns are perfect here. Hollandaise was a 8/10. Bacon was standard. The biscuit was light and fluffy but structured enough to hold gravy. Latte was fantastic and not overly sweet. Price was very reasonable for everything we ordered. Owner's policy is pretty arrogant. Food is generally very good, but they nickel and dime you over little things and don't inform you there will be extra charge on what is normally complimentary at other places. We ordered Eggs Benedict (our usual). Asked if it's possible to get a bit extra hollandaise (no problem but no explanation it costs extra). Eggs arrived with yolks fully cooked and we informed the server that we wanted the eggs with yolks runny. She said by default the eggs are cooked "medium". We asked that they fix my husband's plate. I kept mine cause I'm not so particular about getting them actually medium (by definition: cooked whites and some runny yolk). We have eaten these multiple times and usually the eggs are done right. We were surprised when they charged us for an extra two eggs plus extra charge for a side of Hollandaise. Bill was $56 2 Benedicts and no drinks. At that price, they should be perfect the first time, and loosen the clamp on charging for a little side. Also, I remember they were the only place in town that charged an egg surcharge when prices were high and they kept that surcharge once the prices dropped. read more

I went for breakfast/brunch recently with two of my friends. I am so sorry to say that all three of us had terrible meals. The omelettes were such a disappointment and the grilled sandwich came with soggy bread that just fell apart. Our bill was almost $85 including tip and two coffees!!! Not a good latte either, weak and without flavor. I hardly ever write bad reviews but we should get a refund for really bad food. All three of us agreed with this assessment. Wish I could rate the food but we never got it. Waited outside for ten minutes. Get seated, wait another ten minutes before our server sees us and gets us drinks and takes our order. We then waited for an hour, with no food (two omelettes and a Reuben). One of us approached the server after, and they simply said that a large table had backed up the kitchen. Said large table had gotten their food about thirty minutes earlier. The server had never checked in on us before we approached them, other than to once refill a drink when they happened to be in the area. We walked out and went somewhere else. Very disappointing and a huge waste of time. While I understand that the kitchen backup wasn't the fault of the server, we received no apology or explanation other than the 8 person table they served thirty minutes (!) before us backed the kitchen up. My last experience at the Roost was on Park Ave. here in town. I and others really enjoyed it. Here are the reasons why: Abundance of delicious breakfast food, reasonable prices, and timely. Fast forward to new Roost: Not AS good, rather expensive and smaller (much smaller) portions. My party and I ordered bacon eggs and hashbrowns...it took almost 45 minutes to arrive at the table. Not special, not extra delicious either. Bill was $53.00 / 2 ppl. I wanted to faint...oh, that was with 2 black coffees, also. I support the business because I like the owner, Linda. In days gone by, her Papa Larry (Rest in peace) treated us with Pat and Larry's steakhouse. Good people!!! I WILL be back...just not soon.
