French Dip
Lisa W.

Ordered the French dip, never have I tasted something so awful. It's greasy, old roast beef. Full of fat and no flavor. Tried to give it to my dogs and even they wouldn't eat it. I wish Jacks was open late so I could have just ate there.

Garlic bread.

I've been coming here for many years. Before we go any further into my review, this is a diner, not a 5-star luxurious restaurant. Let's keep that in mind. This is a nice, inviting and "cozy" diner. The lighting is nice, the spacing between tables is fine and you feel at home. The staff are always friendly, the service is reasonably good, you neither wait too long, nor too little to where you feel rushed, in my experience at least, and the food always comes hot and delicious. When I'm here, I usually get a hamburger or sometimes opt for a dinner option, such as the meat loaf or the chicken strips (there are other options), which are accompanied by your choice of potatoes: mashed, fried, baked. And then you get to choose between a muffin, piece of cornbread or garlic bread. Whatever you get, it'll be sure to fill you up without leaving a hole in your wallet. Have there been mishaps with my orders before? Sure, there definitely have been, but they were resolved and always done without argument and a warm smile from the staff.

Freshly squeezed.

Charles excels at running the place. From the moment we arrived to departure he keeps moving about with determination, and very possibly a proud Marine? as he shows all the good traits the finest do. Food, yes, has its hiccups but never enough to condemn permanently. Service as of late, at least 6 months or more, borders on exemplary, above average. Considerate, well mannered, extremely pleasant personalities or we been lucky to be served by the best. Seniors score what is probably a very enticing set of choices under the Senior Menu. Let's just say it delivers in general. Kids also benefit from value options. Patrons in general seemed satisfied in Cozy as attendance is not dismal, meaning no action, sad. I understand they been around since the 1960's which attest to their well deserved place in the community of this great place called Chico. Grievances: Clam Chowder (Friday's only) where are the clams? Are they still swimming in the ocean? Let's leave it at that as the staff is polite and accommodating I'm sure. A great manager directs a place like a fine tuned orchestra, and here in Cozy, now displaying modern black outfits as seen in very nice places, Cozy seems to make its own kind of music. 4.5 Stars.

We've come here three times now - 2 times for the broasted chicken dinner and once for breakfast. The chicken dinner deals are sooo good! They come with a ton of food for a super great price and the chicken is so delicious. It's super crispy on the outside while staying super juicy on the inside. Highly recommend! The pies are also bomb. Breakfast is good too. We spent about $40 for the 4 pc chicken + an extra breast, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, and two slices of pie!

This place cannot be best in Chico !!

I'm honestly so disappointed how much this place has changed, and not for the best. I've been eating here for over 20 years. The service is not cozy. I walked in too pick up food no greetings from any of the staff, very unfriendly. 3 Waitress didn't know anything about my order. The order was never placed. I was very surprised by the staff's work ethic. I will never stop foot in this establishment. Carmen .

This is a fantastic spot!…read more It ended up being near our hotel, so it wins for convenience, and it's downtown location. We didn't realize we were in for such a treat here though. They have an extensive menu, and it is set up so you can choose your own adventure, and put together exactly what you want, but I ended up going for the Rib Eye special breakfast which ended up being a great choice! Chicken Fried Steak and their Omelettes also looked like they were very popular. They also offer great mimosa specials, and if you order three (for $13?) they will let you share them among multilpe people! Had a couple of great breakfasts here and loved the old school diner vibe - service was super friendly as well! Great spot!

Each time we have gone, prices have been reasonable, portions good, service excellent, and the food great. It's an old mid-century diner (looks like an old Sambo's to me, similar to, but different from the classic Denny's buildings of that area) so has a great diner ambience. Service is friendly and very attentive. Chicken fried steak, huevos rancheros, and buttermilk pancakes are excellent (5 stars). Corned beef hash of very good (4 stars). They also offer a side of one pancake with some dishes instead of toast, and I really like that. Very few places still do that and they get extra points for that option. Chicken fried steak has a nice crispy coating and is nicely cooked. The buttermilk pancakes are particularly excellent. Not too big, nicely toasty on the outside, light on the inside.

I scoured the menu and was excited to find so many hash choices. I was moved by the Irish Burrito, but ordered Linda's omelette; while my daughter went with the eggs Benedict. In a town that takes its breakfast seriously, and where I've probably worked my way through more menus and reviews than I should admit, this one quietly climbed right to the top of my list. My omelette was exactly what you want when you order one. Fluffy without being dry, full of flavor without trying too hard, and cooked like someone in the kitchen actually cares about eggs. The ingredients were balanced and fresh, not just thrown together as filler. The hollandaise sauce was original, I couldn't find a lemon, cheese or any other overwhelming base, it stood out. The hash was perfect. My daughter's eggs Benedict looked like a postcard version of what that dish should be. Perfectly poached eggs, rich hollandaise that didn't feel heavy, and ham that actually tasted like ham instead of just salt delivery. One of those plates where you steal a bite "just to try it" and immediately understand the decision. The real surprise for me was the potato pancake I picked instead of the usual hashbrowns. Light, airy inside, crispy outside, and seasoned just right. Honestly one of the better breakfast potatoes I've had anywhere. If potatoes had a hall of fame, this one would at least get a nomination. The place itself has a warm, comfortable feel. Wood tones, rooster themes everywhere, a relaxed local energy where people look like regulars and first-timers feel welcome anyway. Service was friendly and efficient without feeling rushed. In a city full of strong breakfast spots, this might actually be my current favorite. That's not something I say lightly.

Great location within the Chico Mall ( marketplace ) Stopped in for a late breakfast after shopping at the mall. I had the lighter breakfast with pancakes and 2 thick cut bacon slices and a scrambled egg. I really liked the bacon as it was crispy as ordered! Everything was really good! My friend got Joes hobo omelete with a ton of crispy hash browns. It also came with a biscuit and for 99 cents more you get the gravy on top. The portion was huge and everything was really good! Plenty of leftovers! They also have some yummy looking desserts and pies! They serve beer and wine as well as mimosas. It's cutely decorated with bears. Waitresses were friendly and order came out quickly ( thanks Monique)! I will definitely come back when in Chico!

I'm in Chico for a little bit and found there's a Black Bear here. The onion rings I was really impressed with last, so we decided to get a whole side order for around $8 bucks. It arrived before our entrees, of the patty melt and the bacon cheeseburger salad. I guess i was expecting a bug mound of onion rings with the full appetizer order, so I was a little underwhelmed with the portion, but it tasted good anyways. I found you can substitute say fries off a burger or sandwich for the onion rings no charge, which I find rare in restaurants that you can get onion rings no extra charge. I'll just get the onion rings that way next time. My patty melt was mos fab and actually cooked med rare as ordered! Hardly any place cooks as I order, normally you just get well done no matter how you order a burger. My friend's bacon cheeseburger salad was really good, that was my choice if I didn't get the patty melt! I'll still come to Black Bear Diners, I'll just get onion rings instead of fries. Service was fine for our visit as well.

We had kids with us, so we got there an hour before it became 21+. Everyone was friendly, the food came pretty quick relative to how hopping it was. We ordered: Pho-rench dip (w/fries)--I think this was a DDD sandwich, so it's not some hidden gem, but it was super tasty. You cannot go wrong. The slight lime-iness of the dipping broth really kicked it into turbo. Also, we all likes the steak fries--a note on that later. Chicken Cheese Steak (w/fries)--my wife loved it. I tried a bite, and it was great--a little mushroom-forward, but we like that. Mac and Cheese--do not be fooled by the slightly smaller bowl, it is very filling. My son can eat his birth weight in pasta, and he had to tap out! I tried a bite--it was creamy (not grainy at all), and was just the right amount of salty and cheese-funky. Grilled cheese and tomato soup (w/fries)--perhaps the least successful for my family, but only because my daughter prefers a smoky/spicy tomato soup, and this was more on the sweet side. The griled cheese was of the "crispy cheese on the outside" ilk, which my daughter thought was really good. So, totally would go again. IMPORTANT NOTE (to people traveling through Chico, or who don't want to take leftovers)--the sandwiches are pretty big, and the add-on fry order is also sizeable. If we were going again tomorrow, we would either order 1 fry instead of 3. Or split a sandwich. Very very good pub.
