It's made by distilling a neutral spirit with anise, fennel, coriander, and other spices, then diluting it with water. Ouzo is known for its distinctive licorice flavor and its tendency to turn milky when water is added, a phenomenon called louching or the ouzo effect. Unfortunately, during a recent visit with my family, I had to ask multiple times for gluten-free options, and I was ultimately served food that contained gluten after being reassured it was safe. This left me seriously ill and embarrassed for recommending the restaurant. While the appetizer was comped, the gesture didn't address the larger issue of inconsistent training around dietary accommodations. I truly hope the restaurant improves staff training so this doesn't happen to others. I would love to return if I knew gluten-free safety was handled consistently, but for now I can't recommend it. read more

I've never had an upscale Mediterranean meal before and this place was exceptional, a truly memorable meal from beginning to end. The meze moon combo, like a sampler of all the appetizer, was delicious. Each part of it felt handcrafted with love, down to the hummus which is usually pretty average. Had the Greek salad, nothing special but fresh veggies, perfect amount of dressing. The lamb shank took the cake, one of the best lambs I've had in my life. Portions are generous, prices are fair and the flavors are unforgettable. I've eaten at a lot of restaurants in Chico, and Meze Moon is in a league of its own. If you want food that's fresh, healthy, and absolutely delicious, this is the spot. Chico needs more places like this so don't sleep on it. Meze Moon is one of my favorite restaurants in Chico. The owner, Emin, is one of the nicest, most generous and personable people I've met. He tries very hard to make your experience special. The atmosphere of the restaurant is warm and inviting, and the food is amazing. We had the appetizer sampler, which has the best hummus I've ever had. It was so smooth and perfectly garlicky. We also had a meat platter that had beef koobideh kabab, beef shish kabab, chicken shish kabab, and salmon, and everything was delicious. The salmon was so perfect and flavorful. He also sources everything locally, which I love! He made my birthday very special, opened a bottle of champagne for me, had balloons and flowers on the table for me, and didn't charge me a cent. The service was absolutely stellar from all members of the waitstaff. He also served us Baklava with a birthday candle and Turkish coffee. He even read our coffee grounds when we were done. Possibly the best Mediterranean food I have ever had. The baba ganoush, the hummus and the tzatziki were among the best. The house doogh seemed to be made fresh and was served with ice cubes. It was so very refreshing. Our host and servers were extremely attentive. More than once I gestured to my wife about something, like something on the TV and within moments I had the host or a server at my table. We were looking for a light meal and ordered spanakopita and a meza plate (combination appetizers). It was light and delicious and more than we could finish. There were colorful photos on the walls and quaint stained glass lamps for lighting. The Middle Eastern music was pleasant as well. We had been here before (same building) when it was Petra's. We did not recall the name and assumed it was the same restaurant. In chatting with the owner we mentioned that we did not recall the food being quite so extraordinary. My wife and I agreed that the food was much improved from our previous visit. That is when the owner told us he had only owned it for two years. We enjoyed our meal at Petra's several years back but Meze Moon was remarkably better. If you like Mediterranean and find yourself in Chico, California try this small charming cafe. read more

Hours were listed incorrectly and my honey called them to check - they were in fact closing early but he knew I really wanted to eat out and sit in the restaurant and have a little date. He told the lady that I really wanted to eat there and she asked what we wanted to order - he ordered the mixed plate with salad and when we walked in she seated us and it wasn't even 5 mins and our yummy fresh amazing food arrived! Yummy! I used an Uber eats coupon to try this place on my lunch break. I got the falafel wrap and a side soup. It was really delicious and the wrap was HUGE, like 10+ inches !! We're visiting our son in Chico and I was craving for Mediterranean. It's my favorite food to say the least. My son suggested this and wanted to try this place too as it just opened. I'm very picky when it comes to my favorites, and was a little hesitant about trying it. I've tried many Mediterranean/Greek/Turkish cuisines and i absolutely loved it. I've my favorite places to go everywhere we go on a trip. I've come to compare my favorite dishes on all the restaurants we visited. Moussaka is my fav amongst their dishes (I've tried it in London and Greece - where authenticity is at its finest!) So I decided I will try their moussaka here. Honestly, it was perfect to its core! The softness of the vegetables are great to the palate, the sauce is blended well, and the bechamel is very light and not overpowering. My kids and my husband all Loved their orders. I love their Baklava - this is by far the best for me, not strongly sweet, plus they have gave us an array of small bites deserts to taste and free mint tea to conclude the diner. What can I say about the service except SUPERB! Emin the owner personally attended to us, what a personality, joyful and connects with all his guests (which all Mediterranean restaurants that i go to does, but Emin took time to talk and make his guests comfortable). He makes you feel that you're a very important part of the night. The whole staffs are courteous and attentive to whatever is needed at our table. If I could give service a 10 stars I would. And of course, the place is immaculate! Clean, quiet and very inviting. I love the decors, the lanterns that lit up the place. It's a pretty good size. Excellent caring service by Prestyn. Overall the four of us were happy with our meals and especially the service. The Mediterranean octopus leg was good. Moussaka was delicious (different than I've had elsewhere). The Kani Yarik was nice. The Lamb Shish Kebab was descent. The lamb a bit overcooked however it was still moist. No alcohol for sale however they did allow us to bring wine with charging us $10 for corkage fee. Based on their menu prices cloth napkins instead of paper napkins might add a bit more "class" to Meze Moon. Also cleaner menus would be nice (my menu had some food spots inside). I'm glad we have a nice sitdown Mediterranean restaurant in Chico and wish them a lot of success. I hope you will visit them. read more

I ordered the Mediterranean steak medium rare. We were the only people in there and it took at least 45 min to get the food out. As I walked in Friday night I was greeted with warmth and an infectious smile by the owner. He allowed me to be seated while waiting for two friends. The mint tea was refreshing and the warmth hit the spot (I don't drink tea regularly and loved it). The special appetizer was an eggplant dish which also surprised me with how tasty it was. The falafel plate was so filling - my friend and I split that and each ordered scrumptious soup. The lentil soup will be something I come back for! We picked up our To Go order 10 minutes late and spent 10 minutes driving home. We ordered humus, falafel and the lamb/beef gyro. Unfortunately the food had cooled off by the time we started eating. The flavors were good and the dishes were plenty for four (4) adults to share. They should have included more flat bread. I will be going back and will dine at the restaurant next time. I truly have never had a falafel that moist yet crispy, and so beautifully seasoned, it even had a slight kick! Spanikopita was phenomenal, flakier than a french croissant!!
