We found Grana after leaving another Chico establishment that had terrible food. The hostess and staff were all very pleasant and accommodating. We sat outside and thankfully had a heater as it was a chilly evening. I enjoyed the chicken and my fiancé had a margherita pizza. Both meals were very good. The wife loves farm to table restaurants. When we were invited to dinner at Grana's, we were excited to go. The weather was warm, and we chose patio seating. We started with a bottle of wine and a cheese plate. For shared plates, we ordered the pork raghu and the meat lovers pizza, and the waitress recommended the peach pizza, which was a wonderful curveball that was something we never tried. I was in the Chico area and decided to try Grana after it's showing on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. This is a beautiful restaurant with outstanding staff. Our server, Annika, was tremendous and even laughed at my stupid sense of humor. 5 stars on service We tried their Braised Pork Ragu that was featured on the show (5 stars) and a Margherita pizza (3 stars). The Braised Pork Ragu was full of flavor and super tender. The house made pasta was delicious although a little too Al dente. Still a wonderful dish over all. The Margherita pizza was just average. It need a little more cheese and a firmer bottom crust. Maybe a another minute in the wood fired oven would have helped. My biggest issue with Grana is the cost. I know food costs are continuously rising, but value is important these days as well. While delicious, the Pork Ragu was not a $26 dish. The portion size was great for 1 person, however, that's a little pricey for a lunch item. The Margherita pizza, priced at $22 should have been closer to $15. It was more of a personal pizza than a dish that was meant to share. Over all, this is a wonderful restaurant with great food. A little more reasonable pricing lifts this to a 5 star rating. read more

I had a dinner with a girlfriend at Grana back in late October. It was my first time there, but my friend is a regular & wine club member. We arrived for our 6pm patio reservation right on time to find out they had just given our table away. After unraveling what had been done on their end, they scrambled to find us space. It wasn't an ideal first impression. We caught the patio on a perfect Chico evening - not too hot, not yet cold - and it was a really aesthetically pleasant space. Dog friendly, too! Since my friend is a wine club member, we started with a tasting. Hers ended up being complimentary, while mine was not. I don't know of another wine club that doesn't include tastings for the member + 1-3 guests. It was odd, at minimum. Our server was attentive and kind, and overall the food was good. The wedge salad was crunchy & fresh, and composed in a thoughtful & artistic way. The sausage & pepper pizza was also good, just enough to split with my friend. I'm not sure it earned a $27 price tag, though (size, ingredients, flavor, etc). Bodega Slice Shop is putting out better pies at a fraction of the price. All in all, the Grana patio was pretty ideal in terms of ambiance for a girls night with an old friend. The wine & food was good, but pricey for the value, so it'll probably take another invite from her to bring me back. read more

Had to come back and update since it had been so long ago that I reviewed. Grana has impressed me over the years and there's always something to make me happy. Love the farm to table freshness that Grana prides itself on. Food is always delicious. Service is kind, with great recommendations. Desserts are worth it, so save some room! Food is fresh, but really overpriced for what you get and the pizza is "watery" and not very substantial, they are not generous with the toppings, especially given what they charge. Service is horrible! Seems like drying glasses is wasaayyy more important than checking in with your table. Took a long time to get our food and there we're only a few tables occupied. Overall I just really get the impression that they are trying to be something they aren't. They should also consider lowering their prices. Food was tasty and reasonably priced. I initially thought maybe the food portions were a little small but ended up being just right. Had a twist on a Negroni that was a little sweeter but balanced made with sake and chinotto. Took my mom here for a nice lunch a couple of days ago. Good- addition to the Chico food scene (which is kinda sad tbh). Food: Very nice. Seemed pretty healthy. -Gazpacho - nice, chunky style - they put croutons in it which I thought was odd for gazpacho but it worked. Not a huge portion but enough. -Puttanesca - I failed to read the fine print - I expected spaghetti, and it was zucchini noodles. Also, didn't really taste like a typical puttanesca. It was zucchini noodles with smashed tomatoes, kalamata olives, and bread crumbs. I felt very healthy and righteous eating it even though it wasn't what I wanted. The portion was fine, but a little pricy for what it was. IMO, this would make a better side dish. -Sandwich - I forget what it was called but my mom ordered a sandwich with some kind of meat, muffuletta, spinach. She loved it and she's picky as hell. They don't serve espresso which seems odd for an Italian-focused menu. Just get a Nespresso machine, people! Ambiance - not a ton of seating inside; kind of garage-like and loud. It used to be a garage so there's that. The outside patio was ok. It was about 90 degrees and as it was shady, we were able to sit out there. Will be too hot when it gets over 100 for sure. They had plenty of heaters for when it's chilly. Service - the waiter was good. attentive, friendly. I wish he would have called out that the Puttanesca wasn't actual pasta - I had asked him for a recommendation. The host was friendly and sociable once he deigned to acknowledge us - kind of like a doctor in that regard. We did stand there for a good 7 minutes before being acknowledged while he cleaned tables and sat the people in front of us. Price for value - a little high by Chico standards. One sandwich, one soup, one plate of vegetables, one prosecco, and two iced teas = $80. Overall, the menu choices were very good, service and food felt upscale. I absolutely love this place. I've been wanting to try it and finally had the chance. They were able to squeeze us into the bar for dinner and we had the absolute best time. Excellent service. Crostini appetizer: Absolutely delicious, I do wish the leaves had been more bit size or sliced into ribbons as the bigger leaves move around while trying to eat this. Their special was shrimp and polenta: the shrimp are tail on, which bothers me at any restaurant, the polenta was decent but I wish it had added cheese to be a little more flavorful. The red sauce was fine. They had added green onion to this that was sautéed in the red sauce, but since they were whole and not cut up or used as a garnish, left a little to be desired. Salmon entree: when I tell you this is the best salmon I've ever had. Absolute perfection, on a bed of mash potato paired with a caper sauce and broccolini. The salmon skin was crispy and divine. 10/10 recommend, go get this and please make it for me every day. Special butterscotch pudding desert with lemon shortbread and salted caramel: very tasty! Chocolate dessert thing: this was SO decadent. Perfect for two people, I was so full already it was hard to finish alone. Topped with gorgeous creme fresh and hazelnuts. Drinks: we both had The Grand, make sure to squeeze your lemon into it, it truly brings out the excellence in that drink!! read more

We came to Chico for a show at CSU and chose Grana for dinner beforehand. The Grana Chopped Salad was fabulous--the bold flavors were incredible. I added anchovies, and they were the boquerones type, which was a perfect addition. Two of us had a cup of the soup of the day--butternut squash--which was delicious! I've walked past this place a hundred times thinking, "One day..." Well, today was that day. I ordered the Grana Sandwich -- cold cuts and greens on their house-baked bread. It was good, but not "write-home-about-it" good. I threw in a small side salad and the Grand drink, which turned out to be the MVP of the meal. The waitress was sweet, but honestly, the whole thing felt... meh. For $16-$18, I thought the sandwich would at least come with a side or a back massage -- no such luck. Then came the surprise plot twists: 20% gratuity auto-added for our party of six (okay, fair, but maybe a heads-up?), and a fee for using a bank card -- also not mentioned. So yes, I basically paid $40+ for a sandwich. Was it good? Sure. Was it $40+ good? Not really. Will I be back? Probably -- I'm curious about the dinner menu. But next time I'll come armed with cash, low expectations, and a snack in my purse... just in case. read more

I just had the best meal I have had in years at Grana! First off I'd like to note that it is very well staffed. There was very little wait time and the food came very quickly. Also all the staff I came in contact with were absolutely wonderful! we sat outside under the twinkly lights and the propane heaters were great! We were very comfortable and it was so pretty! Every little thing was absolutely delicious and beautiful! I started with the Farmalot salad. Everything was crisp and fresh! The cheeses were delicious and the toasted nuts were such a nice addition. I also had the butternut squash soup which was melted in your mouth! But the star on the plate was the mushroom risotto! Absolutely out of this world and I highly recommend!!! Both my husband and I enjoyed every morsel and to top it off was the most amazing dessert!!! I have never walked out of a restaurant before, but did so here, just a bizarre and uncomfortable experience. Server was just unkind and had a pretentious way leaving me and my daughter feeling deeply unwelcome. We are super nice and smiley, a regular little mom/daughter duo. Long story short, we waited 1/2 hour for two pizzas that never arrived; had a server who left us feeing like we were these wretched people he was forced to lower his standards to even speak to, so we quietly left.  I later spoke to the owner who was nice but ultimately seemed to focus on a kitchen delay and the server being stressed.  Server did not seem stressed to us at all.  So, I agree with other reviews suggesting avoiding it, I noticed lots of reviews about how rude the staff are and other negative and just odd experiences at this restaurant. One review says it was the worst dining experience they have ever had, and I think that's about the same for me. There is a review from 6 years ago with the name of the same server saying how deeply rude he was back then.  So, it's clear to me that the owner knows very well what their vibe is, the absurd rudeness of at least one server, and it is not important to him. I would not recommend dining here, the gamble of leaving feeling awful is just not worth it. read more

Grana is my go to restaurant even now that we've moved. Every time I come to Chico I know I can get excellent fresh quality food. I have a soy allergy and I know all their food is without soy. If ever we find ourselves in Chico again, this would be the place we would return to. The menu included in-season local tomatoes cut in thick slices and topped with mozzarella, basil and olive oil. This is by far the best restaurant I've ever been to. And I am a foodie and go to so many restaurants. I love the way it smells when you walk in. I love how attentive everybody is. I love that the owner is always there an visible. I also so appreciative of their cold case that you can buy ingredients from. Valentine's day, took my son on a lunch date. Our whole family had gone there a couple of days prior and could not stop thinking about the Magherita pizza and that darn budino. Manager sat us, and didn't really make any comment about us coming back, despite me letting him know we liked it so much the other day, we came back. But only my son and I this time. Jordan is a gem! Truly. Jordan, if you read this, your life will be AWESOME because YOU are awesome, my darling! GREAT job to the whole staff from the kitchen to the waitresses. This guy must be a pill to work for. We ordered: * the pizza special of the day * farm green salad, again. * risotto, also again. * buratta * budino * lemon tart to go. * san pellegrino sparkling juice * the gran cocktail We spent $147 including a credit card surcharge of $3 and change and tip. As we are already paying to go, with half of the pizza already boxed and the lemon tart packaged, enters the rest of our family coming from their own outing with the two littles carrying a small container of ice cream each. We were sitting at a two-chair table. No one else sat down. They were waiting for us to receive the receipt for me to sign so all of us leave together. Comes the manager out of nowhere ( didn't come to us before to check if we were doing well not once) and tells us "no outside food allowed in the restaurant." And I forgot to mention, it was raining all day. It pretty much rained all day. They were just waiting for us, by our table. Again, we were at a small table with two chairs by the window, near the wine racks standing on the floor. Well, screw you and your rude self. Farm to table concept doesn't need to come with its manure. Keep that to yourself. Good luck finding enough people to spend that much on a stupid lunch in a college town, a$$hole. read more

My mother was visiting Chico for the first time from Philadelpia last week. She is 100% Italian and was looking for a place with authentic Italian Cuisine and a nice glass of wine. This place NAILED IT. Both of those things were available. The waiter that we had was very knowledgeable about the entire menu and also the wine. The food was absolutely astounding. The appetizers, the main course and even the dessert. This goes in my book of one of the best restuarants that Chico has to offer. Everything is farm to table and locally sourced. Usually when i find this being the case the price skyrockets. I would have to say their pricing of what they offer was not unreasonable in the least. The steaks here are undoubtedly the best in town, all variations of it have been great. The cheese plate is always a delicious and interesting experience. The staff are really friendly. The atmosphere is nice. Their patio is beautiful. All around great place that's always a great experience.
