A very enjoyable time at Tres Hombres. Food and service was great! We think at the top of Mexican food in Chico!

Had a friend show up from out of state and he wanted to know if we knew of any good Mexican restaurants. We being new to the area ourselves, we really didn't know of any good restaurants of any type so it was more or less a stab in the dark. So, so glad we happened on Tres Hombres. When we arrived the place was buzzing. I'm not usually good with loud but I do know that restaurants that are quiet indicate one of two things, either they are very exclusive or they aren't very good and this place was definitely not exclusive. I enjoyed the decor, lots of wood & earth tones despite the noise, was calming and the hanging, silver meteor like lights were a trip. Service was great. A waiter showed up almost immediately to take our drink orders and upon bringing them asked if we wanted appetizers. I do not recall what my wife ordered, (something chicken lol) and our son had a monster of a burrito which looked delicious. I was focused on the grilled avocado tacos. The description on the menu is two heirloom corn tortillas,chayote squash, and fajita veggies with salsa taqueria , corn salsa ( I wanted a bowl of just that!), cilantro, and avocado. I wish I had had the good sense to take a picture but you can Google the menu. I enjoyed the fun of adding their own spin on some usual favorites and styles and we're already looking forward to another visit. It's going to be tough to try something else on their menu, those grilled avocado tacos were amazing. read more

Dropped in here while visiting Chico and wandering around town. Got flagged down by one of the friendly servers who invited us to have a seat on the patio and enjoy a happy hour margarita. It was a warm day and we obliged. Great little patio, and a great spot to people watch. We had a margarita , some chips and a few happy hour snacks, and enjoyed the afternoon for a bit. This is definitely a College town spot. Food bland My burrito was not hot and the beans cold Smh. It was Suspect when I check there reviews but my college kids wanted to eat here. I'm thinking more so for the Margaritas. The Don Don Margaritas was good but back to the food beans have no flavor. My sister, my husband & I came here Sun 8/23 for Happy Hour around 5pm. We chose to sit in a booth, and Michelle came by to take our order. Both my sister & I got a Grande Fruit Margarita. I got a blended Pineapple flavored one w/ rum instead Tequila $11.25 which tasted a lot like a Pina Colada. My sister got a Blackberry flavored one on the rocks $10.75. They were both delicious. My husband got a 16oz West Ghost IPA $4. For appetizers we all shared Spicy Bean Dip $6, & Guacamole $6. For entrees My husband got the Chingalinga $6, & my sister & I both went with the Chicken Quesadilla $6. I also wanted to try the Papas Tacos $6. We went to Tres Hombres yesterday, and unfortunately the service was a complete disaster. Our waitress came to the table and asked what I wanted to order. I started giving her my order, but before I could finish, she cut me off and started explaining to me how I was supposed to order. When she finished, I told her that I had actually been trying to give her my order before she interrupted me, so I had to start over. Then she simply walked away. She never asked if we wanted anything to drink, and she didn't even take my fiancée's order. After that, she never returned to our table. We watched her walk past us multiple times and continue helping other tables, but she never once stopped to check on us. Eventually another waiter took over our table. We actually had to ask a busboy just to get us something to drink with our meal. At that point I asked another waiter if I could speak with a manager. Unfortunately, the manager seemed even less interested in what had happened. I got the distinct impression that she didn't really care about the situation and was mostly interested in ending the conversation and walking away. The food itself was average, but the service made the entire experience terrible. Bad service can happen anywhere, but when management doesn't seem concerned about it either, that's a much bigger problem. Based on our experience, I wouldn't recommend Tres Hombres. read more

Visited October 30th..see receipt as always. Went here to visit friends. This restaurant takes up a large corner spot off Broadway in Chico. Very close to the University. We got there when they opened at 1130am. Full bar and inside and outdoor seating. They also have a taco bar which I thought was pretty awesome ( made to order). We ordered the combo with mole ( chocolate flavor). The enchilada was great ..tamale ok. Beans and cilantro rice was good. We had a margarita and a glass of red wine. Nice pour on the wine. They have complimentary chips and salsa. The house salsa was excellent..alittle spicy and alot of flavor. Terry ( great employee) also gave me spicy salsa which was awesome! There is plenty of seating and they also have happy hour and specials on certain days. PABLO our waiter was the most upbeat and friendliest server I have encountered in a long time! So pleasant and accommodating ! What an asset ! Great time and will be back for the taco bar when I am in the area! read more

Tres is a Chico classic & I think also hit or miss. The service was good, waiter was nice & on top of it. Margarita was pretty good, food was mid. It wasn't bad but just meh. I love that they have indoor/patio or bar seating, that is a + in my book. My friend ordered the quesadillas & she said it was pretty good but really messy. The birria enchiladas were ok, I wouldn't order them again. I would go back though and try something else, they had a lot of options to choose from! read more

Typically I really like Tres food and drinks but... this time was not on par with my previous experiences. First things first though, the waitress was great. Great personality, and helpful, she gets a 10 out of 10. The negative of this visit were the drinks. They were TERRIBLE. We went to this restaurant for a late night snack and drinks, particularly margaritas. I ordered a jalapeño margarita and it the most bland, non-spicy, watered down drink ever. It literally tasted like water with chunks of jalapeños in it- No Joke. Definitely not work $10.50. My friend had the same complaint, their "melon" margarita was beyond watery and bland too. I dare say, someone is pouring water in their booze bottles here. Next time we go out for cocktails, it won't be here. How does this place not have a 5 star rating? We eat out at some nice restaurants and I have to say I LOVED this place! My Pepita salad with cilantro lime dressing was AMAZING! The grilled chicken on it was so flavorful! First the chips and both red and green salsa were awesome! The Perfect Marg was just that, PERFECT. I must have said 5 times, "I LOVE MY FOOD"!My husband and daughter absolutely loved their Asada and Carnitas bowls too! The bartender was our server as we sat in the bar and he was incredible! I wish I remembered his name (we were there on May 9th at around 12:30 pm.) We were just passing through from So Cal, I WISH it was in my hometown! I would eat there everyday! read more

Both green and red salsas are very spicy to the point that it's not enjoyable. Has to mix it with queso to be able to tolerate the heat.

This restaurant is an absolute joke. Our waiter didn't check on us a single time--not once. When I went to the hostess to let her know, she flat-out said "I don't care, we only have two servers." The place was nearly empty, so that attitude was completely uncalled for. I had to literally walk around the restaurant to hunt down my server, and in the middle of all that, they took my $14 drink without any explanation. When I asked where the manager was, every employee acted clueless or refused to answer. The lack of accountability was unbelievable. And if that's not enough, one of the staff members was working in sweatpants. That alone tells you everything you need to know about the level of professionalism here. This place clearly doesn't value customers, service, or basic standards. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Save yourself the frustration and go somewhere--anywhere--else. read more

The food was reheated. I had a carne asada bowl and the beef tasted as if it had been re-sauted. The meat bits were dry and hard. I wouldn't go back.My daughter had the carnitas, it too looked like it had been re-sauted and tasted mediocre. The servers were very nice. read more

I was in town on business and enjoyed great food and drinks at Tres Hombres. Our server, Joseph, was fantastic at providing suggestions based on our preferences. The next day as I was at the airport ready to head home, I realized I had left my corporate credit card at the restaurant. I called the next day and spoke with Brandon and Aaron, both managers, who were very helpful at locating my card. Aaron even volunteered to walk down to the post office and mail it to me. I was so impressed and grateful for them going out of their way to help. I received the card today just in time for my next trip. I'm not sure if this review will matter much, tres hombres is a local mtg place and has been for the last 35 years that I know of. The server was great, the atmosphere is great, and the drinks were very drinkable. Now the food, until they adjust their food please don't set yourself up for the disappointment that will follow your meal. They have the idea that everything including the guacamole needs to be very spicy, don't get me wrong, I enjoy spicy foods but I need guacamole that my 4 yro granddaughter can enjoy ( she loves it but couldn't have it). When I go to a Mexican restaurant I want Mexican ceviche not Peruvian. You already have the locals please fix your menu so that you keep us! Flavor is the secret, making dishes that are spicy for the sake of being spicy is not. Seriously, two types of fish tacos that are basically the same ? Not cool. read more

On positive note ... Service always great. We usually like their margaritas , so decided to grab one and then go on to dinner elsewhere as not a fan of Tres food. But since we were there and having drinks , we decided to go ahead and try to eat there since its been a while and maybe improved. Wrong!!! Had the 3 street tacos and just not good. How do you mess up something so easy and simple ? Still disappointing . We decided we are done. Tres.... Get some cook staff who can cook. It takes just as long to make good food as bad . I hope the owner sees this and really pays attention. So many of us locals would return if food were good. But we all stay away and go to taco trucks . Its your food Tres. We were seated for at least 10 minutes without a server..not even water offered. 2 other couples were seated and served chips and salsa and their drink orders taken. my wife and I waited to see if the server would even acknowledge us...never did. I recently moved back to Chico in 2023. Let me be honest. Tres Hombres isn't not what it used to taste like. The flavors aren't there anymore. Margaritas is the only thing worth coming for. The service has gone away no one really greats at the hostess stand waiting for table. Bar guy stares at you then grabs something then acknowledges the door. I would love quality service for what used to be a popular restaurant in the heart of downtown. Also, the next time you see mom walking through the door struggling you could be so kind grabbing the door instead of chatting it up. read more

We love the salsa and chips, the decor is so fun and welcoming, and the full bar drink selection is always the best. The menu has been updated in the past year or so and it is an improvement, even though some of our favorites may have gone bye bye. Fun place for family, friends, or dates. Our server (Maddy or Maggy) didn't even take our order , another server did, she only saw us to hand me my drink and my check and I left a $0 tip due to the bad service, only to find out she added a tip anyway. This was the best place we ate at in the city. We were recommended this place by the staff at the hotel we had stayed at and it did not disappoint. They have indoor and patio seating. The weather was nice so we sat outside. The service was friendly and prompt. We didn't wait too long for drinks and our food. We were recommended the avocado margarita, it sounds like it wouldn't taste good, but it was nice. The sopes and coconut prawns were very tasty. The carne asada tacos were my husbands favorite. Tres Hombres in Chico is a hard no from me. Super noisy, weird smell inside, and the salsa was slimy with a gross texture. The food tasted like it came from a can, definitely not authentic Mexican. Also worth noting, for a restaurant advertising itself as Mexican, the entire staff was white, which kind of explained the lack of authenticity in both the food and the overall atmosphere. read more

Pineapple margaritas was good. The chicken in the fajitas was dry and hard like jerky. The waiter failed to acknowledge who was paying the bill causing a family fight. He laughed it off, even after being told they'd loose a long time customer. I will never step in this place again. read more
