Even though the food is very average here, I'm giving this place a three mostly based on service. First of all, we were told over the phone that there'd be a table for our party of 8 at 8:30, but to try to come early. We ended up waiting 20 minutes for a table which can be a bit of a disappointment to begin. Finally we were seated, but outside, so we couldn't even enjoy the piano playing, which is what this place is famous for. And while the piano was played, it was accompanied by sub par vocals that we basically just raised our eyebrows at the whole meal but also f*cking loved, because the dude playing was just so spirited!!! And we LOVED our server Matt - he was attentive, helpful, and knew what the fuck was UPPPPP. Do you see how this review leaves me confused? Because there were some things I loved about this place, but other things I just didn't.
As for the drinks, Matt tooootally caught our drift, so when some of us requested less simple syrup in our drinks and spicy twists on cocktails, he was like sure, sure, sure, I've got you, of course. Also love that this place is stocked with Casamgios repesado tequila. Niiiiice. I got pretty drunk from my drinks (2, jic you were wondering, because Matt hooked me up - even referring to me as "Casamigos") and ended up enjoying the evening with my best friend. Also, V and Justin wanted Tito's soda with less soda more Tito's, and Matt made sure the bartender came through.
The food though, was just very average. My poke bowl was good! It just tasted like a very average poke bowl. But I did like that it included sushi rice rather than regular rice. I ordered the tuna add on, as suggested by Matt, and it was weird because I think this seared tuna was seared for too long. I want to taste seared tuna as if it's mostly raw, but just has a nice little crust. This tuna was thicker and not necessarily treated the way Gordon Ramsay would treat seared tuna.
The apps - bang bang shrimp - less bang more lettuce. They pack these babies up on top of a big bed of shredded stuff, so you think there is absolutely so much bang bang to be had, but really there isn't.
The calamari was good but I don't get the shaved Parmesan cheese thing. It's almost like they just assumed we'd be irked by the vocals of the piano player by this point and in need of something happy, like cheese. Cheese makes everyone happy, but it doesn't go with calamari. I liked the spicy mayo dip it came with though.
The Shishito peppers were undercooked. Nick got a few crunchies, and Sash got some spicies, even though Shishitos really aren't supposed to be spicy. I didn't even try the sauce it came with because I was basically discouraged by my table mates.
The wings were actually pretty good, but not many came on the plate and I got a fatty one which I hate - also mostly drumsticks instead of wings (Sasha calls them flats) and I'm less enthused about drumsticks mostly because of the fatty areas near the head that I'm not interested in noshing on.
So be it, this is the place for a fun night with friends but maybe not a gourmet, farm to table meal. On to Portland for that! read more
