Jonathan's is one of our absolutely favorite restaurants. We always dine at Jonathan's any time we're in Ogunquit. The food is always excellent -- fresh ingredients, well prepared, and beautifully presented. Every entree we've ever tried has been beyond satisfactory. This evening, three of us enjoyed the twin lobster special and one had seafood cache. All of it, including salads and sides, was excellent. Service at Jonathan's is always exceptional. We've always had servers who were pleasant and attentive. This evening was no exception. Despite the fact that the restaurant was very busy, our waiter, Carlos, took the time to greet us, chat with us, and answer all our questions. He made sure to check in with us throughout our meal and attended to all our needs. Carlos was a pleasure to meet and we appreciated his exceptional service. We never have had anything negative to say about Jonathan's. We love the place. And Jonathan was absolutely right about the blackberry ice cream!!! read more

Always have been curious about this spot and glad we finally tried it. We usually eat in town or back in Portsmouth when seeing a show at the Playhouse, but this time we gave Johnathons a go. First, this is a big restaurant, busy with several large rooms. They handle large crowds as we even saw buses in the parking lot. The host was gracious, we were quickly seated at a nice window table and had a pleasant waiter. Entrees are on the pricier side, but comparable to other spots in town. Everybody enjoyed their food. I particularly liked the very crispy fried calamari appetizer and the short ribs were tender and delicious and a very generous portion. The scallop appetizer was also very good, as was the pork chop entree. We told our waiter we were seeing a show and he kept things moving along for us. We were not rushed, but did not need to worry about not having enough time. The only disappointment, and we realized after we left, was that the 10% discount for dinner, advertised on our ticket was not applied. I know our waiter knew as he told us to enjoy the show as we were leaving. As sponsors of the theater, it seems wrong that you have to remember to show your ticket to receive the discount, especially when our waiter knew. This place was crazy crowded and we were lucky to find a place in the parking lot. We were on our way to the theatre down the street and made a reservation here. We should have made it for later, we had to rush out of there in order to make the show on time!! That said, we were all super happy with the service and the food received here. I ordered the steak and potatoes, which was cooked perfectly. I saved some steak for my dinner the next day at home and it was still really good. The bread served was strange, though, with some sort of blueberry infused butter. Definitely would come here again for dinner but will make earlier reservations sooner in order to make the show in a non-rushed manner!! read more

I don't know how Jonathan's has escaped my reviews for such a long time. I try to get to Ogunquit at least once/year and we only skipped dinner there once, and then only because we stayed the next town up. Jonathan's is elegant and subdued from the outside, but inside it's eclectic with lots of unusual artwork as well as beautiful gardens you can glimpse from the windows. There are at least three very comfortable dining rooms, a bar, and a function room upstairs where they host shows and entertainment. The service is always top notch, I have never had a cocktail or glass of wine that disappointed me, and I can always find a vegan or vegetarian option. My longstanding favorite is the eggplant napoleon, a MUST-TRY. This was the first time we stayed for a show at Jonathan's - the FABULOUS Paula Poundstone - and the function room was set up with long, narrow tables and dining chairs. There is an elevator to get upstairs if it's needed, but the staircase from the lobby is lovely and well-constructed. The room is cooled by very efficient ductless AC units, so it was comfortable there in mid-July. Everything is in top condition, looks brand new and is well maintained. What a wonderful surprise to find Jonathan's and have an outstanding meal there. The staff is amazing from the front of house to our server, Maritza. We had made reservations and were seated immediately upon entering the restaurant. When I made the reservation, I informed them that we would be celebrating my husband's birthday. When they seated us, they handed him a hand written birthday card! Such a wonderful and personal touch! We've eaten at some of the best restaurants around the world and had never experienced a personal touch like that before. The restaurant is beautiful with clean lines and was not over crowded with tables. We were not aware of anyone else's conversations because the tables were perfectly spaced apart from each other. The meal started with fresh rolls and brown bread with a delicous blueberry butter. We arrived early enough to take advantage of their "Buck a shuck" and ordered a dozen Atlantic oysters. They were small, but they were fresh and tasty! I was told later that their regular oysters (on the menu) are much bigger. My husband ordered the avocado/cucumber gazpacho and I ordered the calamari in a sweet chili sauce that was out of this world. Both were perfectly seasoned and allowed the main components of the dish to shine rather than cover or over power the taste of the fresh squid, avocado and cucumber. The meal was not rushed and we were able to enjoy our cocktails, the food and each other. Once we completed our first course, Maritza presented us with the most mouth watering, delicious, stuffed halibut (for me) and huge sea scallops for my husband which the chef cooked to perfection. Again, both dishes were seasoned so that the main components of the dish shined. My palate was a happy camper! If I had to critique anything it would be that the mashed potatoes were very dense. Delicious, but thick and dense. The mixed vegetables were perfectly seasoned. They were flavorful and complimented the fish and the scallops. The personal touches that the staff created for us were just unexpected and incredible. At the end of the meal Maritza and another server came to our table with a platter carrying a dish of chocolate mousse with "happy birthday" spelled out in chocolate and a lighted candle. They sang "happy birthday" and made the occasion that much more special. A wonderful evening. We plan to make it our summer pilgrimage when we drive up from New Hampshire and will go back again, and again because of the staff AND the amazing food. Total chef's kiss. read more

I have been to Jonathan's a few times to dine in the lounge for $1 oysters. They are offered from 4-6pm every day, even on weekends in the bar/lounge area. The staff is very nice and the restaurant will often have live performances. The $1 oysters are only able to be ordered by the dozen- but they are $20 cheaper from 4-6pm than during the rest of the day! I have tried other seafood appetizers and menu items and found them very good as well. The main menu items and drinks are on the pricier side, but it may be what is typical in the area. read more

We were a party of four with a 5:30 reservation. We were seated on time and everyone enjoyed their selections (meat and vegetarian dishes). Ronnie from Honduras was such a kind and accommodating server. We watched as he gently handled a few ' issues' with patience and a smile that was sincere. He checked in with us several times and seemed to be always in motion, taking care of all the little details of a very busy restaurant! What a gem he is! Another woman seemed to fill in any needs of other busy servers. The food and the drinks at Jonathan's are ALWAYS outstanding. My favorite dish is the pork schnitzel, but this time we had the twin lobsters. They also have buck a shuck oysters that always taste good with a crafted cocktail or chilled glass of wine. Our first night out in town and we picked a perfect place. There is a big fish tank which my son was obsessed with and just sat by looking quietly until dinner came out. If it were based just on the food, this review would probably be a 2/5. The food was pretty subpar, especially for the price. I got the Chicken Masala and it didn't have much flavor, the chicken was meh, and the noodles were overcooked. My mom got the scallops and she said they also didn't have much flavor. My dad liked the fish he got, so maybe we just picked the wrong menu items. I think they'd do better if they paired their menu down. The only reason this place is bumped up from a 2 to a 3 star review is because of the great service. Our server was friendly, funny and efficient, and our drinks and food came out in a timely manner. Our special holiday dinner out was less than special but I think it was more the fault of the waitress and my own high expectations. The holiday decorations were underwhelming but the piano playing was a nice touch. I returned my mocktail after one sip because it was too sweet. I should've asked them to re-pour it or ask that they take it off the bill - assumed the waitress would've done that automatically. The quality of the seafood was excellent and prepared well. New Englandy type restaurant. White tablecloths, sculpture and flower gardens adorn the outdoors -- all visible from the windows of the DR and provide a magnificent backdrop to your meal. They have handy stands for your purse at every table; a nice touch. Excellent haddock chowder! Another plus is that it is stone's throw away from the Ogunquit Theatre. We were one of the first cars in the parking lot at 6:25 PM and walked to the restaurant, avoiding the traffic in and out of the parking lot. Delicious food accompanied by Wonderful, attentive service from Darlene, surrounded by beautiful gardens that are even well lit and enjoyable after dark! I had Jonathan's house salad and the seafood chowder. The salad was crisp, fresh local veggies and perfect light citrus vinaigrette. The seafood chowder was very good, hubby enjoyed the wedge salad with French onion soup served in traditional croque, warm French bread and butter was perfect accompaniment. My mom had the roasted artichoke appetizer and the eggplant napoleon and we both loved the light and crispy eggplant! Finished it all off with the warm blueberry tart Ala mode! Service was excellent, almost too efficient as we were done with our meal in less than an hour. The stuffed haddock was very good. The salmon was good not great. It was slightly overcooked. The seafood cache was just ok. My youngest daughter had a Caesar salad with chicken that was $28.50. It was overpriced for what you got. We attended a concert upstairs at Jonathan's the other night in their intimate venue. Each ticket included a partial meal credit so we were able to enjoy dinner before the show. We shared a delicious seafood chowder and cod cakes - two New England classics. My partner really enjoyed her Eggplant Napoleon and I mowed through a pile of Mussels Provençal. Absolutely delicious! The restaurant has amazing framed drawings on the walls, as well as neat older artifacts. It's a really homey atmosphere. The staff was helpful and generous, while also not being pushy. This is a super spot, owned by this family for decades! read more

My wife and I have enjoyed several fine meals at Jonathan's over the years, but I have never posted a review. I think the time has come to correct that oversight. It was raining quite hard when we arrived the other night, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the staff had placed small coat stands next to each table so diners didn't have to deal with wet coats and umbrellas. The wine list and the menu both offered extensive choices. The service was professional in every sense. Our entrees were accompanied by a basket of fresh rolls and blueberry butter. At one time that would have been taken for granted. Sadly, nice touches like that have all but gone away in today's cost-conscious restaurant environment. My wife could not find enough good things to say about her chicken piccata, and my braised short ribs were fantastic. The crème brulee was decadent. I want to add my personal thanks to everyone on the staff. Jonathan's is one of those unique places that contributes to making Ogunquit such a special place to visit. read more

Location is lovely, service was good, restaurant has an interesting non food smell. Pro tip: swordfish piccata and seafood pasta is delish. I was at Jonathan's to see Paula Poundstone, it was my first time attending an event there. We were a little bit early for the show and thought to head into the bar section for some food as recommended by the host but after waiting at a bar table for 15 minutes with no connection to a server, we bailed. We headed up to the event space. Our tickets came with one cocktail or dessert and coffee which was a nice perk! Between the two of us we ordered a tequila sunrise and a red velvet cake and coffee. We were seated side by side with a table between us, which really worked out! We were seated toward the back, which I was a little worried about, but once Paula walked in and up onto the platform, it was ALL just fine. We had a local recommend this restaurant and we were not disappointed. We go back to Maine almost every year and have yet to be disappointed! It's casual dress, but elegant food. We have shared a date night a few times and felt very comfortable bringing our kids at other times. All of the food is fresh and the stuffed lobster is ridiculously amazing! Ambiance - very nice. Bar service was ok, bar was very busy when we checked in but were able to get a drink at the bar that we brought to our table. Food, very much below average to practically not eatable. Order mussels which we were very much looking forward to, but very disappointed. The mussels were served in a very deep caldron which made it very difficult to get to the broth, which there was not enough of. The mussel appetizer was delivered very promptly to the table which means they were prepared well ahead of time, and thusly caused the mussels to be over cooked. Overall this appetizer was nothing special and fell short. My main meal, Grilled Lobster over linguine was terrible. The pasta has no flavoring whatsoever and the lobster was so overcooked that I left the entire plate. Our waiter never checked or asked how our meal was and was not very engaging at all. It's packed inside. They have a cool fish tank to look at while waiting for the food which is good because the food took forever to come out. We sat down at 6:30 and didn't leave until 8:15. At first we were seated in a full dining room which was a bit too loud for my friends and I so we were able to sit in a much quieter room with a very nice server named Edith. Beginning to end special request, careful timing between courses everything was done perfectly. My next experience at Jonathan's will be better planned...I would like to go to the entertainment after dinner in the future they had a lot of good bookings for this year. My friend started out with a lemon drop martini and she loved it and another friend had a simple screwdriver. (he's a bit old-fashioned lol) On a special menu they had Newfoundland pea soup it was outstanding not too thick or salty and it had nice tender pieces of ham and some other tasty ingredients... best pea soup ever. Next was appetizer of pan seared scallops with the greens that was unbelievably good... every last drop I ate!! I have to tell you about nice slices of little brown bread and the delicious flavored butter...wow...the bread was an experience that brought fond memories of my family's good times. Being raised in New England and having fun together with great food and good people. One friend had salmon and the other baked scallops everybody was happy beginning to end...definitely will be returning. read more

When here Sunday for buck-a-shuck happy hour 4-6pm. Great oysters, atmosphere and cocktails! Had three dozen and could have eaten more, so briny & sweet. Went back on Monday for dinner, but had another dozen before sitting down for dinner. My wife had the lobster bisque and I had the French onion soup, both were very good. Then we split an entree, the sautéed halibut. Wow, it was just fantastic. Perfect way to end our day. Can't wait to come again. The food , service and welcoming environment were first rate.
