Overall opinion: Mostly an overpriced disappointing menu in a nice convenient space. My first visit before a show at the Ogunquit Playhouse, very convenient with good parking and multiple nice dining areas. My first time eating in Ogunquit too, coming from Kennebunk. Jonathan's had a special Newfoundland-themed menu for the Playhouse's "Come from Away" musical besides its standing menu. Great idea!!! I'm Franco-Americaine so Quebecois versions of these dishes are familiar. Newfoundland pea soup starter was quite good, but $12 for a single cup of mostly yellow split pea & root veg purée with a small square of corned beef. Cod au gratin had ~8 ounces of nicely cooked cod in a bechamel, but no detectable mustard or cheese topping. Overly forward with tarragon, would have preferred thyme or savory. Grilled lemon was nice. Menu-standard julienne veg was mushy. Mashed potatoes were OK. $42.50? Service was OK, not particularly attentive in a fairly empty room, but solos often encounter this experience. read more

Once again, Jonathan's offered my husband and me a wonderful meal to end our lovely day in Ogunquit. Immediately upon our entering the eating area, we were greeted by Edith. How wonderful to see her again! As always, her warmth and genuine desire to see to our needs reminded us why we return again and again to Jonathan's. As I have a lot of dietary restrictions, she carefully makes sure that my food meets my requirements. It makes the dining experience enjoyable and stress free. Of course, I want to thank the people who prepare the meals. Keshan made our salad, carefully keeping in mind my diet. The salad was aesthetically pleasing and tasted light and fresh. Jonathan's is a huge restaurant that also has music acts and comedy shows. Our first time here and first time for Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant. Reservations for three people at 3:00 and we were seated promptly. Our waitresses were a duo Sue and Darlene. They were quick and friendly. We started with cranberry margaritas that were tasty. We ordered two traditional turkey dinners and a pork tenderloin dinner along with butternut squash soup and a Jonathan's house salad. We finished with pecan pie and apple pie. Dinners came with cranberry chutney, mashed potatoes, mashed butternut squash, stuffing, and peas with pearl onions. Everything was delicious, even the peas and pearl onions. While we ate dinner, fish in the huge aquarium next to our table was amusing and fun to watch. read more

This was my second visit to Jonathon's, and even better this visit than last! Our waitress, Edith, went above and beyond for our service. She was very attentive, cheerful, volunteered to take our picture, and made sure we had everything we needed the entire time. She even tied our lobster bibs for us!! The food was absolutely Devine. The baked lobster and the surf and turf dinners were one of the best I have ever had. The steak was cooked to perfection; cut like butter. This is the best 'go to' place for varied GF dining in Ogunquit in my view, starting with GF rolls. Went on a Tuesday night. Service can slip a bit as everyone hurries out at once to see a show at the Ogunquit playhouse around 715-730. Highly recommend for an intimate dinner. With a couple of drinks, easily can run toward $200 for a couple with tip, but worth it. read more

We had THE BEST experience with Luigi and Ulises. We rolled in with two young children. They instinctually knew to bring bread and their food QUICKLY. Best service for families. My dad said his steak was the best he's ever had. I wrote on the Resy reservation that it was a birthday since it prompts if a special occasion. I had no expectations. They wrote my mom a wonderfully thoughtful HBD card AND brought her a delicious cheesecake (so good) slice with a candle. The ambiance is so old school and rustic. Best dining experience. We had a very disappointing Easter Brunch. They advertised smoked salmon, and it was nowhere to be found. The fillet mignon was cold. There was no carving station...it was ham and lamb sliced in the kitchen and put in a buffet warmer thingy and was dried out. In fact, most of the food had been out a while and was dry. There was a complete lack of side dishes. The desserts were pretty nonexistent. The danishes were the best thing. The shrimp and oysters were good. The omelette station was the only part of the buffet that had a cook. I was so surprised brunch was such poor quality with little planning and attentiveness as dinner here has been wonderful. My family and I went for the Mother's Day brunch . The food was average, not particularly special but not bad. The mediocrity of the food did not warrant the very high price. Given the total bill I would have expected a higher level of quality. Our waitress was pleasant but seemed distant and uninterested in the value of our experience. Nice place, service and atmosphere. We had lobster bisque and oatmilk corn chowder for appetizers and these were really good. I had the Jaeger schnitzel and my partner had the stuffed haddock. Both of these came surprisingly fast, neither where very hot, let alone warm and both felt like they were ready-cooked and reheated. The schnitzel was too large a portion with very thin meat and a lot of breading and really just not much taste. And dry. Furthermore, for the reputation and setting of fine dining the presentation of the drinks was not as expected. A plus side was that the mashed potatoes we both had where great- but I don't really want to pay $ 30 for just mashed potatoes. All in all, over priced for the quality and the taste. Had a wonderful evening starting with the excellent service, attentive and refilling my glass of water as often as possible. We began with a delicious jumbo shrimp cocktail and a basket of bread. The shrimp tasted fresh and delicious. Following was the meal which I ordered the Seafood Stuffed North Atlantic Haddock. Now, the stuffing is placed gently on top of a large piece of haddock which is cooked to perfection. I opted away from the veggies due to an allergy and asked for a little extra potato mashed. The meal was delicious and one I recommend. Enough room was left for desert and I opted for the dark chocolate mousse which too was delicious. Plenty of food and very delicious. Service was fantastic. Ambience was perfect with a window seat overlooking the garden. This was a wonderful way to spend for Easter 2022 dinner. read more

I stopped by the bar for some raw oysters ($1 an oyster during this particular happy-hour) and a drink. The oysters were tasty however they were also pretty mangled (poorly shucked). The neat vodka martini was a generous size even if it came ungarnished (quickly resolved when I mentioned it). The bartender and off-duty server who was also enjoying a martini (espresso I believe) were very polite and friendly. Overall not a bad snack for under $20. Update: I went back for diner and I'm glad I did! The complimentary bread was served with a homemade blueberry butter that I was tempted to eat with a spoon! My meal actually started off with the Bacon Blue Cheese Mussels - I've never seen mussels prepared this way but they sounded too good to pass up. Local Bang Island mussels (Casco Bay, Maine) come is a pot with not only traditional white wine but also onions, cream and bacon. The ingredients mix so well together giving the broth and mussels a smokey flavor. I couldn't identify the blue cheese flavor specifically but this is a dish you cannot pass up! The lobster bisque, was velvety smooth and rich with flavor. The sherry was noticeable but not over powering and the portion size was large but not a drop was left over. A very rich and flavorful bowlful. By the time my main dish arrived my expectations should have been high, but I was still subconsciously hesitant to have high hopes. The Maine Seafood Pasta was another home run! The description lists lobster tail, shrimp and clam however I received not only the tail but two perfectly cooked full claws meat portions as well. Four shrimp and four clams round out the protein allotment on top of a bed of perfectly cooked linguini in a garlic butter sauce that's topped with tomato chunks and Romano cheese. Put it this way...I practically licked the bowl clean. Even though I was pretty full, I couldn't resist dessert. The chocolate mouse was very rich and the apple crisp upon arrival smelled of cinnamon and when tasted was simply awesome. The only criticism I'd have was the top crumb layer was a bit thick in relation to the filling but I'd sure as hell order it again! Btw - breakfast was good too. read more

3.5 stars for a pleasant dinner on a rainy night in Ogunquit. Seated in a quiet dining room off the main large room, the energy was a bit lacking although the flower garden outside the window was beautiful. Service was generally attentive, but not a lot of effort and with prompts needed for more water, more bread (which never arrived, but no big deal), and we were never asked if we would like another drink. Food was above average, with oysters to start, which are almost always good. For entrees on this chilly and rainy late summer night, we had shepherd's pie, which got good reviews across the table for its heartiness. I had the caramelized grilled salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The salmon was cooked properly and was tasty, but could have used even more caramelization. For dessert, the apple crisp a la mode was mediocre; the crust was much too thick and dry and there wasn't enough apple filling underneath. Overall, Jonathan's is a nice place but feels a bit flat, with dated decor and low energy. Service at this price point should be improved and more attentive to details and to at least acknowledge that there was a birthday at the table (which was mentioned in the OpenTable reservation). read more

We came for dinner the other night. We love farm to table places with seasonal menus; they had a kids menu...checked all the boxes for a meal with the family while away. We arrived at 6pm for our reservation. We were seated in a room that had 3 large parties ( greater than 6 people). Our server took our orders and then we never saw them again at our table. They were attending to the larger parties and we never saw them again. An hour and a half passed and our meal never came...I happened to catch the server as they walked by after helping one of the bigger parties to ask about our meals...and again they never came back! We ended up telling the gentleman refreshing our water what happened and he went into the kitchen to inquire about our meals; he came back out and shared that our food still was not in the queue...and the best the restaurant could do is offer us our meal for half off. This was not his fault, and I was floored that he was the only person responding to the situation and that was the solution! It was now past 730, our very patient 5 year old needed to eat and go to bed...so we left. Gracefully. While I was helping my daughter into the car, my husband tried to speak with the manager but they would not come out. I have never left a restaurant in my life due to poor service. I have always given poor service/servers the benefit of The doubt as I know how it feels to be weeds having worked in the service industry.....but this was an awful experience. Not impressed. Came for private lunch before a play and was utterly displeased. Lobster rolls had little to no lobster on a cold stale hot dog roll. Chowder had chunks of raw onions in it and salad was just ok. Seems like they just threw things together on the fly. Refused to allow us to purchase ice cream as we weren't given an option of desserts. Only placed a slice of carrot cake on the table. And, who charges $15 for half a glass of Chardonnay??? Staff appeared to be bothered when asked a question and some were unresponsive altogether. Will not be back anytime soon. read more

Food average or below, service, if I could give it a 1/2 star I would. We came for a quick bite before the show and stated that. We did not buy their upgrade ticket, which would have given us a "free drink or dessert and a better seat or $25 toward our dinner". We had 4 appetizers which were not cheap. The only person who was attentive was the person refilling our water, We asked for more bread to go with out mussels, we never got it, we never got a spoon to share our mussels, we never got salt or pepper, we were never checked back on. We had to track down the waitress to get our check an hour later. It was NOT that busy there. Our waitress NEVER thanked us. Save your money and eat somewhere where they are not so entitled. As a frequent visitors to Ogunquit we've always wanted to try Jonathan's, We came up for Christmas by the sea & decided to finally give it a try. Meh. I had made a reservation but our table was not ready when we got there so we went to the bar for a drink while we waited. Pros: The food was pretty good. The blueberry butter was amazing. The saxophonists in the lounge was amazing and even came over and did Happy Birthday (it was my birthday) at our table. The place was super busy so clearly most people seem so love it. Cons: while waiting in the bar (where we were instructed to wait, we continued to check on our table and were repeatedly told it would only be a moment longer. Finally my boyfriend went up and spoke to someone who admitted that they'd forgotten about us. The bartender did not appear to enjoy her job and was not interested in small talk or joking around, our two servers seemed tired and bored despite how busy it was. I just didn't get a warm vibe.
