As a frequent visitors to Ogunquit we've always wanted to try Jonathan's, We came up for Christmas by the sea & decided to finally give it a try. Meh. I had made a reservation but our table was not ready when we got there so we went to the bar for a drink while we waited. Pros: The food was pretty good. The blueberry butter was amazing. The saxophonists in the lounge was amazing and even came over and did Happy Birthday (it was my birthday) at our table. The place was super busy so clearly most people seem so love it. Cons: while waiting in the bar (where we were instructed to wait, we continued to check on our table and were repeatedly told it would only be a moment longer. Finally my boyfriend went up and spoke to someone who admitted that they'd forgotten about us. The bartender did not appear to enjoy her job and was not interested in small talk or joking around, our two servers seemed tired and bored despite how busy it was. I just didn't get a warm vibe. Maybe it was an off night. Who knows. read more

If I can give it zero stars I would. I had reservations at 6:45 for 5 people. We arrived on time and the restaurant told us they had us down for 4 people but it would be no problem. They told us to wait 10 minutes. We waited the 10 minutes and then they told us another 10 minutes. Mind you my elderly grandparents are standing waiting and they did not even offer them a chair. They then approached us and said they would not be able to seat us that night. This is extremely unprofessional and they should be ashamed of themselves, not only for not keeping their reservations but for there treatment of elderly patrons. I will never come back here and would not recommend this place to anyone. On the positive side we left Johnathans after there terrible service and went to the Rivers Landing which was fantastic. read more

I have eaten at Johnatha's before, and have been to may shows, before my last dinner there. It was a Thanksgiving Dinner special with a limited menu (which is understandable), and an almost full house when I arrived for my reservation. I made the reservation on-line, and was certain I made it for 7:00 pm but was told that it was for 5:30 and that it was cancelled. I showed the hostess my 7:00pm confirmation, and she said that they should have an open table for me shortly. So far, so good. I was promptly brought to my table and seated. Shortly thereafter, my server came to me and asked if I wanted to start with something to drink. My companion ordered quickly. I was unsure and said "I am not sure." Our server said "okay" and turned and walked away. She came back a few minutes later with my companion's drink, and I ordered mine at this time. Now I understand that this server was serving the entire room we were in, and I could see she was busy. She did have a busser working with her, and I saw the owner helping out as well. It looked like a good team. After 10 minutes my server brought my beverage. I was ready to order and the server was great at remembering the list we gave her. At this time I was watching her talking and laughing with other tables. She was engaged and playful. Okay here is where the wheels come off the wagon. I noticed two tables getting their orders before my table, even though we had placed our order before they did. These tables were on my left and my right so I could not miss this action. The server continued to walk past my table and did not check to see if I needed more water (the glasses were empty), or to take away the used appetizer plates. Then I saw the busser come out with a water pitcher and start filling glasses. He filled the glasses at the table to my right and to my left, walking past my empty glass twice. I know it is only water, and it may sound trivial to some, but it is important to keep those glasses full. A few minutes later, the busser brought our food (and I had to ask him for water). I will say that the steak I had was wonderfully cooked, and had a decent, smokey flavor. The overall presentation on the plate was haphazard. Jonathan's padded the plate with traditional Thanksgiving fare; mashed potatoes, squash, stuffing, and cranberry sauce (from a can). In my opinion, this dish was not worth the $46.00 I paid for it. Directly after my dinner was served, my server walked by, without stopping, and asked if everything was okay. I had not taken a bite yet. This was also the first time she stopped at my table since taking my order, all-the-while mingling with the other tables. The dinner begins to be eaten, and once again I am out of water, and my other drink glass was empty as well. I needed to stop the busser and ask him for more water please, and if her could get me a refill on my other drink. He said he would tell my server. The refill never arrived. When I finished eating, I did the tradition placing of the knife and fork upon the plate, signaling I was finished. The server passed my table twice without speaking to me, and the busser went by once empty handed and did not stop. After a few more minutes, the busser came around and cleared the table. He spoke very little to me while he was there, even after I tried to engage him in a small-talk conversation. At this time the server came to my table and asked about dessert. My order was taken and away she went; no words spoke again. Just a quick turn and a walk away. Dessert was finished and the coffee drank. The busser walked by my table again empty handed and did not take the dessert dishes. He went two more tables down, looked back, and returned to take our dishes. Finally, the server comes with the tab. She hands me the paper, and I ask if I can just give her my card. She instructed me to put it on the table and she would return for it. About 15 minutes later the busser sees the card and decided to take it to process for me. The server returns with the card machine, my card, and says I need to insert my card and sign. She did not apologize for the busser making a mistake, just in a matter-of-fact way said insert your card. Overall, I will say this about Jonathan's; The owner was fantastic to watch him helping his staff. The hostess was great for overlooking the scheduling error and seating me. The busser, in my opinion, was cold and inattentive to my table, all the while doing his job at other tables. The server. Yes, the server. She was, again in my opinion, cold, rude, unpersonal, and acted like she did not want me there, and that she was trying to shun me. All-the-while attending others in a manner that a decent server should. I was disappointed with the service in the dining room, and would give it a 4 out of 10. The icing on this cake was the fact that the lowest amount I could tip was 20% when the service was at a 10% level. read more

We did not buy their upgrade ticket, which would have given us a "free drink or dessert and a better seat or $25 toward our dinner". We had 4 appetizers which were not cheap. The only person who was attentive was the person refilling our water, We asked for more bread to go with out mussels, we never got it, we never got a spoon to share our mussels, we never got salt or pepper, we were never checked back on. We had to track down the waitress to get our check an hour later. It was NOT that busy there. Our waitress NEVER thanked us. Save your money and eat somewhere where they are not so entitled. Have been to Jonathan's many times. Tonight as usual went to get the twin lobster special just saw it on the the trolley. Well the server informed us oh no that's old we don't have that anymore. Only options baked stuffed or poached but strange the table next was told there was a boiled lobster really didn't tell us that. Told the manger all I go was an apology. Edith provided excellent service. Food was straight forward and decent. Baked scallops and swapped mashed potatoes for linguine and created my own baked scallops over linguine dish. Fresh julienne vegetables as a side were good. Vegetarian mushroom pasta dish was a tasty change from the usual vegetarian offering of Mac and cheese. Avocado gazpacho was different- surprisingly sweet with strong apple flavor. Overall, a nice change from the usual fried seafood or subpar burger places. Quiet adult oriented atmosphere. read more

Jonathan's is steps from the Ogunquit Playhouse and we worked ahead to book some pre-theater dining with them; they recommended a reservation two hours before curtain and the timing ended up perfect. It happened to be raining as we arrived, and our table had a beautiful view of a summer garden in full bloom as the showers fell. The amazing thing about the restaurant is it feels like you're dining throughout in a private home. Service was solid and attentive (even during a peak time--from what we could see, the dining rooms were hopping), and provided some great recommendations from cocktails to dessert for the table (blueberry crumble a la mode). I think it's got to be an especially rough time to be a server right now, so I was super thankful that we felt so taken care of by the team and could make it good for them, too. Did have to call to make the reservation, though--a booking plugin on the website would be hugely helpful to secure that table when you're trying to be good and set your plans in advance. First visit to Jonathan's on Saturday 9/25. Very nice place. We started out with a dozen oysters & baked artichokes. The oysters were tasty, nice and briny. But they were very small, I don't think I've ever had such small oysters which leads me to think $3.50 each was a little steep. We all enjoyed the Baked Artichokes, I'd prefer it with the sour cream on top. We got 4 entrées, ME seafood pasta. Shrimp scampi, seafarers cache and Steak Diane. The meals all came out hot, except the mash potatoes on the Steak Diane. Everyone enjoyed their meals very much. Service wasn't great, don't blame covid. We waited approximately 10 minutes before a server came to our table. A table of 6 seated about 10 minutes after us was enjoying salads before we even got to order. No one came back to check on us after receiving our order. We weren't asked if we wanted coffee or dessert which we didn't but should be asked. The prices are steep at Jonathan's, 3 cocktails , 2 apps & 4 meals $ 351 is a bit much, it would be easier to accept if the service was a little more attentive. read more

What can I say about this place? I mean, I loved it. The food? Standard Maine tourist town fare, well cooked and yummy, but nothing special to be sure. The atmosphere? Old school, house turned restaurant vibes, which I love. The service? Phenomenal. The wait staff were super attentive, and helped make this meal more special than it would normally have been. So, time to set the scene... picture me, Saturday before Mother's Day, trying to make a reservation for Mother's Day dinner somewhere in Portland. Yeah, I thought I could do it. Hard no. So scramble to find something, anything. And found this gem, albeit they only had a 445 seating left, good enough. Reviews look decent, food looks good, prices aren't bad, why not? So, we arrive at 430, and it was like a trip to the twilight zone. We were the youngest people there by a solid 20 years.... but it was one of the coolest dining experiences ever. It felt like we were teleported into Dirty Dancing! I was waiting for Johnny and Baby to come out and dance for us, and I can't tell you how many times I annoyed my wife by saying 'nobody puts baby in a corner' referencing our daughter. It was surreal, and amazing. For the food, the shining star was the bread pudding. Holy hell was it tasty. My lamb chops were good, as was my wife's fish, but the dessert was the game changer. So, head on down, try the food, but let the environment envelope you. And if you have time, rewatch Dirty Dancing before you go. Total time warp. read more

Jonathan's under the owner Jonathan West continues to be one of those steady restaurants you can come to rely on in the Ogunquit area. I specify the owner, because if you were there and did not like it during its brief time during which it changed ownership and then went back to Mr. West - you need to come and try it under his ownership - it is the classic Jonathan's we all come to love. The menu offerings are consistent and offer common, approachable food that all will like. You will find both locals and tourists alike at this restaurant. It can be for every day dining or for a special occasion. With live entertainment onsite both in the restaurant and ticketed entertainment upstairs there is also an upbeat vibe that makes this a fun place to go. Overall, I would comment that this is not what you would think of as your contemporary modern decor / modern menu, but it is tried and true simple good dishes that keep people coming back. The wait staff and bar staff at times are not overly friendly and are a little focused on the task at hand during the most recent visit - trying to give a little bit of latitude in case they are ramping back up with staff. What was good, however, is that they truly took service as a team sport and everyone was pitching in. It just created a little disconnect on the service being managed by different people throughout the process. Many of the tables with kids were seated near the huge fix tank which kept them occupied watching all the aquatic life. One of my favorite dishes of the night -- the homemade Apple Crisp -- don't miss out if you like a fresh baked apple crisp with Vanilla ice cream. So delicious! The Boursin stuffed mushrooms are a nice appetizer to share. The salads are always fresh. On this visit, we got a special Greek salad that the staff were nice enough to split onto two plates so we could share. The Maine Seafood Pasta was filled with clams, shrimp, and lobster. The baked scallops were just a bit more chewy than I would expect from fresh scallops leading me to think they were frozen or way overcooked and was a little disappointing given the proximity to fresh seafood. Overall a good experience. The service wasn't as good as I expected. We had three different waiters bc the first two said they couldn't answer the questions that we had about the menu and bar options...we waited a long time for our food and seemed to be forgotten in the corner.. But when the food came my husband loved his filet and his drinks. I ordered the steak tips medium and they came closer to well done but still had good flavor. The fries were yummy and I liked the seasoning on the tips and fries. The apple crisp dessert was amazing! We also tried to mousse which was awesome but far too rich to finish the portion size we were given. Our first time to this restaurant was absolutely amazing. Larry greeted us and honored an expired coupon for buy one entree get one free. The staff was friendly and quick upon arrival. I ordered the elderberry martini, their signature drink which was one point. The blueberry butter from their local farm to go with a nice selection of bread was a great complimentary starter. For dinner, I ordered the seafood pasta that came with fresh tomatoes, a great selection of clams and lobster over linguine and tossed in a nice sauce. Alsways have good food and drinks here, great service and very nice atmosphere. Attended a show after and because we were delayed in seating , others were sitting on our table. Unfortunately it was the same locals as anothe time who were drunk and interrupted the show by dancing around and in front of us. Best part is they stumbled out to get into their cars and drive away. Might want to monitor your guests. We always arrange a ride and not doing so outs others and the restaurant at risk. read more

Hoping to have a craving for oysters satisfied by the buck a shuck special, I was sadly mistaken. We arrived about 4 pm to a hard to find dimly lit lounge area that is entirely too small to accommodate any crowd. Perhaps there are 10 seats at the bar and 4 tables. They have a bar menu, but we never received, they just assumed we were there for the oysters (not wrong). The gentleman beside me shared his menu and was quick to point out all the typos. I ordered a dz oysters and my wife got the stuffed mushrooms. The oysters are very very small but were good. However, a dz wouldn't satisfy anyone who went seeking oysters. My wife enjoyed the mushrooms, but for the life of me I don't know how. We both agreed that "stuffed mushrooms" is very vet misleading for anyone who thinks of stuffed mushroom as traditional breadcrumb or seafood stuffed. They resemble stuffed mushrooms with a whipped potato topping when presented but taste like mushroom Rangoon dip - the white topping is cream cheesish. I've never had a creamed cheese filled mushroom, quite nasty in my opinion, but my wife loves mushrooms and cream cheese ( individually ) so she was ok with them. I ordered a second dz of the oysters, but after waiting 20 minutes it was apparent the order hadn't been put in. Service was off because on top of that the couple behind returned chowder because it was cold. Ultimately, I was very happy that the second order hadn't been put in when I got the bill. Three glasses of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay $46!!! That comes out to more than the price of a bottle per glass. I must have audibly gruffed because it sparked a conversation with the gentleman beside me who said their prices are avg, but when I told him the price, he took back his statement and agreed that it was entirely over priced. There was 0 redeemable about this dimly lit dive lounge in the middle of a beautiful town. Don't be fooled by the buck a shuck they make up for the price with everything else. Very worthwhile to spend 3 (or less) for an oyster elsewhere. read more

My wife and I ate here many years ago , when we arrived in Ogunquit we definitely wanted to go back to Johnathan's . The room has changed a bit since the early 2000's , but the big fish tank is still in the same spot . We were seated promptly after arriving and my wife ordered the signature drink elderberry martini . I ordered a Cabernet. My wife's drink was very tasty , as was my wine . Our server , Paul , was extremely attentive and very nice and extremely professional. He's actually known as Paul the Butler from his previous occupation. I ordered clam chowder-soup . It was thick and delicious. I then ordered the rib eye steak which was delicious , accompanied by smashed potatoes and asparagus. Just excellent. My wife had the chicken piccata and liked it very much . The steak was cooked to perfection. My advice, order a steak if you come here . My wife had the apple crisp cake with vanilla ice cream for desert. Definitely extremely delicious. The atmosphere here is really great and the food is very good to great , depending on what you order. The staff are all extremely nice professional people , Paul our waiter was just fantastic. The bar/lounge was crowded with a 2 piece band playing an acoustic set of songs . A fantastic experience and can't wait to come here again. read more

Back again for another Bob Marley show, but this review is for the restaurant, cause Uncle Bobby was wicked awesome as usual. Went a little on the early side for dinner...4 pm, mostly because I didn't make the dinner reservation when I bought the tickets like it said in plain sight. Haha. Anyways, quickly seated when we arrived. I started with a cup of Clam Chowdah. Cup... That's one BIG cup! Haha. And it was Wicked GoooooD! She ordered the Poached Lobster Dinner and I had the Mediterranean Pasta. Both of us enjoyed our dinners. Only "complaint" for me was...it mentioned this was a spicy sausage....well the spice got left out. Still was great, but could have been kicked up a few notches. Service was excellent this time. Look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu...and maybe some more comedy? HA! All COVID-19 precautions are being used by the staff, masks are required inside the building, except when seated. Many hand sanitizer locations around the building. Parking is still Boston like. We had the afeter party for our wedding at Jonathan's in April, and they were so accomopdating of our needs! Max was very helpful in the planning process and was able to advise me on things I was unsure of- from timing to food and beyond! He also worked with the chef to ensure that our guests with deitary restirctions would each have some snack options at the after party. The location was super convenient as well, as most of our guests were staying at the Meadowmere and the Admirals Inn- both super walkable! We are so grateful for everything! Is the food good? Sure. Is the place special? Meh. Is it weird to have a hidden saxophonist and piano player jazzin out kinda loudly on a not so busy evening? Kinda. I got the prime rib with shrimp and a side mashed potatoes. My prime rib was cooked to medium when I asked for medium rare. Was still good but when you cover something in butter and garlic, it's gonna be good. Shrimp were the same. Enjoyed my rum punch thing and chocolate mousse. read more
