Last night, I saw a family birthday party decend into pure chaos when I witnessed a family celebration where the attendees may have had too much to drink, ruin the dinners of the families in the adjoining room. The waitstaff was notified at least 4 times the party had become unruly and rude to others. When they threatened to throw a chair through a false window, one of the patrons had to stand up to the entire party to quiet down and to control their children. I watched the man from the table next to us walk into that room to ask them to please keep it civil and orderly and that comments of threats wont be tolerated. Zero help from waitstaff and this wasn't 10 minutes, this was a sustained 30 minutes of uncomfortably putting up with this family's rude behavior toward the other patrons. First time at the restaurant for me, and the others around us, as we discussed since we bonded over our horrible experience. The restaurant could have controlled this mess if they would have acted quick enough to the complaints. I left what was left of my meal on the table. I'll never return. If I could give lower than a star, I'd do it. Nothing in my rating is untrue and is a reflection of what I saw with my own eyes. read more

We were so looking forward to dining and seeing a show-expecting an "experience" ! The food was so disappointing, and very overpriced. I had the stuffed haddock- ...I am pretty sure the mashed potatoes were instant, the fish was just okay. Given the prices, our expectations were high and they didn't deliver. We scanned the room, everyone had been served bread, we had to ask for bread and then the meal was served- having said that, the service was marginal. We could have gone to the olive garden or the 99 and had better food at a third of the price. As for the show, the seating is very uncomfortable, packing in as many people as they possibly can. The seating chart appears spacious, and it is not. I wonder if "code" would be in question -- If you are looking for a good experience for dinner and a show, don't go to Jonathans, go the Jazz club in Portsmouth. read more

Breakfast was sad. Had to request coffee refill as table next to me got one. Asked for cheddar in my scramble eggs and they forgot. Eggs returned from kitchen with cold/unmelted shreds. Want New England pancakes with real syrup? Nope. Corn syrup flavored maple in a plastic package. Ask for the advertised organic 12 grain bread? They don't have it. Sub wheat bread , they give you an English muffin. All breads are from plastic bags, nothing baked on premises or local. A $20 bfast with coffee was barely as good as what you can get from a diner for 8.99. Skip this place for breakfast. read more

I was so excited to come here for my Mother's Day brunch...... the excitement ended at raw chicken. Came here with two small children and two adults. We made a reservation ahead of time as suggested by the hotel we were staying at. When checking in with the host he seemed flustered and upset, being Mother's Day that was most certainly understandable. I know it's one of the busiest days to eat out. Upon being seated it took our server a long time to come over and take our order. We ordered two children's chicken fingers and fries, a raw bar specialty, and the lobster eggs Benedict. It took 45 minutes for the food to arrive and the children's chicken fingers were completely raw in the middle. There was no apology, just the plates being whisked away with the promise of new meals. My oysters were not accompanied by a mignonette and were just okay, the lobster Benedict was cold upon arrival. The kids meals did not show up until WELL after the adults finished their meals. Anyone with small children will understand the difficulty of that situation. Again, there was no apology and the whole situation was handled very poorly. It's beautiful from the outside and immense on the inside. We strolled for our reservations at 7:30 and they might have mentioned that they closed at 8. In their defense, we didn't feel rushed but it was bizarre to be the only people left in this huge ass room while the waitstaff re-set the 50 tables for the next night's dinner. ANYHOW. The food was ok--not great, but good. A solid B-. I would have given it a higher rating if the entrees were in the 15-20 dollar range, but at 30-45, it was average at best. This place is amazing. Hostess was welcoming and sat us immediately with a reservation. Joel was our server and he was amazing. Drinks were on time and on point. Oysters OMG....shucked perfectly, fresh, and briny. The meal was amazing Hubby had the special poached lobster and I had the Scallops. Everything came out steaming hot and the food was cooked to perfection. Of course we had to try the chocolate mousse and it didn't disappoint. This is a keeper for us and we will be back soon. I cannot say enough about this fine establishment. We were in Ogunquit, and did not do a very good job planning for dinner. Before we knew it, it was after 8 o'clock. We happened to drive by Jonathan's, and inside, were promptly greeted by the owner himself. We were hesitant about sitting down so close to their closing time as some restaurants use closing time as an excuse to either rush customers or provide inferior service. There was none of that at Jonathan's. While we were led to our table, we were greeted with a "welcome to Jonathan's" from the servers. No surly faces or eye rolls for coming in close to closing. We opted for the punch to drink, which was absolutely perfect. We were presented with a basket of freshly baked bread and blueberry butter, which was out of this world. Lobster bisque was amazing. I selected the seafood stuffed haddock and my associate, the chicken piccata. Both were fresh, well seasoned and simply delicious. It had to have been the best piece of North Atlantic haddock I have ever eaten. It was accompanied by delicious mashed potatoes and fresh veggies. Mashed potatoes were perfectly seasoned We declined dessert only because we were so stuffed, but both dessert and coffee were offered by our spectacular server, Adam. No rushing at all. Jonathan's is the perfect example of a well run restaurant. Amazing food, great service, professional servers and no "we're closing soon" excuses. We will absolutely be returning. read more

We visited this restaurant this evening and everything was delicious. The ambience was very nice and my kids loved the fish tanks in the middle. We dined inside which was very spacious and the outdoor seating looked really nice too. We went with 3 kids and didn't feel rushed and service was great. My son Jonathan absolutely loved the name and got extra special treatment. He even got to meet the owner Jonathan which left him speechless. The lobster was juicy, steak was perfectly cooked and my husband really enjoyed the pork tenderloin. We had a few appetizers and nothing was left on any plates. Highly recommend!! read more

A second visit to Jonathan's, a year apart and both times the food and service were excellent. The ambiance is nice but not stuffy. Service attentive without being intrusive. On both occasions, we asked for and they were able to prepare stuffed lobster which was not on the menu. It was outstanding and I would highly recommend you asking if they can prepare it for you. Jonathan's is a great place to dine. The food is excellent. A special treat is their homemade ice cream so save room for dessert. I would recommend any of their seafood entrees ( I had the seafood pasta in white wine and garlic sauce which included a generous portion of lobster). Upstairs at Jonathan's is a great place to listen to music. You can buy a dinner/theater combo which includes a premium seat and a coupon to be applied to the dinner; this is a great value. The only downside is due the COVID-19 pandemic, it is hard for the restaurant to find help; there was one server for the entire restaurant on Saturday night, so if you are planning to go the 8:00pm show and want a relaxing dinner, book your table for 6:00pm! read more

This may be the worst meal I have ever had the misfortune of experiencing. This place should be on Kitchen Nightmares or Restaurant Impossible. The entire place is out of the 70's. All the veg tastes like old pool water. The seafood is frozen, meaning not fresh, and massively overcooked. The restaurant claims to be upscale seafood, however you would be better off at a seaside clam shack. The music and event offerings are clearly an effort to compensate for the disgusting food. Haddock stuffed with crabmeat, mashed potatoes-delish Pasta with assorted seafood out of this world. Breads with strawberry butter. Came here on Thanksgiving while visiting Ogunquit, thankful that they are open on that day. Plenty of parking and a good amount of seating inside, limited bar seating though. Limited cocktail list and few beers on tap, didn't get any but mainly wanted to try their food. Got the clam chowder which was disappointing. If you have ten dishes on the menu and you're in Maine with clam chowder being a staple, you've to at least make sure that that comes out right. It was cold and chewy and was not good at all. Don't be fooled by this hidden gem in the woods. Is it a lodge from Davy Crockett's era? Is it a mid-century ranch house with a large parking lot? No. Just go up the steps and into the foyer filled with paintings right out of The Stanley Hotel. I thought I would hear "Midnight With the Stars and You" and Max ?) our concierge would tell me I have been a naughty boy, a very naughty boy! The window seats were all taken or reserved so we sat against the bar wall which was quiet but dark. Our server, Kayon, from Jamaica, mon, was attentive but not haunting. We made it easy for him. We both ordered Lobster Bisque soup with medium rare Steak Diane and a supplemental Lobster Tail Exquisite! The bisque was more of a bowl than a cup so be careful not to fill up on it and the complimentary breads. By the way, the whipped butter has puréed blueberries in it which was a true delight. The steak was succulent and tasty. The mashed potatoes were perfect with the fried onion rings. Earlier that day we had lunch on the beach in Perkins Cove and watched the waves smash the rocks. A beautiful home stood off to the right and we wondered who owns it. What do they do for a living? Lo and behold just above my head was a painting done by a local artist of the same scene we were at! But most importantly is the mannequin with no head or arms standing just outside the back window clothed in a beautiful white wedding dress. What is that all about? I never found out. If I wanted to spend that much on a meal then I would have went somewhere by the water. All the money they charge on the food and drinks clearly is not going to the interior. We had a wonderful meal at Jonathan's. We met an old college friend here on a cold New Year's Day. The reason we chose Jonathans' was because a meal was part of a package deal from our hotel at Admiral's Inn down the street. It was a cold and snowy day. Our reservation was not until 5:30, however there was not ANY places open in Ogunquit because of the holiday to party and It was happy hour. The road were bad, and we showed up early. The manager kindly opened up the bar for us so we would have to venture back out until our reservation. To say it in one word, Jonathan's' is an eclectic theme with high end dining. However. unpolished, this Ogunquit hot spot offers a popular bar, and lounge with flat screen, and 2 huge dining rooms. I also understand that the restaurant also offers live concerts at an upstairs 2nd floor venue. My friend reported that it is many C to D list one hit wonder bands from the 70's and early 80's. Now onto the food: The menu is itself eclectic. Steaks, chops, seafood, and pasta. The dishes are creative and pricey. Entrees start from high teens to up to over $30 a dish. I was impressed that they offered a complimentary amuse bouche, which was a mushroom cap stuffed with a blue cheese ragout. A wonderful surprise in itself and deep and rich in blue cheese flavor. My appetizer was the french onion soup (since it was a very cold snowy New England Night, was appropriate). The soup was more the a stewp (Ray, Rachel 2006). The flavor was rich. The onions were not all caramelized, with some a bit harder than others. Portion size, small to average enjoyed it but it was not a knockout. I wanted something different for my entree, so I ordered "Schnitzel" a fried pork cutlet topped with sauteed mushrooms and onions. It came with an aggressively seasoned butternut squash and green beans. The really liked the dish, however it was not hot. Warm at the most. Also asked for a wine paring to this dish. The waitress was clueless on wine and brought the wine list. I ordered a house white, and it was served late, as I was finishing my meal. Dessert was included, so I got terramissu and coffee which just hit the spot and recharged me for a long drive home to NH. I hope to come back to Jonathan's and enjoy another great meal. The chef appears to be creative and has many nice interpretations of some regular classic dishes. read more

We went here for dinner before a comedy show. We sat in the restaurant and were greeted by pleasant Jamaican staff. Our waitress was so sweet and very attentive. We had the seafood pasta and chicken piccata. Both were excellent! I asked for a wine suggestion for my chicken and the waitress was spot on. Overall a very pleasant experience and well worth the price. After dinner, before the show, we had some drinks at the bar and the bar staff was equally as polite. Great live jazz music in the bar area as well. Definitely will be back! read more

I went to Jonathan's for a concert and unfortunately I had low expectations due to the very high ticket price. I had bought a premier seat in the front row which meant I was paying $25 for dinner credit. I'm a vegetarian so I figured this would be a waste of $25 but it was the price I had to pay for sitting in the front row. I got there the night of the show having never been to Oguinqut. It turned out to be in a nice outdoorsy area. As soon as I walked in I was impressed by the employees. The first young man was very polite and the second one who helped me was even nicer. He said I'm late but my ticket came with a $25 credit and he can get me something wrapped to go quickly and said if I want to order a drink I can take it upstairs to the concert. I looked at the dessert menu which looked delicious and I got a cake which he put nicely in a box. I left it in my car and when I came back he got my Oreo Martini ready. He was even nice enough to walk it upstairs for me. Once I got to the concert hall I had another dessert ticket left which I used to order blueberry cheesecake. I thought it was pretty cool to watch a concert while eating some delicious cheesecake. The tables were set up in seats of four. It didn't feel too awkward though because they didn't serve food upstairs. Nothing annoys me more than having to sit with strangers who are eating something I find offensive. The ticket did say it comes with valet but I never saw such a service. Parking was very easy to find as they had a decent sized lot. The venue was laid back and I really liked it. I left having a good time and I was not sorry I had bought the more expensive ticket. I would recommend it over sitting in the back of the venue for less. read more

Loved the restaurant. I have been here every year of the past 6 years. The dress code has become more casual. We dressed up but there were other guests dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. The service was slow. Took about 45 minutes to get our food. The food is excellent. We got the twin lobsters and Maine Seafood pasta. Both were excellent. The wedge salad was ok nothing special. We also had the mojitos and were delicious. Strongly recommend just get here early if you have tickets to the playhouse. We arrived at 6:00 pm and left at 7:30. read more

You know, this Ogunquit mainstay is worth a visit. Went for a bite after the Sunday matinee at the playhouse. The place is super comfortable to sit, relax, eat, drink and talk. Being off-the-beaten-path just a bit has its perks - like parking and room to breathe! The food was very good, nothing too crazy or trying too hard, and everyone in your group is going to be sure to find something.
