This spot I'd say is great for drinks, but food wise, the owners need to reevaluate on that front. Haloumi Fries ($21) - I don't know what to make of this. It needs a dipping sauce to accompany it to help make it taste better, whether that's ketchup, spicy mayo, etc. Calamari ($24) - Definitely not fresh. Tastes like it came straight out of the freezer and then dumped into a fryer. Beer Braised Short Ribs ($45) - I don't think they slow cooked this enough as the meat was still chewy and the meat does not fall apart. Had to cut this is a knife and that was also a bit tough. Cajun Pizza ($23) - This one I enjoyed the most. Loved the unique topping to make it cajun style. Cheeseburger Egg Roll ($18) - This dish has potential if they did not over fried this to a crisp. I love when I go to a spot and want to order everything in the appetizer menu because I love to snack on multiple things. We actually came here during the superbowl not knowing that they would have the game on but they did and being our last night in the city we got to enjoy tasty bites and drinks and watch the game with the sound on in a not super crazy or crowded bar - perfect night! Since it was the super bowl I had to go for the pigs in a blanket and they were super good! We also got the cheeseburger egg rolls, I will say they are super pickle flavored which I typically don't love, and we also got the steamed bao buns that had duck confit. This is my regular go to bar located right in the heart of midtown Manhattan on 48 th street next to Rockefeller .They have a great variety of draft & bottled beers to choose from. I love their truffle cheese fries . Their other bar bites are also great to taste. This place gets madly crowded post office hours from 5 to 8 after which there's decent room and tables available.My only wish is that they had a good happy house offering , I do hope they introduce a happy hour menu in the future! read more

We picked this place based on location and YELP reviews. It seemed as if it was packed with locals, and I do mean PACKED. Most people were in the front of The Elgin where the door is located. They seemed to be celebrating the end of the work day (it was mid-week) and they celebrated loudly. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, but it was still very loud and very dark (photos were a challenge). Never the less, it suited our needs and our tummies. My daughter had the Smashed Avocado Toast: feta, radish, pumpkin seed, and pickled onion. She declared it as "excellent." My grand daughter had the mozzarella sticks an fries (the usual version), and I had the Apple Gorgonzola Salad: lettuce, candied walnuts, red onion, blackberries, blue cheese, apples, and apple cider vinegar. After a very early morning flight, we dropped our bags at our hotel around the corner and asked our receptionist where her favorite spot to grab a good sit down lunch is, and this was her recommendation. We walked right in at 11:30 just as they were open so there was not many other people in the place. This place is rather large and has a lovely bar with standing tables too for happy hour. We had the fried cauliflower as a starter and split a burger. The burger was freshly made (no frozen patties here) and came out nice and warm with plenty of small McDonald's style fries which I love! I decided to check out the Elgin before an event based on the Great reviews. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to expectations. To begin with, the menu does not include a full list of their drinks so we had to look up our options on the phone. The food offerings were a mishmash of styles, giving the menu a Cheesecake Factory feel, which may play well given the Times Square-adjacent location. The biggest issue was the unexplained $2 surcharge on each of our whiskeys for ordering them "neat". For the uninitiated, a whiskey "neat" is simply an ounce of whiskey poured into a glass with no ice. It takes the least amount of effort to make of any drink in the bar. I've never seen any bar ever charge anything extra for a "neat" whiskey. It was not priced on the menu nor explained to us by the server. The bartender could not explain the charge either. This felt like a scam that someone may be running on the tourists (little did they know I'm a savvy manhattanite). While the food was passable, fraudulent charges automatically disqualify any restaurant from my book. read more
