Came here for brunch on a Sunday and it was delicious! The ambiance is casual but modern, and the service is super quick. There's usually a bit of a wait on weekends, so be prepared to wait. They also have a coffee bar where you can also order food to go! I had the quinoa rice bowl which was delicious and super filling. My mom had the veggie burger with sweet potato fries which she also loved. They had a great selection of food on their menu, and the specials looked great although I didn't get a chance to try them. We found our "new" breakfast and brunch spot....the decor is so attractive and welcoming. They've created a...I'll say it....cozy atmosphere with a menu filled with enticing combinations. Our sandwiches were delicious and that word doesn't do it justice. The fig jam on ham...Cheryll had the sloppy Josephine and the coffee....oh the coffee! The seating is close quarters but that adds to the ambiance and the menu warrants multiple return trips to explore it all. Popped here on a whim after a horrible experience at Hatch 44 . This place looks a bit cafeteria like as you walk in but the demeanor of the greater changes that rather quickly. Super friendly and sweet , he almost makes you eager to wait and even with the mask on you know he has the friendliest smile underneath that mask. The waitresses are just as sweet and friendly. The decor is cute once you get a good look , photos of Edison and bulbs, a Michael Scott quote on the wall and a huge , clean bathroom you can dance in (yes I did a few pirouettes lol) Its seriously is a pleasure being here . Now on to the food ..the apple cider is sweet and delicious (a bit too sweet for my taste but my husband loved it), their hot chocolate is just perfect, creamy and not overpowering sweet, doesn't taste like it's from a powder packet . I've had the Avocado toast with 2 eggs which were done perfectly , my husband's smoky tom was incredible and my sons cloud cakes (pancakes ) were soft and melt in your mouth good. I was pleasantly surprised when I came here. It was a quaint nicely decorated, clean establishment. I didn't know if this was going to be an old-time automat or a cafe. Turns out it was a cafe, with a retro feel so an interesting play on the name Automat. The staff was courteous and the owner was kind enough to come and explain the origin of the name. I ordered the pancakes with blueberries, I usually don't really like pancakes, but the pictures on yelp looked so good I figured why not try. The first bite blew my mind! The pancakes were so fluffy, light, soft and creamy! It was like I was eating a sweet, and tangy cloud! I think I am an Edison Automat pancake fan now because I have been craving them ever since. The price was reasonable, and they have great coffee. The only thing I noticed was the place has a bit of an echo so it's kinda loud but that not a deterrent for those cloud pancakes. read more

Let me start out by saying that I liked the place. The people and the experience. Then why 3 stars?? 1. Completely bogus - I asked for a drink with no ice since the ice hurts my teeth. They charged us $1 to not give us ice. Say what!!! I know it's only a dollar (The bill was $60 or $70 so the amount wasn't important but that move basically says we don't care about our patrons.) 2. Some of the sandwiches are small. After eating the breakfast burrito one person in our party said they needed another sandwich!! Nuff said. 3. Everyone gushes over the Italian Stallion which was ok, needed some more spices. The sausage is sliced up sausage links and kept falling out of the ciabatta bread. Wow, yelpers helped me pick this spot and it delivered! The cloud pancakes were as fluffy and creamy as promised, with perfectly heated maple syrup and a garnish of sliced heated strawberries! The outside of the restaurant looks like a strip mall, lots of free parking, with some outdoor patio tables with umbrellas. As you go in there is a counter for ordering takeout or you can be seated and they will come take your orders. They bring the food to you, and the check, and you take it up to pay at the end. The menu had lots of delicious sounding breakfast items, could see many people also getting the French toast and breakfast sandwiches, but I wanted to try the famous cloud pancakes, yum! To add some protein, I got a side of the chicken sausage, was two large links, each cut lengthwise and browned lightly, very tender and chicken flavored, maybe a local variety or homemade as not at all typical. Service was quick and responsive, friendly, very quick to checkout too. I was there on a Saturday morning, and the tables were turning over quickly, no wait, good sized seating area. The only downside was that the restaurant was a bit noisy, it got a little quieter as people departed, but the ceiling or design etc seemed to amplify the noise of the diners, or everyone was just feeling chipper and talkative. It looks like they specialize in breakfast and lunch, I only tried breakfast items but would definitely go back and try more stuff! Recommended! This is such a cute place. The staff seemed very nice. We waited about 20 to 30 minutes for a table, but we didn't really know what to expect, so we thought this was pretty normal. No one ever said anything to us. Once we were seated, we got a coffee and a late. My friend's drink was cold and not at all what she expected. My coffee was decent and hot. The food was rather disappointing. The egg for the omelet was plastic like, and the ingredients weren't mixed in, like 2 separate dishes. I had asked for toast dry, and it was soaked in butter, but they brought me new toast. My friend got a sad, small sandwich that was not hot. I came here to order a takeout breakfast the other day . the space inside is way bigger than I imagined for some reason . The interior is very clean , modern , and bright . the staff was friendly and i like the fact they have a specials board . I ordered a hot apple cider and a California breakfast sandwich . The cider was good , nothing too spectacular . On the other hand , my sandwich was the best I've ever had when it comes to morning sandwiches . Let me state the good - super yummy food and friendly cashier, clean bathrooms, space is bright and airy. Now.. my first time here so I didn't know what to expect other than the raving 5 star review. As I walked in, to my right was where the cashier was and the tables are to my left. There weren't many tables and all of them were occupied. I stood around for a few minutes but no one greeted me, so I walked up to a waitress delivering food to one of the tables to ask how long the wait is. She replied that this is first come first serve. Ok, I'm looking for a seat to sit my pregnant body down while I wait.. no seat. My friend gets here with her toddler and I immediately feel bad as I picked the place and toddlers don't stay still, so was he suppose to stand for (not sure how long as many patrons are clearly comfortably squatted there with their laptops and books). A simple bench against the wall would've done, but no. Ok, a table frees up and we start to walk towards it. To our dismay, all of the dirty plates, cups, napkins from the people who just left are still there. Were they suppose to have taken it with them as some restaurants ask their patrons to do? But there's no sign indicating this is standard practice... My point is- maybe I missed the sign that says seat yourself, clean up after yourself, but I don't believe there were signs. For regulars, not a big deal, but for first timers and regular potentials, I would have appreciated more attentiveness, and a bench. read more

One of the best brunch restaurants in Edison - both food and price wise. Fair amount of both indoor and outdoor seating with a nice selection of baked goods available for purchase (not sure if they're still doing this post covid!). The food is fresh and made to order. The servers and baristas are so friendly and they work hard to get your food out correctly and as quickly as they can. Some people have left reviews about it being a small place with not enough seating. It's not a diner so it wouldn't have diner seating to accommodate large parties for extended periods of time. There will also usually be a wait on weekends if you go after 10am. The food is worth the wait. This review is solely about the coffee. I just got an iced latte, and it is by far the worst coffee I've had in YEARS. I just paid $3.50 for an iced latte that was 80% milk by volume, and the biggest problem is that the bitterness of the espresso is still overwhelming. I left the premises wishing I had the foresight to go to Dunkin next door instead. Just to give some context - to say that I drink a lot of coffee is an understatement. I am not a productive human being until I've had one or two cups in the morning to pry open my bleary eyes. I often drink another one or two cups during the workday to stay functional. At home in Los Angeles, my husband and I grind whole coffee beans at home, and for days when we are lazy, I have a Nespresso machine. I often drink my espresso black, so I am no stranger to bitter tastes. We are definitely some bougie coffee people, and I'm sad that the Automat will not be the place to get my fix while visiting my family in Central NJ. Protip for the Automat: If you want to get coffee that doesn't need extra milk to hide the bitterness, get some better beans and/or get a better coffee bean roaster. I'd be willing to pay more for higher quality beans and coffee, and you'll go through much less milk in your daily operations. It would be a win/win for everyone. read more

Workers were very helpful, was extremely clean & great choices for food. They had alot of seating & no line, food came out quick and i think i found my go to for a nice breakfast/lunch spot! Finally a local to me café! A nod to the past with a foot in the present decor, pleasing and comfortable. Booskerdoo coffee. Jersey Diner is a fave but today had Nitro in a glass. Which is my preferred method. We ordered soup, sandwiches and baked treats. All were fresh and YAY not bland! Their offers of customizing drinks and meals is appreciated. I recently visited The Edison Automat for my first time this week. Josh was our server and he was absolutely wonderful. As soon as I sat down he noticed a birthday card on the table and asked if it was my guests birthday. He quickly and quietly asked me what dessert they would like before they arrived and Josh planned a surprise birthday song and delicious brownie at the end of our visit. The service was great- the food was fresh and delicious. Josh was prompt and frequented our table to make sure our drinks were always full and food was good. They serve breakfast and lunch and there was a nice crowd here but we lucked out an got a table. The owner Matthew came over and introduced himself and is a very hands on guy.
