We really enjoyed our breakfast here. This is a very small diner with bagel and tables so fair warning. Parking is also a nightmare so be prepared. We sat at the bar since there were no tables available. We were attended promptly and our server was super nice. Both my friend and I ordered the same breakfast and we loved it. I had to go to the DMV nearby early in the morning so I was definitely going to treat myself to a greasy breakfast afterwards. That's when I found Sunshine Grill & Deli. I placed an order via Seamless for The Hog (pork roll, hash brown patty, egg and cheese) and it was ready for pickup before the quoted time. It was a 45 minute drive back home but it held up pretty well, and wasn't something a toaster oven couldn't fix. I opted for wheat bread (I would have wanted a roll but I was trying to be at least a LITTLE bit healthy) and it was great. The meat to cheese to egg ratio was perfect (although the wheat bread didn't hold it very well, which is usually why I get a roll - but my fault). The hash brown was a little bit lost in there because it got soggy so next time I would probably either eat it immediately, or get one on the side. Will definitely come back to try some non-breakfast items one day when I feel like I need another cheat day. read more

I reluctantly downgrade my rating to 4 stars because lately I've noticed a trend of my order notes either not being read or disregarded. I work from home and always place my orders on their website for convenience and speed on pickup. 3 out of 5 of my most recent visits had issues that relate to specific instructions not being adhered to. If I ask for cheddar cheese on a sandwich they give me American. If I say no marinara on sandwich, I still get it. When I ordered onion rings today they gave me waffle fries instead (but no heads up). The least they could do is call me if there's an issue making the order to my specs online, but they chose to make these decisions without involving me - the customer. read more

Found this gem online looking for breakfast options near our hotel. We were immediately greeted by friendly people and served good coffee (I usually hate "diner" type coffee, but this was tasty.) I ordered a pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich and my friend ordered a short stack of pancakes. Both came out quickly and the cook even called over to ask if we needed more syrup (they already had given us plenty). The portions were large and filling. We were checked in on and had coffee topped off several times. I loved that I could pay directly through my phone with the QR code. The only thing I found annoying was the "Let's Go Brandon" mask hanging up. Yes, I know every one is absolutely allowed to have their own political views, but I wish it wasn't necessary to announce in your place of business. I just want to eat and feel welcome. read more

Small Edison gem. You will ride right by it sitting on the corner bright yellow small building. Off street parking can get fill quickly if you come at the wrong time. The staff is welcoming and friendly. And patient while you looking at all the choices they offer. As I am looking locals enter for their usual to go. We were in the area 4 days and went here twice - it was so good!!! First day we got breakfast items - very generous portions and tasty! 2nd time was for lunch. I am on the fence with this place. This is a hole in the wall grill with greasy greasy food and generally unhealthy options. They take pride in items like a cardiac arrest sandwich. The Sunshine Grill on Amboy Avenue, Edison, NJ, is that bright yellow building that reflects the nature of the business within. Showing its age from the mid-20th Century, it is a typical luncheonette, with a six stool counter and about ten tables full of locals getting their fill of American cuisine from pancakes to burgers, all done on the small kitchen grill hidden from view to all but us spinner sitters. From that vantage point you can see all the hectic fun the cook and his helpers are having slinging hash and pucks from dawn until late afternoon. As a first timer, I wanted to try what Sunshine was most famous for - their burgers. I ordered the California Burger with cheese, and enjoyed watching all the people coming in after me finding seats and chil-laxing while their grub was being constructed. Everyone seemed to know everyone else in this joint, and the servers were genuine originals to this part of Jersey. I was "honeyed," and "sweet hearted," a half dozen times. So nice to feel like home, although my childhood was spent a bit farther north in Bergen County. My burger was that it could be. Slightly passed the desired medium finish, it was still very good, with the overload of lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and ketchup, on a decent Kaiser roll. I tried to eat the whole thing with my hands, but the mayo made the innards slippery, and every bite had an equal and opposite leak out the other end of the sammy. Completed the task with knife and fork, although I knew the young dudes next to me were wondering about me. They decided to give me a pass because I offered to move down a stool so they all could sit at the counter. Loved the atmosphere and the honest seriousness of the burger. No. It wasn't Shake Shack (thank goodness), but it was way ahead of those highway stops, and a tip of the hat to real tasty Americana. read more

Great place to stop by to try a NJ staple known as the pork roll.. Here, I got The Hog, which has pork roll, hashbrown, eggs, and cheese. The sandwich was perfect, hearty and filling. The saltiness of the pork, texture of the egg, tang of the cheese, with the crispy deep-fried hashbrown, all on a soft roll. It was a great introduction to NJ, coming off the airplane and driving to my friend's wedding weekend. To top, the staff was very friendly, got to chatting with them for about half an hour. They were very welcoming to their state and great sharing stories and laughs. Highly recommend this chill, off-the-beaten path locale and will definitely stop by again next time I'm in town to try more of their food!! read more

Ordered the Greek omelet and French toast. It is a small grill so there isn't that much seating around. Decent parking lot. The woman that gave me my order was nice, but when I opened the food, it didn't seem right. The French toast did not look like French toast, it was on the burnt side and they did not taste right either. The bread that was given with the omelet was cold as well. My esteemed colleague Riccardo Ver Feltersnatch quite enjoys their sausage, egg and cheese which he lovingly reconstructs daily. Our guitarist Richie W. Lickenrod likes his sammy with scramby egg (1 egg only) and extra bacon and although they barely ever get his order right its that much more "righteous" when they finally do. Although head council Scooter Tootbooger can't eat 95% of their menu they are his go to for his favorite dish: an insanely large bowl of chopped boiled egg and cucumber. Ordered a Jersey Giant Burger which was a burger with pork roll, fried egg, and American cheese on a roll. It arrived nicely packaged and put together. The bacon was excellent! Loved that it was not charred to a crisp. It was cooked slightly about the midway mark. The egg was just a fried egg. The negative of this burger was the burger itself. It was overwhelmed in the entire sandwich. The burger was on the thinner side and cooked medium well, but I requested medium rare. The waffle fries here were pretty good. I also ordered hash browns (by accident). That's carb overload! Actually wanted corn beef hash, which is just as bad. I just noticed its not even on the menu! It tasted good - lightly seasoned and thinly grated potatoes. Not worth $3.99 though. All in all I would order delivery from here again. The food is decent. Love this type of food for breakfast or lunch. We ordered a ton of dishes, and everything was delicious. Fluffy and light pancakes Hearty and juicy sausages Crispy hash browns (patty or shredded) and gooey eggs Burgers/fries Fried chicken sandwich/fries Super friendly staff, people you can talk to leisurely. I can tell that the staff have a good relationship, a comfortable environment. A large parking lot, but the spaces aren't designated, so you can park anywhere. But I think this is more of a quick take out spot/delivery. They have around 5 or so tables, some bar dining, but definitely no frills. You don't really need to sit here for a long time for your meal, because it does not have that cozy vibe. But that's OK, it's the food that matters! read more

Sunshine Grill is probably one of those places you've driven by a million times but have never gotten the nerve to try. It was much scarier before the renovation a few years ago, triggered by a fire in the kitchen that sadly kept them off the grid for a period of time. That's all history now, and Sunshine Grill is back at it, serving up some of the best greasy spoon fare you'll find in the area. If you've read my reviews before, you know I'm not a fan of pretty much any of the local diners in the area. It infuriates me to have moved back to Jersey only to find that most diners suck and can't even serve up a halfway decent breakfast or patty melt. As a result, I've been forced to go underground, looking for that little hole in the wall, mom-and-pop shop that ends up being a local secret gem. And Sunshine Grill fits that bill perfectly. For all the people who drone on and on about the amazingness that is the White Rose System -- a place that I, admittedly, spent many a wasted night back in college -- do yourself a favor and branch out a bit. Give Sunshine a try. I packed the family up for breakfast and was quick to overrule any votes for Le Peep, which I have recently sworn out of the morning rotation. Today, we'd go where I wanted to go. And that would be the Sunshine Grill. You know what you're getting into when you arrive to see the cook outside in the parking lot pumping butts while the grill is slow. That's part of the charm of a place like this. The decor inside is nothing to write home about: a few tables/booths and a counter of stools, and an open flattop grill where most of the magic happens. As with many of these places nowadays, there's an odd sprinkling of Mexican food on the menu. My kids were thrilled because they were in the mood for chips and guacamole. I would have never, ever ordered anything Mexican from the Sunshine Grill had it not been for my kids. And let me tell you, these were some of the tastiest (read: greasiest) freshly made chips and guac I've had in a long time. But that's not what I'm writing about. Breakfast here is excellent -- maybe the best in the area. The burgers and sandwiches all have interesting names. I had the Hog, which I recall was your classic PEC, but served with home fries, lettuce, tomato, and a schmear of mayo -- the perfect hangover sandwich. My wife had an egg and cheese sandwich with avocado on a lightly toasted, buttered roll, and she was super-happy. (And remember: happy wife, happy life.) This was my first visit back since they reopened. When my buddy lived nearby many years ago, we'd uh... often get the munchies and find ourselves hanging at Sunshine. I remember the burgers being awesome, and they now have an incredibly delectable burger menu, with some insane pairings like a mac and cheese-stuffed burger. Seriously? STFU! That sounds awesome. Next time. My only beef with Sunshine is the hours. They're only open until 7pm, and that's only on Friday and Saturday. What's a guy supposed to do when that late night craving hits?
