    Ube with cheese pandesal
    Janinne F.

We came in first thing in the morning for breakfast- of course we had to try the tapsilog, ube pancakes, and dulce de Leche coffee. I enjoyed the tapsilog but the beef was different than the usual but the rice was good too! The ube pancakes was overloaded with berries! So good! The restaurant is smaller than what I thought it would be but its cozy. The bathroom placement was just different, you have to go through the kitchen BUT the bathroom is so clean! The food was served in paper plates and plastic utensils, which i wish was not the case because the less waste the better for the environment but I get it though the manpower is lacking! I was not informed that there was an extra $1 charge for the whipped cream in my coffee. I wouldve opted out of the whipped cream. The people were nice all throughout but it was just those two things that can be improved on! BUT the Ube pandesal with cheese was sooooo good and unexpected. It seems like cream cheese was used as the filling and they were generous with it too.

Came here for some dinner on Wednesday evening. I ordered the chicken inasal, chicken teriaki, veggie spring rolls, chicken lumpia, ube cookies, ube cheesecake, and the regular burnt cheesecake. Everything took about 40 min to prepare fresh. The food was good and flavorful. The ube cheesecake was the best thing.

Best Filipino food I've ever had. We were in town for just the weekend and found this place near by and got there only an hour before they closed on Saturday. I think the most upsetting thing was we'll be out of town before then open up again, because we wanted to try more. The sisig had amazing texture and seasoning. The Basque cheesecake was otherworldly even as someone who doesn't like ube 10/10. Not the best halo halo I've had, but still good. Everything was simply amazing.

We visited them after a party nearby. They have a small parking lot so you may need to be lucky when you visit. Ordered a few items and drinks. Overall good food, ok service. Takes a long time from ordering to table. Music choice *thumbs up* Will give them a try but not anytime soon. CORRECTION: Please read owner's reply. 5% DISCOUNT when using cash over $30

When it takes awhile to get your food, that's because it's being cooked fresh! Never mind the time it takes, you can always chat with the friendly owner and the ever-smiling staff, this hole-in-the-wall Filipino restaurant is simply one of the best in homemade cooking! A good reminder from the owner, he recommends that we call in the orders even if we're still miles away to avoid the long wait time. It was so worth the wait anyway! Their dishes are simple, yet well thought of. Not salty, not too sweet, just a good balance of mouth-watering dishes! We keep coming back even if we're miles away Highly recommended - their tapas, longanizas served with hot rice and side salads, tasty noodles and yummy desserts make this one of the best food trips ever!

We ordered the crispy pork platter which is good for 4-6 people and got mangomansi. I loved the mangomansi it was very refreshing. Crispy pork platter came with 12 pcs of lumpia, pork sisig, lechon kawali, and garlic rice. The sisig was ok for me. It is small inside so not much seating inside. They had no bathroom as well.

This spot is quickly becoming one of my weekly go-to's. I have ordered from them three times and each time has been yum. My favorite dish is their chicken teriyaki, it's different than other restaurants, not too sweet with a nice char on the chicken. They also serve it on a bed of rice, with Cesar salad and a fried egg on the side. Both pictures are of the teriyaki chicken, one was eaten in house, one was take away. I'm looking forward to trying more of the dishes on the menu, I'm sure they'll also be good.

One of my go-to Filipino food places is the Plain and Simpol in Metuchen. I love the cozy vibe of their small dining area, and the staff are always welcoming and friendly. We started with the hot ube latte and the iced leche flan latte. I preferred the ube latte since it wasn't too sweet, while the leche flan one was a bit on the sweeter side. For food, I got the Shanghai, salmon sisig, pork longanissa, and chicken teriyaki. You really can't go wrong with the Shanghai, longanissa, and chicken teriyaki as they were all flavorful and satisfying. I wasn't a big fan of the salmon sisig though; it wasn't as crispy as I expected. Overall, I'll definitely be coming back. The dine-in service is pretty good, and it's nice that they have a free parking lot too.

Food - so good and quick order in advance via door dash. Love the salad side with rice and pork. It's a nice tasty ceasar salad with the rice and pork which makes it more healthy way. Service - quick especially around lunch time and ordering in advance at lunch helps. Ambiance- blends into the neighborhood so you might miss this and working limited. But there is a shopping center right across street just in case and walk across. It is worth it !!

I won't be able to rave enough about how good this place is. A small restaurant tucked away in Metuchen. Not much seating but don't let that discourage you. I have been here twice & plan to stop by many, MANY more times. Everything I've had so far is delicious, the pork adobo, the chicken Inasal, the ube cookie. Staff is super nice & will take the time to explain what their items are & what's in it. If you want authentic filipino food this is a place you have to try.

I've ordered from Plain and Simpol several times and their food is always delicious. The Ooh Lam platter has great variety and has always been a hit among my friends and family for a take out option. There's minimal seating inside but when I've eaten there, it felt like I was eating at a neighbor's house - everyone was hospitable and it felt welcoming and like I was eating home-cooked food. Highly recommend if you're looking for great Filipino food in the area!

I drove past this restaurant a million times and never new it was there. Its located in a small plaza with a one way entrance. Luckily someone gave it a review on Instagram and I had to try it for myself. The food here is really good! I visited here three days in a row to try something different. Each dish has its unique flavor that satisfies your tastebuds. Their prices are reasonable. Its cozy in the inside, so I do not recommend you plan to sit down and eat.

Plain & Simpol, Simply Pleasant. What a wonderful suprise visiting this place after being bookmarked for so long. Small casual restaurant with only a few dining tables. Food is made to order, so expect a bit of a wait that will be worthwhile. I have been her 3 times this summer since my first check-in. Each visit has always included the turon (filled with jackfuit). The halo halo is delicously complete with all ingredients. Service is friendly and accommodating. Melanie is welcoming and ready to provide Plain & Simpol service. Looking forward to getting more Turon & Halo Halo.

We were quite hungry so we ordered one of the tower sets and some other stuff like lumpia and eggs. I loved the tower- it featured a superb mix of meats, potatoes, eggs, and sweet pastries. I will definitely say either share it or come super hungry because I was stuffed to the brim by the end of the meal. Service is super fast and efficient too. The owner did rounds to talk to everyone as well which felt quite inviting. The vibe inside is also nice and cozy, and the tables are spaced pretty far apart so it doesn't feel crammed in there. Overall, highly recommend as one of the best Filipino spots and brunch spots in the central Jersey area.

Maricels Kitchen Is Bitchen!…read more What a imaginative way to serve several dishes at 1 time. Usually called a boodle or Ramadan, where the layout several dishes on leaves on the table, all dishes were served on a 3 tier tower. Cute for a celebration. The towers immediately brought to mind English tea service, with finger foods displayed on two- or three-tier stands. The customer service truly stood out, from the attentive waitstaff to the three chefs who came out to greet us--including Chef Maricel herself--the hospitality felt warm and genuine. The dining room is cozy and inviting, with a mix of sofas and chairs giving living-room vibe. They offer two preset towers, and we ordered the first: The Classic Filipino Brunch Tower, which included: Siomai, Crispy Shrimp, Ukoy (sweet potato and vegetable fritters), Pork Tocino, Beef Tapa, Bangus (milkfish), Garlic Fried Rice, Fried Eggs, Salted Eggs with Tomatoes and Atchara, Homemade Pandesal, Suman, and the Chef's selection of homemade pastries. It would be great if guests could choose items from a list or make substitutions. There were no substitutions allowed, so we had to pick the tower with the fewest items we wouldn't eat. I especially wanted the Torta Talong from Tower 2, but it wasn't available as a side dish. The siomai was the first item cooked--it arrived cold and had started to harden. Everything else was delicious. Since the towers are meant to be shared, providing tongs would be a thoughtful touch and more hygienic for communal dining. We also ordered a few side dishes. The Lumpia Shanghai were fresh and delicious, though a few were still pink inside. The Baked Siopao was dry and lacked sufficient meat and sauce. The Empanadas, however, were the clear favorite--fresh, flaky, generously filled with savory seasoned beef and vegetables, and baked to perfection. Every bite was a flavor explosion, and we were literally fork-fighting over them. The Sans Rival was the perfect ending to the meal--so good that we ordered an extra slice to take home. **BYO LIQOUR** I would love to take my Mom for a dinner.

The Chicken Sisig, Palabok, pork BBQ and sizzling Biko with ice cream are a must-try from the food menu. The appetizers, like the piping hot vegetable lumpia and their humongous portion of Halo-halo as dessert are highly recommended by me and other reviewers. When we dined at this place, the whole staff gave me a feeling as if I was eating at an aunt's house, with the owner and staff providing very welcoming, family-style care. I have been living in NY for more than 30 years, have already eaten in so many low and high-end Filipino restaurants, in terms of food quality and taste, I may say this by far is the best that I have experienced. If given the chance to be in New Jersey again, I will definitely, 100% be back to this place for their delicious and flavorful food. Some of my companions point out that the seating area is relatively small, which can lead to limited availability during peak times, and a few note the interior decor is fairly plain but it did not matter to me because the food that I ordered/tried were great and amazing (properly spiced, cooked very well and soooooooo delicious!! ). Food portions are generous, presentation was appetizing and excellent, staff service was attentive and great ( I noticed that our water glasses were always filled up which is a service very consistent in so many high-priced restaurants that I have been ). Table setting is good, food utensils and plates were very clean ( yes, I checked it! ). Lechon was cut thinner not the usual big chunks and the oil tasted old and was greasy . Sinigang with the Baboy was very underwhelming the Baboy wasn't boiled down enough . The sisig has too much of a soy sauce taste and way too much mayo on top . The chicharron bulaklak was okay could have used a bit more seasoning and seemed to be a popular item that day . Inflation is a B!tch and everybody is taking advantage of it in their own way. I cook better than these restaurants anyway. We were just trying to patronize to show support. I'll be cooking from home until this lunacy ceases to persist.

We came on a Friday at lunch 11/8/24. My husband and myself ordered food and ate it at the restaurant. I can only speak for the food I ate. Our food was places in a black to go container. I ordered sour soup, rice and Lechon kawali. The food is good. My husband ate all his food. We also had take orders Pork bbq on a stick Beef and chicken empanadas Dried fish Suman sa lihiya and I also requested additional brown sweet sauce. I was so happy ! We went home- unpacked the food I was excited to eat by suman- I opened both brown sweet sauce to find MOLD GROWING ON BOTH CONTAINERS. This is unacceptable. It just killed my vibe. You as restaurant workers who represent the food you make and sell, should know better. This is not good business! I am not to sure if I will return. It may be closer to home , MOLD ON THE FOOD YOU SELL IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! At least in Jersey city , I can look at the food that I am buying. Advise to owner and employees: please look before selling food to customers.

I DEVOURED that Fried Chicken in the car while I was driving!! It didn't even stand a chance! It was DELICIOUS!! Crunchy, flavorful, and the portion was generous!! Next time, I'm gonna have to have it there with some rice! It was soooo good! The service was super nice! It took a long while for the food to come out but it was worth the wait! The place is cute with minimal fun, festive Filipino decor. Super clean and doesn't smell like patis as soon as you walk in. Can't wait to come again!

They have the roasted garlic peanuts, the crunchy ukoy that is perfectly crispy, halo-halo, flan etc. all at the register so you can add them onto your order for a snack or a dessert. Now for the food! The BBQ pork kababs 100% flavor and tender; not dry or tasting re heated yeilding tough meat. The curry was excellent in the amount of curry and coconut we got in each bite. My absolute favorite is the Tapsilog (beef, egg, garlic rice) because their beef tasted well marinated. The service is good, you can speak Tagalog or English when placing an order. The interior features a framed origin story, bold colors and tables to sit at.
