Found this place searching for a place to eat with my partner, after a late arrival into JFK. At first we were thrown by the circa 1980, LES dive bar, decor and patina, not that there's anything wrong with that, just not what we expected. Service is no frills, order at the bar, they bring the food to your table. We ordered and got our drinks lighting fast. The food was awesome, some of the best Fried Chicken I ever had, crispy, juicy and nicely seasoned. My partner had the Mexican Chicken Soup, she loved it and let me get a taste, I agreed, it was amazing. We will return for sure! read more

Love coming here! It's always pretty busy. The drinks are delicious and they have some tiki drinks - the food is such a treat too. The chicken is good. The Mac and cheese was the only thing that was kind of whatever too me - they came in these chunks and I like ooey-gooey Mac and cheese, not solidified. Order at the bar so not much staff time. It's the commodore so fuck customer service? luckily we didn't eat the excessive food that was delivered to the table on accident (they did serve it to other people even though it set out on our table for ten minutes) even if they forgot half our actual order, but they did pour out my beer and take my full pack of cigarettes that had suddenly been thrown out into the "kitchen trash" (I was on the patio) and was covered in food and drink (according to the server that obviously gave them away) while I went the bathroom. so we waited, got our order wrong, got our drinks tossed and was told at the end on top of tipping over twenty percent because it happens, "well, cancer is making a come back" read more

No longer do I live in New York, however, and my visits are few and far between; The Commodore and I, ships passing in the night. Our goal was a midday feeding, though one can't feed at such a bar without the addition of drink; and so we did and it was good. At an establishment such as this, the demand is great, so all items must be ordered at once. We ordered three Rum Punches ($12/p), a Fried Chicken Plate ($17), Cadillac Nachos ($15), and two Hamburgers ($12/p). The Rum drink is the one to get if you like sweet libations that also pack a Punch of booze. Our go-to. The Fried Chicken is their staple item, or so my friends postulate. Though I've never had it, they return time and time again. The Nachos are a delight. Gooey and tangy; a perfect bite every time. Finally, the Hamburger with cheese, also known as a Cheeseburger: a soft bun, finely shredded lettuce, crisp tomato, onion, pickle, mayo, topped with a whimsical umbrella; my favorite burger in the city. Enjoyed a Pina Colada and snack at The Commodore on Saturday evening. It is a bar that gets crazy, but there is a clear reason why, solid food and strong drinks. Quality: While my experience was colored by the hectic nature of the bar, it is hard to complain about my drink or food. They sling tasty Pina Coladas, which are their signature drink, and I will not complain about an opportunity to enjoy the frozen beverage. For food, I shared a Mild Breast Sandwich, which had good flavor and texture. Also, ordered a massive plate of salty fries to go along with it. Quantity: Strong drinks and large food portions. Value: $15 for a Pina Colada. $16 for the Mild Breast Sandwich. $9 for the Large French Fries. Ambiance: The Commodore is a dive bar and fried chicken spot located in Williamsburg. It straddles bar and diner, but when packed it feels like a madhouse. The space is pretty large with booths in two different areas and a large bar in the second bigger space. When the weather is nice, they have some tables on the sidewalk and under a street shelter. The music was loud pop dance music, and the televisions that were on showed retro movies. I ordered the veggie burger made vegan (no cheese or mayo) and after eating about half of it, I wasn't sure if it was a meat burger or veggie (Beyond Burger) after eating some of it. "I need to find the best chicken sandwich in the city," my cousin declared out of nowhere as we were shopping in SoHo this past weekend. Happy to oblige, I quickly pulled up Yelp and did some research and The Commodore came up. So, we ambitiously walked from SoHo across the Williamsburg Bridge and into an unmarked dive bar that we correctly guessed was the right place with the help of a dusty neon sign advertising "breasts" out front. What have we gotten ourselves into? That was the first thought that went through my mind. This certainly didn't look like a place where, an hour and a half later, I'd be sitting in sheer bliss thinking "this was the best meal I've ever had in my life." And yet... We placed our orders at the bar: she had the chicken sandwich ($13) and I had the chicken platter ($14). Along with the food, she had a frozen mojito and I a frozen piña colada (both $12 I believe) after admiring the ones our neighbors were drinking. We headed out to the back porch, and after admittedly a little bit too long waiting (we think they forgot our orders initially) our food arrived. BEST. CHICKEN. EVER. Perfectly fried, crispy but not too greasy, the perfect layer of breading, tender and juicy and cooked throughout. 3 large pieces with practically no bone and no grizzle. Served with two hot sauces (both delicious) and a honey butter that was to-die-for atop the three phenomenal mini biscuits. And for only $14? Absolutely unheard of. Already planning my trip back. Good food, not sure about the staff. Stopped by for a meal to-go and my phone was about to die so I asked for an estimate on the meal completion. The woman working the window was really rude and abrupt. She said, "it's ready when it comes out". Didn't attempt to share how long it usually takes or perhaps ask the kitchen staff. It's not like they were busy or as if there was a line behind me. But on to the shrimp po-boy, it was delicious. A great ratio of shrimp to bread and the shrimp were fried nicely. It's definitely a down and dirty dive spot (seat yourself, pretty slow service) but holy shit do they own it. The atmosphere reminds me of the hang out bar in the movie Goodefellas. Now to the good part, the food AND drink. Incredibly seasoned and crunchy fries. I got the mild breast sando which was so so good. Chicken was not an overly massive chunky piece of chicken (like you get at Chik fil a) and the breading was unique, in a very good way. So let's discuss Sunday Fundays, fried chicken cravings and impromptu girl nights. If you know me well enough, there's always a backstory to these reviews. I went biking by the water and near Bedford Ave and then made my way back to a meetup with my girls. Chicken. The fried chicken. The HOT breast. Can I just take a moment here because my mouth literally just started salivating. Clearly, that was the highlight because I jumped past the service and ambiance, so I digress. Service/Ambiance: Alison was the absolute sweetest. She called us babes--I love cute names. Anyway, she was super accommodating--cleaned our table, adjusted our drinks when they came out slightly off, gave A1 recommendations and was honest about it. We sat outside in the Brooklyn air on a summer-turning-fall night and it was lovely. Food: Back to the chicken. Please. I had the hot breast as I mentioned before. Crispy, spicy, well seasoned. Did I mention spicy? I'm Togolese (African) you guys and I was PLEASED. My best friend on the other hand, not so much. She also ordered the hot breast and was struggling the whole time. Ken had the mild chicken-- same story: delicious. My sister has the fish tacos--they were huge, with a lot of coleslaw. Aside from the coleslaw overload, she did enjoy it. We also had biscuits with honey butter--um yes? And a MASSIVE side of fries. Again, salivating. Moving on. Drinks: A Hurricane for me, two Frozen Mojitos and a Frozen Margarita. I loved my Hurricane: adequate liquor-- all 5 of them. Hehe. The 1 star demerit is for the preparation of the frozen drinks. There was no simple syrup in any of them the first time. And the second time, all the bartender did was add the syrup to the top of the drink. That's a no no. But Alison brought out some Agave to remedy that issue. Overall, a Sunday success story. Stop 3 out of 5 on my culinary tour of Brooklyn was in search of some delicious fried chicken. The Commodore certainly didn't disappoint. Thanks to Yelp, I knew that the restaurant doesn't have a sign outside. Thanks to being a suburbanite, I still did a double take inside to make sure I was in the right place until the nautical theme gave it away. I lucked into a seat at the bar and ordered the fried chicken plate. The aesthetic is dive bar but it feels comfortable as opposed to dodgy, the staff is pleasant and professional. The chicken plate arrived in front of me and included three piping hot and crispy thighs and three mini biscuits with sweet butter and two dipping sauces. The fried chicken was extremely hot but so damn good, I couldn't wait for it to cool before laying siege to it. The biscuits were tender, flaky, and buttery. Take out brings a different experience. The hot fish sandwich is ok. Sandwiches between a sesame seed bun, slaw, pickles and hot sauce. The fried fish lacks flavor and I wish there was some type of tartar sauce but it's not bad. The nachos are large with a sloppy mess of queso, beans overkill, hot sauce and different types of salsa. You would walk by this place and just think it's a dive bar on the inside based on the amount of people sitting at their outside tables having a beer. But this place actually has one of the best chicken sandwiches I've had in the city. It was a huge chicken breast, fried and seasoned perfectly, on a butter roll. Tiffany the "bartender" physically assaulted us with spray guns and violent language after we politely corrected the order that Tiffany got wrong... to the point where my friends entire face and body was soaking wet. I get people having bad days but when is it ever ok to physically assault anyone?? I've seen MANY reviews complaining about the rude bartender and it sounds like it's Tiffany. I really hope Commodore fixes this - I was a regular customer but physical violence is NEVER ok. read more

This used to be my go to spot prior to the pandemic whenever I was bored and wanted good food and laughs. Recently, I ordered a shrimp Po boy, which is a new addition to their menu as far as I know. It was shockingly lackluster and I was sorry I did not order a chicken sandwich instead. It was kind of bland and soggy overall. I also ordered biscuits for breakfast the following day, and must say that they were consistently good, as I know them to be (especially being a day old?). The Commodore will always have a place in my heart, but I will stick to what I know is good and only consider new menu items whenever the city fully re-opens and I can tell the guys in the kitchen to make my food "con amor," which always made them laugh, but the food was always delicious. read more
