The fried chicken was juicy and skin was crispy but breading was not too heavy or thick. Dip the chicken skin in the honey butter if you want to be ultra indulgent. We didn't start the fire. But something did. And sadly Commodore's kitchen was closed for months while they fixed the kitchen and the backyard that has sadly sustained a bunch of damage. They kept slinging drinks and finally after what felt like an eternity, the kitchen doors unlocked and fried chicken sandwiches were to be had again for all. I've had almost everything on the menu, and I must say while the hot breast is delicious. The Commodore probably has my one of favorite burgers in the city. If you're ordering with a group, grab a kale caesar and of course the nachos which honestly you should order even if you're alone because their nachos are comparable to none. The brisket sandwich is also a sleeper hit. You'll see hand after hand carrying either a rum punch or their signature drink Commodore (a pina colada), but you should know the best frozen drink here is the mojito. A longtime Willy B dive bar with surprisingly good food and nice shabbily dressed people, one of the best chicken sandwiches in the game, great place to get some food and a few drinks, they do a great job keeping it looking filthy. The chicken sandwich is a dream, a perfectly fried entire breast pounded a touch thin to sort of fit on a burger bun, I enjoy the hot version. I seem to remember their tuna melt is surprisingly excellent. The fries are the way you want your fries-salty and fresh, as opposed to old and bland, like you. My friend chose the commodore as the spot we'd grab drinks in Williamsburg to catch up at. I had never been prior and walked past it a dozen times so I was excited to hear that she had booked a reservation for us on a Sunday evening. I'd say this spot in somewhere between a dive bar and a diner, in a sense that it's no frills and they've got delicious items you would want while downing a $12 blue hawaiian. We were seated at a booth next to the main entrance. When it came time to order I went with the hot chicken sandwich with a side of cole slaw. This sandwich hit the spot and it definitely was a bit hotter than expected. For drinks we both went with the house mojito which was super tasty. So if you don't already know where this place is...have a good time. "Hey guys I have an idea, let's make a restaurant that has no signs!" As a hint, it's across the street from The Knitting Factory and it's painted blue. You also can't see into the windows. Now let's talk about the experience. Retro punk was playing the whole time we were there. Not complaining. You seat yourself which is cool. It's two rooms. One room has the bar, seats tables and chairs. The other room is diner style table booths. If you haven't already been frustrated by trying to figure out if you're at the right place or not, there are no waiters. So once you pick up your menu, you may realize that certain food is only served at certain times. Then it says, order from the bar. So now let's venture over to the other room. You know when a bar is really crowded and it's hard to just get in between people to speak to the bartender to order a drink? Well that's how you order your food. Shouting over people sitting at the bar who are in conversation enjoying their drinks. Website said accepts credit cards so that's great. Oh wait, there is a $20 limit that you have to reach, so if you're by yourself...walk over to the in house ATM machine and pay a fee to take out money to buy your food. They give you a number and walk back to the other room where you may or not be sitting. So Commodore Plate is the first thing on the menu. Now there are descriptions on the things on the menu, but who knows maybe their Commodore Plate is more than just eggs, hash browns, and toast. It's a southern menu, maybe the south does that stuff better than we do here in NY. Food came pretty quick. And to my amazement, it was nothing but eggs, hash browns, and dry toast. The Commodore Plate, the Plate named after the restaurant is diner food but more bland. Now fortunately for my party, they ordered better items...which they said were great. They had the chicken biscuits and cheese grits. They said it was definitely tasty. All in all, I'm sure the other menu items were great. But we all agreed that the experience sucks. read more

Ughhhhh I felt so gross after eating here. In the moment everything tasted really good and seemed really fresh and yummy buuuuutttttt then... 15 minutes late the itis kicked in and the oil soaked fried chicken in my body started to take over. I almost laid on the bench and I almost passed the F out right there and if I had I probably would not have woken up until 2 days later. Came here back on July 21 after being in the hood. This place is a total dive bar but opposite,. You walk UP the stairs not down. It has video games inside and pinball . It has Championship sprit racing game which is a quarter to play. The have a bar section which was pretty crowded. We sat a table opposite the bar . They have old items all over the place . Games ,toys ,dolls patches and more ... pretty loud inside and it's dinner area is not so big but grab a seat to stay a while , the chicken sandwich is definitely on point you can order it Hot or MEDUIM. it's about $15 but it's so huge that you can splint in in half . I brought 2 sandwiches and gave one to my friend. It's definitely one thing I be back for here . And a decent beer selection here too. read more

I DREAM of this place if I am being honest. My husband took me here for my birthday in Feb and we just revisited again a few days ago. I think I will always stop here when I am in the area just to order the chicken sandwich. The chicken is perfectly cooked, the coleslaw is delicious, and with a side of fries? perfection. I have had both the mild and the medium sandwiches so far and I would recommend them both. Used to love the chicken here. They were shut down for a while because of a kitchen fire, but we came twice since they reopened. The chicken has gone down in quality: The skin is so heavily battered that it doesn't "connect with the flesh (you know what I'm trying to say). I will start off this review with one key fact - I don't really like fried chicken. A group of three of us went to the Commodore on Friday, as recommended by a colleague. The bar is in a bustling part of Williamsburg. It is unmarked but big and easy to find. My only real problem with this place is that it is a "seat yourself" establishment. While we had no issue getting a table within our first five minutes of being there, I could see that getting frustrating. We were seated at a large table in the back (good place for groups) which is bordered by a fish tank. We ordered a round of drinks, an order of biscuits, and chips and queso for the table. The two others ordered the fried chicken platter whereas I went with the medium fried chicken sandwich. Holy. Cow. I had previously only met one piece of fried chicken that I actually enjoyed (at The Dutch) and now am happy to add this place to the rotation. The sandwich had a bit of a kick to it but wasn't overwhelming by any means. The bun was perfect and flavorful and the chicken itself was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I was honestly shocked at how much I loved this sandwich. I almost ate the entire thing (see corresponding picture to understand why that's a feat). The whole meal was reasonably priced, including drinks. None of us spoke during the entire meal. Hint: dipping the chicken sandwich in the queso isn't a bad idea, either. The service, for a self-seating, order-at-the-bar kind of place, was attentive. Our server brought our food out promptly and had no issue grabbing us extra sauces/condiments. My roommate forgot her sunglasses at the restaurant and when we went back to retrieve them, our server had not only told the new people at our table that she had them, but remembered us and had placed them in the kitchen for us. Great experience overall; would definitely go back. Be prewarned though - after this dinner, all three of us had consumed so much food/salt that none of us made it out that night. Many many stars to The Commodore for their food, especially their famous fried chicken sandwich. Fewer stars for the overall experience, as it can be a high pressure situation to try to get a table and get an order in during busy times. There's no hostess or anything, so that means a lot of hovering around waiting for people to give up their tables. And all ordering is done at the bar, so it can be quite hectic to navigate. But let's focus on the positive. The hot, medium, or mild breast sandwich comes with an enormous piece of perfectly fried chicken on a sesame bun with cole slaw. I got the medium which was actually like a mild, so next time I think I might go full hot. We also got a side of queso and chips, which was incredibly satisfying in a dirty way, and the kale salad, which was also surprisingly satisfying in a less dirty way. They also offer some fun tiki-like cocktails, though we decided to keep it simple with cans of beer and cider. Though there's no waiter service per se, those delivering the food are really nice and asked us how our food was. There's a self-serve water jug toward the back door, and there's some outdoor seating for when it's not freezing out. Overall, picture your normal busy dive bar situation plus some insanely delicious and indulgent eats. If that sounds like your jam, then head on over to The Commodore! read more

Great environment and excellent precautions with regards to COVID. The "Hot Chicken Breast" is absolutely a must get from this place! It has excellent presentation, a large portion size, it's heavy, cooked perfectly (no spot was left undercooked or overcooked), the coleslaw and pickles complement the spicyness and taste of the overall sandwich, and lastly it has good aftertaste. Four & a Half. Love this place, & how can you not. Early 80s decor, crazy hipster soundtrack that can veer from vintage punk and metal, to old school rap, to swing. Some of the best food in Williamsburg from one of its most influential, grizzliest. reddest headed, and most bad ass cooks. -Amazing fried chicken even if its only dark meat, its still the neighborhoods best, (yes better than Pies & thighs & comes with those killer sauces & exemplary biscuits/ -Incredible burger, sort of like a really elevated big mac. -the famous booze-infused pimento stuffed "adult-cheese" my favorite cheese sandwich anywhere. Fries are usually about perfect. The drinks are tops too; you gotta get the Commodore once, but my favorite is the enhanced greyhound humorously dubbed the Trailways, which is so much better with the addition of Mint. Despite the fact the the drink prices have been inflating steadily in the past few years since the place is opening, its still pretty good value considering they are wickedly and dangerously STRONG. I do however wish they were included on the happy hour. Servers are super hipster, a bit intimidating, and certainly not nice, but it somehow works perfectly in this setting. Service is actually minimal, order @ the bar take a number and hope they bring out the right food. Securing a booth in here requires some serious skill, & at times can come close to the level of blood sport. The honey butter and hot sauce add that definite- Spicy/Sweet I love. The biscuits- little and amazin' with honey butter. Food has fallen off. The Fried Chicken Sandwich used to be one of the best in the city but the last two times I went it was strange tasting. My fiancé ordered the key lime pie (which I know is a dumb thing to order), even that had a strange taste to it. Both things were not inedible (and when you pay that much for food you try to justify it by eating it.) but they were not good by any means. Phenomenal fried chicken. Phenomenal fried chicken sandwich. So juicy. breading is just unreal. You might burn your mouth but it's worth it. If you're served at the bar, you may have to wait a long time for your food, and they don't serve you water. This is totally fine unless you're stuck in the back of the bar far away from where the self-serve water is and if the bar is super crowded, like it was when we visited. We definitely waited for over 30 minutes for our food and weren't able to physically make our way over to where the water was. I've been to this place for drinks as well for friend's birthday parties over the years. The outdoor space in the back is fun for parties. My type of spot. Divey, but fun. Cheapish drinks and lots of them. A very loose tiki-theme. A fried chicken centric food menu. Cool people every where. Funny thing is I walked by The Commodore three times before finally finding it. It literally looks like an empty, dilapidated storefront painted entirely in black. No signage, at least none that I could find. Luckily there was a really cool girl who headed inside, so I figured it must be the spot. It was pretty busy on a Sunday evening, and it took a while to grab a booth in the corner. You order food and drinks at the bar, which keeps things nice and simple. I enjoyed: A pint of Pacifico, a couple bottles of High Life, a rum runner cocktail (that was super strong/boozy). A mild chicken sandwich, fries and nachos. Nothing pretentious, just all around delicious. Friendly, fun staff that are especially great if you're there with a couple locals/regulars who know the ins-and-outs of how The Commodore operates. This is a pretty low key restaurant/bar which is tucked away at the corner of Metropolitan Ave. There aren't any signs so it could be questionable to find. I had to come check it out on my way to Manhattan from La Guardia as it was highly recommended by a friend. It's possible to eat at the bar or at a table where the bar does get a bit crowded but would make sense as a solo traveler. I love how they have the sloe gin fizz on their menu which is a drink I never see anywhere these days and they make it right. Their fried chicken is terrific. Hot, juicy and crispy and they have two different hot sauces (one more traditional and one a bit sweeter) which you can alternate between for a flavor explosion. I also think the biscuits are amazing which are perfectly fluffy and are not dry (Wish there was more!) The butter they provide adds a lot of flavor (I think I could taste cinnamon?) but you can definitely tell it's not normal cheap butter. I couldn't find a problem with the chicken or the biscuits so I can do nothing but sing praises! I got the cadillac nachos to go to try later in the evening. Unfortunately a little soggy so I wouldn't be able to rate it properly but they were still good after having a few rounds of drinks that night! read more
