Amazing fun place! Sundays bingo from 4-6. I won a tshirt! The drinks are excellent and super affordable around $12 for a cocktail, the drink I got was so refreshing and delicious. I also got the catfish po boy which was piled high. The catfish was so good and flavorful. There was slaw and pickles on it as well and the tots had a Cajun seasoning to them. Everything was fried perfectly, i did not feel gross after at all. It was a huge serving and tasted so fresh and delicious. Bartenders and staff are so nice and welcoming. I wish I lived in Brooklyn! If you're in the mood for a stick to your bones burger and fries with that pint, this is the neighborhood spot for you. Their tequila selection was limited, but they did carry a decent Madre mezcal that "smoked" the spicy mayo fries from my palette. The place is surprisingly big - the back area has pool and a whole outdoor area. Since it was Monday, the back area was dead, but the front had a steady enough crowd, keeping the place always a little more than half full. Very casual vibe, maybe a little distracted service at times, but really friendly. We ordered the crawfish Mac and cheese, crawburger, and the catfish po boy. All were good! Ventured away from WB to give this place a try. We ended up getting a beer(they ran out of my first choice,) a cocktail, and a few dishes. The Big Easy Tofu Po'Boy was actually better than I expected, and the bread it was served on was really good. I've always liked heavy woods and thought their food was pretty good (best tots in all the land!) But they just revamped their menu and it's now even better and deserves some kudos for that. The fried chicken sando was always a mainstay for me but they updated the breading to be a bit spicier and it sticks to the chicken much more effectively. The chicken itself is also juicier. It's now graduated from an ole faithful to one of my favorite chicken sandwiches in the area. Now they also have an amazing new dipping sauce called hot garlic Mayo. What is it? Unsure. It tastes a bit like a remoulade and has tons of flavor. It is amazing on the chicken sandwich and also... on tots. Did I mention the tots? They have some kind of Cajun spicing on them that really makes them amazing. Ive also tried the veggie Mac. I thought it was ok but I also was deathly Ill and I hear the crawfish mac is amazing. All in all Heavy Woods is even better now than it was. The drinks and bartenders are reliably good. It's a fun spot and I've seen folks post up with a book or come with friends for trivia. For a dive bar, it's solid. But you need to walk in and use your eyes lol it's not the fanciest. but if you want a nice and simple meal and a beer, this is solid. Burger for $10, $4 for tots extra. Chicken sandwich is $15. Beers are like $6 for draft and then a beer shot ranges from $6 - $9. All in all, a very solid place to just hangout, grab some cheap eats, and get drunk really fast. This left us to choose from sandwiches, but no coffee during this time. Now, as of April 1 the place is back with their full menu including drip coffee starting at 11am. Heavy Woods is a chill spot in the Shwick. It has a projector displaying football on Sundays for all the sportz fans, a full bar, high-top table/bar seating in the front, and additional seating in the back of the bar. Great for brunch, which is what my group and I went for. As soon as we sat we were immediately offered a free Coors pitcher since they were sponsoring the game, um...yes, please! After accepting a refreshing pitcher of Colorado cool-aide we ordered. I got a blood maria (tequila) and the boys got beermosas (oj and miller high life (clever)) we were in lust! Let's dive in! For starters, we ordered: deviled eggs (2 orders), crispy pork belly cracklin', cheesy crawfish bread, and crawfish mac n' cheese. Well, everything was so yummy, the crawfish bread was so different, not too fishy, it was on the soupy side, which I enjoyed, lots of flavors, not too overpowering you still get that authentic taste; it all went. The cracklin' well that was crack, it's didn't even stand a chance on the table we devoured it (even dipped it in the crawfish sauce - HW make that a dish please). The deviled eggs were standard not out of this world, but still good. The crawfish mac was a slight disappointment, it wasn't too cheesy at all, which is the whole allure of the dish and the herbed breadcrumbs, were just there; it felt a little incomplete. BTW these are all small portions split between 3 people, some of the dishes are pictured. BRUNCH: I got the dirty hash (potatoes, pork creole sauce, fried eggs, and a biscuit), one person got the crispy catfish po' boy, and another got lucky Lubbock (eggs, chicken fried pork steak, biscuit, sage sausage gravy). My dish was good it had a little bit of everything, but def, not overwhelming, it was actually smaller than I thought, which was fine, since we'd been trying most of the snack menu. The creole sauce was okay not as spicy as I imagined, but overall it was a safe dish. I head the po' boy was delish, but the lucky Lubbock was not enough for my boy, it was the smallest of the three and not the most filling; decent but great. Unfortunately, the biscuits were not hot (temperature) or as flakey as I would have liked. *Overall the portions are smaller than they looked in the pictures, just beware when ordering. We had a great time, we ordered a few rounds of drinks, tried a good bit of their menu, and didn't feel rushed (drinks were on the slow side to come out). I came here for brunch with a few friends on New Years Day. We all started off with a cocktail I can't remember the name of. It was kinda milkshake-y and chunky, pretty weak, but it was alright. We also got 2 hurricane buckets for the table and they were $20/each but it was straight up buckets of ice and a disgrace of a drink for that price. Saturday brunch was busy, but a steady flow so getting a seat didn't take long. Staff here are ABSOLUTELY PLEASANT. Fellow diners could be a bit less entitled, but the staff brush it off with big smiles and warm hearts. We went with the Angry Hippy, Hoppin' John, and the Chicken Biscuit. Everything was tasty! The shiitake gravy on the Angry Hippy is BOMB and their grits are heart warming. The Hoppin' John was well seasoned. Stumbled upon this GEM while looking for a place to watch the LSU game last night. Little did I know this is a Louisiana bar. No signage outside or huge noticeable presence but the Fleur de lis let me know I was in Cajun country. Total BONUS was that they had the game on WITH SOUND in the back room on a huge projector!!! They also do this for Saints games, I've been told. The bartenders are extremely friendly and attentive. And I, of course, being the good Southern girl I am, asked everyone around me about the food. Two girls I met watching the game suggested the poboys were really good. The gentleman next to me said he didn't enjoy the jambalaya. The bartender- overhearing this conversation decided to bring me some to try- FOR FREE. I was blown away by the kindness and concern over how one feels about the food. And honestly, it was pretty good. It had the right texture and the trinity of foods we use to cook. I would definitely have it again. I will say this, the menu is Cajun inspired. The owners spent time in Louisiana and love the city and it shows in the hospitality and feel of the bar. I came in on a double date to Heavy Woods and ordered a biscuit while we waited for our friends. I could tell it was made fresh, it had a slight crunch on the outside but was perfectly flaky in the middle. Once our friends arrived I ordered a hurricane sans cinnamon and I definitely felt festive with the glass it was served in giving me all the pineapple/summer vibes. It was refreshing yet packed a punch! Our server informed us that the special of the night was the soft shell crab sandwich served with lettuce, tomato, mayo on a bun with a side of chips, I was all for it and ordered it for dinner. The crab was delicious and soft, though I did feel it was slightly greasier than I would have preferred. My friends ordered the catfish po boy and the chicken biscuit. The chicken biscuit should definitely be placed in the small plates category rather than the big plates on the menu as it was very small, though my SO did rave it was savory. My other friend is a big fan of the catfish po boy and mentioned she's had it several times, and is her go-to order. We opted out of dessert but had a great time at Heavy Woods. The service was great and we were approached often to ensure everything came out correctly, I'd definitely recommend trying the biscuit to anyone that comes here! I don't think the owners have ever actually eaten cajun food because it tastes like they just dumped McCormick cajun spice on everything. I've tried this place several times, I've had the gumbo, jambalaya, cajun burger, mac and cheese and my least favorite was the Mardi Gras special crawfish po'boy, it was dry and boring. I've been to New Orleans many times and this food is a watered down version of the real thing. Also FYI playing 80's music for a Mardi Gras themed party is not very festive. I am giving this place a 3 stars because the food ins't terrible it just isn't cajun and they do have Purple Haze on tap, so there's that. read more
