Have had the pleasure of dining at La Cantine a few times now and can definitely say I have never been disappointed by anything ordered. The menu changes constantly and you can find the latest menu on their Instagram stories which they update daily. As a rule of thumb, plan to get dessert. The dark chocolate tiramisu slice we were served was healthy in size, rich in flavor and perfect to split between the two of us. I tend to order 3 dishes (one protein and two side dishes) when coming in with a friend. The dishes are always a reminder of how simple ingredients can be combined to create fantastic flavors. As a note, the Chicken Cutlet was perfectly crisp and now I feel inclined to stop in for lunch and grab a sandwich. The wines are definitely selected by someone who has a preference for funky I almost want to say musky flavors. Never really found something there that I liked which is the only drawback to this place. Get a reservation, this place can be packed very quickly. Very disappointed with this spot and was rudely accused of not paying the bill! Came here extremely excited to try out their birthday cake tiramisu and check out the restaurant in general since it had been on my list for a while. While the place is pretty cute aesthetically, the service was awful. I had made a reservation since that's what's recommended by the establishment and everyone we interacted with was pretty unpleasant. In addition, the cake tasted old and so freezer burnt that we had one bite and discarded the rest. Nothing about it was appealing. Worst of all no one seemed to want to wait on us so we spent the whole time trying to flag someone down so we left cash on the table for everything and left. Dispute all this we decided to still tip 30% since our order was so small and we wanted to be courteous. 15 mins later I get an extremely rude phone call from the restaurant immediately accusing me of leaving without paying! They didn't even have the decency to check the table without immediately assuming and being unbelievable disrespectful. Still in disbelief about the entire experience, would not recommend this establishment to anyone. read more

A few years ago, I got takeout from here and got the best French dip sandwich of my life. Turns out it was a special, and I've been missing it dearly ever since. I returned this weekend with a friend to try some of their other sandwiches and had a lovely meal. The staff are kind and accommodating and they have plenty of nice outdoor seating, it's a little more crowded inside. The toasted fennel ranch chicken cutlet was flavorful, crispy, and the bread was notably good. I liked the homemade ranch on there and the fennel flavor really came through. The peach cube was a yummy end to the meal, light not terribly sweet. We want to come back for dinner, apparently the nighttime desserts are epic! read more

Friendly staff, super casual spot (no table service, you order at the counter, get a number and sit where you please). Food does take a bit to come out when it's busy but it's chill. There's a couple tables on the literal sidewalk for outdoor dining (which I appreciate because there's not much seating indoors and it does get cramped). They have so many amazing specials on random days of the week which keeps me on my toes and alas I do miss out 99% of the time but I had the pleasure of trying one of their mac cheese patty sandwiches with cauliflower cutlet and it was great. Expensive but great. I also really really appreciate that anything can be made vegetarian. You always have the choice between a chicken cutlet and a cauliflower cutlet. A cheeky French name appears to be in vogue these days. While Le Dive and Le French Diner undersell the scope of their ambitions, La Cantine is arguably in fact a canteen - albeit a very good one. I tried the pesto egg cheese sandwich, which was the perfect snack after a bike ride on a sunny day. The scrambled eggs were perfectly soft, and no one's complaining about the generous layer of mayo on the brioche. It gets popping here, so be prepared to wait 45 minutes+ on a busy day. read more

This is one of my favorite places to get lunch. I love their iced lavender latte with whole milk. The lavender syrup is delicious and made in house, so that's probably what makes this place special. Any place that that's the time to make their own syrup is five stars in my book. They also have specials that change each week, so far haven't had a sandwich from the specials I didn't like. They always make them with a lot of different toppings and there's lots of variety when it comes to the sandwiches. I'd rate La Cantine four and a half stars. I highly recommend the desserts! We shared the peanut brownie and the chocolate bread pudding. Both were outstanding. Both had a moist consistency. Brownie was on the slightly cakey side but still plenty fudgy with same jam pockets too. I'd definitely return for both and a tall glass of milk. After dessert, we charged a chicken cutlet sandwich on a baguette. Cutlet was ultra thin. Sandwich had lettuce, cucumbers, and dressing. Simple, home style sandwich. Cute, cozy dining area (pretty small so make a reservation), friendly staff, and seasonal constantly rotating menu. The chicken I got was moist and well seasoned but the real highlight was the dessert featuring rhubarb which I look forward to all year as it is only briefly in season. It's worth going just to try the desserts. The menu is super chefy and full of interesting options that use new and old techniques, classic flavors with a twist, like cacio e pepe tapioca balls. First time visit for early lunch at this cozy restaurant in Brooklyn. My wife and I were warmly greeted by the entire team - Hannah, Laken, Sara, and Akeem. We decided to try a variety of their delicious offerings: Irish Soda Bread with Butter and Jam (made in-house for St. Patrick's Day), Poblano Egg & Cheese on Croissant, Chicken Cutlet Caesar Sandwich off their "Daily Specials" menu, and the "don't miss" Crispy Potatoes with Garlic Aioli! So flavorful, nice portions, and terrific service!! Fighting the gate keeping urge to not leave a review because I love love love this place -- but finally finishing this review because I've moved out of the neighborhood. The food is here is INCREDIBLE. The best part is that there are DAILY specials - and not just 1 or 2 items, its like 10-20 unique items everyday. This includes sandwiches (breakfast and lunch), baked goods, salads. There are truly some creative geniuses that craft this menu because it is always unique and interesting combinations, not to mention actually delicious. I have NEVER had a bad meal here, it just varies between good and great (with it being great most of the time). And even there regular menu is filled with delicious options. Its hard to make recommendations because I almost always order from the specials. The regular breakfast sandwich is delicious, and they usually have a banana chocolate bread pudding baked good that is incredible. The coffee also is always delicious. Also the chicken cutlet sandwiches are always super tasty. Sandwich size can vary, never super small, but some are bigger and could be potentially shared. The only things I think are worth skipping are the potatoes and the hot sauce. This place can definitely get crowded and have a line during peak weekend cafe times - there is both indoor and outdoor seating. Worst case if its full you can always just walk 5-10min to Maria Hernandez park. Service can also be slow -- especially when its busy, though frankly even when its not, I wouldnt come here if youre in a super rush. Also everyone that works here is very cool, very bushwick, nobody is mean or anything, but maybe varying levels of engagement haha. The food is decent, priced a little higher because of location. The service I can't stress enough how garbage it is... Michael in particular complained of not being tipped appropriately. I left a 15% for horrible service. Why am I getting looked at like I'm asking for the near impossible of a new set of silverware and napkins when the ones I have are dirty. La Cantine is a GORGEOUS restaurant with great food. They have a decent amount of inside and outside tables available. Be sure to to directly to the register to order! I can't lie though, I was a little hungry after which isn't a great sign. My personal preference will always be that a sandwich come with some kind of side, or else it's not a value buy. In this case, my boyfriend and I both got poblano sandwiches with a side of potatoes to share. I'd recommend adding bacon or sausage to the sandwich. We also got two iced cappuccinos which were SO good. The milk was extra frothy which I love. It was just a bit expensive for breakfast for two IMO. I came across La Cantine on IG, honestly no clue how but so glad I did. It's a cute little cafe in a quiet part of Bushwick. It was so charming, I almost felt I was somewhere else and not in Brooklyn. It was a little pricey but everything was delicious. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Cutlet sandwich that was on special which had pickles, shallots and a slightly spicy but not really mayo on a brioche bun. I ate part of the sandwich with the bun and then kind of picked at the rest. I also got an order of the roasted fingerling potatoes which came with a side of mayo like you would find in France. I also got an Arnold Palmer to drink. I read that the chocolate chip cookies were really good so I ordered two to go. While waiting for my food I took a little bite-it was so good. It must be really popular because every table inside was taken and people were sitting outside too even though it was humid and hot. My sandwich was delicious, I definitely would order one of them again (they had a few different ones on the menu). The potatoes were ok-wish I had more actual potatoes than crispy skins. Frankly, I don't know why I haven't reviewed La Cantine yet. It's far and away one of my favorite spots in the city. And if anyone says otherwise, I'm so emotionally attached to La Cantine at this point that I WILL fight them. Aesthetics are 1000/10. It's a gorgeous, small spot with immaculate lighting and decor. If I had to pick one detail about them that encapsulates their vibe, it's probably that they serve their coffees one handmade mugs by local ceramicists. Everything is made with so much care and love, and it's served that way too. La Cantine is where I go to celebrate, but it's also where I go when I have a bad day. There's nothing a Jamon e beurre sandwich on a perfect baguette with lil cornichons can't cure! It's not cheap, but it is basically half a baguette. And while prepared so simply, the ingredients are so high quality that it just feels really special. Their brekky sandwiches have the softest scrambled eggs and I love the addition of poblano for the vegetarians. When you want to splurge get their potatoes with garlic aioli. Yet again, simple but just incredible. Speaking of special, their SPECIALS! They really mix things up and are always doing something different. In the spring they have a ramp butter sandwich with comte, radicchio, cornichons, ramp butter and your choice of protein on a baguette (I believe their breads are from Balthazar). It's honestly something I look forward to every year. They have incredible beverages like their maple chai and are very ok with adjusting sweetness and amount of milk to your preferences. Then in the evenings they turn into a beautiful natural wine bar called Sunsets. If you don't get the tapioca and cheese croquettes, you're missing out. They also fold seasonal ingredients into their menu at Sunsets. Often there is a lasagna in the rotation that rivals the best in the city. Tons of layers of fresh pasta, with the best seasonal ingredients they can find. All in all, La Cantine is a very special place. I can't think of a spot that 1) has better vibes and 2) pays such attention and care to their food. There's a real sense of creativity and love for food in that kitchen that you absolutely must see to believe. It really holds a special place in my heart! read more
