Alright Carvery. I see you. I hosted our department lunch here today and i would totally give them a 5 stars. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were the only table. The waitress served our table with ease. There were 8 of us. I let her know that we only have 1 hour for lunch. Not only the kitchen delivered our food with ease. They were delicious. The cod in my fish and chip were so tender. There were 0 complaints from the 8 of us. Everyone commented the food was good. Yes. We will be back! Thank you very much!

Walking around DTLB we come across places that we bookmark for "next time" and this was one of those. Friends were visiting, so I made a reservation and hoped for the best. Well, this exceeded my expectations. We had a 6pm reservation, so we beat the rush and had a great table. Cheers to their Happy Hour! The hostess doubled as the bartender and assisted with serving as well. She was amazing. I can't remember everything we ordered, but here are a few that I do...Spinach & Artichoke Dip ($8), Truffle Mac & Cheese ($15), French Onion Soup ($9), Butcher's Block Meat Sampler ($120), Fish & Chips ($18). Dinner was delicious, service was great, and a good time was had by all!

This place has been like a hidden gem for me. The first time we came during happy hour and had a Manhattan and a burger, both delicious and worth the price. We went last weekend to check out the holiday cocktail menu, and it did not disappoint. My favorite was the ginger bread martini but the mulled wine was also really nice. Additionally they set the mood with fake snow right outside. Overall I've been impressed with the quality of food and drink there, and plan to come back soon.

I finally made it to this place after living in DTLB for several years now. A beautiful restaurant with wonderful romantic looking booths, a nice U-shaped bar, and good lighting I get the feeling it's trying to define itself. We were greeted at the door by a young woman who seated us at the bar as we requested. She quickly brought water and then disappeared for a few minutes. A middle-aged man was standing at the far end of the bar as if he were a bartender and talking to two people. He never approached us and we thought 'lousy bartender'. Our young lady reappeared to take our drink order and explained that she was both the bartender and server at the moment; that the guy was the owner. Well, Lauren, was great but the owner needs to up his game. He could have strolled over to us, introduced himself, and explained that Lauren would be right back. The place was fairly empty at 5:30 on a soggy Friday night; and to be honest, it always appears 'quiet' from the outside. Regardless we inspected the Happy Hour menu but were not delighted. I would give this place a 4 normally, because of this. I get it that some restaurants just knock a few bucks off their drink categories and offer a few appetizers. So I would say that The Carvery's Happy Hour is nothing to beat the door down for. $3 off a $16 cocktail or glass of wine isn't going to bring a significant happy hour crowd, but I'm guessing management knows that as the Carvery owner owns a few adjoining places. Well, Lauren made us some good Bulleit Manhattans which was the bar bourbon. Skipped the $18 upgrade. We ordered the Spinach/Artichoke dip from the Happy Hour specials and were delighted at it's creaminess but not heaviness. We actually ordered another one as we later split a Fish and Chips (good crispy fries and the fish is light but is sparse); Brussel Sprouts which were good and served with a hummus like drizzle. The objective here is to have a boutique, upscale restaurant with good food and The Carvery achieves this objective; however, if it doesn't do a little something like a better happy hour, it doesn't seem to get enough traffic. Restrooms on the 2nd floor (yes there's an elevator) with a room that overlooks the restaurant and bar below. On the 3rd floor is a private venue room, which looks intriguing. Yes, I'll be back. Lauren is marvelous. She knows DTLB well, offers great service, and makes good drinks. Kudos to her. Live music by Lexi Algar was starting but we were off.

We came in on a Monday night and it was empty which kind of concerned us but we went ahead and tried it anyways, because of that I can't really speak to the ambiance cause I'm not sure if it's usually that empty. The service wasn't bad. The wedge salad was very fresh and the poblano mashed potatoes are a must try.

We tried the $85 prix fixed dinner menu for Valentine's Day, which came with an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The decor was very cozy and intimate, and they also had live music. Service was also great and they timed the courses perfectly. For the appetizers, the French onion soup came with a perfectly gooey cheesy, but the winter salad was too oily and the apples could have been cut into smaller pieces. I ordered the chimmichuri steak and it was cooked well, but I wish they used a different type of fries, as I prefer a crispier thinner fry. The butter cake was by far the best thing we had, the combination of textures and rich flavors was delicious, especially with the vanilla ice cream. Overall this was a great date night location!

I do want to start off by thanking the Carvery for taking a party of 21 on a Saturday about a week and a half in advance. My partner really wanted prime rib for his birthday but we could not find somewhere that would take our party. They have a nice set up outside with heat laps that they can seat big parties at one long table set up. There was live music playing inside and our waiter, Trevor, was really great. There were some hiccups, that I'll get to, but they never gave us a hard time for any of the requests we made regarding the mishaps. As I mentioned, we came for prime rib and it being called the carvery, we didn't think there would be an issue but they ended up running out of prime rib. Luckily, the birthday boy plus a couple others were able to order it, but many of us had hoped to order it as well. Next, several dishes came out cold, include birthday boy's prime rib. Some side dishes were cold and the French onion soup. We realized later that it looked like the food was coming from the bar, Shannon's, next door so it's possible the food was sitting and/or got cold during its travel to the restaurant. I ordered the filet mignon medium rare, but it was more medium and not very tender. I did like the poblano mashed potatoes! I also had a yummy Malbec to go with my meal. Others did really enjoy the fried chicken and fish and chips. Another plus was that happy hour is every day so we had 30 minutes to get some happy hour food and drinks (it's until 7pm). Thank you, The Carvery, for dealing with our large party! Maybe some things to improve in the kitchen, but we were glad to all be together.

Oh my goodness! Hands down have to return to The Carvery. I did not unfortunately get to experience the live band but the music for a Thursday night was throwing it way back. My type of vibe. Our waitress was the sweetest and the bartender as well. All in all a good birthday experience with my girlfriend. Super chill vibe, upscale but also in the heart of downtown Long Beach. It was not packed at all and I was the last guest. They did not rush us at all. Gosh! Almost forgot to mention how great the food was! We ordered the affordable French onion soup and I have to say was super delicious and heart warming. We also ordered the bistro Mac and cheese with shrimp which is to die for! Their drinks were also delicious. You must try the pineapple daiquiri.

And this one time I was there alone with another, no other patrons just staff members walking around from time to time. We stole the moment to dance under the Long Beach sky, just the two of us as a famous Christina Perrio song gently wafted in the night breeze. At another separate time, I was at the Los Angeles County Fair with another. We rode the ferris wheel at such a time where our gondola stopped at the top just as the sun set. The moment was nothing but beautiful and life affirming because the sinking of the sun's light was like a real life video of nature happening in front of us, unburdened by static or data stall. We witnessed nature resting, and I feel, that it was a kin to a beauty falling into a gentle sleep. These two instances have a common factor: momentary bliss arrived to bless an experience because the environment supported discovery of unplanned joy. That is what I associate with the Wicked Wolf, and this time the joy arrived eventually because when my Mom and I arrived to their high tea on Mother's Day the experienced seem like it would land nowhere good. Truth be told, my mom and I arrived 15 minutes early and there was no host in the stand and the place was empty except for a foursome. The energy felt lacked luster. One or two minutes after, the bartender informed us that we were early and the host would come soon. We sat in an available sofa for two, a loveseat persay. This gave us an opportunity to admire the decor that transported us to a storybook forest where good fairies reside, not like swamp creatures and trolls with malevolent fangs and dragon green eyes. I especially loved the large roses in the ceiling. To set the stage, the black ceiling had vines hanging from it, and the few roses were pops of crimson red displayed above. These were wonderful accents to the central mural of the joint that invited the viewer within deeper into the fairy forest where a light shone on an unseen meadow. The place had the decorations and general environment to be a lavender fairy's lounge, but, it did not fully work as a team room. For instance, my mom and I were sat in another lover's couch. Initially, I did not want to sit here because we were given circular tray sets. So imagine being told to sit in a couch, and each of us would get a tv tray. So I was left to wonder if we were going to be served tea in Belle's living room or if were going to watch a flick as we ate pollo loco bowl? But then as I settled into the tranquility of the moment, saw more people come and find their seat or couch, and as the serviced picked-up I realized that this was high tea in a place that had taken disjointed beauty and tackied it together for a patched tea experience that worked well. It was like the experienced was blessed and allowed by the same spirit that brought forth Raggedy Ann. For instance, the pictures show these pretty violet petaled tea cups and matching plates. This pairing was dainty and perfect for a tea party happening under pink veils. But then the sugar cubes came in a hedgehog shaped holder which was just as precious as seeing a piglet in a carriage built for one. Then the cream carrier was in the shape of a milk carton. I wondered where the missing child portrait was? The pastry plate was in the shape of a tropical flower like the ones scattered all over Hawaii. It belonged in a beautiful lei. Each of these elements was cute in its own delicate and whimsical way but together they made an eclectic hodgepodge, not a coherent tea set. And in this asymmetry laid the glitter of their error. The host also brought these clip on dainty hats that were perfect touches for make believe tea party. He carried them around in their original packing, including the box they came in. Not exactly the tailor of the queen, offering hats to the villagers as a gift from her to them, but still the effort magnified the moment. The tea food was the worst stumble that Red took as she was being chased by the Wicked Wolf. To begin with the end analysis, the tea offerings in general were standard, and not bites fit for a princess and her wedding court. For instance, the cream cheese and cucumber sandwich was just that---- a cucumber and cream cheese sandwich. I detected no effort to make it more than that. The blueberry scone was solid, nothing to skip through a meadow about. But once you added the jam of the table to the scone it was much easier to enjoy. I also had a madeline that was fluffy in the center but could have been purchased maybe at Costco. I had a Macaron and same thing, delicious but I have had something similar before and I suspected that it did not come from a place afloat with Parisian affairs. The best part of the tiers was this puff like thing that had like a Concha texture and design at the top. It was a sweet filled bite that was fit for a man made of muffin.

When we got there, I felt that the decorations and drinks felt a bit gimmicky, with random fairy tale-esque elements like a throne and massive red roses. I thought it would have been very cool to see Easter eggs and more intentionality bringing the atmosphere together. Since it was an hour before closing, we didn't plan to stay very long. The two people working at the bar were both unwelcoming and seemed upset that we were there (there were other people at the bar, including people who arrived later in the night than us). We paid for our drinks, which cost over $40 for 2 drinks with tip. My cocktail was $17 and came in a glass barely bigger than a shot glass. We left around the time they were calling for last call. I can understand not wanting stragglers who prevent the bartenders from closing late, but I would have much preferred being turned away at the door rather than paying and tipping for an overall unpleasant experience.

I was excited to see on the menu that they were serving Kinobi gin from Kyoto. I discovered this gin on a trip to Kyoto have since bought it regularly. To my surprise, when I saw the bartenders making the drinks they were using Gray Whale. Gray Whale is fine, but it's not in the same league at Kinobi. I realize Kinobi can be hard to find at times but If there's a substitution like that, the server should say something when you order the drink or if it's a recipe change, the menu should be updated. Speaking of service, that's what really brought me to write this re view. Before we even ordered we were told that we would only have 90 minutes. That honestly killed the vibe and made us feel rushed. Like the OpenTable confirmation even said we'd have two hours. And for tge rest of our time there our server pretty much ignored us. They forgot some of the food we ordered and shoved the check in our face when they wanted us to leave. I'm guessing they were stretched too thin? I think they need to hire another person to be a server or maybe get an extra bartender and have them wait on the people at the bar. At a bar like this service is everything. Being a Japanese themed bar you'd think they would try to copy the level of service you'd have in Japan. I just moved to the neighborhood and probably won't return after our experience.

Rob Fontana was performing tonight, and his music was so good I found myself time‑traveling back to the good old days. Every song hit, Rob. Good job! SERVICE Our server, Nia, was a star. Attentive, sharp memory, and smooth service all the way through. Zero notes. FOOD The menu is small, so if you show up ravenous, pace yourself or plan to Uber home after a cocktail‑heavy evening. I'm allergic to cheese, so I had to double‑check ingredients, but the Mushroom Flatbread was outstanding, flavor was superb and the best part was they did not skimp on the mushrooms! A+ for that. I also tried the Prosciutto di Parma with melon, which is a strange combo for a California girl... but hey, I never said I wasn't a weirdo. Drinks are not my thing since I enjoy company without alcohol's help, so I can't help you with that. DATE‑WORTHY OR NOT? Absolutely. Alter Ego gets a double thumbs‑up from me and a strong recommendation for your next Silver Singles date. It's easy to find, the seating is comfortable (even for those of us with backs that like to complain), and they even offer tube pillows for extra support. Tell me that's not romance.

Overall, I'm so glad this is the place we chose to meet at! On a Wednesday night we were able to walk in and had no trouble getting a table for 4. The aesthetic is the standout feature of the place. The main bar is beautifully decorated and there are spacious booths to eat at as well. My favorite part was the two additional "secret" bar areas! While sitting in the main bar area you would have no idea there are additional rooms. Exploring the other rooms was a fun, unique part of the visit. The drinks were photo worthy as well as tasted great. The bar tender was attentive and adjusted my drink based on how much sweetness I like. The lychee margarita was my favorite because they light it up table side for a fun presentation! The food tasted great and was very affordable priced! Our group ordered multiple items and shared them family style, which seems to be a common approach here. The shrimp fried rice was delicious and my favorite food item. One order was plenty to share between 4 people. Per our server's request, we also tried the cucumber salad which was really refreshing and a great side. I tried the popcorn chicken but honestly they packed a kick and were too spicy for me, so be warned. In sum, the service, food, drinks, and ambiance were great and I will definitely be back!

Absolutely delicious food at reasonable prices. Probably the best fried rice and edamame I've ever…read morehad. Service was decent, didn't get quite as much attention as I would have ordered more food had someone stopped by faster. It's a really small location so it's a little bizarre that service is a bit on the slow side. That said, everything else was fantastic so it's a small sin as such things go. Overwhelmingly recommend this place, just maybe order a lot up-front so you don't end up waiting around for more. It also has 2 speakeasys attached to the "main" restaraunt, but book early as those spots are even harder to get into.

False Advertising and Total Failure of a "Speakeasy"…read more This place should not call itself a speakeasy. According to their website, they are strict about dress code, reservations, and no large parties. None of that was enforced. People arrived wearing sports clothes, tennis shoes, and flip-flops, and a group of more than 10 people was allowed in. That group was loud, drunk, and screaming, completely destroying any speakeasy ambiance. We had a reservation booked one week in advance for 2 tables of six, yet by 8:30 pm, we were told no food was available, despite the bar being almost empty. The water was already on the table when we arrived and tasted strongly of chlorine, with no ice. The waitress was clearly new, untrained, and unprepared. She did not know the menu, didn't know how to take an order properly, and provided no guidance whatsoever. There was one bartender Ricardo, who took over an hour to prepare cocktails and showed no sense of urgency or care. The dramatic cocktail descriptions sounded impressive, but the drinks did not match the descriptions at all. Because of the delays, we were never even able to properly toast or celebrate our friend. The charcuterie board took forever and arrived with an absurd amount of cheese and only six pieces of bread. To make things worse, part of the food we ordered never arrived at all. The live jazz band advertised and promised never showed up. When asked, the staff responded with: "I don't know, they were supposed to be here. I don't have their phone number." That level of disorganization is unacceptable. At the end of the night, we were shocked to receive a check close to $600 for two tables, despite each person only having one cocktail and shared food. The bartender, Ricardo, approached us and said: "Well, sorry, we really tried tonight! It wasn't the best, but we tried." Honestly, that comment made the experience even more frustrating. I can't imagine how bad it would have been if they hadn't "tried."That statement perfectly summarizes the problem -- trying is not enough when everything fails. I would not recommend this place for a speakeasy experience. This is not a speakeasy. It's a poorly run bar hiding behind a concept it does not deliver. Do not recommend.

I give it a 1 because 0 was not an option. Absolute disaster. Avoid this place at all costs. What…read morewas supposed to be a classy night celebrating a 50th birthday turned into a complete nightmare. This is not a speakeasy, it's a tiny, rundown bar pretending to be something it's not. The staff was inexperienced, dismissive, and unprofessional. Drinks were outrageously overpriced and took forever to arrive. The food was a joke, a $60 charcuterie board made up of cheap grocery store cheese, ham, and crackers that didn't come close to justifying the price. We were served warm water that tasted like chlorine, and the response from staff was literally "I don't know, I just work here." At one point both waitresses vanished, leaving the bartender overwhelmed and everything grinding to a halt. The live jazz band they advertise never showed up, and staff had no explanation or contact info. The so-called dress code was completely ignored, with groups in jeans and sneakers flooding in, turning the place loud, chaotic, and classless. This place delivers nothing it promises. It's not a speakeasy, it's a poorly run bar that shouldn't be in business. Strongly do not recommend, and honestly, I want my money back.
