Tried this place for the first time with a friend of mine on Saturday. First off, as much as they do take card, there is a $15 limit first before being allowed to use it. Otherwise, make sure you have cash handy. The food itself however is pretty good. The popcorn chicken was perfectly breaded and not overly salty. The seasoning is on the chicken itself as opposed to the outer coating which isn't bad. The chicken pieces are on the fatty side but it's still pretty good. I loved the marinated beancurd and egg as well as the cabbage. White rice is white rice. The minced pork on top is alright but there's not a whole lot of flavor to it. That could probably have more seasoning to it. My friend who ordered the fried chicken said it was good at the time but it caused an upset stomach by the middle of night after our dinner probably due to the amount of oil used on it. However, that said, it's a solid joint for food if you're in the mood for a Taiwanese rice bento. Personally food quality wise, I might prefer Wehouse better which is just down the street from the plaza Bento Box is in. Drink wise, well, the meal came with a drink which was a nice surprise. I haven't tried the other drinks but the passion fruit tea with rainbow jelly was super delicious and refreshing given the super heat wave that's taken over as of late. So that's a 5/5 right there. I got the milk tea with my bento box and it was really watered down. My boyfriend got the fruit tea and it was also very light in flavor. I was in the area so popped in to check it out. As of July 2022, they have 2 tables with seating, about 5 - 6 seats each. The lady is very friendly and nice and reminds me of bento shops in Taiwan. I got the fried pork chop bento and milk tea combo. It was 17.50 total. Fried Pork Chop Bento--8/10 The portion size of the bento was huge. Definitely very filling. The pork chop is very crispy, but a little thin. The rice with braised pork on it was good, but it didn't quite "hit the spot" since some of the meat tended to be on the dry side.The stewed egg was very flavorful. Chicken Meets Rice waaaaaay better *Pork feet bento - yes, I was born in the Year of the Pig so cannibalistic thoughts arise, but who cares, I love pig feet and they make it well here. Lots of knuckles to navigate with your teeth, but the flavors are impeccable. Each bento box comes with a brown tea egg, small 'salad', which is really just shreds of iceberg lettuce, and rice with ground pork/veggie - and a small sample of stewed (hard) tofu. There's a lot to unpack here, and for $13.99 each it seems like a pretty fair deal. One big comment to management - please please please consolidate your menus into a single, simple, easy-to-read menu. Great place for a simple meal with lots of variety! Lots of options and street food type things. The bento box meal came with a drink and we got the passionfruit tea which was really artificial and sweet in my opinion. It's a little pricey in my opinion for what it is and since the credit card minimum is $15 you end up having to get at least 2 things. We also got the beef roll which was nothing special and would probably skip given it's an extra $5 on top of the side price or something. The girl helping us was really patient and friendly. First of all, this place isn't too close, but it had good reviews so we headed over. It's a tiny place, no indoor eating as of now for Covid (May 2021), and no outdoor eating. So, it's a completely to-go place until things open up. We ordered one bento box as it was a snack, and we're glad we didn't order two. Wow, talk about huge servings. This box was enough to satisfy both of us. They even gave us two eggs, not sure if that's normal or they saw we were sharing the box. The food was so tasty! I've never had taiwanese bento boxes so I was really excited to try it for the first time today. My coworker and I instantly regretted it. I try not to leave bad reviews but this place was just downright disappointing...I'm usually not picky, but I could not tell myself to finish the bento box I got here. We got the fried chicken because we were told it was the most popular. Also, free milk tea with your purchase?! I was ecstatic. Who would say no to that?? I went home, opened the box and saw the pool of oil underneath the chicken. It made the entire filet soggy and inedible. I decided to make the most of it and tried to eat around the batter. After doing so, I saw that there were 3 small pieces of chicken all strung together by the batter. There was such little chicken and it was covered by like 80% batter!! I'm hoping that it would taste better dining in vs take out but I don't know if I could give this place a chance again. I love Taiwanese bento boxes and I really like pork chop bentos. I've come here a few times and I find it is inconsistent. But when done right, the taste is so good! The pork chop when done right is so tender and perfectly fried (once I had it where the pork chop was paper thin and fried to pork jerky levels, it was so disappointing). It is rather filling and comes with a drink in the price. The bento comes with a stewed egg, minced meat rice, a bit of spicy bamboo bits, and cabbage. The beef green onion pancake roll had good parts and mediocre parts I'd say. The green onion pancake tasted great; beef was not bad, but the cucumbers were definitely cut too thickly which affected the taste texture (bites of bland flavor-watery cucumber). Overall though I still enjoy this place and want to try their other dishes. And if you pay with cash over a certain amount they send you a free appetizer on the house. read more

Been trying a few bento box areas as of late. This has more of a homey feel instead of an instagramable place. I walked in and I could smell the stewed flavors if that's a thing. I don't know if there's online ordering so I went to the shop to order. My order was completed relatively quickly in 10 minutes. What I like about this place is the variety of options it has. It's not just the usually fried chicken bento. There's a lot of different bento options and you can even add more sides. I ordered a stewed duck bento. It usually comes with a drink but since I opted out of the drink, they gave me an extra tofu. I also got an extra smoked chicken leg for paying with cash. It comes with cabbage and also some pickled veggies and mixed pork rice. They do accept card here. The size of the bento can easily be considered two meals. I feel like most of the food is on the saltier side tho (duck, tofu, chicken leg, pickled veggies). I would come back here and try some of their other bentos. read more

It's scrupulously decorated and clean, and is what I think of when I hear "mom and pop shop". I opted for the fried chicken and got a mustard greens as a topping replacement, since I fancy the sour taste to balance the savory chicken. It comes with an egg, tofu, cabbage, a broccoli, and choice of milk, green, or black tea with free boba at no additional cost. All of this for $12.99, which I think is a great deal! The fried chicken is delicious and there's chili powder available for you to douse to get a hint of spice. It could be a bit more crispy, but definitely good flavor and seasoning. They were the JS Stewhouse near the Cupertino library and moved to Milpitas Barber Lane now called 'Bento Express' about four-five years ago. I like their non-nonsense approach to Taiwanese home-cooked foods. Presented in Bento style, you can get one main entree and they give you three side dishes. The family works together behind the counter, so that adds to the home-cooking feeling even more. The Hainanese chicken rice bento can rival pricey southeast Asian restaurants' versions, but beware of the chicken bones. I don't know if you could ask for no bones, but you can try. Pork chop bento is my family's favorite. When I went the last time (in April 2021) The price for the bentos is around $11-$13 and if you buy the punch card, you can get free drinks and one extra - 11 meals instead of 10. Update: I went to pick up two bentors and two beef rolls. I also bought a 10+1 punch card. Was a bit taken by the new prices. A bento now costs almost $17.00. I had the Hainan Chicken bento (boned chicken with lots of ginger sauce, but the rice is regular white rice) and a Stew Pork bento. Both were delicious. We took home the been rolls and ate the next morning as breakfast. They are very delicious! read more

Cute little Chinese / Taiwanese shop for bentos or noodle soup; locally and family run (always a bonus point for me). I love to support small businesses in my area (when I went the mom and son duo were working the front counter). I stopped by this place on recommendation from a friend. During COVID, they don't have dining seating sadly, but hopefully there will be more options to dine-in the future. I got the beef noodle soup (fyi, it's a little spicy and has a kick to it!) and the Hainan Chicken Bento. The bento comes with a drink as well which is a nice addition. We got the 25% sweetness which was actually not very sweet at all (the way I like it, lol). Food was a bit saltier than my ideal flavor but I think all store bought food is usually salty in general. I liked the ginger sauce on their Hainan Chicken; I went to Chicken Meets Rice on another recommendation but their ginger sauce was way too sweet. Chicken Meets Rice chicken is softer / more tender if you like the softer style chicken. Definitely stop by if you're in the area :), especially if you like Taiwanese food. The food was tasty, not expensive, good portion size, and the family is nice. They let us know our food would be done in 15 mins because the noodle soup takes a little longer and it was finished on time. I do agree w/ another reviewer that there are a few menu's so it can be a little confusing where to look. Pro tip: they also sell frozen dumplings, potstickers, and chive pockets but they run out so call ahead if you want to get some homemade dumplings :). read more

One of my favorite spots to grab a quick and yummy taiwanese bento box. Miss roaming around Taiwan eating all the delicious street foods - but happy we have spots like this here to fill some of my voids! Their bento boxes are all $13.99 and includes an entree of choice, ground pork rice, veggies, stewed egg, spicy pickled radish, and stewed tofu (a lil bit of all my favs) PLUS it also comes with a side of free drink. My go to is the fried chicken bento and husband decided to try their fish filet for the first time. We also got their milk tea and passion fruit drink. Everything was delicious but the highlight is definitely the fried chicken :D I've also tried their taiwanese beef noodle soup pre-covid and that was pretty good as well. I thought I try this place out for their stewed pork bento box. I like the side items of blanched cabbage, pickled vegetables and ground pork over rice. The stewed pork belly and egg were ok. The fat was juicy and tasty but the meat was tough. The portion size was big which I wasn't able to finish it in the same day. I had portions of it for lunch and dinner. A drink came included with the bento box. I chose the passion fruit and it was ok as well. I gave it an average for this meal. This is our new to-go place for take-out bento boxes! Now I would go here more than Shihlin to support local business--and I do like their bento boxes better. Here are my reasonings: 1) Yummy meat. Their frying is not as consistently clean as Shihlin, so sometimes there is a pond of oil at the bottom of the slot, but the meat is marinated much better and taste better. But if you are looking for more crunchiness, go to Shihlin; 2) Yummy vegetables, I love their cabbages, much better than most bento-box places where they give you a couple pieces of sad broccoli, here the vegetable amount is solid and tastes actually good. 3) Variety of food. There are so many little things in their bento boxes that are hard to resist, a tea egg, a piece of tofu, marinated grounded pork on top of rice, pickles... 4) Free drink. Love their passion fruit tea! We have tried a few types and so far our favorites are the fried chicken, popcorn chicken and fried fish. But the other ones taste good as well. Went to this place with a friend from mainland China and we arrived at the same time as a group from Taiwan. The owner was as chilly as a polar bear's toenails to us, though not outright rude. Meanwhile, she treated the Taiwanese group like royalty. That Taiwanese group was actually super polite and even let us order first, but the owner told us not to block the way--even though there was barely any room to stand! If it weren't for the Taiwanese group's VIP treatment, we might have thought frosty service was just the house specialty. Instead, it left a bad taste in our mouths. read more

We got the smoked chicken, bamboo sidedish, and porkbelly. if youre from taiwan, my gf said it tastes like what she would get there(home). Now i got the smoked chicken, because to me it looked like rotisserie chicken and i lovvvve rotisserie chicken. Let me tell you it tastes like... smoked chicken. During the Covid-19 SIP, I ran across this in UberEats. I checked them out in Yelp and had high overall reviews (4.5 stars) Never been there so I can't describe its location or restaurant ambiance. For the bento box which included: steam rice, steam vegetables (cabbage and carrots), spicy pickled radish (+/- 2 tbsp); stewed egg (hard boiled), stewed tofu (1 tiny pc) and ground pork (over rice). Each bento comes with free drink from a list of 2-3 teas, too :) 1). Grilled mackerel (Saba) Bento box w/ free milk tea drink Right amount of salt, grilled perfectly, 1 big portions of fish but lots of bones. So not date food. Milk tea was satisfying, but could have had more ice. 5/5 2) Stewed Pork bento box w/ free black tea drink Big nuggets of pork pieces with some with fat, which I loved. Sorta reminds me of pork adobo, but Taiwan or Chinese flavored. Sauce goes well with rice. It was cubed large and nice amount to fit in a clam shell container. 3.75/5 Minus: Forgot straws for drinks. The cold teas come in the machine sealed plastic film that one needs to poke a straw. We had straw so we still enjoyed the drinks. Ordered green tea on one of the orders but received passion fruit instead. Overall, it's a pretty good value. Although on Uber Eats the Bento box were $14.99 but on their own website the bento boxes are $12.99. I suspect we pay premium or up charge because of the nature of our times and Uber's cut from each order. Great flavour, portions, and service! Being new to the area, I wanted to try some lunch options and Bento Box DID NOT disappoint. Came in with no expectations, and left with a delicious - and authentic - meal. As other reviews have said, the pork belly bento is SOOO good. PLEASE GET THIS! The pork belly is flavoured amazingly, without being too salty, and has such a great, melts-in-your-mouth texture. I especially enjoyed the meal because despite being a large portion, it didn't feel too oily or heavy for my stomach. Just overall tasted like a home-cooked meal! Regardless, you definitely get a bang for your buck here as portions are very generous and every side compliments the rice and entree really nicely. So much food for the bento. $13.99 with a drink. We got Hainan Chicken Rice Bento and Pork Feet Bento. With an addition of Beef Green Onion Pancake. Everything came out to be less than $40 for take out during SIP. The cabbage was so fresh and crunchy. The rice was delicious. Individually grained and not mushy like other bento places. The marinated egg was also one of the best eggs I've tasted in a long while. From what I hear, the bf really enjoyed his tender chicken. (I didn't even get a bite!) The highlight was the beef onion pancake wrap, however. So. Good. We are thinking of getting a few of them next time we go and freeze them just so we have them around when we want. Their bento boxes are about $14 and come with a good amount of sides. It comes with the following: A drink Choice of meat Ground pork rice Steamed veggies An egg Pickled radish Tofu There are 18 different meats you can choose from. The ones I've tried are the fried pork chop, fried chicken, popcorn chicken, and grilled pork. So far, I like the grilled pork and the fried chicken. The grilled pork has so much flavor! Unfortunately for me, I don't like the steamed veggies, the egg, and the pickled radish. If they had an option for just a rice bowl with a choice of meat, then that would be so convenient and I would be coming more often. read more

But apparently "bento" comes from the Chinese word 便當 (pinyin: biàndāng) meaning "convenient".
