Been coming here for years. I have probably eaten here more than 100 times. The food is classic and delicious. I love it as much today as I did the first time. The portions are fair for the price. I've been to many thai restaurants in the US and this has to be the worst thai restaurant I've been to. The Tom yum is a joke. Doesn't taste anything like a normal Tom yum. Thai Spice has such a small menu that it's easy to grab exactly what you want and sometimes there's beauty in simplicity. I was craving pad see ewe and didn't feel like driving all the way down to Garden Grove to hit up my favorite restaurant so I decided to give Thai Spice a try. I actually live closer to the Irvine Marketplace location but saw such bad reviews that it turned me off to it and made me want to drive to this location. Thankfully, parking is not as chaotic as the marketplace so it wasn't difficult to find. Despite the restaurant looking empty, it's actually relatively busy especially considering we went on a Sunday at 8pm. You order at the counter and take a seat at the few tables they have downstairs. They have additional seating upstairs for those who dine in but I am not sure if they drop it off to your table or if you pick it up at the window. Pad See Ewe with Beef -- $9.95 -- very dry and the beef was so-so. I didn't like that the noodles were cut up into smaller pieces either. Egg Fried Rice with Shrimp -- $10.95 -- honestly could have made this myself. Consisted of white rice with soy sauce, egg, peas, and several pieces of shrimp. Overall, I would have probably done better by learning how to make these items on my own as they did not feel like an especially good value to me. Was looking forward to Thai food. Ordered a chicken curry (medium heat) over rice and a fried tofu appetizer. The chicken was large pieces of thigh meat; smaller pieces would have been better. But the curry was a thick glob lacking spice and taste. It was on top of the white rice and it made the rice soggy instead of flavorful. The fried tofu was much better with its dipping sauce. Oh, how the mighty have fallen! Granted, it has been probably about 15 years since I came here last, but I always had fond memories of this place. This was my go-to Thai place that was cheap, fast, and tasty! I think back fondly on the memories of a large pile of spicy and tasty pad kee mao in a large takeout container, all for the bargain price of $5. Sadly, that is no more. I came here a couple of days ago and bought the pad kee mao with chicken. Not only did I wait almost 30 minutes to receive my order (when the restaurant was not anywhere near full), but it tasted noticeably more bland than I remember. In fact, I had to add soy sauce and chili sauce just to add some flavor. It was also much less spicy than it used to be. While the $8.95 price tag is not overpriced, given the quality and the taste, I still think I overpaid. Also, the portion size seems to be smaller than before. Even though the order still came in a large takeout container, there were large chunks of lettuce that took up a decent amount of space. I should mention that I have visited Thailand before and had some amazing food there! I now know that pad kee mao is actually an Americanized dish. That said, I've definitely still had better elsewhere without the long wait and comparable (if not cheaper) price. I was so excited when I ordered, but sadly, I likely won't be back. read more

I don't know how this is a 3 star place... I've never had Spicy Pad Thai in ALL. OF. SO-CAL. as good as this one. They didn't just dump a crapload of chili oil in it. The spice flavor is very much infused in the noodle dishes. The chicken was also perfectly cooked. Someone wrote in the comments that the pad see ewe had small cut up noodles, but in my plate, they were thick and def not small. I've made a conscious decision of witholding ratings of establishments, particularly those that fall into the family owned categories, since ratings of others usually offer a good guide for patrons to choose a visit or not. For Thai Spice, I decided to deviate a bit since the ratings appear to be across the board and in all fairness, a rating can go beyond a suggestion to visit or avoid or even to benefit a business owner. I write this for all of these reasons. Having spotted Thai Spice countless times over several years, I chose to stop in. In all honesty, two of the other restaurants I was considering this particular evening were not available and in the interest of time, I gave it a shot. For starters, it has been around (per the staff/owner), for a very long time. Unfortunately, if the reason for stating this was validation, there wasn't a reason to qualify that point. Aesthetically, the business was significantly dated and appeared to have heavy mileage. The other thing that was noticed is that the options were numerous, but didn't include many of the popular dishes that are common dishes at Thai spots. As an example, the green papaya salad (Som Tum) would be one such item. Unfortunately, the other options were not entirely appealing either, so I chose to pivot with the coconut soup (tom kha), the pad see ewe. As has been conveyed by others, the portions were abundant, but the quality of the dishes was lacking both in freshness, quality of ingredients and in taste. Had I actually taken pictures of the items (chose to not do so since it was a take out situation), my references would have been more apparent. My hopes were dashed after the meal. Perhaps, I've been spoiled by my favorite in Garden Grove, but it has served as a barometer to compare against when trying a new Thai spot. I am hopeful that the proprieters recognize and accept that enhancements and updating the decor are needed. I'll be sure to monitor subsequent reviews and use them as a sign to visit again or continue searching. Be well! read more

I guess being in SoCal and having super low expectations for Thai food really made this place a lot better for me than other people. Thai food is my favorite food and I have not found anywhere in SoCal where it's actually delicious. NorCal, you've sealed the deal with good Thai food. On that note, the Pad Thai here really isn't that bad. Actually, it's pretty good. It's not super traditional but I like the way they cook their noodles here. It's not too soft and it's not too separated and hard (THE WORST). I wish it was spicier though. I've gotten the spiciest one and it still wasn't very spicy at all and the chili powder I added didn't help. I haven't had anything else here but looking at the pictures, I think I'll stick to the Pad Thai. My friend got the Pad See Ew here before and it didn't look to great. Probably the best Thai fried rice and wonton dishes we've ever had. The pineapple fried rice is my favorite. Real 'cooked in a wok' taste. Prices are incredibly reasonable so zero complaints there, and the staff so polite and helpful. Especially a young lady called AJ who not only took our big order on the phone, but greeted us with such enthusiasm and energy when we picked up our order. Thank you to the team there. It really bums me out to give restaurants low reviews. I came here in hopes of finding a great local Thai restaurant that I could order from time and again. When I entered the restaurant in the late afternoon, it looked kind of busy, people were going in and out with their orders, the kitchen was buzzing with activity. I actually like how the inside looks, like a mom and pop restaurant. The staff was very polite and took everyone's orders in a timely fashion. I ordered chicken pad Thai. When I opened the box, it looked okay, one side was sprinkled with chopped peanuts, which I appreciate. I would've liked some lime wedges to squeeze over the dish, as many other Thai restaurants provide. I believe I chose the mild spice option. It was HOT HOT HOT! I don't mind spicy food, but I usually don't eat pad Thai with a huge amount of spice to it. The taste itself was alright, but unfortunately the heat level ruined it for me. Later on, I did get sick, and I know it was because of this food because my diet that day was otherwise normal. Perhaps the reason for getting sick was just a spice level, but I guess I'll never know for certain. I was really disappointed, there is no good Thai food around me that I can order from, or drive to that's not less than 25 minutes away. (50 minute round-trip is a bit excessive just for food imo) I will not be returning, but I would encourage you to try this place for yourself and see if you like it. Be careful with the spice level here. A "mild" here has the spice level of like Sriracha. If you don't LOVE spicy food, get Not Spicy. Seriously. I saw someone complaining about they messed up the order because the "mild" was too spicy, I had the mild and it burned my mouth off. With the spicy level, it's EXTREMELY heavy-handed. I also ate half of the Fire and I got light-headed and cried for 20 minutes straight. Took the other half home and cried for another 20 minutes. A few weeks later, on separate occasions, I ate Flaming Hot Cheetos, a bunch of Wasabi, and drank some sriracha. They meant nothing to me. The Pad Thai comes with peanuts and bean sprouts. The noodles are nice and chewy, so no complaints there. I will say, though, the Pad Thai doesn't taste right. I don't know what it is, but it feels like it's 90% of the flavor I expect from a Thai restaurant, like it's missing something and there's too much lemon/lime/acid flavor. I frequent this place though, they sometimes have a promotion which makes the Pad Thai a steal! This place can be pretty good and if you want to test your mettle with spicy food. The No Spicy option is also pretty tasty, even if I don't think it tastes "right", so give this place a shot. read more
