This was a good home-style Chinese place that had a nice mix of spicy and flavor dishes. I went with a friend from Hunan and they thought it was pretty authentic other than needing to use Mexican peppers as you can't easily import the right ones. It wasn't Sichuan numbing spicy and the food came out with a nice base spice level which you can amplify by eating the peppers like I like, or leaving them on your plate like my friend! One of the best Hunan places in Irvine in my opinion for Chinese food. There is plenty of seating and the lot usually has parking. The only thing is sometimes they run out of ingredients and they won't have certain dishes. The hand pulled chicken is one of my favorites, it is a bit spicy but just get some rice with it. Horrible experience here. The young man who was our server was awful and seemed to hate his job, life, and everything, and projecting that onto us. We usually order takeout but decided to dine in today and we won't be back. We can't read or speak Chinese so we rely on the english section of the menu and ordered the "fried spicy intestine" and when it came out it was not fried. We showed him a photo of what we expected on yelp and he said that was actually the "spicy broth" and the english translation of the menu is wrong. Um... then fix it? How is the deep fried intestine called spicy broth?? Service was nonexistent. When we came into the restaurant we were the only customers there. I was on the way home and wanted green veggies and found this place. I think I got A-choy and it satisfied my craving and tasted fine, not as garlicky as I wanted but it was fine. I needed some proteins, so I got the fish fillet with sauerkraut, and it was also ok, not the best, not the worst but good enough, it had some kick to it. I asked for a recommendation on the third dish and the person suggested chicken, but I don't recall the actual description and just accepted it, it wasn't what I was expecting, it was good but if I knew what it was, I wouldn't have ordered it. It was chicken with bones and the bones were brittle so you had to be really careful. It was soupy and very spicy, in the numb your mouth type of spicy. The chicken was dry so it was good it was soupy so I could dip it with each bite. The place was a bit rundown and outdated. When I sat down to wait for my order (which took almost 30 minutes) it was a bit sticky. Maybe I got there close to closing time because there were workers in uniform having dinner, and then other workers at another table peeling vegetables. It seemed a bit weird. For whatever reason it took several minutes of me trying to catch their attention to take my takeout order even though they did greet me and knew I was there. I even closed the menu, universal sign of I've looked and made my decision. My family and I came on Saturday at 5:30, and there was no wait at all. It was actually dead empty... so that should have warned us. The service fine, the decor was fine, everything was just fine. Parking is free and shared in a lot. We ordered a bunch of dishes to share, and nothing was great, just ok. The fried eggplant was probably my favorite but it was in a puddle of oil. Both the mapu tofu and salted egg tofu were bland and lackluster. Pork belly was tender. I liked the soup since the pork knuckle was soft and fatty. The fish scared everyone with its red dye. The sauce was neon red and tasted super artificial. We just poked at it and nibbled some pieces to try. The duck was so dark and so spicy. I can't even pinpoint what flavor the duck was because it was so spicy that my tongue went numb lol. I like spicy food but this had a bitter tart flavor that I didn't quite enjoy. Veggies were pretty ok, plain, and simple. Overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone or ever go again. This is sad chinese food with dull flavors, lots of oil, and red 40 dye. read more

While the menu isn't large here, especially when compared to other Chinese restaurants like Tasty Garden and Tasty Noodle House, everything I tried here was good. I got the: salted peanuts, twice cooked pork with garlic stems, bean curd and vegetable soup, and cauliflower with pork dry pot. The pork in both dishes was thinly cut, juicy, and tender, the cauliflower was crispy and not too spicy, and the soup was surprisingly good despite its bland appearance. Service was ok here. You do need to ask for some dishes and for the check but the waiter got them to us fairly quick after asking. Tables are spaced out so you feel like you've got plenty of room. read more

Located on the left-side of the plaza across from Ivc and a sunright studio. Parking is limited but the turnover rate for spots is very fast. The restaraunt atm is more on the free side, but open for dine in and take out. If you are not someone who regularly eats hunan/sichuan/ spicy chili based cuisine, then you should be fine here. If you are though, ask for extra spice :) they adjusted the palate to fit the typical population and it's just not the kick chief. This place is meant to eat spicy cuisine ( that's what the Chinese cuisine is known for, so it's not the same without spice). This is not a numb spicy ( like sichuan), more like stir fried add chili oil ( hunan). Most of their chili spice comes from oils or dried and can do a lot better with fresh chilis. The food is on the saltier side but the service is open and nice, like a Sunday afternoon vibe. Typically around the school year they tend to be more crowded. My favorite were the cold noodles. I liked how vinegary it was and whatever curd was with it, the portion is huge and definitely filling. You mix it all up and then plop it into your plate. It also comes with this fermented bean curd sauce- but I promise this is one of the least intimidating dish and quite refreshing. This is something that could definitely be elevated with peanuts, but I understand as people are allergic. Next up are the garlic sprouts and preserved meat. I wish it was spicier with more fresh chili's. My favorite is the flavor of "wok heat" when it comes fresh out of the kitchen. There's this distinct smokey, stir fried flavor but not greasy. I think that is a key essence of chinese restaraunt specialty, so I recommend it. The preserved beef is interesting because usually preserved meat tends to be pork. It can be salty so I would recommend rice. This is definitely a dish to eat fresh to really taste the smoky heat. The stinky tofu and intestine soup was fine. I don't think it was any particular flavor- the soup is salty but it doesn't soak into the stinky tofu and intestine which is nice. Overall, the time & effort it takes to prepare intestine makes it more worth to eat at a restaraunt, but I think I prefer either component fried. ( if you want to try intestine- try dry pot styled). The stinky tofu looks promising and does have that hint of stinky tofu flavor. However, it could be deep fried to be crispier and toppings like dried radish, fresh chilis, scallions, a little cilantro and chili oil could be added to really elevate. The flavor/stinkiness of it is pretty much what you can legally get in America lol. I understand though, that a lot of people can't eat spicy so they minimised the toppings. But also means- if you've never tasted it, try here because you'll get enough of a gentle experience to not be turned away. The braised steamed pork belly with dried radish was not greasy at all. It didn't have the dried radish I was used to and the vegetable kind of tastes like the filling of green vegetarian steamed buns. But it was not greasy at all, which is appreciated! Overall, come here to try a new cuisine, they really fit it to people who aren't used to eating this kind of cuisine and the service is nice/chill. I think its just nice to support someone looking to bring their cuisine to irvine. read more

I visited pretty late and the long work day was apparent among the staff. This led to some missed opportunities, but I could tell they were nice and seemed really friendly with each other. The staff behaved like a family and it was great to see. I had the beef and green pepper stir fry and the beef fried rice with no egg. The fried rice was a no go. Really oily and no other ingredients(I asked for no egg). The beef was well seasoned and tasted great. As for the stir fry, intense and complex flavor. Slightly on the spicier side which I loved. The biggest drawback to this dish was the lack of noodles or rice. It is just the beef and peppers, which seems like a miss. This place has potential.
