Been wanting to come here for years. The skewers always looked so tantalizing. Boy was I wrong. I ordered 3 different kinds of skewers, pork, beef and sausage. The pork and beef were not good at all. They were nothing but gristle with no flavor other than the massive amount of red chili they put on them. The sausage was a little better only because there was no gristle in them. All three types of skewers were dinky. As part of my $60 order, I also got the fried tiger prawn rolls, salted edamame and the popcorn chicken. The fried tiger prawn rolls still had the skins on them and were deep fried on top of that. Not a fan of the skins on shrimp. The salted edamame was overpriced as usual and ok. The popcorn chicken was the only part that was satisfactory since they included plenty of fried basil. Will not be ordering from here ever again nor will I recommend it to anyone. read more

I went with some friends last night to Hi House restaurant in Irvine. What a fantastic restaurant. I had been looking for some time for some great Chinese food. A couple of places local to me in Dana point are no longer there ...and I was told about Hi House. The food was so delicious. Came for dinner on a Sunday night and just loved this wonderful place! The Teraki Chicken skewers and the beef skewers were amongst my favorite. I loved the egg plant and highly recommend it. Even the appetizers were fabulous! But I think my favorite was the popcorn chicken! The friendly owner was there and greeted us and I will be back with more friends. We were craving skewers and went searching when our usual spot turned out to be closed, that's how we found this place on Yelp. What a great find! The service was excellent and the food was amazing. One detail I really loved is that when you order soju, they serve it in a small vase placed in an ice bucket to keep it perfectly chilled. Such a nice touch you don't usually see! Their menu offers so much variety that it's impossible to sample everything in just one visit, so you'll have to come back again for another visit! Mango Tea was my drink of choice and I was happy about the taste and sweetness but also the serving size. Popcorn Chicken and Spicy Szechwan Wonton were great starters and they were followed by Lamb and Beef Skewers. Surprisingly the lamb was more tender than the beef! We came in on a Saturday and the place was empty; we ordered the mixed dry pot, but it wasn't listed on their iPad menu what was in it. Turns out it's a mix of tripe and aorta only with veggies. A little bit disappointed that "a mix" turns out to be just a mix of 2 things, but no complaints about the taste, the dry pot sauce is delicious and not too spicy. The size is huge for 2 people, so we have some leftover perfect for 1 more serving. We also got some skewers: lamb and chicken gizzards. The spices were a bit bland as they put very little initially, so we asked for more spice to be added and they kindly added more and reheated it for us. Overall, I quite like it and the price point is good too for the portion you get. I just wish they had more options for the dry pot toppings, maybe some with lamb or beef, cause I love the seasoning they use, but not a big fan of the limited toppings option. The food was good as well. We had the Shabu. The quality of the meat was pretty good. The Yakitori was good as well. The only one I didn't care for was the garlic grilled scallops. It was a little on the heavy side of the garlic for me, but my husband liked it. This place had more flavors than the other Chinese Hot Pot One of our servers was not fluent in English, but he did try, and we were able to communicate and understand each other. We are in America, but it doesn't mean everyone speaks English fluently. We assumed it was empty because of the time of night, it it did feel a bit strange. But though it was empty, they did seem to have a healthy amount of to-go orders since we saw many food deliver drivers come in for pick ups. I ordered their beef, tendon, and tripe noodle soup and it was good. The beef was tender, tendon was also tender with good mouth feel, and the tripe was cooked well and was not chewy at all. The food isn't bad from past visits but but I've never had worse service at any of the 8,000 Chinese restaurants I've eaten at as we did today. We came in for lunch and the waitress gave us an iPad to order from, and drinking cups. And basically disappeared for almost a half hour, not even to ask what we wanted to drink or to see if we needed help in ordering. We did submit our orders from to the kitchen from the I Pad. We were getting thirsty and only after multiple attempts were we to get her attention and she eventually brought a pitcher of water. We were beginning to think that our order never got to the kitchen, when one bowl of glass noodle soup, my wife's, out of the four we had ordered finally arrived. Meanwhile I had noticed that the guy at the next table who was already there when we arrived seemingly hadn't been served either. When he saw that we had been partially served he stomped off. Meanwhile the bowl on our table sat as my wife waited for the other bowls of glass noodle soup to arrive before starting. But minutes passed and the others didn't come. So we told my wife to start hers. But when she dug in she saw regular noodles, not glass noodles. The waitress had given us the noodles ordered by the guy at the other table, presumably to placate us!!!. Not sure what the problem was, as it wasn't that the restaurant was packed.
