Master Hu is honestly the best Hunan-style restaurant I've had in Irvine so far! The flavors are very authentic. Even though these dishes look similar in color, each one tastes completely different and unique. We ordered the Stir-Fried Pork with Green Peppers, Peppercorn Chicken, and Stir-Fried Intestines -- every single dish was amazing. I'm literally drooling again just writing this review One tip: after you finish the meat, definitely pack the leftover green peppers to go. They're incredible mixed with rice later -- super fragrant and satisfying. The only thing I'm still waiting for is Dry Pot Fish Roe. That's one of my favorite Hunan dishes, and I really hope they'll add it to the menu someday!

Master Hu replaced the former I-Tea Cafe in a busy plaza at the corner of Jeffrey Road and Irvine Center Drive. The reason I gave a less than stellar review was two-fold. The first was due to the subpar service which is consistent with what one might expect from a Chinese restaurant. A young man seated us and we were instructed to scan the QR code to view the menu and order. The two available servers only brought dishes to our table and showed up to collect payment for the bill, so we had very little interaction with the wait staff. They def did not check to see how we were enjoying our meal and they were also very difficult to call over. The second reason was due to false advertising. The restaurant has several large posters on their walls promoting their dishes, but it was extremely disappointing that they feature noodle dishes on a few of them, yet they no longer serve any noodle dishes. Having said that, we ordered four different dishes and they were all greasy and flavorful - just the way I like my Chinese food! If you're looking for a local Chinese restaurant with good food and can sacrifice the service, then Master Hu might be worth a try.

Streamed rice and stir-fried Chinese lettuce

This place has some contradictions but the food is very good. So, from the outside it has a little bit of the look of a cheap hole-in-the-wall place in a small plaza. And the dining room is small and also has the feel of a cheap quick take out place. The tables are pretty cheap with no table covers and you have to scan the QR code to see the menu. I'm fact, you have to order on your phone! But the dishes, the portions, and the prices are more like a nice white cloth full-service restaurant. My wife and I ordered two dishes and a vegetable side and we couldn't finish any of it -- the portions are large. The stir-fried Chinese lettuce was the best. Very nice flavor without being overpowering. The greens were nicely cooked -- neither under or overcooked. The stir-fried pork belly was good but a little tough for pork belly -- you expect pork belly to be really soft, but it wasn't. Also, there was some strong flavor that we didn't really like ... Maybe taro or something. The braised tofu was very good and very rich. It wasn't as hot as it looked, so that was good. Overall, we had a very good meal. We'll definitely come again to try some of the other dishes.

Radish soup ( flavorful) the radish was sweet

Wahaha guess what! I'm back, for a big party and they definitely made some changes after soft opening. First off, the prices are more expensive but the portions are also different ( no longer the small clay pots). However, rice has become more on the expensive side per portion. AUTHENTIC HUNAN CUISINE no seriously, it will be a spicy rice thief. I definitely recommend bringing someone here to show them reaI chinese food if they can handle the heat. Still popular as ever so definitely expect a waitlist when you arrive, or come at opening as seating is a bit tight and best suited for 2 parties. Bowls/plates are more casual and extra utensils/napkins found on the side of the table. Service is limited as there isn't much staff and they aim for quick turnaround d/t limited space. Also the tables might be too small for your dishes lolol. !! This restaraunt is really yummy however i highly warn against the chili fish and to stick with their dry stir fry dishes. For some reason the fish we ordered had an incredibly bad fishy taste instead of fresh and it went into the sauce as well Green peppers with beef- fried well, wok hei, tender Braised pork w/ dried pickled mustard- really tender and perfect presentation. Big portion. Like Chinese version of bossam? It is not too strong in braised flavor, but enjoyed and looks good. Big pot Beef with cilantro and chili- kinda taste the same, but tender as well, basic young? (Smaller) lotus root w/ meat- apparently this kind of lotus root is hard to find here. A bit sour but tender/crunchy, native approved Spicy beef noodles- their noodles are kind of ehh, the noodles itself good but broth can be oily **** cured meat w/ dried radish stirfry- my absolute favorite, hits the target. Must eat with rice. Its wok hei, oily, spicy, dry. Delectable hunan style. Pickled veg rice- kind of basic and a bit empty they really cut down on rice Braised pork ribs - didn't try too much again think good flavor but don't remember if specifically tender Dried tofu strip noodles- great if you need something fresher/not spicy. Has solid Braised flavor Braised tofu- a meatier/firm block of tofu also with the distinct slightly sweet/soy sauce Braised taste, not spicy Green peppers with century egg- a must try hunan dish, it was cooked tender and can be a fun experience to smash ( as it should be). staple food. It ended up being in the pricy side with around $45 a person ( biig party and big meal as can see above)

The service is super nice, and the food is delicious. We had the signature spicy fish, the steak and baby lotus (my favorite) as well as the pork intestine and pickles. And a vegetable side. My dinner partner is from the Szechuan province and he also gives this place a thumbs up. Portions are quite large and shareable, so price and value is fair. The restaurant is nice and clean and comfortable. No complaints here and would come back anytime.

Overall pretty good and food arrived fast! Portions were good and the meat wasn't too fatty. Inside was nice and clean and you order yourself through QR code. I don't know if I would back though just because I've had better hunnan food nearby.

Hot braised tofu, osmanthus milk, picked beans with beef noodles, sour lotus root & steak, hand torn cabbage, aromatic spicy beef brisket
    Audrey F.

Absolutely loved this spot! They have a wide selection of food: noodles, rice dishes, stews, dessert, tofu, etc. You order from a QR code and the food comes out very quickly! Everything I ordered was delicious and I especially enjoyed the sour lotus root and steak and the osmanthus milk white dew, a milk pudding/jelly with osmanthus syrup. Most of their dishes are a little spicy, but I didn't find any of them to be unbearable. This place seems pretty popular and typically has a line, but I only waited about 10 minutes for a table of two.

A relatively new restaurant, Master Hu still had a sign that said "soft opening" on the door. The menu is only partially available as of this review. The waitress stated they have been open 1 month. Ambiance: Clean and cozy, the restaurant has contemporary Chinese music playing and is well lit. Seating is relatively limited due to the small size of the restaurant. It was not busy when I dropped in on a Saturday night around 6pm. English speakers beware, the staff may not be able to fluently communicate with you, but they try hard! Menu: their online menu accessed through the QR code on the table was pretty decent, but most items are grayed out (I assume due to soft opening). There are not enough pictures of the menu items and some are only in chinese, so this may be hard for non-chinese patrons to figure out what dish to order. What I tried: I was originally looking for a Chinese restaurant with a good beef noodles soup. They only have rice noodles, no flour noodles, so I opted for I their Aromantic Spicy Beef Brisket with rice ($15.88), a Soy Sauce Rice ($9.88), and a Plum drink ($5.88). Thoughts: Beef Brisket: very flavorful and spicy. Tender beef with bell pepper, garlic, hot peppers. Went well with white rice. Beware, the rice portion is deceptive in the pictures. They use a large bowl and the rice is only approx 1" deep, which was not enough for me (I have a normal appetite). The portion of the brisket is also too small for an almost $16 dish, but would definitely try again. Note: another serving of rice would be additional $3. Soy Sauce Rice: refer to my comment on rice portions above. It is the same size as the rice that came with my Brisket. I ordered this dish thinking that it was something more, but it is literally white rice, with a drizzle of Soy Sauce in the middle, some loose corn kernels, a tea egg, and scallions. Not worth almost $10! Plum drink: I ordered this drink thinking it was something more as well... not worth almost $6. I would probably just drink the water provided. I came in thinking I would find my new chinese food fix for when I am craving a taste of home, but not quite what I was expecting. I will probably come back when their full menu is available to try some more items, but portion size to cost ratio is a deterrent. I finished essentially 2 entrees and a drink and it was over $30 to be just barely satiated.

Full menu of Hunan specialties. May be related to Master Hu Kitchen in San Gabriel. Crazy busy already.

It is assigned to the tiny table, but one is suppose to use this to order.

Casual restaurant with a selection of cold dishes displayed up front. Lemon water in pitcher is provided once you get seated. Order via QR code. A standout dish was the pork pancake, which was layered almost like a savory crepe. The exterior was crispy and slightly oily. Plenty of flavor packed into each bite mmm I also ordered the spicy sauerkraut lamb hot pot. It comes with flames & reminded me a bit of Boiling Point. Lots of napa cabbage in the broth. The lamb was excellently fatty... tender and soft! I've recently had another hot pot place with lean lamb so this was on point. Portions were generous and the price felt very reasonable. My favorite dish of the meal was the fatty beef with scallions. The beef was indeed fatty and rich flavor, with what I think was a nice subtle Shaoxing wine or cooking wine flavor. The natural sweetness of the onions balanced the savory, salty sauce nicely.

We've been here several times before and what keeps us coming back is the quality of the food. Today, they had a new chef cook our food and it was terrible. Green beans were extremely sour (way way too much vinegar). Mapo Tofu had a ton of oil but not enough sauce, so it was just flavorless except the oil. The fried pork chop was over fried where some pieces you can't even bite through. The rice had too much water in it and was mushy. I rarely return food but this time it was so bad we had to let them know. We returned all of our dishes back to them. They let us know there was a new chef today, and they would remake all the dishes for us with the original chef. The replacement dishes were just as good as all our previous visits and it was excellent again! So thanks to the staff for fixing the problem. I'm not sure if they are training a new chef to take over, or as a backup, but they need to be careful as serving bad quality food like that would drive most people to never come back. We knew the food was good from prior experience, so we knew we could ask why the food quality changed. For first time customers, or those that may have ordered to go - if you had bad food today, it may have been a fluke due to the new chef. Service however was a amazing as usual. For all our visits including today, the staff has been kind and always looking for ways to help out and make sure we were having a good experience. So besides the food being good, I would say excellent service is also huge plus here. Don't be fooled with the automated ordering and robot delivering the food into thinking there is no service. The people behind the counter are awesome! Hope management takes care of this new chef issue quickly since their food quality is the main reason people come here. There was a night and day difference between the original food we got today, and the replacement!

It had been a couple of months since we were last there and my parents and my daughter had been asking to go back and were really looking forward to eating there. However, we were so disappointed when we went back 2 weeks ago! The menu changed a bit, which was fine, and all our usual dishes were still there. We did notice that the cooks have changed and the original Cantonese chef was not there. I think the kitchen staff really changed how the flavors of the dishes for the worst. My 7yo daughter used to love their shrimp fried rice, but as soon as the fried rice came out, the first thing she said was "how come it looks so different from before." Not only did it look different, it was BURNT. It was like they fried the rice in a burnt wok so every grain of rice was coated in tiny black burnt bits. It was essentially inedible. They also just topped the rice with some tastless blanched shrimp instead of actually stir frying the shrimp into the rice. The green onion pancake used to be flakey with layers and expectedly oily for this dish, but the pancake we got this time was essentially a tasteless tortilla. It literally looked and tasted like a tortilla. No layers, flakes or oil at all and was the worst green onion pancake I've ever had anywhere. The fish with black bean sauce was acceptable, but it was definitely not the same. It tasted more like American Chinese flavors instead of the previous authentic Cantonese flavors. The only dish that I thought was still good was the stir fried eggplants, although my parents said it also tasted more Americanized. We are so sad that the food here has changed so much and it was one of the rare places my Cantonese dad actually said tasted authentically Cantonese in the area. The restaurant was full during our latest vist but we did notice that 90% of the diners and people ordering take-out were non-Asians. When we came previously, there was a good mix of Asian and non-Asian diners, so it seems like the clientele have shifted, which might explain the flavor changes or vice versa. The staff is still very nice and friendly, but it seems like the robot server has been laid off. I don't think we will be coming back again unfortunately as the food is no longer what we loved before. However, they seemed to still be doing well so others must still like it.

My buddy and I ordered our items and shared with each other for a good full experience. We got the three-in-one noodles medium heat and the Ma Hu Beef noodles with mild heat alongside the cucumbers with medium heat as an appetizer. Cucumbers were very fresh! However, they really were just cucumbers with a little heat on them so they weren't anything too special. Once the main entrees came in, I couldn't stop myself from digging in! I forgot to take a picture until after some damage was done to our meals. Three-in-one was so flavorful and sweet with the noodles becoming incredibly soft after having mixed it all together. The star of the show for me though was the Ma Hu Beef noodles. The beef was remarkably tender and delicious and the noodles had a firmer texture that complimented with the flavors. Oddly enough, the mild heat on the Ma Hu Beef was spicier than the medium heat three-in-one! If you find yourself in the mood for Biangbiang noodles, this is definitely the spot to go to. On a side unrelated note about the parking which did not influence my review; the parking here is rough. It's consistently packed so watch out for that. There is a structure across the street that allows parking for the food court. I parked in the structure but I had a bad experience because since it's also parking for the residents above, the gate was closed on us after 8pm. I had to wait for a vehicle to come out and open the gate for not only just me but for multiple other people that had also parked in the structure!Just something to keep in mind. At first, the portions looked smaller than we expected, but the prices were reasonable and the food ended up being more filling than it appeared. We actually thought we'd need to order several more dishes for our group of four, but by the end of the meal we were completely satisfied. My favorite was definitely the spicy wontons. The wontons themselves were great, but the sauce was flavorful, slightly spicy, and addictive!

Massive parking lot so that was easy, one friend went ahead and let them know we had 10 incoming. They made room and we sat immediately. One of the spots that you scan a menu at the table and you review, order and pay all in the app. I was really not familiar with the line up and went with the "House Special Beef Pot Roodle" (Roodles are their rice noodles). It was a weekend only item and I tried that. The noodles came separate from the soup. Over all it was very tasty. The meat was a bit fatty and the soup had tendons too. I took that part home and my wife loved it. I tend to avoid the fatty meat and tendons are not good to me. 10 of us so some of the appetizers got passed around. The smashed cucumbers are excellent, and my buddy also got some friend potatoes of sorts, reminded me of a fat French fry. Because my buddy and I sat at the same table we scanned the same menu, he ordered a bunch of stuff and also House Special Beef Pot Roodle. That confused the kitchen and they asked me if I meant to order 2, I said no and didn't realize I cancelled my buddy's order. Part of the confusion of a large party and many scanned menu orders. My buddy was struggling to order and our initial waiter seemed to not understand my friend and that took a little bit to work out, young lady came from the back and was able to quickly resolve some of the confusion and get questions answered as needed. In the end he had lot of food to explore. One thing that caught my eye was several couples there and sharing a large soup item served with a tray of various food items for the soup. Kind of a date night visual and something that looked very interesting. Several couples around us had that same dish and its got me more curious. Might have to come back with my wife and try this one.

I ordered their most popular dish, the A1 set, but honestly, it didn't really live up to the hype for me. The broth tasted pretty underseasoned overall. From what I understood, you're supposed to mix all the toppings into the soup with the noodles, but even after doing that, I still felt like the flavor was lacking. Yes, they provide seasoning on the side, but personally, I wish the broth already had enough flavor on its own without needing to adjust it myself. Would I come back? Probably not. Nothing really stood out to me enough to return, and it felt more like a one-time experience. Overall, everything was just okay.
