Most of the men worked as Texas Rangers during the wild frontier days. I was mainly looking for Rogers Hornsby, the baseball legend, but there are generations of the family buried here. Maybe do a little Genealogy research before if you want to know "who's who".

I don't recommend driving a small compact car down this single lane rough road because of the unevenness of it. The cemetery has a hundred or more graves, many of which are of the name Hornsby. Two things I noticed, there were quite a number of graves that had the "daughters of the republic" seal on them. The other thing I observed was that there were quite a number of Texas Rangers crosses as well. The cemetery is filled with some figures of local Texas history. And like a lot of graveyards from the 1800s, sadly quite a number of those graves are infants and children. I did find two large stone historical markers, but not a Texas historical sign. There's a sign on the entry gate where you can email questions to. Immediately next-door to the cemetery there's another cemetery called Cementario Mexicano. So if you're looking for a really nice cemetery to visit, I would recommend this place, but be sure to drive an off road vehicle or pick up to get there. The photos below help with the history.

It's beautiful, old, and fairly unkept (weeds, vines, stickers, fire ants). Drivable/accessible. Susanna Dickinson - section 1, Lot 363 located in the southwest end of the old cemetery. Including info because it's hard to find specifics. Blurry map available online. Bio: Susanna Dickinson was the wife of Captain Almaron Dickinson and was the sole adult Anglo survivor that witnessed the massacre at the Battle of the Alamo. On the morning of March 6, 1836, as the troops of General Antonio López de Santa Anna stormed the mission, Captain Dickinson ran to his wife, reported that all was lost, and expressed hope that she could save herself and their child. Although he died at the Alamo, his wife and child Angelina survived. Following the fall of the Alamo, Susanna was escorted from the Alamo mission, interviewed by Santa Anna himself and sent by him with a message to Sam Houston. She was a strong woman survivor and remained a patriot of Texas, but the memory of those days would haunt her the rest of her life. Bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith

The older section of Oakwood cemetery is just as painted by literature and movies - crumbled down gravestones, crawling vines, unnamed dead, multiple generations of families buried together, and wrought iron fencing. Go find the graves of John Henry Faulk, Andrew Jackson Hamilton, and Ima Hogg! I hope I have not disturbed any of the dead during my visits there or my Yelp review. I simply like to stroll through Oakwood and take in the haunted beauty. Just thought I'd share one of my favorite, lesser known spots.

When our…read morebeautiful13-year-old daughter passed from Ewing Sarcoma at MDA in Houston, we were initially transferred to another facility for cremation -- a rushed process that left us uneasy because the facility was so cold and nothing like what we expected for our sweet girl. Late that evening, while searching for a place that would truly honor her, we found Cremation.Green. We called close to 9 p.m., and Laci answered with such compassion and understanding. She immediately helped us make arrangements, and by the next morning, they sent a vehicle and our daughter was lovingly brought to their farm. The experience was beyond what we could have hoped for. We were able to watch the entire cremation and send her off ourselves -- something that brought immense peace and closure. The facility was modern, serene, and absolutely beautiful, with a viewing room designed in the warmest, most comforting way imaginable. When we walked out with her ashes, the wind was softly blowing, and the trees and windmill seemed to wave us on. In that moment, we felt a deep sense of calm and gratitude. We are forever thankful to Cremation.Green for creating such a sacred, dignified, and loving space for our little birdie's farewell.

Luckily the city has support services that help you in the process and the counselor they sent did a google search and found this place because I wanted to deal with a place that was close to home. They had a list of funeral homes and cost for cremation from traditional funeral homes was exorbitant just for the cremation not including transport, storage, fees, etc. So we found this place and the counselor called this place on my behalf. It took about an hour for them to get the body and later that afternoon I was able to talk with them on what services I needed. Pricing is very transparent and they handle almost all of the paperwork online. I was able to select the urn, extra death certificates, and get it expedited. they handle all of the paperwork and filing and you even get an obituary page with unlimited words. There was a slight hiccup with the Dr delaying the signature in the death certificate but it was resolved quickly and it took less than a month to receive my husband's ashes. On top of that it's carbon neutral and they use the cleanest technologies. They offer other services like green burials or water cremation as well. I didn't opt for a viewing but they also provided services around that too. Since I live central my pick up was off 290 but they also have a couple other locations further north or south. If you're looking for an alternative that is environmentally friendly and won't break the bank I can say this is a good option.
