I truly wanted to love this experience because I make it a priority to support Black-owned businesses whenever I can. Unfortunately, this visit to Taste Kitchen + Bar was extremely disappointing, especially considering our bill was nearly $500. The restaurant itself has a beautiful design, and the space is inviting. We especially wished we had been seated upstairs, as it appeared to offer a better dining experience. However, the positives ended there. The atmosphere outside the restaurant significantly affected our visit. There were several homeless individuals gathered near the entrance, and my husband was repeatedly approached and harassed as we entered and exited. While I understand this may not be entirely within the restaurant's control, guest safety and comfort should still be a priority. The service was well below expectations. It took approximately 35 minutes just to receive our drinks. Our waiter appeared overwhelmed, was largely absent, and rarely checked on our table. The interaction lacked warmth and attentiveness, making us feel overlooked throughout the meal. There were also multiple issues with our food order. Our entrées arrived with the wrong side dishes. Rather than waiting even longer for corrections, we simply exchanged plates among ourselves. That should never be necessary at a restaurant of this caliber. The food itself did not justify the price. The lamb was overwhelmingly spicy and heavily peppered, overpowering the flavor of the meat. My husband's blackened lobster had good seasoning but was noticeably overcooked and burned. Much of the food tasted as though it had been sitting under a heat lamp for too long, leaving several items dry or overcooked. The calamari was served cold, and the greens were excessively sweet. One of the most disappointing moments involved my niece's drink. She ordered a Sprite, but it was completely flat. We politely asked for it to be replaced with a Shirley Temple. Instead of preparing a fresh drink, it appeared that the flat Sprite was simply mixed with red syrup and returned to the table, making it taste even worse. That level of carelessness was unacceptable. When guests spend several hundred dollars on a meal, they expect exceptional food, attentive service, and an overall memorable experience. Unfortunately, our visit delivered none of those things. Instead, we left feeling disappointed by the quality of the food, the lack of service, and the overall value for the amount we spent. I sincerely hope Taste Kitchen + Bar takes reviews like this as constructive feedback. The restaurant has tremendous potential because the space is beautiful, but potential alone is not enough. High prices must be matched by outstanding food, professional service, and an exceptional guest experience. The Toast Somehow had a crisp exterior with zero sogginess. The banana pudding flavor was present but not overpowering--just the right amount of nostalgia. Sweet without being too heavy. One of those dishes where everybody at the table immediately stops talking after the first bite. Table Consensus This was one of the best French toasts we've had anywhere. Texture carried the dish. Most French toast falls apart somewhere between the syrup and the center bite. This one stayed crisp while still soft enough inside to feel rich and indulgent. I'm currently at Taste Kitchen + Bar and was genuinely excited to visit a spot where I could enjoy the NBA Playoffs atmosphere. Unfortunately, the experience has been extremely disappointing. First, I want to say my server Makala was great and did the best she could. However, everything else was a major letdown. The jerk wings were overwhelmingly salty, tables were not being cleared in a timely manner due to the lack of bussers, and the drink service was unacceptable. The drinks... THE DRINKS. I ordered a beer with a cold glass. Instead, I received a lukewarm bottle of beer and was told by the manager, Jordan, that they were "going to freeze a glass now." When I asked what I was supposed to drink while waiting, I was essentially told "nothing" and that I should just wait for the glass. Jordan then offered a discount on the beer as if that solved the issue. At that point, it became very clear there are serious management and operational problems at this location. As someone who came to check this place out as a possible venue to bring business to next weekend, this experience completely changed my mind. We made a reservation and that was absolutely necessary after seeing the wait upon arrival. We were seated immediately which was plus. The upstairs is a bit cramped but they made decent use of the space. The environment is very laid back but vibrant, music was rocking and it's VERY black in there which I love. Our server was Brian and he was the best. I was torn between the taste of soul and the catfish and grits and he was so patient and helpful with me as I mulled it over. We had: Garlic and Herb lamp chops - 10/10 - they were so moist and flavorful I have no notes. The order came with 4 so it was great to split. Calamari - 10/10 - no notes, the texture was perfect the portion size was perfect and the aioli was a great paring but they typically serve it with marina. I asked for a lemon on the side and they brought one grilled, I didn't ask for that but I was happy with the assumption. Catfish and grits - 10/10 - the portion on this plate was insane, INSANE. The grits? Please, put me in a room and give me some privacy because wow. The texture was so creamy and rich without overpowering the catfish. It got to a point in the meal where I was just eating it so I could taste it even though I was spreading like a peacock on the inside. The only thing I would change about this dish is the amount of Cajun cream as it was a bit heavy handed for my taste. I skimmed some off the top and that worked for me. Peach cobbler waffle - did not taste but my friend said they were good. Candied yams - 10/10 - I typically hate yams, it's something about the taste that's artificial to me but these were amazing. The texture, the hint of cinnamon spice were so good I had seconds. Greens - 5/10 - my least favorite thing. They were so salty I couldn't finish my bite. After my friend mentioned us being there for my birthday Brian brought out this cute slice of cake and sparkler before he started hooting and hollering and I enjoyed that haha. Brian got us started on waters while we looked at the menu, we ended up ordered calamari and wings (jerk/orange pepper) but was told that they were out of calamari and decided on the cauliflower with general tao's sauce. I got the Nearest Peach drink with whipped cream on top and order the Taste of Soul but opted for oxtails. The appetizers started the meal off right. The cauliflower was a great highlight as everyone enjoyed it (someone even mentioned ordering another one and even ordering to take home with them), the jerk chicken was good although the jerk was a little on the drier side than the orange pepper was. However you know food is good when you don't have to add anything to it (salt, pepper, hot sauce) and that's what was given to me. The greens had nice heat to them, the yams were sweet and delicious, the oxtail still had a little too much fat on them for me, but it didn't stop me from getting into them. The cornbread waffle was a nice little addition. The rice with the gravy was a nice bite. Seriously, I just sat there and smiled because this plate of food didn't disappoint. If you like liquor, you'll like this drink. Seriously, there's nothing that has me questioning if I would come back and try it again. I was craving a really good catfish and grits with a cream sauce and this definitely exceeded my expectation. I would like to give them a try dining in, but I saw they require a $50 deposit per person which is a little excessive so I'll just continue to order to go for now. The sauce was flavorful I do wish the catfish was fried a little hard, but that wasn't an option when you ordered to go. I definitely recommend trying this based on my experience for to go. One of the best meals I had during my recent Houston trip was here @ Taste! It came recommended from a lovely young lady that worked in the Galleria Mall. Me and the homies came by on a late Sunday morning to check out this deliciousness we heard about. The place itself has two levels in which we got seated upstairs. We could overlook the bar downstairs where all the TVs were. We had a nice server by the name of Demiya, in which they were a bit soft spoken but effective on covering the menu. Was very hungry so wanted something really good so I went with the Seafood Omelet. It comes wit shrimp only in reference to seafood so maybe they should change the name lol. The smoked gouda cheese definitely adds great flavor to it...needless to say, this is a great omelet. The woman at the mall told us the pecan praline waffles was the move here! One of my homies got it and she was right...very damn good! No syrup needed at all. So much good stuff on this menu. I would definitely return to Taste when I come back to Houston! I would say this place is not fit for large groups. Could only seat tables of 6 all next to each other. Ended up booking through their large party coordinator which requires a deposit, fair as it's a large party. Prior to booking, attempted to just book through OpenTable - even there they require a $50/person deposit, non refundable, which seemed a little extreme. Our waitress was fantastic, attentive and had great suggestions. Overall the group seemed to think the food was fair. Those of us that got waffles were very happy. During my research I noticed they require a card on file for reservations, and if you do not show there is a $50 charge. If you do show, the charge goes toward your meal. What really attracted me to this restaurant was not only the positive reviews but also their happy hour menu. They offered lamb chops for $6 each with a minimum of three, and that was exactly what I was craving. They also had $8 cocktails like a sidecar, lemon drop, and frozen drinks. I ordered three lamb chops along with macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes. My mom ordered the Soul Plate with oxtail which came with a sweet potato, greens, and a cornbread waffle. Everything we had was delicious. Erin was our server and she was attentive and gave excellent recommendations. The oxtails were served over rice with a rich gravy. There was some fat on the oxtails but the flavor was incredible. The food overall was amazing, the prices were reasonable, and the service was strong. Had my second visit here as I was in Houston for work. Was excited to come and introduce this restaurant to my wife as my first experience was great, however this time around it wasn't as great. Our food came out and unfortunately the Cajun pasta came out but it did not come out as it read on the menu with Cajun cream sauce, it came out with marinara sauce. We made a comment to our server and she told us it came with either sauce or no sauce so we pulled up the menu and sure enough it said Cajun cream sauce or substitute for marinara sauce which we did not do. So when she came back around we showed her the menu and she said she would check. Upon confirming she took the plate back and said she'd get it fixed. We waited a few minutes and the plate came back out however it came with bacon which we had asked to not include in the dish, at this point we were hungry and wanted to start eating so my wife said it was okay and didn't want to wait to have it re made again. The restaurant was not really full so it was a bit disappointing that this happened as I was really excited to have my wife try this restaurant. Came here while visiting for the weekend. I made a reservation online and when I arrived, I was glad I did because the waiting area was packed with people. Even with the crowd of people, the service was pretty fast. I got the taste surf and turf with the lamb chops and fried lobster tail. Lamb chops were super flavorful and juicy. My favorite was the sides. Easily some of the best collard greens and yams I've had in a while! My sister got the taste of soul and was able to swap out one of her sides for the mac & cheese. The Taste of Soul was upgraded with the ox tails served over rice which came with a side of collard greens, yams, and waffle shaped corn bread, and I ordered a side of Gouda Mac and cheese. The ox tail were cooked to perfection and you could taste the fresh beef. The sides were equally delicious and filling. However, the Mac and cheese didn't taste like Gouda. However, we do eat lots of cheese and Gouda is our cheese so it may take more Gouda per mac serving for us. The Taste of New Orleans came with catfish and shrimp which were both fried, well, with a creamy sauce. The taste is unique and enjoyable. However, we do have to say that parts were heavily seasoned with black pepper. We think the seasoning simply needed to be balanced and incorporated abit better. Foodie number two did clean his plate nothing was left of the Taste of New Orleans. We had an early lunch so the place was not crowded, service was professional yet friendly. When we received the notification our table was ready, we walked inside & saw the vibrant atmosphere, smiling faces, heard clinking glasses & cheers. The music was awesome, & I was excited. Then the hostess led us downstairs to another dining area. VERY dark, very moody, but the music was still awesome! My excitement diminished significantly but the Hubby said "This is more intimate", & I reluctantly relaxed. Seated at ~1:20, received waters at ~1:25. Server finally came to the table around 1:39, took our drink order, & received our drinks around 1:50. 2:05 the server came back to take our appetizer/food order, & I asked about the "brunch" menu. The server response was, "it's the 'all things grits'". I asked about omelets & she responded "those are on our breakfast menu which ends at 11". We placed our order, & I asked to keep a menu in case I wanted another drink. Appetizers arrived at 2:19, & we literally could not tell which wings were which, & the server was no where to be found to ask, so we had to taste them. Thankfully the wings were good, but the lack of plates, napkins, & server to request any cancelled that out. We saw an attendant clearing a neighboring table & asked him for extra napkins, but he told us to asked the server. Let's just say we never received extra napkins. Our food finally arrived at 2:58! My Hubby received one wrong side, but he said the jerk lamb chops were okay. My ribeye & eggs were COLD! Cold to the touch & taste, but the potatoes were PIPING HOT! That says nothing other than the food was prepared in the wrong order. Hubby's correct side was brought by another server. About 10 minutes afterwards our server was flying past us but the Hubby forced her to stop to tell her about my cold (at that point even colder) food. She asked if I wanted the food remade, but considering it took almost an hour to get the food in the first place, the lack of service & attention, I said no and asked for a to-go plate. I said I'd come back & make sure to request to sit in the main dining area & give the restaurant another chance, but the Hubby said absolutely not! For me, to hear him to say that speaks volumes, so we will not return. read more

I sung along to every 90's R&B song they played...well played but I didn't like that there was no lunch/brunch menu. We were immediately guided upstairs for a table for 2. It had a good view. I ordered the suggested Taste of New Orleans with grilled shrimp. It was very good. My husband ordered the Taste Breakfast, he liked the grits. We ordered pecan praline, peach cobbler, red velvet and sweet potato waffles. The waffle batter had no flavor and the toppings didn't save them, they were so bland. If I HAD to choose, the pecan praline was best only because the topping was good. Save your money. I ordered the lavender blueberry margarita. It had a pretty presentation but it was bitter. I had to stir it with the rock sugar candy stick to make it more palatable. Sighs, customer service wasn't outstanding given staff were very young and flirtatious with one another. It was giving a high school energy. We had to flag down our waiter a few times. Maybe I'll come back during the evening on a weekend for a different experience. read more

This place is very popular. Parking is horrible so if you can rideshare, please do so. Staff are very nice. Two of the managers checked on me and the bartender, Mary is so awesome! I wanted a martini and she made it so perfect that the girl next to me asked for one. Haha! read more
