Came on a Thursday evening with reservations. Its an intimate steakhouse with mostly candle lighting to create a moody atmosphere. For appetizers I got 2 spinach&cheese empanadas and the provoleta. The empanadas were loaded and packed with flavor. The chimichurri sauce they came with was refreshing! The provoleta is roasted cheese so its really hard to go wrong there. The red pepper was a nice touch. I got a ensalada Tango Sur and the ingredients were fresh topped with a tasty vinaigrette. For my entree I got the Vacio. Wow I have not had such tender flap meat! The caper-white win vesuvio sauce really complimented the steak with such a deep flavor. My steak was cooked to my liking well also. The sweet potatoes that came with it melted in my mouth and were loaded with the caper sauce. I will say if you are particular about salt, this dish was on the saltier side but for me it was just right. The staff was friendly and helpful with the different options they offered. This is a great place for a date night, special occasion or just wonderful steak!

Dimly lit and very romantic vibes in here! Food is delicious and the service was super quick after we were finally seated. I want to come back again with friends. This is the type of big portion restaurant that is great for chatting and drinking.

Tango Sur in the bottom of a residential building...this place has some great steaks they serve. A little quaint setting place..even has some live music at night....that just makes the place a great relaxing place to kick back and enjoy a conversation with someone. Wait staff was very attentive in this night.

First outing of 2026 and had a delicious meal at this Argentinean steakhouse!! We made a reservation but no one asked for it when we arrived and we were just sat. Despite the dimly lit, romantic mood they try to set, the space is simply too small and loud/noisy with convo! Tables are very close together and we were against a brick wall at a small table, which made it a little hard to move and for all our plates to fit comfortably. I was also worried about the open flame candle. The place is better for a nice dinner with friends or casual date, in my opinion. They start you off with bread and butter, and you can BYOB. We went with some apps and entrees. The meats themselves were amazing!! Loved the sweet beef empanada, rich with juicy flavors. The corn (&cheese) one was okay--piping hot inside! For the Carnes Argentinas we got, loved the El Filet and Vacio, cooked medium rare. Just a reminder that they will charge $10 if you want to share/split the any entree with others, salad included! Would skip the Tortilla de Papa --tasted kinda just like a large pan of seasoned potatoes, and it is HUGE. Left completely stuffed and with leftovers!

Out of everything i loved the empanada the most! Perfectly flaky she'll with tasty filling of spinach and cheese. We also tried the prosciutto on honeydew, it was an interesting combination and it matched. The fruit was extremely sweet. For main entry we try the platter but everything was too salty to our taste and they over cooked the meat but we didn't bother the waiters as they seem extremely busy during dinner rush hour. Overall it was fun to try this restaurant but im not sure if its good enough for us to return.

3.7 - I ordered the ravioli and short rib, and we also got an appetizer of the cheese dish. The server was nice, but the service was very slow. The inside is a very dimly lit and it's a bit hard to hear the people around you so keep that in mind otherwise it is quaint and if you go to the wine bar next-door, you can get $15 off a bottle of wine if you say you are bringing it to tango sur. The ravioli is good and I would go again for the pasta otherwise do not think I would go by choice.

Old review that I've been putting off doing since it's been a while since I ate here, but still remains one of the best and most worth meals I've had in Chicago! Went with family and we got an assortment of food but the best plate was the parillada for 2 - full of deliciously grilled juicy cuts including short ribs, flap steak, sausages, served with their house chimichurri. It's a great deal and super satisfying, but you really can't go wrong with an of the other meats. The place can get a bit tight since it's so popular and not that big a space but it's super worth it whether you're visiting or a Chicago native!

One of my favorite restaurants in Chicago. Some of the best steak entrees I've had here and the portions are HUGE! Great place for groups or a date night. It's also BYOB with no corkage fee! The entraña was one of our favorites. Empanadas were amazing too!! Service was great and attentive.

The food was delicious! Everything was cooked to perfect just how we wanted it. The service was great and we were seated immediately. There was no corkage fee and everything was great. One star off because it was very dark in there.

Tango Sur is an affordable Argentinian steakhouse in Chicago's Southport neighborhood. Best deal is El Filet, a 16 ounce double filet mignon for $55. Love the spinach mashed potatoes that come with it! You also get salad with any entree, but they charge $10 shared plate. Loved the Berenjena - eggplant spinach cheese casserole. BYOB. Great patio setting. Entire servicing staff has you covered, including an always full water glass!

Great vibes and it's very dim inside. It's BYOB, which made for a fun experience! It was my first time here, and the waiter did an amazing job explaining the menu and giving recommendations. Highlights: Berenjena en Escabeche: This cold appetizer features sliced eggplant marinated in vinegar. The sourness really helped open up our appetite for all the meat in the main course. El Filet: The meat was cooked well and I liked the sauce that came with it. The green mashed potato was intriguing, and I liked it because the unique look. We were so stuffed by the end, and we had plenty of leftovers to take home, even with just the two of us :)

It has the trappings of an Argentine restaurant but absent good Morcilla and the Argentine chorizos could have been better.

Ask the Community - Tango Sur

    Is the restaurant Dog Friendly?

    Bar area for solo diners?

No, it is BYOB. But down the street is Bodega Sur where you’re welcome to sit at a bar and wait

Do you need to show proof of vaccination?

I went in September and didn't have to show proof. Might be best to call first to confirm since things are changing so much.

    Is it byob?

    I think so

What is the dress code? Is it different in the winter?

Dress code is always casual - just know it's a crowded place and you'll have a big coat like everyone else. Summertime means patio there, and it is dog friendly outside

How is the parking situation here?

Street parking, is ok in the area. Being Southport, it can depend on Cubs games how easy it is to find a spot. I'd recommend not driving if going before/after/during one.

To the check Id if you bring the bottle in yourself?

They didn't for us but can't say for all.... 🤷‍♀️

What's the best days and hours to go?

Any day during the week as long as it's Immediately when they open.

Can we bring a bottle of wine inside?

Yes and they don't charge a corkage fee!

It appears the menu has dramatically changed on website? Is it accurate that they no longer have the fillet with mashed potatoes or is this an error/condensed menu online? I'm planning a visit but the menu looks different now.

I just went last night and had the filet with the mashed potatoes. The menu was significantly larger than the one online.

Do I have to be over 21 to make a reservation?

Nope. They don't serve alcohol but it's byob. No age restriction on reservations

We ordered the sourdough, crab avocado salad, dry aged ribeye, fried chicken, and mac and cheese. Sourdough: 10/10- ate the entire loaf before we even got the appetizers. Salad: 10/10- amazing flavor and unique. We usually never order salad but this sounded so unique and didn't disappoint - creamy, acidic, perfect appetizer. Fried Chicken: 8/10- above average fried chicken on mashed potatoes. Well spiced but nothing to write home about. Ribeye: 10/10- great steak and honestly not bad pricing. Great crust and flavor, would definitely recommend to split for 2 since it's big. Mac and Cheese: 4/10- pasta was not hot and was undercooked. I usually like al dente but this pasta was hard. It was barely cheesy and was like a alfredo sauce more than cheesy, and the crust on top was lukewarm and stagnant like it had been sitting there. Overall great experience but avoid the mac and cheese.

Being from New Orleans, I personally like my Bloody Mary a little spicier and with a little more of that NOLA kick, but this was still a really good option and a fun Korean twist on a classic brunch drink. The food was excellent and gave us plenty of variety. The Korean tray was a great choice, along with the bibimbap and avocado toast. Everything came together really well, and there was enough variety that everyone could find something they enjoyed. Since we did not have a reservation, we were seated on the outdoor patio. This did not bother me at all! I completely understood the situation. Unfortunately, the food did not meet my expectations. I had seen so many positive reviews beforehand, so I came in expecting a much more memorable dining experience. Instead, I found most of the dishes to be fairly underwhelming. The steak fries were enjoyable, there's no way you can mess up meat. Although, I felt that the dipping sauce was what really made the dish. The brussels sprouts lacked overall flavor, and the garlic chive pancakes were noticeably burnt. I have had this dish at other Korean restaurants and have never experienced them being this heavily burnt. I understand that Perilla is a Korean fusion restaurant and that the preparation may differ from what I am accustomed to, but at an upscale restaurant, I feel like the food itself needs to be much more consistent. This is one of those places where the dishes looked beautiful, but unfortunately, the presentation didn't translate into flavor for me. Just because something looks appealing doesn't necessarily mean it's going to taste good, and I think Perilla could really work on that aspect of the menu. Now, the customer service was AMAZING! Unfortunately, I didn't catch either of their names, but the host was welcoming and kind while our waiter was also sososo sweet and attentive throughout our visit. I would honestly give the staff 5/5 stars for their service. They were wonderful, but I don't think it would be fair to give the restaurant the same rating based solely on the service because I can't say the same about the food. I also want to say our server gave us complimentary dessert, how nice! The dessert was actually very yummy, but this is not a dessert spot though LOL. Overall, I really wanted to love Perilla because of all the amazing reviews I had seen, but the food just didn't live up to my expectations. The staff, however, deserves all the love because they were genuinely lovely.

After receiving the wrong order and waiting an excessive amount of time for our food, we ordered the seafood baller which we were told would accommodate six people. That was absolutely not true. The platter came with maybe three shrimp, barely any scallops, and mussels that were mostly empty shells with no meat inside. It was essentially a large platter of shells and nowhere near enough food for six people. When we asked to speak with the manager, he came to the table while I was in the restroom. Although six other people were sitting there and available to explain the problem, he chose to leave and never returned. Without speaking to us or offering to replace the meal, he took it upon himself to remove the seafood baller from our bill. We weren't looking for free food we wanted the meal we had ordered so we could eat. After sitting there for hours, we still left hungry and somehow had a nearly $700 bill for a couple of sides, two steaks, and drinks. Our server was amazing and did the best he could, but the management and overall level of professionalism were unacceptable. When a guest's order is wrong, management should communicate with the table and make an effort to resolve the problem not simply remove the food without discussing it. We absolutely will not be returning. The experience was nowhere near worth the money.

Our server, Jacob, was helpful and his recommendation of the Lyonnaise Potatoes did not disappoint. We had the small whale, an aged ribeye sandwich, and I got the filet mignon with bone marrow butter. The chilled seafood was delicious, especially with the house mustard sauce. My partner said the steak sandwich was the best they ever had. The filet was easily the best steak I've ever had though the dry-aged ribeye at Abrasado in Mendoza, Argentina is a close second. The grand martini was a perfect pairing for the chilled seafood. They threw in a complimentary brownie with ice cream for a bday dessert which was appreciated on multiple levels. We're not affluent and a meal like this was definitely a splurge but I have zero complaints and would 100% come back for a comparable special occasion. Everything was perfect and I'll remember this meal forever. Thanks, Joe's!

Both were fantastic: the filet had a beautiful sear and rich flavor, while the tender, sweet lobster was perfectly cooked, especially with butter. The service was top-notch. Everyone was welcoming and attentive without being overbearing, and our knowledgeable server offered great recommendations. The staff made the meal feel special. Joe's also delivers a classic Chicago steakhouse atmosphere: dark, polished, and lively, with families, business diners, and couples. It's a confident, established spot for more than just steak; a proper night out with polished service and timeless ambiance. Great food and exceptional hospitality made this an experience I'll remember. I'd gladly return on my next visit to Chicago.

Everything was well prepared, but the fried chicken was the standout, especially with the hot sauce adding another level of flavor. The staff stayed attentive throughout dinner and even replaced our plates between rounds, which was a level of service I wasn't expecting. I also respected seeing the owner personally making the rounds, stopping at every table to check on the guests and the food. Calm atmosphere, solid hospitality, and a kitchen that delivers.

They even print personalized menus with your names for special occasions to take home as a keepsake, which is such a thoughtful touch. The crab cake is a must-order every single time. It is packed with real, sweet lump crab meat without all the heavy breading and flour filler you usually find elsewhere. The calamari appetizer was decent, though compared to the rest of the meal, it was slightly less memorable. For the entrees, the scallops were cooked to perfection with a rich, buttery, melt in your mouth texture. The roasted chicken was also incredible, super juicy and tender on the inside with perfectly crispy, seasoned skin. Since we were celebrating a birthday, they even surprised us with a complimentary dessert to finish the night. Everything was truly flawless from start to finish. Highly recommend for any date night or celebration!
