One of my first steak experiences in the city and it set the bar high. Went with the dry aged ribeye and it made the clean plate club every bite was rich, tender, and melted in your mouth. You could really taste the beef, which is exactly what you want from a cut like that. Finally got to visit here for dinner and I absolutely loved everything here! The services was so friendly from front desk to waiter and bartender, everyone greeted us with politeness and efficiency. The restaurant itself has a bit of a vintage vibe but modern at thr bar area and a bar to displace the steaks at the front of the restaurant. We tried a couple of drinks and both were delicious. We got the escargots which was so flavorful especially when paired with garlic toast. The Hamachi had a hint citrus and refreshing. OK, excellent food all around, and for the price it should be. We started with short rib beignets with a thick au jus. Flaky shell around tender beef and an intensely flavored sauce. Yum yum. Wife got the scallops and they were tender, buttery and perfectly cooked. I would expect more than 3 scallops for 45 bucks. I got the steak frites. Big portion of fries cooked in beef fat, seasoned well (we shared). Steak came with au poivre, plenty of it, tender and rich. The sauce was excellent. Service was perfect, never wanted for a refill. I only had wine, French fries, and oysters here and I feel like this place deserves 5 stars. The steaks looked amazing, and I will definitely be back to have one. A friend and I went here in a whim because its near her house, we just waa few drinks and something to snack on, I was completely blown away with how cool this place was and how great the service was. We sat at the bar, and the first thing that struck me was hold old school the restaurant felt, it seriously felt like a place from the 1930s in the best way possible. The guy behind the bar was great, he knew his stuff and answered all of our questions about the glasses of wine we had. The fries were next level, I think they were cooked in duck fat, very tasty. The oysters were also great, perfect for a fresh tasting snack. The place isn't cheap, but its Chicago and the quality was outstanding as was the service. Will be back for a full meal. read more

tl;dr soft juicy aged steaks, good service, but mediocre ambiance. Came to Boeufhaus with my family since my dad was craving some nice aged steaks. Initial impressions was that the place was not like traditional fine dining restaurants. Seating was very tight, tables and chairs felt a little cheap. We were seated right by the entrance which wasn't an issue by itself. However, the area was very dimly lit and the to go meat case was very bright which made the menus very hard to see. Food wise, we ordered the cavatelli and shrimp cocktail to start. The shrimp were huge and very fresh. Cocktail sauce was on the sweeter side which my mom really liked. Cavatelli had good flavor and was a nice segway to the steaks. I got the porterhaus for myself. The steak comes precut and cook perfectly medium rare. Meat itself was very soft and tender but lacked a little flavor, the sauces did make up for it a little. Highly recommend the butter and the peppercorn sauce. Looking back, a 34 ounce just for myself was a little ambitious. I am proud to say I ate every last piece of meat on the bones but there was a point where it was no longer enjoyable. Overall, the steaks were good, but was it really $160 good? Probably not. Personally I expect close to perfection at that price point but I felt there were areas where the overall dining experience could have been a bit better here and there, such as the general atmosphere and selected furniture to the steak itself. read more

This is a long overdue review as we dined here on New Year's Eve. 3 of us had an amazing meal here for nye. Our server was fantastic. Very helpful and friendly. The room is small and cozy, with the right amount of lighting. I don't enjoy when a restaurant is way too dark, this restaurant didn't have that issue. We each had a cup of French onion soup that was extra super flavorful. The short rib beignets are a must get every single time. Oysters were great. Hamachi crudo was tasty. The 3 of us split an aged porterhouse that comes out pre sliced and perfect, amazing fries as well. We also had the scallops, which were much smaller than what I expected, those were okay. The ceci bean cavatelli was interesting, I probably wouldn't get this again. They had a special chocolate cake for nye and it was quite possibly the worst chocolate cake we'd ever had and I was sad we didn't get the sundae. the cake was so dry, hard, and cold, crazy they even let this leave the kitchen. I hate to leave this review for Boefhaus, because I love so much about the restaurant, but the steaks for the price are just not that good. I took the family last night (2 adults and 2 kids), and it cost us nearly $600, and both the Ribeye and the NY Strip were underwhelming. For more context we had 2 cocktails, 4 apps and 2 desserts. The Strip was $79 and the Ribeye was $106. At this prices you better serve a great steak. I found both to be lacking in flavor and I we had to salt them and cover them in sauce. They cooked them both as requested, medium rare, but I'm wondering if their aging process took some flavor away? I honestly made a Slaven farms NY Strip at home last week that tasted better. The other mains that we got were the arctic char and the Steak Frittes. The Steak frittes also wasn't great and it cost $63. They steak frittes at Le Bouchon is way better and only costs $36. Again, their pricing for their quality is way out of whack. Service was great and the place is cute, but I just can't justify coming here again when they charge top dollar and they aren't serving top quality steaks. This bums me out. But their dinner gets 3 stars from me. Maybe 2.5 stars. Oh, they also have a 22% service charge on the menu. I enjoyed their boeuf fat fries that were crispy, golden, and made even better with their malt vinegar aioli -- tangy, creamy perfection. Walked in on a Thursday night; we had no reservation, but lucked out by getting the last open table at 730ish. The place is small, and there isn't much space between the few tables they have. But once we were seated, everything was a win. Tried the short rib beignets for an appetizer. Interesting sweet/savory mix; I dug it. For the main course, I went with the NY strip, fries and mushrooms. Every bite was excellent and nothing survived. That said, my gf had the lamb and she thought it was just ok. It was a large piece of meat but she didn't quite dig the flavor. We were too full for dessert, but did try several drinks. Do yourself a favor and try the Surfer on Acid.... It was incredible. My gf had the Healthy Option and that was really good too. The only drag for me is the proximity to other patrons. I don't like being super close to strangers when I'm dropping serious coin to dine. If you want a break from the traditional River North / Gold Coast steakhouses, then make make your way to Boeufhaus. They have something different without having to forego a high quality steak. The atmosphere is more of your typical Chicago neighborhood restaurant. Long and narrow with an amazing bar. The tables are close but did not prevent us from having a comfortable time. The food was amazing. My wife started with an excellent French onion soup which she said was very good. I skipped the app and went straight for the 55 day dry aged bone-in ribeye which was exceptional and rivaled any of the more famous steakhouses in the city. Perfectly cooked to medium rare and a wonderful earthy taste that comes with that level of aging. My wife chose the duck and raved about its flavor. We ended our meal with the sundae. Cool take on steakhouse but the market priced steak doesn't beat out the competition on taste. So first the vibe is totally different from your other venues of similar price. It's a small elevated pub feel. An elongated bar with seating on one side. You'll first notice it's emphasis on the meat when you walk in and see the butchers counter. Service was top notch and the pinneaple cocktail was refreshing. Now the steak. Some context - I eat and make a lot of steak. Specifically ribeye. Have been to all the top spots in Chicago and this one has been on my list for a while. The good - I love the dry aging, the presentation, the sauces that are paired with the steak. The 55 day dry aged ribeye was $101 at market price for 22 oz. Very much on the high end for high end spots. It was definitely good but just did not hit the type of melt in your mouth tenderness and marbling. Fat was mainly concentrated on the edges and the texture was a bit too fibrous. Yes I am being very picky but only due to the price. For $50-70 range, this would be phenomenal. Unfortunately this make this place average and not something I would seek out. The attractive attribute maybe that it's the best steakhouse away from river north/ west loop. We did go for an unusually early dinner reservation, first ones in the restaurant. Would recommend, but not my favorite steakhouse. Service was fantastic. Carrot side was delicious, beef beignets were delicious. The steak itself, in this case the bone in ribeye was a good size to split between two or even three people, depending on the number of sides you order. Fries were also yummy. I wanted to love the turnips, but they just weren't flavorful enough and while the apple cream was delicious there wasn't enough overall flavor. The chef cake was a little mad, but the lemon curd with it was terrific. Very expensive, but not unexpected for a Chicago steakhouse. The night started off not so great, but the great server and food made the night great! I was craving dry aged steak...I know, very specific...but ever since David Burke closed its door, legit dry aged steak place is really hard to find... Heard great things about Beoufhaus for almost like a decade and finally tried it ...i still craved that taste of steak the next day. To top it off, they had the best escargot I have ever had...the freshest and the tastiest...it even beat those I have had in Europe...and our server was phenomenal with his service which made the night so much better! So what happened with that lost star? No where on their website nor resos process stated that diners should be 12+. I found out when I got the resos confirmation text the day of. And when I called to ask, they assured me that my kid would be welcomed and just that they don't have high chairs or kids menu. No issue since my kid is a steak monster! But I immediately felt being discriminated at arrival when I asked if we can be seated inside the restaurant instead of one of the tables by the door. Boeufhaus is such an underrated spot, but that's why I love it because I know I can usually get a reservation in a pinch. I've been coming here for a while and it's usually a go to for me when guests are visiting Chicago. I think it's one of the best steakhouses in the city! The staff are excellent, and the food is even better. They often have some good specials going on weeknights, and pro tip, if you want the burger you have to sit at the bar. For starters I always recommend the fried perch, it's one of my favorite bites in Chicago. Perfectly crispy and light. Also the short rib beignets, shrimp cocktail, and steak tartare are all excellent. For mains, they make a fantastic duck breast, the steak frites are great as well but if you're with a group either get a Ribeye or Porterhouse for the table, trust me. They dry age their meats so you get an incredible flavor and they're perfectly cooked every time. Upon our initial entrance, my girlfriend and I sat at the bar which was particularly festive in this somewhat small but quaint environment. The place was crowded with chatter and people having a good time, enjoying the atmosphere. It's decor is similar to an old Chicago Butcher Shop with some original ornaments and repurposed cabinetry to compliment the space. The staff was smiling and attentive to your every need but without being pushy. We ordered some cocktails to acclimate to the room. I had the tasty House Merlot and my girlfriend had the Red Wine Supernova (Pere Dom N apoleon Brandy, Carpano Antica V ermouth, Lime, Egg White) Tip: It's best to choose what you want for your entire dinner all at once. Starters for us included the FRENCH ONION GRATINÉE "sourdough crouton, gruyere, herbed breadcrumb" which was filled with flavor and French Onion delight. Dinner, we chose ROASTED MUSHROOM "thyme, vinegar" as a side which was more than enough for two and the 55 DAY DRY AGED RIBEYE (22 oz.) which was absolutely mouth watering at "medium rare" (you never want to ruin a delicious piece of meat by overcooking it) Dinner was all in all excellent. The desserts are hand crafted and curated and we chose the CHIFFON CAKE (pistachio, preserved lemon, rose) outstanding and truly unique creation. The vibe is awesome and it feels like a neighborhood bar that is nice and cozy. It's dimly lit and it would be good for a date night. Our table was pretty quiet as we were at the front, where we were more by ourselves. If we were seated towards the back of the restaurant, it would have been way more louder as the place is small and tables are on top of each other. It reminded me of Obelix in River North. Cocktails were really good and I think the appetizers, sides, and sauces were the best part of the meal. The shrimp was solid and the fried perch was spectacular. The frites were awesome as they were super crunchy and super salty. The sauces had some amazing flavor. For steaks, we had the Ribeye and NY Strip. Having it pre-sliced was an interesting concept so you can share; however, it was not my cup of tea. I think if you pre-cut it before it arrives, the steak is not as juicy and flavorful as it waits under the heat lamp. Dessert was good, but nothing spectacular. Brad was our server and he was good. There's a ton of steakhouses in Chicago so it's hard to stand out. Unfortunately, this one does not stand out. Make no mistake, the food was good, but with some of their rules and their prices, this place is a past. First, this place is very small. Super small. They have a large counter in the front where you can get meat to go, but it takes up way too much space for what its worth. Also, the place is super dark and super loud so be prepared to be yelling across the table and using your phone's flashlight. Outside of the place being dark, the menu is pretty straightforward, but most steaks are MP so you need to find a chalkboard to find these overpriced steak. Luckily, I went with the steak frites which was pretty self contained and the only thing under $40. The fries were phenomenal, but I got two pretty small pieces of steak. The rest of the table shared some steaks which they said were good, but were way overpriced (you will see below soon). The apps and desserts were pretty good, but nothing stood out fully. The beef beignets had some potential. The thing that really soured me were the "rules". First, you are not allowed in there if you are under 12. While I do not have kids, I was taken aback by this rule, especially since I have been going to fancy steakhouses since I was 6 (and behaved). Besides, there was a kid there under 12 so I am not sure why the rule is in place. She was also very well behaved. Second, there is a mandatory 22% service fee tacked on. They try to explain this is to give everybody a living wage and because "evil Chicago" rules made them do that. Uhhhhh. No. None of this is true. I am not sure what ordinances in Chicago are forcing you to do this, the minimum wage? As for people getting a living wage, I can certainly respect that, but you are charging the same amount as the the established steakhouses downtown AND asking for an automatic 22%. Why not just increase the prices? You are already overcharging me for a steak so whats a few dollars more. While tipping has gotten out of control, I seriously doubt a steakhouse is ground zero for unfair tips. I have heard of 3-8% service fee, but 22%? Its also charged tax which I know is totally legal, but incredibly slimy in my opinion. 22%? You have got to be kidding me. There are a hundred other steakhouses in Chicago that provide much better service and don't try to charge you an arm and a leg. If you happen to find yourself here, please know that their food is good, but that is about it. Also, leave the kids at home. read more

I have been saving Boeufhaus for a special occasion since 2019. I recently moved back to Chicago so I made sure to finally check this place out for my birthday. We had reservations for four at 6:45p on Saturday. It was busy but it didn't feel crowded. Dimmed lights, good conversation and great company. I thought the food would top off the night. It was between Bavette's or a more local restaurant. We were seated with zero issues, our waitresses was witty (I believe her name was Mars?) and she coursed out the meal perfectly. You do have to order all at once. But the food....the price tag does NOT match the substance. We started off with the shrimp cocktail, crudo, beef tartare, short rib beignets, and the escargot. The shrimp cocktail, tartare, and crudo were the highlights. I wish they could have given us three more shrimps. It didn't feel right to have 5. The crudo had a remoulade spread that was actually unexpectedly tasty. I feel like every time I have a crudo, it is usually citrus/acidic base so this was different. We went with the carrots, roasted mushrooms and frites for our sides - all average. Nothing special. I almost wish we had just gotten starters and for the table items with a drink or two. The bone-in ribeye was much better than the NY strip with the bordelaise sauce. The NY strip was SO salty, chewy, and it did not melt in my mouth like I was hoping. The sauce did not help. It didn't highlight any of the key ingredients in a bordelaise sauce. Though the bone-in was better, it didn't hit the spot I was hoping it would hit. The place is a bit of a laidback compared to some other steakhouses in the city (think Prime & Provisions, Swift & Sons) and honestly I think I much prefer this type of atmosphere. Didn't really taste much of the jus on the side, but still yummy. - East coast oysters: Hard to really make raw oysters better as long as they're fresh and these hit the spot. - Dry Aged Porterhouse + Trio of sides (summer beans, roasted mushrooms, boeuf fat fries): Definitely the star of the show. The dry age definitely gave the steak a bit of a funk, but it was super tender and delicious. Probably one of my favorite steaks in the city, though you definitely have to pay a pretty steep amount for it. Sides were all great, too. Though I wish there were a bit bigger. - Dessert (panna cotta + sundae): I thought the panna cotta was just ok and the sundae was good. My SILs have quite the sweet tooth so they seemed to really enjoy it. All the above plus one drink for everyone totaled out to about ~$110 after tax/tip per person. The Manila clams with pigtail was the best bite I've had so far this year. The broth was amazing too. Please keep it on the menu forever. The burger brought me back to a memory from the last time I had "the best burger I've ever tasted" 18 years ago. Unfortunately that place doesn't exist anymore. Thankfully this does.
