There aren't many rum bars in the city; so if that's your thing, Queen Mary's has to be on your list. The place isn't big, and you can't make reservations. But I found it cozy, and their staff is AMAZING. I used caps because they have a solid grasp on their selection and made excellent recommendations. By the way - they serve a wide variety of spirits (not just rum) but I came for the rare bottles you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere. First of all, our server Nikos was so amazing and I know how stressful it is to work a day when there are special menu items. The aesthetic of Queen Mary is incredible, it's giving Robert Egger's The Lighthouse but without the mental escapades between R. Pattz and Willem DaFoe. I grew up with a dad who was very into the Great Lakes so give me a hint of shipwreck or pub and I'm so in. Anyway, less about me, the food here on the special Sunday Raw Bar menu is just incredible. I think the pricing is very fair for the work that goes into the preparation of oysters. If you've never almost stabbed yourself trying to shuck an oyster even with a glove, you'd know the folks in the back shucking deserve all of the praise and money for their hard work. I highly recommend the clam chowder, it was one of my favorite items of the meal. The pickled oysters were another "do not miss" as the flavor was the sea, elevated. I think the Queen Mary shines in its adaptability within the seasons. It's a bar people talk about as being great for summer, and it was absolutely cozy in the 20 degree weather I went in. read more

Came to Queen Mary with a friend to catch up and for birthday drinks. I've walked past many times in the summer but have never gone inside. It's very eclectic where you have a few booths against the wall and then a big communal bar in the middle, kitchen in the back. They still have their holiday decor up, so it gave off the January vibes. Our waiter was great and mentioned that they had updated their menu. I had the Sagardo Natural Basque Cider which tasted like an allagash with the subtle hints of an orange. Other people seated had oysters or something else off their menu. A perfect gem on Division Street, Queen Mary harkens to the past in decor, service, and quality. While a lot of Division Street skews towards a fresh-out-of-college vibe, Queen Mary (along with mainstays like Rainbo Club, Bangers & Lace, and even Machine) offer you something unique and completely different. Queen Mary's interior is preserved nearly unchanged from the early 1930s, its art deco bar still intact. The vibe feels similar too, great music, just loud enough, and great conversation through the double-sided bar. The front patio is a great, but this is the rare place where I will always skip that option - you want to be inside for the vibe and the excellent service. The drinks are equally phenomenal. I most recently had the Bay Watch (ask for a large cube rather than crushed ice), a wild blend of tequila, lime, soursop, bay leaf, vanilla, and thai chili, about the most perfect balance of flavors I've had in a tequila drink. Just spicy enough, with the bay leaf and vanilla rounding everything out. Absolutely excellent. If I lived a little bit closer, this would be "my bar" without question. This spot is one of the few places that does $1 oysters and I appreciate that GREATLY. However, there are many restrictions to this. 1) Oysters often sell out if you don't get there in the first hour or two happy hour. 2) Regardless of how many people you go with, you are only allowed to order one dozen of oysters at a time. You do not get to reorder more until the oysters had reached your table and are eaten. Once you reorder, there are many many people ahead of you... so it could take up to 30 minutes+ to get your next dozen. This was very annoying especially when they advertised a fantastic oyster happy hour. :( 3) Do not come here when you are starving. Come here if you are thirsty for booze and hungry for aphrodisiacs like canned clams and happy hour oysters. They don't have an extensive menu for food when you're hungry.
