Their cocktails are gin-focused, and the two that we got were really tasty. The service was friendly and quick. For drinks, we ordered the Jester and Zigzag. The jester was refreshing and tasted a lot like celery. The zigzag was clarified and my favorite out of the two. For our charcuterie board, they have you choose a minimum of three (cheese or meat) for $8 each, then everything else on the board is complimentary. It came with bread, pickles, grapes, jam, mustard, and nuts. We chose the red rock (a blue cheddar cheese) and purple haze (soft goat cheese), plus the wagyu pastrami (I liked this a lot). If you're a gin fan, you need to check this place out. Very few spots in Chicago have this type of selection. The craft cocktails were pretty good, but the gin selection is the star here. Anyways, we show up and the hostess asks for IDs. I'm 40 so I loved it, but my Mother, remember, 67, did not bring her purse bc we were treating her and she doesn't drink. The hostess said that she couldn't stay because she needed a physical ID on her. I thought it was a joke but she was dead ass serious. Not sure if this place gets raided often for over-age people at their establishment, but we ended up walking over to GIANT who took care of us. Stopped by for a couple of cocktails. We love gin and were excited to check out the a drink or two. We sat at the bar. I asked the bartender how the Orange You Glad was and instead of answering me she just made the drink? I figured fine it was noisy no big deal. Then when she brought us our drinks and handed mine to my fiancée and he starts to take a sip the bartender yells at him?? It was very rude and unnecessary. We would have figured out that wasn't his drink and I promise I'll be fine if he takes a sip regardless. Honestly the drink was awful anyways and I didn't even finish it. My fiancée liked his but I didn't bother to remember the name because we won't be back. I understand Saturday nights at a restaurant are crazy - having been a server myself to pay for college - but there's no need to take your stress out on your customers. Everything from the ambiance, to the service, to the food was 10/10. We arrived early for our reservation and they had us seated for a drink at a couch in the back while our table finished up. The vibes are immaculate inside - cozy, dark and lively. Scofflaw truly exudes coolness without trying too hard. We enjoyed our drinks, some more than others. But seriously get the burger. It's absolutely perfect, I have no notes. Our waiter went above and beyond and even brought my brother a small plate of fries because we didn't save him any. Went to Scofflaw for the second time this evening and it remains an excellent experience. Service was fast, polite, and made us aware of a few things we didn't know about things we were ordering so we wouldn't be surprised. Menu remains good while being relatively compact - they do fewer things better and I appreciate that. We had several cocktails with differing profiles and base liquors and they were all good, definitely in the A class for our fair city. Particularly good was the Bear Necessity which was delightfully well balanced for any palette. For appetizers we had the fried cauliflower with the lemon pepper sauce and the beet bruschetta. Both were S class and vegetarian as well. For mains we had the Italian Beef Spaetzle and the Eggplant Hoagie, both were A class and off special note was the crispy chickpeas in the hoagie giving it an extra enjoyable texture component. We finished with the cinnamon monkey bread which was so good that I did indeed split it with my date despite initially turning down dessert. If you're in the neighborhood or looking for somewhere worth a bit of a jaunt for a lovely meal, I'd recommend Scofflaw wholeheartedly. Prices were reasonable, maybe even trending a bit on the inexpensive side for the quality of the meal. read more

You can have anything on the menu before 5 as long as you order from the Brunch menu. Im not a a burger person but my son and future son I law swears by it so who am I to argue. I had the sesame French toast; sweet, savory strangely weird but I like it. It's too rich - share it with someone. The steak sandwich is excellent. My issue is with the "to go" order. I told the bar tender I need it by 2:10 - 2:15. I got it around 2:30. Too late for my wife, daughter, her future mother in law they left at 2:18. He wasn't the fastest bar tender his speed was his speed and you just had to deal with that. He was nice mind you. You just knew you couldn't rush him. I've heard so much about this cute bar and finally had a chance to visit! Seating is competitive but we were lucky to snag a bar seat. The dark moody lighting and smooth background music made this a perfect spot for a rainy night. Our bartender was incredible, and so was the hostesses at the front door. The Scofflaw burger is easily one of the best in Chicago and deserves more recognition. Perfectly cooked double patty with cheese, house sauce, grilled onion, and pickles, and don't forget to add the bacon! And the bun, I know that sounds like a strange part to rave about, but a good bun is so important to a burger and this one is flawless. Also they have a great charcuterie selection. This place is a great for a late-night bite to eat! We came for dinner at around 7pm on a Friday night, so it was still relatively quieter when we initially sat down, but as the night went on it definitely got more bustling. The interior decoration is cute: the furniture is vintage and gives a baroque feel. It is also dimly lit, which contributes to the atmosphere. Service was attentive and fast. For cocktails, we had the Corn Fed and Swizzle #44. The alcohol was a bit strong on both of these drinks and drowned out the other flavors in the cocktails. Given that this is a gin-focused bar, I would be curious to come back and try their gin and tonic. The food definitely impressed me more than the drinks (however, I am less of an avid alcohol drinker). We got the Fire Chicken Scallion Pancake, Brussels Sprouts, Scofflaw Burger, and Black Sesame Beignets. Everything was pretty good, and I enjoyed the fusion of Asian flavors, but the standout for me was the Fire Chicken Scallion Pancake. It is a bit annoying that the burger does not automatically come with fries, and to add fries it is the same price as ordering the separate appetizer. I expected the Black Sesame Beignets to have a stronger black sesame flavor, but the black sesame seeds were only sprinkled on the top. Came in at 11:54 this last Saturday with my boyfriend. Asked if we could sit in the back, Hostess named Chantelle told us no and that we had to sit at the bar. I went to the bathroom and saw that the back area was very much open, maybe half full but still easily room. I asked again if we could go sit back there on one of the two open couches even. She was incredibly resistant. She said something about her rotation or that they were saving all that room in case 'larger parties came in" - (she was also on her phone constantly in between all of this) When I asked again on my back to the bar, (also VERY unlike me to pester anyone like this) , she said something about keeping her rotation finished and then said that she could put us on a two top back there if we "REALLY really" wanted too. Genuinely confused how she was holding a two top for the idea of a larger party. She said we would have to close our tab at the bar since we had already 'decided' to sit there. Anyways my boyfriend said we should go else where and finish the drinks. I think when she saw us closing she did come over and say something about us 'being the people who wanted to get moved' . We left, spent our money on a few rounds at Best Intentions down the street (which was an amazing experience) Also, i've worked as a server for 4-5 years in Chicago :) This is also the very first and only review I have ever written because this was maybe the worst and most frustrating experience I have EVER had at a bar. I started off with a bias against this place. I thought it was going to be too hip. The niche of "gin bar" made me roll my eyes. Turns out, we had a good time. Half-priced drinks during happy hour helped! Ambiance - it wasn't loud, it was chill and not pretentious (which is what I was expecting). The server was very nice, attentive and helpful. I got a (non-alcoholic) peach fuzz which was a nice shrub. My girlfriend got a gin drink we both liked, maybe a tom collins. Brussel sprouts F'n GOOD. Crunchy rice, well-cooked sprouts, LOTS of some kind of mayo-based sauce that had a great flavor. We both love condiments. Girlfriend thought they were mind-blowing. It was a large portion, too. Fries They were plentiful, super crispy, not greasy. All-around very good fries, and believe me I've had my share. The aioli could have had more flavor. Black sesame beignets Very good. Not hollow/puffy like Cafe du Monde beignets, more like square doughnuts. Not a strong sesame flavor, but a good flavor. The miso caramel was very very good and provided most of the flavor. Went in to try this burger. My buddy and I see each other 1-2 times per year and it's always the burger spot in Chicago. We've been to them all. The burger came out quick and it was delicious but not our favorite in the city. Still it was good! That said, service was kind of blah. Our server was a bit interesting. My buddy is a big wine guy and he always brings a bottle for our burgers. That said, we pay the corkage fee and all is good. I don't think she was aware of this (that it's not a big deal) and literally said to my buddy when he brought out the bottle "are you serious?" Haha "we sell wine here she said next." I guess maybe she never heard of anyone bringing in their own bottle, which might I add is a bit odd? We've done it at every single place for two decades and never been told no. She did say it's something to do with the liquor license, which I guess I understand. No big deal we ordered wine & cocktails. Just thought that was weird and a bit off putting. Ok you're busy but no menus or water until 15 mins in? Ordered burger and tots, came out with burger and fries. Didn't send back because it wasn't worth waiting 10 more mins for them to acknowledge me. Discouraged from even asking for ketchup for the same reasons. No silverware was given. They used to have cloth napkins. Another patron that came in ended up using my menus because he was also ignored at the bar. Not a friendly environment, awkward. Such a shame because I really liked this place. Now I only go if there are specials of some kind because it's not worth it due to the unfriendly and borderline rude service. Catching up on Yelp reviews in 2024. I have been to Scofflaw a few times and my last visit was in April as I went on a date. We sat in the back room on the couches, which was a great vibe. Dimly lit, intimate, and cozy with the fireplace. It wasn't too crowded on a Wednesday night. Karina was our waitress and she was good. Prices are fine for Chicago. We shared a charcuterie board and we both had some Tom Collins with Sipsmith Gin, which were excellent. I think I love it here? After a Sunday funday, my friend and I were so hungry and were down to eat a burger while also check a place off my list. We were able to snag a reservation online. Once we arrived, the place was already kinda packed, and gave off a very moody just casual vibe. We were seated in the back section but I wish we had the fireside seats, those looked so cute and warm on a cold Chicago night. We went to order, asked for a recommendation to get with the burger, but didn't get one. So we just picked two different cocktails, the sneaky mirror and shipwrecker. We both enjoyed our drinks, but the sneaky mirror was more ice than anything. When our burgers arrived, we were ready to dig in. Everything was so delicious and perfect. I really enjoyed it.
