I think this is what people mean when they say something is a hidden gem. Apéro has an incredible wine and vermouth selection, tasty small bites, and great cocktails. Above all, the staff here is fantastic! They're super friendly and also knowledgeable about everything on offer. I love this place but get here early as it gets packed.

Intimate wine bar with the friendliest staff. Super helpful with choosing a wine based on our preferences and I believe they rotate through bottles fairly quick as I was also here maybe a month or two before so definitely a variety. Winery rep from Michigan happened to be there and it was a good time trying various wines. The snacks offered were also a treat, really enjoyed the chimi potatoes. Perfect spot to end the night.

Such a cute and quaint wine bar! There's a wide selection of drinks, including some super interesting locally made wines and whiskies. You can even get little testers to sample before you commit. Biggest shoutout to the best bartender ever, Dan (!!), who was so kind and helpful I really liked the sparkling orange wine - super crisp and refreshing. I also tried one of their local whiskies; it did the job but lacked some complexity flavor-wise. The vibe and aesthetic are on point, and they offer small bites too with complementary corn nuts that were supppeerr yummy! Highly recommend and will definitely be coming back!

Apero is a very welcome addition to the North Center neighborhood, a respite of wine and light fare in an area stifled with beer and bar food. We were impressed, though not surprised, with the vast wine list and quality, up there with mainstays like Webster's in Logan Square. The staff are all knowledgeable (though some more than others), able to guide you in whatever direction you'd like your journey to take you. We were glad to have complimentary hominy, as well as a delicious cheeseboard at a fairly reasonable price. Nice variety and quality, along with raspberries and lightly pickled veggies. Very good. The bar also offers a few cocktails, though they are limited with only a few spirits. The vibe is really great both inside and out - both times we've gone, we wish we would have been able to stay a little longer. And that's actually why I'm only going with 4 stars. The hours. Why can't we be open for happy hour toward the end of week and around noon on the weekend? We would have come here at least a dozen more times, but when you only open at 5pm, you're losing so much to the dinner crowd. Even opening a few hours beforehand would allow for a nice predinner drink and snack (and maybe more), rather than having a time limit before heading to the next spot. We like it here. We want to be here more often, there's a ton to like. But, would absolutely love more afternoon hours.

Very cute wine bar. We ordered spritzes, the seasonal focaccia, and the cheese charcuterie board. The cheese charcuterie was our favorite.

Absolutely OBSESSED with this cute little wine bar. I had seen it driving by and knew I needed to check it out. Quaint, very cute decor, excellent wine list and such kind staff. Unfortunately it was 90+ degrees when we visited so will have to come back and sit on the patio! I cannot recommend the Union Sacré orange wine enough. Come here asap!

    Lovely back patio.

Ordered the fries and they brought us 8 steak fries, four each for my friend and me. They up-charged us for aioli.

The bartender was nice. When asked, he said none of their drinks are really sweet. He said some Logan Square bartenders have PTSD from people asking about sweet drinks, as if they're the only ones who don't like sweet cocktails (hilarious). I didn't mean anything by it but was debating on the flavor and if I was up for something sweet or not. I landed on the Fortune Teller, perfect sipping drink. Lots of complex flavors, not too sweet, can definitely taste the coconut and pandan. I was surprised by the how much pandan flavor there was. My friends had the espresso martini (liked the drink but not the foam), Negroni Bianco, Aperol spritzes, and highball. All were good. Honorable mention for the Bonal shot (fortified wine). It was good! We were in the seating area at this point but the speakers were so loud it was hard to all talk to each other.

There is a lot of bar seating and outdoor seating for the summer. The bartenders are all really chill and welcoming. We tried -the mezcal negroni which was perfectly made in a way that the mezcal/capari had a good balance -espresso martini: such a different unique take with this! the dalgona foam made is extra rich - canned heat: a really great gin cocktail! - boulevardier: great rye cocktail that balanced well with the other ingredients It'd love to come here to grab coffee and breakfast sandwich. I would also love to come back to try some of the other cocktails and highballs.

From, the service, to the food, to the ambiance, everything was near perfect. Our reservation was at 6pm but we arrived about 10 minutes early. We were greeted and seated immediately. We were seated in one of their semi-private tables surrounded by sheer curtains. Alex was our server, he greeted us right away, and started us with waters. Alex gave us time to look over the menu before taking our drink orders. We did let him know it was our first time dining at Penumbra and would like anything recommendations he had to offer. He provided his recommendations, which were the jalapeño shrimp, the ribeye, and the salmon. My husband went with the surf and turf (ribeye and lobster), and I went with the salmon. Before our meal they serve you a complimentary sipping soup (potato rosemary bisque). We also ordered drinks. He had a mojito and I had a caipirinha. It took a little time for our meal but not more than 10-15 minutes. Everything was prepared as we ordered it, hot, and delicious. If you're in Chicago and looking for a good meal, nice romantic ambiance, and good food, you will not be disappointed with Penumbra.

I walked from the Blue Line and felt extremely safe. It's in such a pretty part of town. There are plenty of seating spaces both inside and outside. When you arrive, you find a table you like and then go up to the counter to order. They have QR codes everywhere so you can see the menu online. If you like natural wines this is the place for you. The people who work here are absolutely incredible. I came straight from the airport so had my suitcase and one of the bartenders offered to take my bag to the back which I adored. My friend also took a really long time to get there from work so I just hung out for a while and they didn't make me feel too weird about it. One of them even gave me a generous pour of the wine I got. I also ordered us a meat and cheese board which was simple, but nice. Do know that the prices are a bit high here. If you want to get a full bottle of wine the average price is about $60 for a bottle. The aesthetics of this bar are A+. It is really loud inside. The name says it all, you will be using outside voices. While we adored this place, the music was a bit loud so it was a little hard to catch up. That being said, we made the most of it. It also was the spot that I asked her to be my bridesmaid so it'll forever have a special place in my heart.
