We had a pleasant dinner on a Sunday evening out on the patio. Luckily it's covered so the little bit of rain we had did not bother us. They had a very nice bread server with four individual oval French loaves with very tasty butter. We tried the provoleta with peppers because we like that a lot in Argentina, but this was nothing like it and I guess that was to be expected. There they have a bunch of drier version of provolone and they grill it directly on the grill grates and it doesn't really melt too much. This tasted like standard provolone cheese and it was melted in a bowl. It was tasty, and unfortunately they probably can't get the Argentinian version of the cheese they would need to do it correctly. Our friends got the beef brochette with asparagus and the outside skirt steak and both were fabulous. Well seasoned and grilled and tender. My husband and I got the 2 pound stuffed fillet! It supposedly had ham in the filling but I couldn't taste it or see it anywhere. Unfortunately it had a really strongly flavored sauce along with the portobello mushrooms. We expected something with fewer herbs, which kind of overpowered the beef. It's a shame because the way they described it on the menu is not what came out. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't what we were expecting and unfortunately, the beef flavor was hard to discern because of all of the herbs in the dark brown sauce. We brought our own wine and they didn't even have a corkage fee, which was amazing! We saw other plates go by with copious amounts of tomatoes and onions on salads and the filet mignon platter, it seemed like it was three or four pieces of fillet it had to be nearly a pound for one serving. The prices are pretty steep for the beef and they do charge $10 for sharing, however it might be worth just getting one of the larger plates and spending the 10 bucks to share as opposed to getting an entrée each and taking home lots of food which we did. read more

We love a BYOB with no corkage fee. Also, warm table bread!! Pretty easy to call in and get a res for a Sunday night. The warm table bread and butter was pretty good so it was an effort to keep from eating too much and ruining our appetite. We split a chicken empanada to start which was really good, especially with the chimichurri sauce. For mains, we split the parillada para dos - a large meat platter meant for two. It was came with a little house salad and was a super good deal with all the meat they gave you (we ended up with lunch the next day, too!) The best part of the dish was the short ribs. Super soft and sort of fatty tasting, but not in a gross way, in a really yummy way. We also really liked the chorizo sausage. The flap tastes good, but was a little tougher than the other meat. Came on a Thursday evening with reservations. Its an intimate steakhouse with mostly candle lighting to create a moody atmosphere. For appetizers I got 2 spinach&cheese empanadas and the provoleta. The empanadas were loaded and packed with flavor. The chimichurri sauce they came with was refreshing! The provoleta is roasted cheese so its really hard to go wrong there. The red pepper was a nice touch. I got a ensalada Tango Sur and the ingredients were fresh topped with a tasty vinaigrette. For my entree I got the Vacio. Wow I have not had such tender flap meat! The caper-white win vesuvio sauce really complimented the steak with such a deep flavor. My steak was cooked to my liking well also. The sweet potatoes that came with it melted in my mouth and were loaded with the caper sauce. I will say if you are particular about salt, this dish was on the saltier side but for me it was just right. The staff was friendly and helpful with the different options they offered. I came here with two friends for a mid week dinner to break up the week and had such a blast! The restaurant was dimly lit (in a good way) with a candle on the table. First outing of 2026 and had a delicious meal at this Argentinean steakhouse!! We made a reservation but no one asked for it when we arrived and we were just sat. Despite the dimly lit, romantic mood they try to set, the space is simply too small and loud/noisy with convo! Tables are very close together and we were against a brick wall at a small table, which made it a little hard to move and for all our plates to fit comfortably. I was also worried about the open flame candle. The place is better for a nice dinner with friends or casual date, in my opinion. They start you off with bread and butter, and you can BYOB. We also tried the prosciutto on honeydew, it was an interesting combination and it matched. The fruit was extremely sweet. I've been coming to Tango Sur for years, always enjoyed the food. The last two times I've gone the food was awful. First bad experience: Got the ribeye and it was 90% fat couldn't even cut through it. Figured, ok just a bad cut of meat no problem. Second time order the ribeye again med rare and the steak comes out super well done! I kindly asked for another steak figuring they just overcooked it. I was really excited to visit this restaurant, however, my experience was disappointing. It took 30 minutes to receive water, one hour for bread, and 1.5 hours for our food after ordering. Meanwhile, the table next to us received their water and bread almost immediately. As a former server at a high-end establishment, I completely understand that a busy Friday night can cause delays. However, what stood out was the lack of communication. A simple acknowledgment like, "I'm so sorry for the wait, your food may be delayed" or letting us know that we had been seated multiple times would have made a significant difference. While the food itself was enjoyable and lived up to my expectations, the service left me disappointed. I share this feedback respectfully, as I was genuinely surprised by the way my family was treated. The ambiance of this place was dark. Not in a depressing way, but in a candlelit romantic dinner way, but so dark you can read the menu way. Our server was really good, giving us recommendations and was very helpful. We ordered: Jamon Crudo con Melon -- this one was interesting. It was prociutto served on top of cantaloupe, and it surprisingly worked well together. Empanadas -- went with one beef and one chicken. I definitely liked the beef better Provoleta -- if you're a fan of melted cheese and bread to dip it in, you'll definitely like this appetizer. The dish had argentine provolone cheese cooked on the grill with olive oil and roasted red pepper. Very cheesy. My least favorite of the appetizers. It had a huge ample amount of cheese. Eat it fast before it hardens. Lomo Relleno - Half slab Argentinian style filet mignon, stuffed with ham and chimichurri, served with portobello mushroom marsala. Ideal for two and it sure was, as the steak was plenty. It had a lot of flavor. To me, I like my steaks more dry, but hey, I never been to an Argentinean steakhouse. I still enjoyed it and the sauce it came with was extremely flavorful. In terms of the area, parking was tough. If you can't find street parking on Southport, I heard there is parking at the nearby elementary school, across the street from the restaurant. Good luck. Argentine asado in Chicago! At the end of the 2023 Chicago marathon, my runner wanted to come back to Tango Sur for a post-run meal. There's outdoor and indoor seating available but we opted to sit indoors where it was cozy and dimly lit with a candle on the table. We ordered... Ham and cheese empanada: tiny but tasty! The shell wasn't too thick and fried perfectly so this was great. Asado de Tira: star of the meal with well seasoned short ribs and some braised potatoes. Chorizo: 2 pieces with some lemon wedges. This was good to eat with the complimentary bread, like a hotdog. Tallarines: red pasta fettuccini, but can order with white sauce. This was ok and paired nicely with the asado Salad: standard with vinaigrette dressing Though I enjoyed the meal, I'm knocking off a star for the $10 charge for sharing plates and the service. I've heard amazing things so I was excited to finally try it. My medium rare steak was a bit too rare, the mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a box, and the steak knife was dull and not serrated. I had to tear off pieces with way too much effort considering the steak was soft and rare. A sharp, serrated steak knife would make more sense to me. The provolone appetizer was really good! But it seems like it should come with a bread or cracker to pair it with. Also, they brought me a diet pepsi when I asked for a diet coke. Whenever anyone asks for a steak recommendation in Chicago I direct people to Tango Sur. 1. The affordability here is insane, you're not paying crazy premium prices for a mediocre steak here. 2. The flavor profile here, especially that of the chimichurri sauce that they provide for their empanadas and steak is out of this world. I literally salivate thinking about the sauce today and would inject it straight into my veins if I could. 3. The overall ambiance and service is supreme--the inside of the restaurant is dimly lit, guaranteed to put you in a food coma after you consume your steak. 4. It's BYOB??? And they have a neighboring wine bar (Bodega Sur) where you can grab a wine bottle from to take and consume at Tango Sur, as if it wasn't already great value for your money enough. 5. Wow wow wow! I just moved from California and was in search of some amazing cuisine. This restaurant has such a beautiful social ambiance, great for date night or a night out with friends. I made a second visit and I think I'll definitely be a repeat customer for as long as I'm here. The chimichurri sauce alone is just wow, 10/10 and probably a top reason why we want to keep coming back! We've had the ham&chz and beef empanadas, they were delicious. The chorizo is probably my husband and I's favorite to have as a side or app. The Pez entree with mushroom sauce and asparagus is amazing with such good flavor. Really popular spot, even on a Monday night. We had a reservation for 7pm but they kindly switched it to 6:15 for us about an hour before since we were running early. Dimly lit restaurant with every table candlelit. Lots of seating inside and out, but even with that it was a full house by 7:30pm. We ordered the eggplant empanada, chorizo, el filet, and the costeleta. The empanada and chorizo were delicious. I made a choripan by sandwiching the chorizo in the free bread. We enjoyed the mashed potatoes and costela (t-bone). Very flavorful and tasty. Unfortunately el filet, which is supposed to be the best in house, was quite dry (we ordered medium). In addition, the steaks were quite salty and so was the chimichurri sauce was quite salty so we couldn't add much to our items. My boyfriend and I always come here on our anniversary, but today we came for my birthday. I recommended this place to so many people, but I will never do that again after my experiance today. We ended up walking out. They put my boyfriend and I at a table where right when you walk in the table is there, at the entrance and you have people standing right behind your seat literally touching you waiting to be seated. We had no silverware, but we had bread, but no knife to butter it.. It was loud with people singing the entire time. It pissed us off because our table was literally the waiting area. We asked to move, but they didn't bring our bread, nor did they bring us silverware AGAIN. It was frustrating to have to ask for those things. They brought 1 piece of bread over but no silverware. The bread was already cold by that time. I was really sad and disappointed because I tell everyone about their 16oz steak and vescuvio potatoes. But they didn't deliver. I am actually kind of hurt that I rave about this place, but I will never do that again. Wehad a 9:00 reservation, but ended up with the worst seat in the house. So much for scheduling 1 week in advance. After today I will never recommend them again. It actually hurts me a lot to think this because I was a huge fan and it was a tradition to come here. They also try to cram way too many people inside of a small spot, but the price doesn't match that, nor does the service. The restaurant is BYOB and there isn't a corkage fee. I don't eat steak but the grilled chicken and veggies were so yummy. I got a side of the plain mashed potatoes which were delicious as well.
