Cariño is a newer 1 Michelin Star restaurant in Chicago. The chef, Norman Fenton, was featured on Apple's Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars and quickly gained a star his first year being open. This year, he is a finalist for a James Beard Award in the Best Chef: Great Lakes category. Their dining room offers seven seats at the chef's counter as well as sixteen seats in the main dining area. Their reservations book out 3+ months but we were able to fill a last minute cancellation by emailing their General Manager. I would highly recommend trying to get in for the chef's counter as you have a great view of all kitchen work, get two extra savory courses, and get to have an intimate conversation with Chef Norman himself. They started by giving us a complimentary glass of Malbec Rosé from Argentina to celebrate our anniversary. We samples some of their other cocktails throughout the night. The Mi Campo Margarita was perfect for the first couple of lighter courses. Later, the Oaxaca Old Fashioned and La Chingona paired nicely with the richer meat courses. The main dining room tasting menu included 12 courses (Tacos Dorados, Bluefin Tuna, and Tostada served together). Some of the courses definitely had larger portions than I was expecting. The standout dishes were the Michelada, Ravioli, Tacos Dorados, and Pineapple in my opinion. Each dish seemed to be a classic latin dish or flavor served in an elevated format or with unconventional ingredients. For such a small dining room, it was a bit scattered for service having three different course progressions going on at one time. It slightly pulled me out of our experience being so close to others being on a different dish. The hospitality level met expectations but did not exceed like some other Michelin dinners I've experienced. Overall, Cariño has amazing offerings and flavors that connect you directly with latin culture and techniques. Nothing on menu was more than a medium heat level which I also appreciated. Cariño is definitely a fav for me now! I really enjoyed both the taste and the presentation aspects of the dishes. Some ones I really liked: Aguachile, Ravioli, Bluefin Tuna, Tostada, Black Cod. Every savory dish was great, none were a miss for me :). Ravioli gave very traditional rich black truffle taste. I didn't sit Chef's counter, but I could see chef Fenton hard at work with his team and serving the chef's counter guests! I also really liked the ambiance, and the music playing. I came here to celebrate my birthday with my girlfriend and friends. The restaurant is on the smaller side. We took an Uber but you can easily get here with the CTA. You might have to use Spot Hero to find parking. The tasting menu is $200 per person. They also have a taco omakase for $125 per person. We did the Michelin star tasting menu. Service from start to finish was amazing and attentive. All of the staff was super friendly and helpful. I'm sure many people have gone through every course but I'm not going to do that. This is my second Latin American inspired tasting menu and I really loved every course. I didn't find anything that was super salty or overpowering. This was my second Michelin-starred experience during my latest visit to Chicago; Oriole was the first. Located in Uptown (that's a few L stops past Wrigley Field), this unassuming little jewel box underneath the L tracks serves a Latin American tasting menu with much complexity and originality. Executive chef/owner Norman Fenton has an impressive culinary resume and spends a lot of time in Mexico, where he met his wife, where his children were born, and where he has a restaurant in Tulum. Carino's dining room hot spot is the 7-seat chef's counter facing the kitchen. There are also about 4-6 tables. The counter tasting menu has one extra course vs. the table tasting menu. It seems there are 3 reservation times for the tables, while the chef's counter has one seating each night. Afterwards at the counter for 4 nights a week there is a taco omakase experience that I would have to stay up well past my bedtime to try (a definite possibility). Carino's menu is full of dishes that sound familiar---chips and salsa, chicharron michelada, aguachile, ravioli, taco, tostada, quesadilla---but they definitely are not! Each dish has many ingredients, often unique, and many steps in preparation. The menu probably changes slightly every so often, so I won't list what I had. I'd say my favourite plates were the ravioli with huitlacoche (a new taste for me) and corn (most likely to be a menu mainstay), the chicken liver taco, lamb tartare tostada, and the lamb with beets. Carino offers a couple of wine pairings as well as a spirit-free pairing, which is what I had. The drinks were as complex as the food. There's also a cocktail menu. Chef Fenton is not an Executive Chef who merely supervises; he's definitely hands-on and clearly the eye of the storm in the kitchen, whirling about with intent and yet still purposefully conversing with counter guests. The choreography of the entire staff was quite impressive; service was of course excellent. Overall a wonderful discovery and experience. It's nice when Michelin recognizes smaller-scale places that aren't necessarily French or Japanese, but have a purpose, plan and vision that are worthy of accolades. read more

The counter experience, the food, the chef, the drinks...all just an incredible experience. This is one of those gems that makes me proud to be a Chicagoan and boast our amazing culinary scene. We came in July during a promotional partnership that Carino was doing with Chase. Not sure if it was just because of that special event, but the experience was so intimate. We were sat at the counter and could see all the food being prepared. The chef himself was working just as hard as the other cooks and obviously cares very deeply about his craft. We loved chatting with him and seeing him work. The food was out of this world. The ability to take such a simple thing like chips and salsa or corn ravioli and make it unique and fun was so impressive. The 'chips and salsa' was basically one bite on a spoon of a salsa verde bubble, with crunchy chip pieces on top. The corn ravioli was a mystery dish covered in foam that revealed decadent corn and truffle beneath. We had a taco trio of the most different and unique tacos ever, from chicken liver to a crab taco actually shaped like a crab. The salmon aguachile sauce was so good my husband may have secretly licked the plate. Even the desserts were so thoughtful, like a chocolate shaped like the Teotihuacan pyramids. And, thanks to Chase, they even sent us home with a mocktail and a bottle of salsa. We were rooting for Carino to get a second Michelin star this cycle, because it was on-par or above the other 2-star restaurants we had visited this year. I still forsee that in their future. We went for our anniversary because we like the name and we like Mexican food so wanted to give it a try. It was very cute inside super small. We were greeted right away. I ordered the wine flight pairing, and my husband ordered a couple drinks. The first course really cool. It was a play on chips and salsa and then directly after that we had a very large pork rind. That was awesome and it was Fun to eat. All of the food that we tried was very unique and delicious. One of our favorite courses was the taco flight. The lamb tartare taco was awesome. If you are open to trying new things that are unique and really good I would highly recommend giving this place a try. There is street parking. Wow. Cariño blew me away! The restaurant is quite unassuming from the outside. The interior is rather small, with a few tables and the chef's counter facing the kitchen. The intimate nature of the restaurant is an asset. We did the tasting menu and the service was absolutely spot on - they were so attentive and so on top of removing plates as you finished each course and replacing your silverware. There was hardly any wait between courses. You could also really see the kitchen staff working their butts off getting each dish out and presented beautifully. The food of course was amazing. I couldn't possibly pick a favorite dish. Each one had great textures and flavors, and I loved the concept of so many of them. There were some flavor combinations I've never experienced before, and even though they aren't necessarily all something I would want over and over again, just experiencing those flavors was kind of mind-blowing! They are able to accommodate some dietary restrictions such as vegetarian dishes, which was what I got, and they did a great job with them! Not everywhere makes the vegetarian version of dishes seem as worthwhile as the regular menu, but I didn't feel like I missed out on anything here. I was also incredibly stuffed at the end of the night. I wouldn't hesitate to come back if given the opportunity! They also do a taco omakase, which sounds like such a fun concept. Incredible is the best way to describe our Taco Omakase experience at Cariño in Uptown. My husband made reservations for us far in advance of our visit (on the day they opened a new set of dates/times) but made it a surprise for me. We live several blocks away from the restaurant, so as soon as we started walking there, I guessed exactly what we were doing. Cariño is in a small storefront on Broadway, just south of Leland. You'd almost miss it if you did not know it was there. Once inside, it's an intimate and inviting place to be. Their Taco Omakasa is $125 per person (not including service charges and tip) and includes two cocktails/mocktails and eight-courses (although it seemed like more). During the service, they also offer an optional course at an extra charge. Honestly, this was one of the best meals that I ever had. Guests are seated in front of the compact kitchen where you watch Chef Fenton and his team of sous chefs work their magic with precision and in a symphony of motion. For the first course, they served an oyster prepared with an almost endless list of ingredients. It was delicious--truly the best oyster dish that I have ever had. Each following dish meticulously prepared and beautifully presented in synchronized service. There were tacos, tortas, and several dessert courses. Each one unique and delicious. The Cariño team works hard to create the very best dining experience possible. Even though $125 sounds like a high price, for the quality, quantity, and presentation, their Taco Omakasa is a fine-dining bargain...AND the price includes two wonderful cocktails or mocktails. When guests are seated, they present their menu of available drinks. However, because the meal is based on ingredients used for their earlier dining service, they do not present a food menu. Although Chef Fenton notes all the ingredients before serving each course, it's difficult to remember everything that was served. There was only one downside to our experience--and it had nothing to do with the restaurant or the Cariño team. There was a group of four guests who had tried to cancel their reservation because they had been partying all day long. Not surprisingly, Cariño does not allow a last-minute cancellation without having to pay for the meal. When the courses were presented, they seemed to gobble down the food like hungry dogs--not savoring the presentation or the experience--interrupting the pacing of the service. The menu was 13 courses long, with 3 amuse, 2 larger courses, 3 more smaller bites, two mains, palate cleanser, two desserts and a couple mignardises. overall nice execution, good flavors, pretty plates. some fun bites in there, a couple of standout dishes (the huitlacoche ravioli is amazing), a good tasting menu but priced a bit high. a few dishes I thought could've been balanced better but may just be my palate (less heat on chicharron, more acid for aguachile, a touch of acid for ravioli, etc.). they have a limited cocktail menu and a selection of wines mostly from Mexico or the US. Cariño tasted a lot better than other Michelin restaurants we've tried. Most of the dishes were creative and delicious. For a tasting menu, it is rare to have great courses one after the other like that. It looks fancy online and the service was professional, but they didn't have a dress code and they played casual latin-rap music. It was not appropriate for an anniversary despite the high-end plates, so we regretted picking it for that occasion. There were a lot of people dressed casually, jeans and sandals, and on their phones writing emails the whole dinner next to us. We can't recommend it for anything romantic. This experience made us realize that even if a place looks fancy, you have to check for codes of conduct. Even the Chicago Oyster House tells people to put their phones away. Wow! What an amazing and unexpected experience - unexpected because this is "only" a Michelin one star restaurant whereas this experience was way above that. Over the last 30 years my wife and I have eaten at Michelin restaurants in many states and countries and this meal was one of the most memorable and delicious among them. Each course was better than the last and the desserts were amazing. The creativity of the Chef was inspiring, and many courses and desserts were like a Tchaikovsky flavor symphony consisting of disparate "instruments" brought together for a beautiful melody punctuated by fireworks and canons at the end. As a person with celiac, one thing that was notable is my wife and I ate almost exactly the same thing meaning the menu required almost no modifications to accommodate my gluten allergy - not altogether surprising considering wheat is not a significant component of Mexican cuisine, but still unusual in my experience. The service was also excellent and we enjoyed the ambience. Overall a truly fantastic meal. read more

Plus even if it wasn't particularly for me, each dish was thoroughly impressive and beautiful. You could tell so much care went to thinking of each one. Only thing to note - Chef doesn't seem to know whether he wants a button-up flawless vibe or a low-key good-times-only vibe. I think either would have been great, but there was this constant pull between the two that made me not know how I was supposed to react as a diner. It was uncomfortable seeing him get upset at his staff (who seemed way overworked and trying their best) while he was trying to get us to talk more and have fun. If I were to visit again, I'd probably opt for the regular tasting menu experience instead of the chef's counter (which from what we could tell was ~nearly~ the same menu and less expensive) so that I can be a bit farther away from the very very tense atmosphere in the kitchen. read more

Had to end my friend's visit with a bang. Taco omakase was something I never thought I'd do but after hearing about it, I figured it would a fun time. Upon entering at 10 pm we were immediately seated and ready to begin. I started with a Mexican apple juice (Sidral I believe) and it was refreshing and sweet. The chef explained the courses pretty fast so I don't remember everything but a lot of variety. Here are the courses: 1. Began with an oyster which was the first but best oyster I've had. It didn't taste fishy and was super tender. 2. The blue fin tuna. I usually don't like tuna but this was very good and i really liked the fish eggs. 3. The third course was my favorite: a taquito with chicken liver. Super crispy and delicious. 4. The fourth was a tostada with a very tasty mole. 5. The fifth was an Oaxaca quesadilla. Finely shredded cheese covering the tortilla. A lot of truffle as well, but didn't really like the taste. 6. The first taco of the night. I thought the duck was super tough as it was a struggle for me to bite into it. My least favorite course of the night. 7. Their traditional taco course. A beef taco with cilantro and onion. Additionally, a salsa verde on the side. Simple, but delicious. 8. A5 wagyu taco that was covered in their homemade salsa. The salsa was prepared in front of us starting around the 2nd course and we took some of the extra home. 9. Finally, a mango sorbet that wasn't overly sweet, and was very fresh. Overall, I loved the experience. While the food wasn't my favorite, I will never forget the night I had and the interactions with the chefs. Memorable dishes and unique perspective to the Chicago food scene and underrepresented cuisines in the tasting menu segment, with only really Topo similarly positioned. I would be surprised if it doesn't not get a star and/or similar accolades among the other big name awards (Beard, Banchet). Service was mostly tight, but not impeccable. The kitchen seems at times a little strapped for staffing, depending on if full seatings. But these are relatively minor. I could see chef working as a makeshift expo/mixed coordinator at times. Norman also seems like a genuine guy trying his best to give the diners a great experience. I'm sure people give him trouble for being "another white guy doing Mexican", despite his Mexican family and roots. FWIW, no doubt I'd love to see more Mexican tasting menus by natives hit the Chicago scene too! But subjecting chef to gatekeeping seems unfair here. read more

This is one incredible restaurant, it is hands down one of the most unique and innovative menus offering Latino fare with an incredible (amazing) chef and and an incredible and highly and informed staff that seem to anticipate your questions and are fully knowledgeable of each dish and its ingredients being served. I admit I was a bit worried, if I over paid for this place at first, but after the last bite, I'm glad I went to this restaurant now, before it gets its Michelin 1 star. After hitting most of the Michelins in the restaurant in Chicagos, as well as when I travel, this place is definitely worth of that rating. I didn't even realize it has only been open for only 3 months. The food was great and I like how places now can show case different cultures through using the Japanese omakase fashion. Usually when thinking of Mexican food, you're thinking street food and mom and pop at a cheap cost. However they were able to use the names we are familiar with like tacos, quesadillas, etc and give it a spin on the fancy side. In addition to that, ingredients like caviar and black cod just to name a few got used as well. All in all, being a food snob this place did not disappoint.
