I was craving a shrimp burrito so I decided to come here. I have walked past this place many times but never tried it. I stopped by with my pup to order shrimp burrito to go. Evelyn greeted us right away and placed my order. I asked for spicy salsa so she recommended the gobernador salsa which was a green spicy salsa made with poblanos. Evelyn was so sweet! She gave my puppy a treat and also brought out a bowl of water for him while we waited for the food. The inside of the restaurant was really cute and colorful and they had a separate bar area for drinks. I decided to order a spicy michelada with Pacifico beer while waiting. The bartender was super nice and made my drink quickly. It was the perfect amount of spice and was so refreshing! My burrito came out quick for how packed the inside of the restaurant was. My aunt introduced me to Tacombi yesterday, and I am so glad she did! The restaurant is really cute inside, and the food was so good. I had the Mexican street corn to start and then the lunch special with two tacos, rice, and beans. I got the carne asada and crispy fish taco. The carne asada is simple with just steak and onions, but so good! The sauce and the cabbage on the crispy fish taco is really good too. I usually don't love a corn tortilla, but these tacos were so flavorful that the corn tortilla was perfect.I also had the watermelon agua fresca, and it was refreshing and not too sweet. One of the staff members, Chris, was such a vibe. He greeted us friendly and professional as soon as we walked and came over later to check on us, and chatted with me and my aunt. Our waitress was amazing too, and several other staff members stopped by to check on us throughout our meal. Exceptional service like this can be hard to find so I really appreciated it. I was just randomly walking around the area and the festive music drew me in. Reminded me of the kind of place you might see in a neighborhood in Mexico City, casual, pop up style, no frills and just really good food and friendly hardworking staff. In a way it felt like a makeshift restaurant with an urban warehouse vibe, big colorful signage on the walls, folding chairs and card tables make up the interior. It was very busy, almost every seat taken and the staff was running around taking orders with a smile delivering food and seemed to be having fun too. This is the kind of ENERGY I love!! There is a separate bar for drinks. The juices are freshly made in house, the horchata was highly recommended and apparently always sells out. I might have gotten the last glass of the night, the guy who ordered right after me couldn't get it. My quesoburrias and chicken quesadilla were very filling, and honestly I didn't need to order three, I left overstuffed haha... the waiter says I should try the shrimp tacos and cod next time. Great fast casual spot in the area. Walked in on a Friday night around 8:30-9:00, and there were still plenty of open tables (a scarcity for that time & location). We were warmly welcomed by our waiter, who gave us some tips on the restaurant favorite menu items. The food and drinks came out relatively quickly. after avoiding this chain restaurant for so many months in New York, I finally tried these tacos in Chicago. The restaurant itself is lively and opens out to the street similar to how a garage opens into a driveway. It was very packed on a Friday night and extremely loud, but it made the experience even more fun to see everyone enjoying tacos around you. definitely tough getting the waiters attention tho. we tried the corn esquites, tacos al pastor, birria taco, and carne asada taco. one thing I definitely did not like here were the corn tortillas and how thin they were, causing my tacos to fall apart after adding lime to them. I felt like the pork taco lacked a little of the spice that they're known for so countered this by adding more green salsa to add to the flavor. I was not a fan of the beef taco, especially because of how liquidy it was from the oils and I think it just didn't resemble an authentic Carne Asada taco. My boyfriend enjoyed the birria taco very much, tho! my favorite dish was definitely the corn. Given, I don't know many taco places in Chicago that are fast casual like this place. I ordered the Baja crispy fish taco and the crispy chicken taco, which was surprisingly good. I enjoyed the complimentary fresh chips & salsa as well. To drink, I ordered the hibiscus margarita, I didn't enjoy this at all. I forced myself to finish it but the flavors just didn't mix well in my opinion. Fun and lively atmosphere, and attentive service. Came here after work and started with an agua de piña. My initial assessment of a taquería is usually based on the pastor, and the al pastor taco did not disappoint. I also found the birria taco juicy and flavorful. These are the two I would recommend. Neither of us particularly enjoyed the tinga - the chicken and double tortilla were dry and lacking in flavor. Im an Al Pastor fan and its ok, again nothing special. Love the pineapple on top though. Staff here is nice and sitting on the outdoor patio in warmer months is always cool. I tried to make it to the official pop up for the Tacombi and El Califa de Leon collaboration, but turned around after seeing the insane line wrapped around the Wicker Park location. The website, Yelp, and Google pages showed they were open; however, they didn't open until 5PM today. Once open, we were seated quickly. The restaurant is casual. I appreciated that they had small coat racks for each table, which is great for the fall/winter time. The menu is very straightforward with few appetizers, tacos, quesadillas, and burritos. We ordered the tacos from the collaboration for $22, which included two Costilla and two chuleta tacos. After reading some reviews, we also ordered two Baja crispy fish and two birria tacos. The tacos came out as they were ready; service was fast! Given that this was a special collaboration with the first Michelin starred taqueria, we were most excited to try the costilla and chuleta tacos. The tacos consist of the tortilla and thinly sliced meat. It's very simple. I didn't find the meats to be flavorful on its own. Our waiter emphasized the need to use the two salsas, and I could see why. The salsas carry the flavor of the tacos. I found the chuleta to be more tender, juicy, and slightly more savory than the costilla. I felt that the tacos were overall very underwhelming. I really enjoyed the birria and the baja crispy fish taco. I will say that the tacos are on the pricier end, but they are good. Great casual and authentic taco spot in the West Loop. It's a pretty big location so they have tons of seating. They have tacos, burritos and quesadillas. You order on a sheet of paper and the waiter comes to your table to take your order. I enjoyed their al pastor and carne asada tacos. They have 3 different types of salsa at the table that they make in house, they were all delicious and went well with the tacos. The green salsa is the most mild. Man I must have caught this spot on a bad day aka an empty Sunday late afternoon....2 carne asada burritos and both were trash...meat tasted off and zero flavor in rice with no flavor and burrito tortilla was somewhat overcooked and tough....I managed to eat my entire burrito reluctantly and my girlfriend took a few bites of hers and threw into garbage. The roll down doors were up, and it was really cold inside, so it made us eat a bit faster so food would not get cold. The al pastor tacos were super good and I will definitely come back for more!
