Food - Disappointing. Over complicated Mexican classics. Both the steak confit and regular carne asada were extremely underwhelming and almost nasty. Service - Meh. Wish I knew our waitresses name but she was super curt. Price- Over priced and we were there for happy hour. 3 tacos and 3 drinks was over 100 bucks! This was my third time here. Hard pass for sure! We came here the other week for happy hour and it was a pretty solid spot. Not mad a bougie tacos when people at the grill actually represent the culture. This spot is the West Loop area but wasn't crowded and didn't have the pretentious crowds. They looked to be able to provide seating for larger groups in the front. The area in the back had some booths and a bar area with a huge selection of tequila. The margs were good. We were a big fan of the shrimp tostada and the short rib taco. We came on a Saturday night and was able to get a 6pm no problem. It's on the corner or Randolph and halsted, a busy intersection, so finding parking was crazy and the valet attendees were not there for a few minutes. The hostesses didn't have the valet's number so they said to wait by the booth outside. Given how cold it was and snowy, this wasn't a great way to kick off the night. However, inside things turned up. Our server, lady with red hair, was super sweet and accommodating. We ordered the Mac n queso and brussel sprouts as appetizers. Both were so good! Then I had the Barbacoa tacos and omg they were so flavorful and tender 10/10! My friend had the asada salad and didn't like it. She expected it to have a dressing, like a vinaigrette, but it was dressed with salsa verde and she couldn't get into it. The server was nice enough to bring her the asada tacos instead and she really enjoyed them. We had the tres leches cake for dessert, and, wow, so good. I would return for that cake alone. Wow wow wow! Their brunch is absolutely amazing and delicious. We tried the ceviche trio, chilaquiles, French toast, and birria tacos. The chilaquiles were phenomenal! Literally one of the best I've ever had, the sauce was so flavorful and the sauce to chip ratio was impeccable. The steak cooked to my liking came out great. The ceviche was very yummy and all three were just different enough to make you want a little more of each. Birria tacos were good and the French toast was good but I would order whatever the sauce is on the side, I don't like anything that makes bread soggy. We did the mezcal tasting too and that was loads of fun lol and we got to try a few mezcal's we never had before. Service was awesome and the ambiance was amazing! Went to La Josie for brunch with a friend and overall it was a good experience. We started with the salsa trio -- green salsa, molcajete, and habanero. All three had great flavor and a nice range of heat. The molcajete was probably my favorite -- super fresh and balanced. I ordered the chilaquiles verdes and added steak, guacamole, and avocado. The flavors were definitely there -- the salsa verde was vibrant and the steak was cooked well. Everything tasted fresh and well-seasoned. My only small critique would be the portion size. For the price point, I expected a bit more -- especially the beans at the bottom of the plate, which were honestly about a spoonful. I wouldn't even really count it as a side. That said, I understand the pricing given the location and ambiance. It's a beautiful space and a solid brunch spot if you're looking for good flavors in a lively setting. read more

We made a reservation, arrived on time, and checked in with the hostess. The next morning, we were surprised to see a $15 cancellation fee on our account. When we called to explain that we had shown up and checked in, we were told it was "only $15" and not worth refunding. The amount isn't the issue, it's the way the situation was handled. I've even brought my parents--who are very tough critics when it comes to Mexican food--and they absolutely love it. Anytime we have guests visiting, this is where we take them. We were steered here for a pre-dinner drink when I asked some valet guys what place they would suggest for a pre-dinner drink. They resoundingly said La Josie and they were spot on. The environment gives an upscale vibe and I love when the weather is warm and beaming through their huge glass windows along the side of the establishment. Very vibey restaurant and bar, with trendy dim lighting and high top tables. They have a ton of seating inside so it was easy finding a table for 4 on a Friday evening. We ordered chips and guac and salsa (the salsa is super spicy!!) and the guac was pretty good, and also a huge portion. We also got 2 sets of tacos and they're STUFFED with meat. I thought the tacos were pretty pricy (around $10 per taco) but it's quite filling so perhaps it's justified. Our favorite was actually the steak one that we tried off a friend's plate. The pork belly taco was my second favorite since its flavor was more complex and slightly sweet. The barbacoa felt too meaty and salty for me in general. Good and fast service too. Let just start off that if you come in thinking Mexican food, it'll be inexpensive you'll be wrong! 3 tacos with no rice or beans is $32!!! Now I will say that the up charge for this steak was CRAZY (basically the same price as getting 2 chilaquiles dishes w no meat), but that meat was so tender and worth every penny. This is a great spot for happy hour in the West Loop. It's not as popular as some of the other restaurants on Randolph but definitely deserves more attention. The happy hour drink menu consisted of $8 margaritas, palomas, and glasses of wine as well as $4 bottle beers. They had a happy hour food menu as well which had $6 tacos, elote, and fried onions among other things. To drink I had a Paloma. It came with a salt and tajin rim that I really enjoyed. For food, I had the papas con queso which were fantastic and had nice presentation. The service was standard and the vibe inside is dim lighting and louder music, yet still intimate and easy to have a conversation due to the smaller size of the restaurant. Coming here for happy hour drinks and snacks is definitely something to check out if you're in the area! read more

I found this restaurant via a friend who recommended it and it's also listed in the Michelin guide. We came for lunch on a weekday right as they opened. They're conveniently located in the West Loop with lots of street parking. The restaurant is beautiful inside and our waitress was lovely. She took the time to explain the menu to us as we haven't eatten at many authentic Mexican restaurants. They do have a very extensive drink menu with specials, but we ended up getting the Agua del Día which was Strawberry water which was delicious and tasted like it was straight from a spa. For appetizers, we got the guac with chips and aguachile verde ceviche (raw fish and shrimp). The guac was great and had fresh tomatoes, cilantro, and onions and it came with crispy chips. The ceviche with shrimp and fish was just okay and didn't taste the most fresh so I would recommend passing on this. Our main course was the Enchiladas Tres Quesos with beef and we got half salsa roja and half mole poblanco. The mole was AWESOME and I highly recommend it trying it. The dish was pretty cheesy so if you love cheese order this! At the end of our meal, our server seeing that we weren't from the area recommended some other restaurants to check out which I appreciated. From start to finish, our experience at La Josie was amazing. Great food, ambiance, and service. Their cocktail menu for tequila and mezcal drinks is really unique and our group loved everything we had. The Demonios cocktail was a nice mix of smoky and spicy and the Oaxacan Old Fashioned was great and served on a perfect large cube. If you're a fan of tequila and mezcal, their selection of pours and flights is absolutely insane. The appetizers were all fantastic. We had the chips and salsa trio, the guacamole duo, and the chorizo queso fundito. The gluten free chips were really solid as well. For dinner, we had 4 types of tacos that we all shared. The steak tacos were the favorite, followed by the carnitas, and barbacoa. The lobster tacos were okay, but our favorite. For dessert, we had the churros which was a perfect finish.
