They serve you the meat as is. You get ribs, skirt steak, chorizo and chicken. You need to eat it while it's hot it's not as appetizing once it gets cold. Shirt steak was surprisingly soft. All were strongly seasoned- no complaints. The fries we had for starch were crispy freshly fried. The staff was super nice and patient with me and our large group of 10. I'm an Argentinian immigrant and I love this place. It's a piece of home in Chicagoland. My favorite by far is the "Milanesa Napolitana", no matter if is chicken or beef, it's always perfect. And the fries on the side are always perfect. If that wasn't enough, the ambiance is always perfectly AC for the outside temperature and the service is great (every server can talk in both English and Spanish). I tried other Argentinian food places in Chicago, but La Nonna takes the crown for the one that tastes and feels more like home. read more

I was so excited to try this spot after all the reviews and ended up disappointed. I ordered pick-up via Grubhub. The food was ready as scheduled and that was probably the only thing that went well. I ordered a flan but they didn't have any so they offered to swap it out with any other dessert - there was dulce de leche coconut cake, tres leches, and tiramisu. I opted for the tres leches. For mains we ordered the milanesa napolitana and la tana pizza. The milanesa was overly salty and fries were hard and over fried. The only thing I enjoyed was the amount of cheese as a cheese lover, but cheese already has salt so I would have preferred if the steak was further salted. Fries were too crunchy. Milanesa is such an Argentine staple and it was so disappointing. The pizza crust was quite hard on the edges and I wanted a softer crust as well...wasn't cut well so we had to cut further. The center seemed quite thin and stuck to the pizza box when we tried to grab the pizza. The sundried tomatoes added a nice acidic contrast though. We also got sauteed veggies on the side - not bad but also salty. The tres leches was moist on one side and dry and hard on the other. It was also way too sweet and you could feel the sugar particles when eating the meringue on the outside - it should have been throughly incorporated. Maybe it was my mistake ordered tres leches from a non Mexican spot. I'm not sure if I would give this another try. read more

I'm kind of shocked I've never written a review for La Nonna. I mean I lived in the neighborhood for 4 years and went here a handful of times, but nothing is coming up in my list of reviews for here. Well let me just say it here, first and foremost, I think La Nonna is such a unique little lunch spot. The mix of Argentinian and Italian cuisine under one roof makes for some delicious comfort meals you just wanna share with some friends and chill for hours on end talking about nothing. Also not to mention, they make some amazing lattes in-house that you need to try. They have a separate breakfast and lunch menu that you can order from at different times. I believe after 10am their breakfast menu converts to their lunch hours. Even though I went during the lunch hours, I was able to order a hearty sausage skillet that was beautifully presented on an exclusive La Nonna cutting board. The restaurant was bustling for a Saturday afternoon, so it took about 5 mins to get a seat, but the service was always prompt. I love to keep La Nonna in my rotation of food stops to recommend to locals as I think it is a real special place to eat from in Chicago and I sincerely hope it stays in its lowkey area for a while. read more

Pro Tip: No matter how healthy you want to try to eat, and I usually do, do not forego the potatoes! They're incredible, an elevated version of those vinegar fries you get on the Jersey boardwalk, seasoned to absolute perfection. We started with six empanadas. They were good and even my daughter ate an entire one all by herself. Went to celebrate hubby's birthday. We opted for the Parradilla for two, Argentina BBQ. It came with a house salad (mixed lettuce with 3 tomatoes) and two empanadas. We had the beef and ham and cheese. Both were appetizer portions and tasted very good. Only observation was the ham and cheese was not as filled as the beef. The plate with the different meats were excellent. Perfectly cooked as ordered (medium well.) The only thing of note was there were no sauces on the meats (no BBQ, no steak sauce, etc.) I am not a fan of sauces on my steaks but I was expecting some BBQ when it's in the title of the dish! It didn't take away from the meal or the service, which was good once we were able to place an order. My hubby asked if they gave out little birthday cakes when it's someone's birthday and they said no, but then she did come back and gave him a slice of pie before we got our check. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and great tasting meal. The reason it's not 5 star is because 1) there is no parking, only street parking. It's a residential neighborhood with permit parking after 6pm. Luckily, we found a spot within a block across from a church that didn't have the signs, but be aware; and 2) there is an automatic 20% gratuity, no matter the size of the order or the size of the party. This was not posted or disclosed anywhere and came up on the receipt as a "service charge," misleading us to think we were paying this because we didn't pay cash. But after looking at the customer copy, that receipt clearly shows the service charge is actually an "Auto Gratuity". Also, the menu said our meal was $59.99 but it rang up as $62.09 and then sales tax added to that. Not sure if the $2.10 would have been what we would have saved if we paid cash. My husband (black), and I (Latina) visited La Nonna for the first time on 02/13/25. I was excited to take my husband out on a date and visit a new restaurant. We enjoy supporting small local businesses and we were excited to dine here. When we walked in we were told to sit anywhere. Cool. Then we were given menus and water. Cool. Once we looked at the menu and made our choices we weren't sure if we were supposed to order at the counter or wait for the waiter because he took a while to come back to us. For context there were only 2 other tables that were occupied. First table already had their food, and the other had already ordered. Finally he came to our table. I ordered my food (in English), and then my husband asked one question before ordering. A very simple question: what kind of chicken is used in the chicken burger (breast, patty, dark and white, ground)? He said, what? My husband asked again and the waiter seemed confused. Without hesitating, I just asked the same question in Spanish and he was able to answer me immediately. My husband was a little annoyed and asked me if I thought he was treating him indifferently. I hadn't put much thought to it and I said no, he was probably just confused because of the question. He probably just couldn't translate it because of the language barrier. As the night went on two more tables were occupied and for context again they were Americans, as in white people. We noticed that the waiter had no problem speaking to them in English and answering all of their questions. My husband asked me, did you notice that he's speaking English to everyone else but every time he approaches our table, he only speaks to you and he only speaks in Spanish? He came back to our table and asked me ( in Spanish) if everything was OK and I said yes, but he never once looked at My husband and when he brought us the check again, he only addressed me and then handed me the check and only spoke in Spanish. At first, I didn't want to see what My husband was saying, but by the end of the night, it was a little too obvious. . My husband was being treated with prejudice. What was supposed to be a date night and early Valentine dinner turned out to be a very disheartening and disappointing experience. My husband asked me if I would ever go there again to try something else, and I said not a chance. I can't support an establishment that treats people differently because of their color, and for that I will never visit your establishment again. I'll give you 2 stars because the food was decent, but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

The initial service was great, the two young ladies were very kind. We all enjoyed our sandwiches and empanadas. We really enjoyed the environment, we got there at about 12:15 and the place slowly cleared out to the point of only having one other diner - and she was sitting outside. At 2:00 pm, a gentleman walked up and in a very curt manner, stated, "Are you ordering more food?" We (party of 6) had already paid our bill and that was simply a way of saying, leave now. So we did, we left immediately and we all came to the conclusion that he was very rude. This place is ADORABLE - the interior is amazing and it's currently decorated for Halloween which made it even better . The music is quiet (which is amazing because most places blast the music) and you're able to hold a conversation without screaming The staff is super friendly and accommodating . The food is nothing short of amazing . We tried each of the empanadas (all of which are worth getting) nice and crispy! We ordered the skillets for breakfast - there was an ample amount of food and none of us were able to finish. The skillet was great , seasoned perfectly and had an arrange of veggies.
