My husband and I were visiting Houston from Austin for a day trip. As an Asian, I was determined to get great Chinese food while I was there. After reading several reviews, Tan Tan Restaurant had rave reviews among Asian people. I knew this was THE place I had to go.
The Tan Tan Restaurant serves Cantonese style food. It's a pretty big place with bright blue neon signs written both in English and Chinese. We arrived at 5:30, thinking it was too early. But we were wrong. This place was packed with local Asian people. Inside of the restaurant, there were TV monitors on the wall showing their food and fake palm trees decorated with Christmas lights. It's something else! As I walked to my table, I couldn't help to look at what people were eating. Everything looked so promising. Some customers were eating Chinese hot pot dishes, cooking them at the table. Some of them were just eating a bowl of noodle soup or Peking Duck. The fragrance of the foods was so inviting. We knew instantly we hit the jack pot.
Shortly after we were seated, we ordered hot tea and their famous House Special Rice Cake for the starter. The menu was very comprehensive. For two people it was so hard to decide what to order, but in a good way. We just wanted to try everything. Originally, we were there for a hot pot, but after seeing the amount of food they were serving, we quickly realized that it was too much for us to handle(although it was very tempting). We ended up ordering Crab and Asparagus soup and Basil Clams.
Their hot tea was quite surprising. It had an earthy flavor, almost like an Asian version of chamomile tea. We asked the server what kind of tea it was. She explained to us that it was made of chrysanthemum, jasmine and black tea. It was different, but really tasty. Shortly after, House Special Rice Cake was served at our table. The best way to describe this dish is a round open omelette with slices of rice cakes inside, topped with scallions, dried turnips and fried onions. The rice cake was pan-fried to golden brown, and the egg was cooked over medium. Every part of the dish had its own unique character. It came with a vinegary soy dipping sauce. It tasted like something I would eat in my country at festivals. The texture was incredible; crisp, soft and crunchy all in one bite. It's good with dipping sauce or without it. You can simply enjoy both ways. The feast had just begun..
Next, they brought the Crab and Asparagus soup. You commonly see this dish at a Chinese delivery place, but don't be fooled by this. This was a top notch version! It's very simple but the broth was well balanced, clean, and had a complex flavor. It had a silky texture from beautiful egg whites and white asparagus, and had a bold flavor from small pieces of real crab meat. It was cold outside, so thick soup was a great way for us to warm up. We had the Basil Clams for our main course. It was cooked with a brown, gingery, spicy sauce. The clams were big and plumped, and cooked to perfection. The clams were the lead character of this dish, not the sauce. It was spicy, but not overpowering. The basil and clam combination was a match made in heaven. It was a very complex dish.
The service was excellent. Everybody was very informative, kind and professional. We spent a little over 30 dollars for the whole meal, however this was a 4-stars restaurant experience. I would say Tan Tan Restaurant was one of the more memorable Chinese food experiences I've had including in NY, San Francisco and Tokyo and in my opinion, the best Chinese food in the state of Texas.
This place will not disappoint you. I would go there once a week if I could. Forget about typical American-style Chinese Buffets! Go to Tan Tan with a large group. You won't spend that much money and will have a food-porn experience.
Thank you, Tan Tan for the incredible meal! If you decide to expand your business, please consider Austin for the location! I will be your number one regular, I promise! Until then, I will drive back to Houston just to visit your restaurant. read more
