Came here for dinner with my mother, we ordered a "Mì thập cẩm/house special noodle" and a "salt toasted squid". We waited for a very long time before they brought out my mom's noodle dish. My mom finished her noodle dish and mine still have not came out of the kitchen (pictures attached), but everyone who came after us got their dishes. We asked for my dish 3 separate times, 2 of those times, the servers never came back, the 3rd time, 5 mins after, my dish came out missing the rice that usually comes with the squid. We asked again for the rice and it was old, clumpy rice. The food was mediocre at best, the squid was underseasoned & cold. Rice was cold. Noodle was overly salty. I'm not going to lie I'm completely disappointed, I've been eating at this place since 2009 I moved to Vegas in 2015 and moved back to Houston in 2024 needless to say it's been forever since I had tan tan over 10 years for sure. The quality has gone down completely I raved to my fiancé about this place only for it to be lack luster. The general Tso chicken was watered down. Not as crispy as I remembered it. The rice noodle was extremely bland I remember this food being soo tasteful. I've had almost everything from the menu down to the Peking duck with sticky buns. I'm heartbroken fr. My general feeling leaving this place was "Meh". Just very average Chinese/Vietnamese food for me. No issues with it, but it also wasn't outstanding in anyway. I can see why it's a local staple, because it does seem like everything is pretty consistently average, so I can't imagine people having a ton of complaints. I had not been to Tan Tan in at least 15 years and we decided to give it a shot. They have renovated it, and it is so much cleaner and nicer than it was back in the day. The food was okay. We ordered Kung Pao chicken and it had a BUNCH of bell peppers and celery. Legitimate kung Pao has chicken, peanuts, chili's, and green onion; I don't like it when they add all those vegetables which are only there to stretch the recipe out. The mapo tofu was very good and the Chinese broccoli in garlic sauce and steamed dumplings were decent as well. Everyone who frequently dines in the Chinatown area knows about Tan Tan. My family and I have been coming to tan tan for more than 2 decades and it's a staple in Houston's Chinatown. They have a very EXTENSIVE menu and it can get a little overwhelming for first timers. My go to order is the banh bot chien (house special rice cake), the house special fried rice, and the stir fried flat rice noodles with beef. Food portions are big. Most meals are meant to be eaten family style to share amongst the group. The service is pretty much nonexistent but that's pretty standard for Chinatown establishments. A long beloved restaurant by countless residents of the community and even those outside come into the area to share in on the experience. Food comes very quickly after you've ordered. Servers don't check upnon you that often, but when they do, be sure to get straight to the point or wave them over. We ordered a variety of dishes, most of which were absolutely to our liking (refer to images). Flavors are quite bold, recommended to eat with white rice. The only dish that was a bit lackluster is there a egg drop soup for which is very bland. If you prefer stronger flavors, you'll need to add a dash of soy sauce or a pinch of salt. Great food, especially if you're tired of American style Chinese and want something more traditional. The noodle dishes are my favorite, I've liked everything from the various noodle soups, to the crunchy pan fried chow mein and soft flat chow fun. The house special rice cakes are very popular and good too, I know many people that will come order just those to-go by themselves. The restaurant is huge and spacious, after they expanded the seating area, there's usually room and no wait even during peak times. We have been customers of Ten Ten for over 20 years. In the past, we usually visited with larger groups and ordered many dishes. This time, although there were fewer of us, we still ordered a hot pot, rice cake appetizer, a chicken dish, and an additional fish ball order for the hot pot for kids When our rice was served, we asked for a small extra portion of rice. We were surprised to be told there would be an additional $3 charge. That response was disappointing. While I understand that restaurants may have policies regarding extra items, it felt unreasonable to charge extra for a small amount of additional rice when we had already ordered multiple menu items. It gave us the impression that the restaurant was focusing more on charging for every small request We have enjoyed dining here for many years and have always appreciated the food and service. However, this experience left us feeling disappointed .I hope management will reconsider this policy or at least apply some flexibility when customers are already ordering several dishes. read more

Just coming here to update my review since it's been a few years, Tan Tan is still as good as ever! We came here as a party of 15 for dinner with the cousins. Service was fast, food came out fresh, and everything brings back a certain nostalgia from coming here so much as kids. We ordered their house special rice cakes (banh bot chien), eggplant w/ basil, salt toasted chicken wings, snow pea leaves w/ garlic sauce, sate seafood flat rice noodles, and sizzling beef. You seriously can't go wrong with whatever you order here though! I just recommend you come here with a big group and order family style, it's the only right way of enjoying Tan Tan! After coming here for well over 25+ years as a family, I'm confident we'll still continue to support Tan Tan. Tan Tan is THE late night spot to come with a large group on weekday nights. I used to come here all the time during college after organization events so it was nostalgic coming back recently. The best thing about Tan Tan is that they're consistent and affordable. You don't come here expecting the best Chinese/Viet dishes in the world, but it is quite solid for the price point whenever you split with friends. We had the Peking duck, flat noodles with beef and Chinese broccoli, and peppered shrimp and it was delicious. We also had a homemade peach iced tea that it totally worth getting. The service was good and we were seated quickly. The staff was helpful and attentive. The restaurant has a comfortable and cozy feel. The fish tanks are nice to look at and reflect in all the windows depending on where you sit. The prices are fair and it is totally worth visiting. I recommend you try the Peking Duck Meal and the peach iced tea. It's a great spot to go on a date with that special someone. My family has been coming here for years and although we like the food, our last experience was our worst experience yet and I'm not sure we'd go back. The appetizer came out cold, and we had to ask 12 times for our side dish to come out. They served our entrees before giving us the side dish and by the time it came out (we begged for it), we had eaten all our food. When we spoke to the manager, he explained it was 'busy' and didn't really apologize or accommodate . We went when it was not too busy, with just 3 of us at a table and it did not justify the poor service. We never saw our waiter. From past experiences, we've tolerated the poor service but there is zero excuse to not have good service considering we were a small group and came during non peak hours. read more

The service was horrible! The waiters were basically incompetent. Our food took an HOUR to come out. Tables next to us came a little bit after us, and they got their food before us!! Waiters also messed up our order, and we also had to repeatedly ask for things like chopsticks, napkins, and even RICE!! We had to ask almost four times for the things we asked. So my expectations were higher than usual. I love Chinese food and I love authentic Chinese food! I would say I wasn't happy with the food I tasted at Tan Tan at all and I was super disappointed. We ordered the hot and sour soup (no meat) and it was super sweet, worst hot and sour soup I've ever tasted it was nowhere Chinese! Today though, i was definitely annoyed about how cheap the front desk can be. I called in for Togo. I order two bags worth of food. I requested some of the pickle garlic and pickle jalapenos today. She gave me one tiny (maybe .5 oz) container of each. I asked for a couple more and they were like "only one per order"... Ma'am I have two bags of to-go... Update! I went back to Tan Tan for the 2nd time and tried out a few more dishes. Service was fast and good as always. Orange Chicken ($14.95): 6/10 First off, it looked so artificial, like my first impression was that this was not going to be good. It had huge pieces of chicken like they were not even cut. Very thickly battered, so it's still kind of doughy. I enjoyed the flavor though, the sauce was a nice sweet and sour orange vibe. The outside was lightly crispy with a doughy middle then you got to the actual chicken. Spicy Green Beans with Ground Pork ($14.95): 5/10 It was a salty, semi-sweet, savory dish. It felt very oily and it looked dark, almost like they used old (reused) oil. The green beans were also soggy. There was not too much ground pork, and it was not spicy at all. I would not get this one again. Some places I would recommend for green beans with minced pork are R house and Confucius. Simmered Fish in Clay Pot ($16.95): 3/10 Personally, I do not like fish that tastes and smells fishy. This one was very earthy and fishy. But also I am not a fish person so that's why my rating is so low. There were also bones in the fish, so be careful with that. However, I did enjoy the actual sauce it was in. It was a sweet and savory with slight garlicy ginger notes. The sauce paired nicely with the rice. Overall, on my second visit to Tan Tan, I would not reorder any of these items. As always, I have to order their house special rice cake (bánh bột chiên) whenever I come here. It comes with a special soy sauce, which I like to add minced garlic to. The rice cakes are crispy with a soft and chewy interior, and go super well with the soy sauce. For the main entrees, we ate family style and ordered walnut shrimp, salt toasted squid, flat noodle with beef and Chinese broccoli, and flat noodle with seafood. The walnut shrimp was big and coated with a delicious mayo like sauce. I liked the cabbage that came with it too. The also love salt and pepper squid. The ones here are fried well with lots of onions. The flat noodle dishes were above average. We got the dry version for both of them. We had the rice cake dish which this place is known for and I would say that was the highlight. Had Hainese chicken (they call it steamed chicken rice), duck + egg noodle soup, salt toasted tofu, and a stir fried vege dish that I'm blanking on the name that were all pretty standard Chinese food fare that was fine. Forgot to take a pic of a few because I was pretty hungry and just dug in. The thing that really knocks this place down for me though was we ordered the sizzling beef dish. I've had this plenty of times at other Chinese spots and the one we got from Tan Tan was honestly a bit insulting. Not because the taste was bad, it was probably on-par with a lot of other places I had. What was insulting was for $18.95, we were given less than ten pieces of beef. Seriously? Felt like half the plate was empty, I was honestly a bit confused and thought maybe they gave us a dish that someone had already eaten through? But evidently not. At any rate, it definitely soured the entire meal for me. Service was nice and food came out in a pretty fast clip. Ambiance is... your usual Chinese restaurant spot? Arrived 3pm, not busy and we had a table for 12. No issue getting the table. The table also has a center piece that spins so as they bring food it's easy to rotate so everyone at the table can reach items. Large portions so best to order a few entrees and share. We ordered Duck, chicken, clams, shrimp, fried rice and white rice also Congee shrimp soup (must try) Service was good and fast but the server made 1 ticket. So what we did was on the check put marks on each line like a circle, square, asterisk, x and that way the server was able to make individual checks for us. And it was very easy... I got B03 the pork with rice and it was okay, too sweet for my liking. The pickled cabbage and carrots were delicious and the rice was cooked perfectly. The fried dumplings were also okay, they were very crispy but flavor wise they weren't anything too special. It seems like Tan Tan has many items on the menu so perhaps I got the couple of items that just didn't hit the spot for me.
