Dong Ba is a Vietnamese restaurant focusing on Huế, central Vietnamese, dishes. We ordered the Bánh Bèo Chén, Bánh Lá (Nậm) Chả Tôm, and Bánh Ram Ít. My personal favorite was the Bánh Lá (Nậm) Chả Tôm. The texture soft and melted in my mouth and is one of my favorites in Houston. The Bánh Ram Ít came in four and had a crispy bottom layer and chewy, rice flour layer on top. I liked how the layer portions were equal, but my family preferred more of the chewy mochi layer. Their banh beo, which came with ten small dishes, is pretty good but not as soft as I would like and more on the denser and chewier side. Definitely go light on the chili when putting it in your fish sauce. The chili is grounded fresh and was super spicy! Overall, I really enjoyed their banh nam and would go again to eat a huge stack of them.

Recently discovered that Dong Ba had move location more to the heart of Bellaire. They are still one of the top Hue restaurant in the area. The ambiance represents the Vietnam culture in a lit, spacious, and lively way. The service is usually quite slow allowing you to pick your own table upon arrival, however, the food comes out really quick. They are known for their BBH and Banh Beo but I wanted to try something else. I could also recommend their Bun Thit Nuong which was a good size and delicious.

When I'm sad, happy, going through the ups and downs of life, Dong Ba will always be there for me. I went and ordered Banh Ram & Mi Quang - both hit the spot nicely with the central Vietnamese flavor. Services are hit and little misses, food will come out pretty fast so expect to be ready to eat soon after you ordered. This my comfort food spot, in a quite sketchy area - we went recently and another store owner was arguing with a few loiters outside, so don't expect a 5-stars parking experience here.

One of the greatest things about the Houston Vietnamese dining scene is the abundance of regional specialties, which is why places like Dong Ba are so important. Central Vietnamese cuisine is not a thing in most of America's Viet enclaves, but Houstonians are fortunate to have options and this is one gem of an option. It is somewhat off the beaten path, unpretentious throughout, and exceptionally authentic. This is my kind of place. The interior is not unlike most places in the neighborhood. Stained ceiling tiles, awkward lighting that contrasts with the daytime light coming from the windows, and stuffy ventilation (save for the fans) will ensure this place never wins awards for decor. However, the large wall centerpiece waterfalls photo and the overall clean interior with the rando corner TV ensures not all is lost. They've done a good job with with maximizing the little space they have with a good amount of group friendly seating. Food as it is almost always, is the star of the show. Their comprehensive Central Vietnamese menu is simple but also abundant. While most Viet loving diners may opt for pho, egg rolls, or bun rice vermicelli bowls, I'd recommend going fully in on their specialties. Start with the banh beo, which is served with the perfect pork cracklings and tiny dried shrimps with a nice dose of their pungent fish sauce. The same goes for the banh ram it, banh nam la, banh bot lot, and banh uot, which are all steamed dishes that serve as the perfect appetizers. In fact, shoot for a combination that includes all of the above. Fans of bun bo hue will love their stacked bowl of fresh meats and fragrant broth. Bun rieu is also excellent with a tomato'y tinge that works well, along with their com hen rice bowl. Personally I enjoyed the mi quang, a turmeric noodle douse with shrimp and pork. Throw in a tinge of their condiments and it makes for an excellent meal. The service is warm, family oriented, and quick to serve. The older woman speaking to my group and I in tieng hue (#1), which is all the credibility I need. This is currently my favorite Hue-based restaurant and I'm always excited to eat here. I am already looking forward to my next visit(s). ____________ (#1) The most distinct, least mainstream Vietnamese dialect.

During our Houston trip, I really wanted some bun bo hue and Dong Ba was one of the recommendations. Dong Ba specializes in Hue cuisine so they should specialize in bun bo hue! Came here for breakfast with three of my friends. I'm sort of glad that they have other things on the menu since two of my friends won't enjoy bun bo hue as much as I do. My friend and I decided to share an order of the thap cam and a bowl of bun bo hue. The thap cam had four different appetizers for you to try and my favorite was the banh bot loc -- great flavor and texture! The bun bo hue was OK to me. It's a bit too light on the flavor than the other versions of bun bo hue I've had. Not sure if that's how it's supposed to be? My two friends got their bun thit nurong cha gio (vermicelli noodles with pork and egg roll) and com thit nurong + bi + trung (rice with pork, shredded pork, and egg). They both enjoyed their dishes. I think Dong Ba is a great place to go when everyone likes to eat different things. The food was good but I'm not sure if I'd return if I were to come back to Houston just because there are so many other places to go to!

been coming here for years! the appetizers & banh canh are what i mainly come for, they're both so so good. these dishes are especially a bit harder to find around the city too since it's a northern speciality. the vibes of the place is like most typical viet restaurants , nothing out the ordinary. service is quick!

I honestly loved this little hole in the wall restaurant. It boasts of authentic Vietnamese food. I took my Filipino Boyfriend here to try the food for the first time and needless to say, he loved it. We both did! I will say the rice/tapioca cakes: Banh Beo, banh koc, Banh cuon, and bot loc were out of this world. The accompanying sauce was delicious, and everything was fresh. Unfortunately, the Bun Bo Hue, was not as good. It felt like something was missing from the broth. But other than that all the food was quite good - extremely flavorful and homey in the best way. We also ordered the Ca Pha Sua Da. Even for Vietnamese coffee, I'd say it was pretty strong. It had me bouncing off the walls lol. Despite being strong, I still thought it was enjoyable and refreshing. The service was good! I get shy when speaking Vietnamese and ended up ordering in English and we had no issues there. Our server was friendly, and despite the restaurant being busy, we got all of our food in a timely manner. Overall, I though we had a great experience and would definitely come back for more!

I ordered the com thit nuong. The meal was underwhelming, the meat was a bit dry and lacked the juicy tenderness that I was looking for. Whenever I get com thit nuong or com tam I am used to getting a side of broth (nước lèo), however this place didn't have any or at least they didn't bring me out any (I didn't ask). I will say that my review was purely based on what I ordered. I saw the other dishes that they serve there from the other customers and it seemed to be legit and tasty.

Highlight: Thập Cẩm My favorite place in Houston to get traditional central Vietnamese food. Banh beo had a nice soft texture with a hint of chewiness. The toppings were great but the pork skin doesn't really have that much flavor. The banh beo with the pork and shrimp toppings were so good. The banh bot loc had a good tapioca chewy texture and the shrimp was crunchy and flavorful with the soft shell on. Banh ram it was the most unique specialty I've tried and the crunchy rice flour paired with the chewy and stretchy glutinous rice ball was such a nice treat. Hospitality: Fast service. Honorable Mention: Not a large restaurant so there's not a lot of seating but enough to seat large groups.

The banh beo was my favorite dish here. Super thick and generous with the pork and shrimp. The fish sauce mixed with chili was spicy and delicious. The banh bot loc and banh it ram were also made well. As for the bun bo hue, it was good but a bit on the blander side. Very affordable prices here!

Mung bean drink. Very good. Not too sweet.

Ok parking lot sucks. There's parking but there are potholes EVERYWHERE and people just drive in every direction without caring that you're backing up. Ok I'm from the suburbs so I'm use to nice lots and slightly more considerate drivers. Rant over. Moving onto the food. I didn't know what not to order so I pretty much ordered almost everything. My daughter had pho no meat. She liked it. I had the refreshing mung bean drink, the mi quang and the Banh in the little plates. Everything was so perfectly seasoned so delicious I inhaled it all by myself. Food came out fast and service was good. To go for my dinner that night I ordered the clams with the banh trang and bun rieu oc. That was good too. Overall I'll def be back when I'm in the area.

    Kasey Z.

The food here was not super impressive to me, but also wasn't horrible! I did really like their banh beo, as it was thicker than most banh beos I've tried, and came with a lot of toppings. The texture of the banh beo with the crunchy toppings was very nice! The combo dish with the banh bot loc and banh ram did not really impress me though. I thought the banh ram it was a bit flat and I prefer Nam Giao's a lot more. The bun rieu I ordered was a decent size, and was pretty solid, but just slightly light in terms of flavor. Overall, the location was a bit out of the way from normal Bellaire restaurants that I'm used to, so I probably wouldn't make my way back here unless friends wanted to come!

Hue food or Central Viet food is such a unique part of Viet culture. It's not common to find an authentic Viet restaurant that can do Hue food right. This is a mom/pop kind of place and that's how you know you're at the right place. A sweet Viet grandma came by and took our orders. We ordered the banh bot loc as appetizers to share and then each got our own main dish. Loved the banh bot loc. It came unwrapped from the usual banana leaf. Bun Bo hue is probably the most popular Hue food and the broth was on point with the right kind of spice. It's more of a kick rather than it being really spicy. I ordered mi quang which is one of my faves Viet food. Great portion and the turmeric noodles had the perf texture. The ambience feels like what you would expect if you were looking for authentic Viet food. The menu does have English translations so easy to order if you don't speak Viet.

Their bánh khọt was crispy, sweet and savory, and went well with the fish sauce. Although the portions initally look small, they are very filling. The bò né was filling and sizzling when it came out. It also came with a side of salad. The meat was tender. I really liked the bánh khọt and would definitely come back for them. I couldn't have been more wrong. Xeo Yum (#1) as it turns out is one of the most legit Vietnamese places in Midtown serving up some of the city's best banh xeo and banh khot. Located inside of a Food Hall (#2) in the back corner, they have low-key become a destination and without question, the most popular stall in the entire place. The fan base didn't happen overnight but is a direct result of Chef Cuong Nguyen's commitment to quality Vietnamese fare. Banh Xeo is their signature item, which is also known as a sizzling crepe or pancake made of rice flour, tumeric, and coconut milk. The banh xeo holds well, is perfectly crispy, and is nicely stuffed with an assortment of beans sprouts, shrimp, and some of the best grilled pork belly I've had. Another specialty item that doesn't get enough mention is their banh khot, which is similar but has a mini muffin / cupcake like appearance made in a specialty cast iron mold. This version is wonderfully crispy and pairs perfectly with fresh greens and fish sauce with some funk. It is my favorite item here. Some have argued they also serve one of the best bo ne (#3), the Vietnamese version of steak and eggs served in a skillet. The chunks of beef are nice and tender with just a tad of char, served with two fried eggs, and a banh mi baguette with a mix of butter and spare. Normally I think of spam or sausage included with the meats, but Chef Cuong's spin is with cherry tomatoes. It's a different approach and I'm not mad at it. Folks not looking for this can shoot for bo luc lac, aka shaking beef, which is also recommended. The staff here is sweet, hard-working, and very friendly. They also make a mean Vietnamese coffee and offer free iced self-serve water. The prices are what I would expect in a Midtown food hall, and there's plenty of seating. Anyone checking out the food hall need to make Xeo Yum as part of their eating itinerary. __________ (#1) A play on the Vietnamese sizzling crepe, Banh "xeo" and yum" (#2) Previously the Conservatory and now Stestí Food Hall. They had nice flavor, but there just wasn't anything "special." 3.5* Then it was on to the crawfish, and my oh my. Superb, the flavor is delicious and unique. This more than made up for the noodles dish. The potato and corn was good too. Service - 5* Solid. When I first arrived the owner was quietly reading a newspaper and eating his own lunch. The food came out quickly and he checked in a few times to make sure everything was ok. As time went by, the crowd of folks showing up increased quite a bit and he still managed to check in on tables consistently. Pricing - 4* This is where it was odd. Always subjective but I found the noodles to be overpriced for not only the size but what I felt was a pretty simple dish. The crawfish on the other hand was priced very competitively and made up for the overpriced noodles. My parents ate the whole thing and didn't leave any leftovers. The waiter and waitress were attentive and we didn't wait long for food at all.

I never had central vietnamese food before and never heard of most of these dishes. We saw that everyone was getting the three appetizer platter, bun bo hue, and had to try it. I also got the chicken vermicelli just as a classic. But every single item in the bun bo hue platter was jawdroppingly good. I never had anything like it before. I didn't know there were vietnamese dishes that utilized mochi flour and now I can never go back. Every single item was so good. The mochi was cooked so perfectly as every bite was so chewy and soft with no hard clumps at all. The meat that came with them as well were so sweet and tender. The vermicelli plate was awesome too as you can make a wrap with the lettuce and veggies and rice noodles and they all come together to mouthwatering perfection. I found a new spot to hyperfixate on whenever I come to houston.

My favorite appetizers (in order): Banh beo chen, Banh ram it, banh bot loc, egg rolls, crystal dumplings. Personally I wasn't a fan of the paste-y texture of the banh nam but that is a personal preference! Service is not the most hospitable but very quick. We were reseated after spotting a cockroach under our table. But even so I would come back to have this amazing food any day.

The service was good, the ambience is super casual but the menu was phenomenal. They had artichoke and salmon pho! I clearly love a good pho and I was all for it! I got the artichoke pho with chicken and it was a 10/10!!! I wish this spot was in Atlanta where I live. I would most definitely be a regular. The fried rice and green beans chicken was awesome too. It was a 10/10 full flavor bomb. recommend.

There is a mural of Vietnamese landscape and an aquarium of arwanas. We started with mango salad with grilled pork and papaya salad with shrimp. Both dishes came with sweet and sour dressing. Mango was sweet and grilled pork was yummy. Papaya salad was fresh and a bit more subtle. We also ordered the fresh spring rolls. The old Saigon rolls came with mango and pork. Always liked mangoes. The other was regular fresh spring rolls with shrimp. The rolls came out last after when we got our Pho. Would have enjoyed it more if it came after the salads. I ordered the combination Pho with all the ingredients (brisket, eye round, tendon, meatball and tripe)a. There is only one size. There was a lot of noodles for the size of the bowl. They were generous with the meat. Wish they would have more soup. The soup itself was ok. Thought it was a little bland compared to others. Service was quick. It didn't take long to receive our order. They offer reusable wooden chopsticks. Will plan to try the other dishes other than Pho like rice plates next time.

This is a higher end fine dining restaurant so you should expect the portion sizes and price to be pretty comparable to a lot of other finer dining restaurants. Overall the food's flavor was fantastic. I ordered the king salmon clay pot. I thought the salmon was so tasty! They added pepper and sauce to the salmon - It was tender and flavorful and paired nicely with white rice. The quail (not pictured below) also was super flavorful and was cooked so well it tasted like beef. The soup was also light and refreshing, similar to a west lake soup. It was thicker consistency and had cilantro and chucks of lobster. The drinks served were also super balanced. We ordered the mojito and the dragon fruit cocktail. The mojito was the right balance between minty and sweet with just a hint of alcohol flavor. For the dragon fruit cocktail, it was very fruity, on the sweeter side but not overpowering and was topped with egg whites to give it a little bit of frothiness. I will say, we are slightly underdressed to enter this establishment. Everything seemed so luxurious and many people were in formal business wear! Keep this in mind if you go! There is a parking deck right next to the location as well, both self parking and valet!
