I prefer Lucky #69, but this place is good too. This is an adorable little Vietnamese cafe inside the food court at the Hong Kong City Mall. You will find a whole host of great things to eat in this amazing mall and some great dessert and drinks shops as well. We absolutely love it here and come here on a regular basis. There's a great selection of Vietnamese cafes with authentic stuff and then there is sugar cane juice right next door and whatnot. This particular Cafe is very popular and has some delicious food, so come and give it a try when you're down here. Many others do and they love it just as much as we do. It's traditional Viet though so don't expect anything Americanized anywhere in this mall.

    All this deliciousness for $7!

We were in Houston for a couple of days and decided to check out Chinatown/Vietnamtown. We ended up at the tiny food court with Lucky 9 catching our eye. After perusing the menu/offerings, we settled for lunch. Well.... Oh My! I was quite impressed! The fish soup (Canh Chua Ca) reminded me of my mom's home cooking. After consuming so much meat in the Lone Star State, this palatable sour, sweet, and spicy taste and juicy fish was definitely what I needed. The fried fish was fried to crispy, crunchy perfection. The interior was slightly overcooked, but I guess that's sort of the tradeoff right? Ask for a side of classic fish sauce, which pairs very well. The egg quiche brought me back to my childhood. A comfort food I rarely see on any Vietnamese menus. It's usually part of pork chop plates. Thus, it had to be ordered lol. It's basically an egg mixture with ground meat and fish sauce. There's variations with veggies and noodles. I thought this dish could use more fish sauce. It was a bit under seasoned. Conclusion. Very authentic and super inexpensive. The meal cost me 7 freaking dollars!!! If I didn't have an appetite of a small child, I would've sampled everything lol. :-)

I was craving banh xeo and here it is. It's a Vietnamese crepe. Bigger than 3 hands. This was semi crispy. There is unpeeled shrimp, fatty pork belly, onions and bean sprouts in this banh xeo. There was fish sauce on the side with lettuce and herbs for you to wrap. For some reason I felt like it hit the spot but I wasn't satisfied. Why?? There was flavor missing. $10 and it was okay.

$4 baby squids & veggie noodles.

Real deal home cooked Vietnamese foods serve cafeteria style. For $5, you get two scoops of main entries and white rice. For $7, you get three scoops of main entries. There are more than a dozen main options on a daily rotating system. Our party of two went with the lemongrass chickens, pineapple squid, and shell on spicy shrimps for a cheap $7. We also added a $4 small container of noodles with squids and veggies. The major disappointment was the lemongrass chickens, it tasted more like fish sauce chickens. The noodles could use some salty seasoning such as soy sauce or oyster sauce. Everything else were very tasty. Over all, a good lunch worth four stars based on such a low price and mostly tasty foods. We will go back to take a shot at the snails we saw.

My awesome to go lunch from Lucky 9! Caramelized anchovies, stir fried tofu w pickled cabbage, and some fresh made sticky rice!

First of all, they're located in the Hong Kong Mall 4 food court. Visit these ladies if you're craving some authentic vietnamese comfort food. Their ready-made items are straight up what my grandma and mom would make at home. I don't eat here often, but it's nostalgic whenever I come and browse. They were accommodating to all my questions about different items. A lunch box for $5 consists of rice and 2 sides. I ordered the caramelized anchovies and stir fried tofu w pickled cabbage today. So delicious! A great bonus for them is their food aren't oily as other ready-made vietnamese vendors. I'm eating as I'm typing on my phone right now. Lol.

Their ready-made items are delicious and super authentic, like what my grandmother would make! They have exotic Vietnamese desserts, fruits, and street food, as well as smoothies, and ice cream (bing su). They're super busy, especially during weekends. I liked their purple yam smoothie, fried dough balls, fried banana, ché (sticky rice), bing su (ice cream with fruits, ice, and condensed milk), as well as their fresh jack fruit!

The got nice wall art too, depicting the popular dishes from the north so I had my expectation and hopes up. Service is ordinary, she speaks little English but can get by ordering, we order first at the counter the sit anywhere. Braised egg is 2 for $3.50, salty but expected since it's marinated. Came out steaming hot, and yolk was not overly cooked and dry, not bad. Starting with the Chinese hamburger I felt sad and know not to expect too much from the other dishes we ordered. First the meat look different than what others have posted before, and it was kinda dry and too salty to eat. There was no other spice, only the meat juice flavor. The bun they use was stale to eat. Traditional way of making this should be the flaky oily pancake, or at least make the buns softer to eat. The mutton stew was clear and very heartwarming to drink on a cold day. But the portion is super small for the price. The glass noodles were gone in literally two bites. I had none to share with my boyfriend. This dish come with the burger bun too that you can soak them in the soup so I guess this is the extra carb make up for the less noodles. Oil splash noodle is their specialty? It was good but didn't wowed me. Noodles are chewy and well cooked, came with lots of bean sprouts. The sauce is flavorful and actually not too oily which I enjoyed more. You can add the beef for an extra charge, it's the regular braised beef, was just ok. I find it funny that their all food arts on the wall look nothing like the actual way they serve it.

Look no further for authenticity, flavor, and complexity in Chinese cooking near the med center!…read more Though we opted for more "simple" dishes during this experience, you can judge a place by if they can do their simple dishes well. The mapo tofu is one of the best we've had outside of Bellaire with spicy, savory, numbing, and warmth that you expect from a good mapo tofu. Crispy popcorn chicken is a classic that's spicy, lightly fried, and crisp. It has an authenticity that other places around can't replicate and makes you keep craving more. The portions are also appropriate for their price. Service is incredibly quick, and you can order as you go and receive your dish within 10-15 minutes, regardless of how busy they are. As for the ambiance, it's loud, it's hectic, and it's simple... maybe a stretch, but makes me feel like I'm eating at a mom and pop shop in the heart of China. This place is definitely a go to if I'm convincing a friend of Houston's great food scene! Rating: 4.5/5

On my most recent visit we ordered mapo tofu with pork intestines off the specials menu - a hybrid of two of my favorite Sichuan-style dishes. The blend of bouncy, savory morsels amidst tender, saucy tofu was at once revolutionary and so obvious; why hadn't I yet seen this at any other restaurant? And sure, innards may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's important for you to know that none of my past orders from the 50+ item menu have ever failed me, whether enjoyed in the restaurant or at home. Maybe you'd prefer the aromatic, classic, perfectly balanced three-cup chicken? Or the sweet-skinned duck, glazed so delicately that specks of sugar crystal threaten to jump off onto the plate as you pick up a juicy slice with your chopsticks? And if you're vegetarian, might you consider the punchy garlic eggplant or the wok-kissed string beans? I could go on. Do yourself a favor and come see for yourself, though I'd recommend parallel parking on the neighborhood streets behind the restaurant rather than the rocky parking lot, to save you some trouble. Bring friends and chow down family style - you'll need help covering as much of the menu as you can, but you'll definitely have to come back to try everything.

I swear it's just one really long hand made noodle, so it's a bit hard to share, but it's a must-get. We also tried the Claypot noodle and it was good as well but a bit of an acquired taste. The restaurant is located inside Jusgo grocery store. The seating is quite limited so I wouldn't recommend it for large parties. And it's pretty mom and pop, so if that's your jam, go for it. Chairs are mismatched, drinking water is somewhat self-service in small cafeteria-style plastic cups, and tables are small. Like I said - mom and pop, and that's not a bad thing. It's just not exactly a place where you would have a nice business meeting. Service was ok - nothing to note. You pay at the cashier which is like 2 feet from where you ate. Yes, it's a small space. The Shanxi oil noodle is still the best in town with perfectly chewy noodles with the most well balanced sauce.
