Stable com tam in Houston. My boyfriend took me here and this place instantly reminds me of Vietnamese com tam in Vietnam. Their rice is actually broken rice one, and the protein both pork chop and grilled chicken are very good, moist and not dry at all!!!! The egg cake is okay, could be better but still good. The owner is funny and sweet, i feel like i talk to my uncle at home lol. This place is inside HongKong market for so long, so it's slightly old but clean, can't complain. We're regular here so yeah, come try it yourself and let me know what your thought! read more

Had been craving com tam and a friend recommended this place. The plates were actually such a good size like I couldn't finish it! I like had big of a variety they had for the meats. It was so good and really hit the spot! Very good classic meal. The place is pretty big so I had no problem getting a seat and they servers are there very quickly to assist you. They aren't constantly circling but it's pretty easy to get their attention if you need. read more

Ordered the com tam dac biet A & B, definitely a mom n pop shop. missing aunties cooking? This place gives comfort cooking and recipes. You know when you go eat at that one auntie house that cooks clean so don't bother craving certain favors bc she doesn't use those ingredients, for example I like my fish sauce garlicky but none in theirs. This is the vibe here, a true home cooked dish but that didn't stop me from finishing my plate. The service provided by the uncs was lovely and swift. Food 3/5 +1 service = 4 star read more

Ahhh, their chef returned from his vacation and we came just to eat my favorite dishes: crispy noodles and pan fried noodles - with beef and veggies. Food was tasty, hot, good proportions of noodles, beef, and veggies. Service was better than at most Vietnamese restaurants. One of my family's favorite restaurants and we'll be back. read more

I've been coming to this Com Tam spot for years and the dishes are always consistent. I like that you can choose any combo that you want because other spots don't have much variety like Chao Tom, Tah Hu Ky, and Chinese Sausage. The seasoning and char on the meat are always superb and their fish sauce makes the dish! Overall, 9/10! read more

No-frills Vietnamese broken rice spot with simple, yummy dishes. The Cơm Tấm menu can be a bit confusing, but we love anything with the meatball/nem nướng, beancurd with shrimp, charbroiled beef, or charbroiled pork. The place is very basic, nothing fancy, and service is minimal, just like your typical mom-and-pop Asian shop. But the food hits the spot, and we always make sure to stop by whenever we're visiting from Dallas. read more

Tucked inside Hong Kong Mall in Houston's Chinatown, this spot specializes in Vietnamese broken rice dishes. I tried the C5 with charbroiled chicken and pork. It was both sweet and salty, and had a hint of smoke from the grill, which I really enjoyed. The pork was tender, balanced by the pickled veggies, and the egg cake on the side was delicious. At $14, it's a solid, satisfying meal--definitely worth a try! read more

The simple restaurant fits the same description of seemingly hundreds of Vietnam restaurants in the Bellaire section of Houston. Its store front is located inside the Hong Kong City Market complex. The mall storefront looks like a typical Pho restaurant with long metal tables and chairs. Nothing fancy would be an over statement. The restaurant offers traditional Vietnamese entrees in a simple, casual atmosphere. Our family shared three family-style dishes. They were pretty good. One was Shaking Beef, one was flat wide noodle stir fry, and the third was crispy egg noodle. read more

This place is an original inside Hong Kong City Mall and there is a reason it has been around this long. The food is just delicious. My go to has always been C5: roasted chicken, pork, and egg cake on a bed of rice. The chicken is incredibly juicy and moist. A little bit salty, a little bit sweet, a whole lot of yummy. The pork is well seasoned with a slight hint of char. The egg cake is delightful, perfect mix of egg to pork ration. And I love that the top is not dry (you know what I am talking about). While the meat and egg are absolute stand outs, one must not overlook the rice. This place uses the classic broken rice. The grains are much smaller than regular rice and you can definitely taste the difference. Each rice plate comes with a bowl of soup and fish sauce. Go and try, you won't be disappointed. read more

Hands down my favorite com tam place. I'll be so sad if they ever close down. I'm a simple gal who orders the thit nuong (chargrilled pork) with lap xuong (Chinese sausage) over com tam (broken rice). Located in the HK4 plaza. Love this place!!! read more

This is my favorite com tam (Vietnamese broken rice) restaurant in Houston! The plates are cheap and completely customizable with whichever kinds of meat you want. There's a bunch of options to mix and match - shredded pork, chargrilled pork or chicken or beef, meatballs, bean curd, baked or fried eggs, and more. The egg rolls are one of my favorite add-on options! The basic plate comes with broken rice and pickled veggies (cabbage, carrot) and fresh cucumber. If you're getting to-go, I would definitely ask for extra fish sauce (and check your bag to be sure they gave it to you because they can skimp) because the dish isn't the same without it. I've also had the noodles here which are good too. They're essentially the same concept as the rice but with vermicelli and slightly different veggies. This restaurant is in Hong Kong mall; once you go into the main mall entrance, go to the right and you should see it on the left. The inside is decently big but nothing fancy. Service is fine. It can be a little tricky if you don't speak Vietnamese, but there's pictures of the add-ons and the menu has English under the options so you could just point too. read more

I like this place. A lot of things to choose from. Brings back memories of being in Vietnam except I'm paying in dollar not dong. Much more authentic Vietnamese food experience compared to your typical banh mi and pho places littered throughout the city. If you're feeling adventurous give it a try. The Spring Rolls here are really good. They also wont tell you it's a "private party" and refuse to serve you. read more

I crave for Com Tam now and then. This place never disappoints. Their Com Tam Dac Biet is the special combo broken rice. It can be easily shared for 2. I find the fish sauce a bit salty. I was very satisfied with my com tam here! The portion size was huge and very cheap prices. I was quite indecisive when I saw the menu, and the waiter suggested that I can pick out any topping that I wanted to add. I got broken rice with charbroiled pork, Chinese sausage, grilled shrimp, and a fried egg to top it all off. My favorite part of my meal was probably the broth! I usually finish my whole plate of food, but the portion size had me stuffed. I also ordered the Soda Chanh (vietnamese lime soda) which I was quite fond of. Although I've had better com tam, I would for sure come here again if I wanted a quick bite after going to the Hong Kong market. read more

This is my favorite Vietnamese rice combination plate. I have been coming here for years. I also loved the infinite number of rice plate combinations that they offered. Each of us ordered a rice plate. I ordered a C44 that came shredded and char-grilled pork, egg quiche, some sort fried shrimp tofu and side of pickled vegetables. It was pretty good. We also ordered a fried noodle topped with seafood dish, which everyone agreed that it was outstanding. An order of fresh spring rolls was ordered but it was not that great. Over all, the food was great. The service was alright. Since this is almost like a fast food place to me where you can get in and out in half an hour, I rate the place accordingly for what it is. Four solid star rating is it. I'll come back here again when I venture to Hongkong Mall. read more

Probably one of the better places to get com tam. Their dac biet gives a large amount of food. It's a great price for the feast you receive. Only reason why i didn't give them a 5 star was because of slow service. Took a while to get a refill on water, not very tentative. Waitress walked right past me as i waved to get her attention. Very average com tam (broken rice). Got the C3 which is broken rice with Korean short ribs, pork, fried seafood sausage, pickled veggies, cucumbers, broth soup, and nuoc mam (fish sauce). The pork and short ribs were over cooked and extremely dry. Huge disappointment. The fried seafood sausage was great though. Other than that, everything was okay. C3 cost about $9.5. I absolutely love this place but It's sad to say that this will be my last time going here. Today I placed an order to go, and when I got home to heat my food up I noticed a little surprised waiting for me underneath my dinner. There was a dead cockroach in my to go order (pictures provided below). I've been a loyal customers for years but instances like this really taints my confidence I have with the restaurant. First, the staff is not friendly our waitress just seemed extremely annoyed and unhappy. She was flat out rude. Second, the restaurant itself has really weird decor, with wall paper peeling off the walls, and a bunch of junky decorations piling up on and behind the counter; I don't get the vibe of a clean kept restaurant. Third, the tables are gross and sticky and even when they wiped it down it smelled even worse, like a combination of fish sauce and dirty dish towel. When the rag you're using makes the tables dirtier it's time to change them out. Finally, the food here sucks. I had com tam bi thit nuong which is the broken rice with shredded pork and grilled pork and I added a fried egg. Over all the food wasn't that great everything was really dry they can't even fry an egg correctly. I will go out of my way to make sure I never return again. read more

This place serves up a decent broken rice platter. Situated within the confines of Hong Kong City Mall on Bellaire, it isn't a bad option when it comes to looking for a nice plate of rice and other Vietnamese fixins. Can I get a com com? It's a great find inside Hong Kong Market. It's not very big but seats quite a lot of people with long tables running from front to back so don't be surprised if you end up sitting next to people you don't know. (Reminds me of a lot of pho style restaurants in San Francisco) My cousin suggested this spot and it was a fantastic idea. We ordered the spring rolls and the #30 (grilled pork, egg cake, shredded pork, and chinese sausage with rice). It was a lot of food. The spring rolls are tightly wrapped with shrimp, lettuce, vermicelli, cilantro, and fried wonton (what my cousin said it was)). The peanut sauce was ok, tastes a bit different than what I'm use too - we couldn't put our finger on what it was but it was different) The rice plate was plentiful and everything tasted good. They have a large selection of goods from soups to rice plates to vermicelli bowls. The staff is pretty attentive and the prices are reasonable. All the above with two ice teas was only $22. WIN! Oh, and this is a CASH ONLY spot! read more

We had an early lunch here today and were very pleased. The food is tasty, the service was lightening fast and the prices were quite reasonable ($18 lunch for two). The menu is extensive and was a bit overwhelming at first, but there are helpful (and accurate) pictures so I felt fairly confident in my order. I decided upon C26 - shredded pork, baked egg and shrimp paste and I added charbroiled shrimp. My boyfriend had C36 - charbroiled meat ball, shredded pork, baked egg and Korean BBQ beef, but he substituted charbroiled shrimp for the meat ball. The food was served within minutes of our order. Each plate consisted of a generous portion of steamed, broken rice topped with piles of our choices, garnished with sliced, green onions and accompanied by lettuce, tomato slices, and a delicious pickled (?) cabbage and carrot mixture. A bowl of broth and a small bowl of fish sauce were served on the side. The food was flavorful, but I was a little surprised that the shrimp and the shredded pork were served room temperature. They were still tasty, but I guess I expected everything to be piping hot. The baked egg was actually a flavorful mixture of egg, thin rice noodles, mushrooms (?) and chopped pork (?). The shrimp paste was a chopped shrimp mixture molded around a slice of sugarcane. The shredded pork was actually very thin matchstick pieces of pork mixed with rice noodles and was quite nice. However, my favorite of all the selections was the yummy BBQ beef. I had hot tea with my meal and my boyfriend had the lemonade which was delightfully fresh-squeezed and just perfect. We really enjoyed being able to try a variety of dishes. We will definitely be back and look forward to trying even more of their menu!!! I highly recommend this place, but suggest that you come early because it gets really crowded at lunch!!! read more

The mom and I were wandering Hong Kong mall when we were drawn in by our rumbling bellies and the crowd of people. While their speciality seems to be in abundant rice combos, we both ordered the bo bun hue and iced Vietnamese coffee. I'm glad we took a chance because our food really set a sparkle in my mother's eyes. This place is LEGIT. I want to say this is the first time I've had actual pig blood cubes served! Not only that, but there were also meat balls and pork. They for sure did not skimp on the meat. The noodles were a great size and the perfect amount of springy. Each bowl came with fermented shrimp sauce to enhance the soup and I was quite pleased to see purple cabbage amongst the veggies. The spicy sauce they served at each the table built a good level of heat over time. If I really had to nitpick though, it would be that the soup itself was light and not as hearty as other places's. If I had to guess, they probably make it from prepackaged base. The iced coffee was strong and good. It was refreshing to see it served classic drip and saucer instead of premixed. Something about pouring it myself makes me happy. Their service is lackluster and I do question the cleanliness of the tables, but that's nothing new given it's Chinatown. I'd definitely visit again. read more

Lettuce begin. The reason why I went to this place was because it looked crowded, so it had to be good. When I was there, I ordered the C1. C1 is there everything/combination dish and it had different types of meat with rice and vegetables. Along side, I also got che ba mau (three type dessert) C1 one was good, but the meats were too dry for me. The che Ba Mau was good, maybe it's because they added a lot of sugar. Service wise, the severer were kinda sassy (I'm not rude!). But a plus was that they accept credit cards! Because most places don't around here. This place was alright, just a typical Com Tam restaurant. I recommend this place if you want desserts. I don't really recommend the C1. Peace Out Girl Scouts. read more

I was on a lunch break and met up with some family to get a bite inside Hong Kong Market. Hands down, rice dishes were delicious. I wasn't expecting much when I first walked in, but it brought my appetite a satisfying sensation. To begin my story, we first were looking for Pho Dung, but their lights were off, chairs were put up on top of the table, no one was there, and obviously the open sign was shut off. So we walked around to the other side of the market and found Com Tam Kieu Giang. It was my first time visiting this place so I had my doubts up and wasn't expecting to receive much out of a meal here. I browsed the menu for a couple of minutes and noticed they have a lot of items and different combinations listed. Lots of rice dishes for sure. I went ahead and ordered my usual grilled pork and chicken, egg cake (most restaurants don't carry this anymore), veggies, and crushed steamed rice. It also came with a bowl of broth soup. I enjoyed eating all of it. It's really filling and the price was just right. Not expensive at all and you can try to finish all of the food on this plate. Be advised, your stomach will definitely grow by the end of this meal. Service was above average and the restaurant was definitely busy during this lunch hour. Not too crowded where you couldn't move around though. They have lots of seating room so bring in the crowd if you'd like. This spot is actually well known. I spoke of it to some of my friends and they said their folks eat here every now and then. read more

This used to be my go-to place for com tam. My dad took me here all the time when I was younger. I found a new com tam place I like better. Com Tam Ban Toi has bigger portions and better food at the same price. The male owner of Kieu Giang is unfriendly and cheap. He wanted to charge me for extra silverware. The female owner though, is really friendly. One time, she allowed me to use my credit card even though it was under the minimum. I would go here for their lemon milk drink. It's pretty big and cheap. I would eat here again if they improved on their portion sizes. read more

Visited over the weekend for a business lunch because a friend said she heard good things about this place. The friend noticed that many reviews and tips said they were cash only, so she called ahead to confirm it. The woman who picked up the phone said they accepted credit cards and not to worry. The menu was varied with plenty of staples that I enjoyed from other establishments and the service was fairly good. When the food arrived we were all rather disappointed to see that the Hainan Chicken plate only had wing joints and rib cages and very little meat. The other dishes were about a 3 out of 5. The big problem came when I received the check. The waitress took my Visa card without any issues and said she would be right back. After about 5 minutes, she came back and asked me if I had another card because the owner says they didn't accept "credit cards" from businesses. I was perplexed. I went up to the counter and asked to speak with the owner. She kept pointing at my card's imprint that showed my business name AND my name. She asked me for another card, so I gave her my personal MasterCard. Again, she had an issue. She said they did not take MasterCard and that I should walk across the street to a Chase bank to get cash. I was pretty mad now. I had and asked her again why they told us over the phone that they accepted credit cards and then played games and acted ignorant when it came time to pay. She then said that their credit card machine was down and was embarrassed. I called BS on that! I looked behind the counter and she didn't even have a machine! I paid with what cash we had and asked for my receipt. She only hit the "No Sale" button to open the register for my change so she didin't have a receipt to give me. She told me to keep the table receipt (itemized with all the food) and did not reflect my payment or change given as my receipt. We tipped the waitress 20% because it was not her fault and we clearly could see she was embarrassed at the scene the owner caused. I am NOT coming back again and I encourage everyone who reads this post to beware of this place because of their deceitful practices and of NOT properly recording their sales to cheat the tax paying business owners who actually ring up their sales and pay their taxes. This will no doubt catch up with them....... read more

Wow. I can't believe this place was actually on yelp. I enjoyed the crushed rice / broken rice dishes here. They have basically everyone combination of items you can put in a rice dish. The best "C5 with fried egg instead of baked egg" I have ever had in my entire life. I've been going here since back in high school and it is still delicious every time I've come back. My plate includes some meat (idk what it is, it's just good) and grilled chicken that is so tender, I do a little happy dance in my chair when I eat it. Your dish is always served with fresh veggies (cucumbers, pickled something or another, and lettuce) and side of broth. The nuoc mam, aka fish sauce, they give you tastes great and compliments the dish really well. Only small con is that it's cash only and gets really packed on the weekends. But you do what you gotta do for some good noms. Sorry I can't give a better report on this, my mouth is watering to a point of overcapacity thinking about this. read more

When I come home to Houston, all I want to eat is Vietnamese food. Sure I like eating at all the pho and the banh mi places in SF, but sometimes I just want a huge plate of rice served by surly waitresses (you know the food has to be good b/c people sure aren't coming by for the service). Regardless, Kieu Giang (which my mom translated as "pretty river") serves one of the best rice plates in town. Their specialty is com tam, or broken rice, which is basically rice served with grilled pork, sunny side up eggs, and bi (shredded pork). I normally just get the rice with the grilled pork and egg. The bi, I admit, is a bit of a acquired taste but give it a try (or at least get someone unsuspecting in your group to get it and then try it!) You'll also get a side of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and pickled veggies along with a tiny bowl of fish sauce and a bowl of steaming hot broth with onions. My dad loves this place b/c of the hot broth. He complains that other places serves the soup lukewarm and my younger brother has on occasion sent back the soup to be reheated (winning him no fans in the kitchen, I imagine). At around $7 a plate, two people can easily share one and be full. The menus conveniently display pictures of the pork, bi, shrimp paste wrapped in tofu thingy and the other items in case you have no clue what to order. Just get what looks good! read more
