Baos here are the best here, IMO. Definitely worth a trip to snag some delicious baos. Located in the busy shopping plaza of Hong Kong Market Plaza, this store is on the Ocean Palace side. There should be doors to enter the plaza from there, hook a slight right, and you'll see the store. Mind you, this is CASH ONLY, but the gal now accepts Zelle, which is pretty cool. There are many types of baos to choose from, but my family's go to is the #1, Thap Cam (pork, regular egg, and sausage), which goes for $13/box of 9. The ratio of meat and steamed bun is great! So satisfying! There are also baos with different kind of eggs, meat, veggies, or even taro. You may request for them to be deep fried if you'd like, I believe for $4 more. One of the better Vietnamese banh bao places in Houston. It is located on the far side of HK4, so it might be a bit hard to find, but you'll know it when you see a bright green store. I got a box of the #1 thap cam, and they had really good ratio of dough to filling. The filling was seasoned just right, and this one came with part of a regular egg. There is also a quail egg version of this if you like quail eggs better. Okay, now I'm Vietnamese & when I moved to Houston, all I heard about was this place! I absolutely love it & anytime I'm in Bellaire, I'll go here & get some baos. The fried baos are their signature (in my opinion). When our family visits from out of state, they will get boxes of baos to go & eat on the road trip. The lady at the counter was extremely rude. I just asked for an extra plastic bag to wrap the container because I had to travel 5 hours home. She looked at me like I was demanding a million dollars. I don't think these baos here are fresh. My mom bought one to try. I believe I heard the lady microwaving the Bao. They should have fresh steam buns like other places. Right when I opened the box, I didn't even want to touch it. The skin was darker than the baos I normally eat. I like it white most of the times. The skin was also on the rough side. It wasn't chewy and it was pretty dry. The inside was ok but for sure you can taste/tell that it wasn't fresh. I had my fair share of baos and this is not a place that I will return. I like their fried Banh Baos. Its a bit on the pricey side if you get them fried but worth if you eat them fresh. Its crispy on the outside, super flavorful and soft on the inside. Depends on what kind you like but i can the standard one w/ egg meatball (i think its dac biet). Their phone doesnt work so you cant order in advance. Some places make their dough too sweet but TP has their flavors down. I like the ratio here. Their banh bao is actually smaller than usual but I prefer them that way. They sell them in a box of 9. I had both the fried and steamed Banh Baos! The filling inside matched my expectations of a traditional Viet Banh Bao (pork and egg). The fried Banh bao was a novelty that I haven't seen and I applaud their creativity for creating such a scrumptious snack. Overall, they were tasty but very pricy for the tiny size. Located in the Hong Kong mall strip, next to Crawfish Cafe, towards the end. I walked in and there was a letter size paper menu on the wall with prices. This used to be the place that I had to stop by almost every time before heading back to DFW just to grab some banh bao for myself and my parents. Their banh bao must be really popular to start being sold at some of the Asian markets in DFW. Finally got a chance to come back to Houston and had some time to pig out in China Town, of course I had to stop by here to get some fresh banh bao to bring back to my parents. To my biggest disappointment, for once, there was not a single Asian person working here, not really a big deal, it just kinda gave me a sense that the owner doesn't care as much anymore to man his own store. Secondly, which is also the deal breaker now, they don't make fresh banh bao anymore. The only fresh ones you can get are the combination without egg. Everything else is either cold or frozen, unless you get the fried ones, which they will throw the cold one in the fryer and deep fried for you. If I wanted cold banh bao, I could just go to a nearby asian market in DFW to get some, I didn't wanna be rude and walk out without any, so still got some combination ones and some fried ones. Deep fried banh bao is a gamechanger. I love steamed banh bao and their non-fried ones are top notch. They have the perfect dough to meat ratio and are quite delicious. However, having their deep fried banh bao changed my world. I had never ever considered that my favorite Vietnamese treat could be improved on, but the crispy outside of the deep fried banh bao was phenomenal! The taste and texture is like having a donut with savory meat on the inside. I might be on my way to having coronary artery disease now but this is definitely a treat that I'll indulge in once in awhile. In terms of the store itself, it's in the Hong Kong Mall a little ways off from the main entrance. The store is small and has a counter where you order. You can see into the large kitchen where the deep fried magic happens, but the ambiance of this restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. This place is located inside of Hong Kong City Mall 4, on the far right wing facing it from the front. It doesn't get much traffic through this side so they basically start cooking up your banh baos when you order it, meaning it can take awhile before you actually get your food. I order 8 total little balls. I had 2 of the regular steamed and 2 of them deep fried. I must say deep fried seemed like it would be great, but in reality, it's a really greasy mess. It's just not an item that tastes better because you fry it. I also had 2 of the BBQ normal and 2 deep fried. I admit it, I was a Hater even before I tried it. But when my cousin said he wanted to get some Banh Bao Chien Gion (Fried Banh Bao), I immediately said "EEEeeew! Only in Texas!" But moments later we found ourselves at T.P. Banh Bao to pick up some standard Steamed Banh Bao ($6 for 9) and Banh Bao Chien Gion ($11 for 9). As we ordered, you could hear the oil sizzling in the kitchens so I was glad to find that our Fried Banh Bao would be fresh. Moments later, our box came out and although I was stuffed from Dim Sum, I knew I had to make room for a few bites. The Banh Bao were piping hot so we split them open to cool them off. I was pleased to find that they were quite filled with pork--no skimping here! After a few moments we bit into the Banh Bao and I was a convert! WOWZAH! The "bread" was crispy and not the least bit oily like I had imagined. It was definitely a different dough they used from the traditional steamed banh bao---thinner and slightly sweet. And the filling was really flavorful. Huh...who would have thought. Those Texans....they'll fry anything! :) ps.
