Damn you early flu season! I've been under the weather lately, and I wanted nothing to eat other than pho. I strayed from my original "Pho Tai" and went with the "Pho Ga," which is a chicken pho. It....was....AMAZING. Exactly what I needed. Thick cuts of white meat chicken in a savory chicken broth. I'm used to adding sriracha, hoison, and veggies to my pho, but this needed nothing added. Tan My is the shizzy! Being that I live in Dallas, I come here every time I visit Austin. This is "THE HANGOVER REMEDY". I have been to a few other pho places in Austin, but this place wins no doubt. Tan My is a bit of a drive from downtown, but the food makes up for it. I went this past Saturday and decided to pig out with pho, beef fried rice, and spring rolls One of the top tasting pho's I've had, some of the best spring rolls, and awesome beef fried rice. The portions are hearty and the price is cheap. I paid for our table of 6 (I ate a meal for 2)... the price? $56!!!!! The staff is very nice and the owner/manager (guy with a 2 inch beard attached to his mole on his cheek) even came by to see how everything tasted, which i find to be excellent customer service. I went in once and got their Bun with chicken. The chicken was not impressive, and I think I remember it being cold as well. This means it's the same chicken they use for their Pho. It's not bad, but it's not what I'm used to with my Bun. The last few times I've been there, I've gotten Pho with chicken and have not been disappointed. In fact, both times I was sick or just getting over being sick. Let me tell you this: That is some damn fine Pho. The broth is killer. The veggies are fresh, and the combination of it all will certainly kick the crud right on out of you. The family that owns is is super nice, and always make me feel welcome. Not only is this the best pho broth I have had, it is the only place I will get both the eye round and flank steak in my pho, knowing the meat will be tender and gristle-free. This is a Vietnamese guy reviewing a Vietnamese restaurant. I have read the previous reviews, which led me to try it myself. This is far from authentic Vietnamese cuisine. This looks more like Chinese with the greasy sauces the ingredients are soaked in. I walked in expecting a healthy meal. I left with the same guilt after eating Chinese buffet. Well what can I say? I'm a definite fan of this hidden treasure of noodle heaven! I was led here from a co-worker told me about this is close as authentic as you can get in a Vietnamese restaurant. I go here typically at least once a week for lunch and of course its a bit packed but somehow we get to find a open spot to slide right in. Be warned that this ain't no private booth corners. Personally, I do not mind as long as I don't elbow smash someone when I get my noodle slurp on. The menu has a lot of typical Vietnamese dishes but for some odd reason I can't move away from this death grip of goodness called "The Won Ton." I just kept ordering the same stuff since its so good to hardly move away from it. I had ate some Won Tons from various shops from my personal experience and this one can be one of the best. Seriously, you will not see many shops that offer a heavy tempura battered shrimp topped so that the crispiness will be soften up to the broth. Another cool trip that they can offer the "dry" version of the Won Ton Soup since it contains everything except all the broth (still. they put some on the side bowl if you want to sip). I'll most definitely will try out the dry version and maybe.. just maybe if I had too much Won Ton Taste in my pallet that I can try out the other great dishes they put out. Most of the time I get greeted by the owner when he checks out and talks to the customer to see how's things and any feedback on the entrees. Even the owner's wife helps out in the place as well. We used to frequent this place 5 or 6 years ago, but I've only been a couple of times since then. This time we went for lunch, and both ordered bun (bowls of vermicelli). He got curry beef, I got lemongrass shrimp (I asked for it with eggroll, but I ended up with a plate of eggrolls rather than eggrolls cut up in it, oh well, I cut them up myself), and we shared some tofu spring rolls and some hot tea. Everything was pretty good ... the bun was a bit different than at most places (or than I'd had before at Tan My/Tan Tan) because it didn't have lettuce and sprouts at the bottom, instead it had cooked veggies (broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, onions) in some sauce on the top with the meat. Usually bun is dry except for the fish sauce you pour on. I usually pick the lettuce out, so the different vegetables were a plus for me. The curry dish wasn't spicy but it was easy for my husband to make it spicy since they had 3 different spicy condiments there at the table. It also seemed that the place was much more popular than when we used to visit ... it was about half full when we got there, but by the time we left people were waiting for tables. Also nice to see that they now take credit cards ... but not so nice to see that entrees have gone up by about a dollar. Even though it's a bit different now, it's good to see that our favorite Vietnamese place in town is still around and still serving good food. read more

I ate here months back and had the Pho Dac Biet (that's the big mix for all those that don't know). Good soup. Good quantity. I've been coming here since I can remember as a kid, and that's been some time. The broth of the Pho, is by far the most tasty and consistent base I've had. I crave it after a hangover, when I'm off of work, a rainy day, you name it....it's pretty darn delicious. I've had Pho all over the city...and there's just something about this place that stands out from the others. When you know you don't have to add sriracha or plum sauce or anything else....and you just drink the soup alone, that's when you know they did it right. Upon recommendation by my local Austinite friend, we tried out this Vietnamese restaurant this weekend with my family and we liked this place for few reasons (still feel the need to try other places before I rate this one properly since this is our 2nd Vietnamese restaurant we tried). I must warn you about MSG in their soup selections. We talked to the owner and he said it was necessary to use it for their soup. Needless to say, we went home and drank plenty of water to cure our MSG blues. Service was mediocre, but the food was tasty enough for me to want to come back (couldn't they NOT use MSG!?). We came from San Jose area in California where #1 Vietnamese food is presented at many restaurants. So it is REALLY hard to compare these places with our favorite Viet restaurant in Redwood City, CA. Service sucked too, but their food is outstanding and everyone goes back anyways. For the love of food. My mom and my husband had their usual order of PHO. They both liked it, but tasted too much MSG right away. My SPICY BEEF soup was delicious, but again too much MSG for me. Ok, service is wonky due to the awkward young guy serving us, but not bad. But holy crap. This pho is incredible. I mean, it isn't. No one else come here. We ordered the pho ga (him) and pho with eye of round and brisket (me). This is the best broth I've ever had, and I used to live in Asian central (Irvine, CA). We ordered the meatballs on the side. We had the vermicelli with pork, shrimp; egg rolls; broken rice with pork chop/egg and iced coffee. The iced coffee and egg rolls were good. The egg roll was a bit too fried (had black spots at the end). The pork in the vermicelli was tough. The broken rice was a disappointment because it was watery and almost tasted like the rice was old? This isn't what I expected because I read rave reviews on yelp. Tan My is four and a half stars to me. This clean, unassuming strip center restaurant is currently my husband's favorite place for Asian comfort food. He gets the lean beef pho (number 9, I think). The broth is rich and beefy and the meat is nice and lean. They give you all the accoutrements- lime, bean sprouts, cilantro, jalapenos and a variety of sauces. I get the vermicelli bowl with grilled pork and shrimp...yowza. It comes with the meat, noodles, lettuce and sprouts. The pork is grilled so that it is almost caramelized with sweetness. I throw on some hot sauce to spice it up and sometimes the plum sauce too. This place is a great value! read more

So when it comes to Vietnamese food im a fanatic. Growing up in Houston surrounded by great Pho restaurants, and having close Vietnamese friends has made me into a harsh Vietnamese food Critic. In Austin, i always ran across "pretty good" Pho and Bun, but nothing close to what i eat in Houston. So, I came to grips with the fact that Austin was just not in the same league as Houston when it came to my Viet favorites.... Then 3 years into my college career I came here. One of my close friends took me to Tan My after a road trip. I was immediately greeted, and knew it was my kind of Pho shop (no bells and whistles, no booths, no fancy light fixtures, and no tv's, just a couple of tables and some posters on the walls). Yet i was still confident that it would be comparable to my other Pho experiences in ATX . Until i received my Fantastic Large number one. It was absolutely delicious, the broth tasted amazing, and lost none of its luster when i added my unusual, "more than necessary" amounts of sriracha and Hoisin. It was also full of meat, sometimes i feel like alot of places just add more broth and give you a bigger bowl, not this place. After that initial expereicne, i have been back to Tan My several times, and find it hard to eat at any other vietnamese restaurant in ATX. i love this place. read more

I been comeing to this store for about 13 years and it used to be my favorate pho restaurant. I moved away for 2 years and came back expecting same kind of service and was very disappointed. I didn't even get to try out the food so this review is only on service. 1. I went in and no one greeted me so I just sat down. 2. I waiting for about 3 min before a hispanic lady just came by and slamed my water on the table. Yes she hit it so hard water flew out of the cup. No manners. I even said he and she ignored me or she don't known how to say hi. 3. Waited another 5 min or so but waiter still didn't come by and hispanic lady left the cleaning cart next to my table and the smell was bad I started to gag. It really smelled like rotting food which you can expect from a restaurant dumpster in back. I lost all my appetite and left. Tucked away in a corner of a strip mall in north Austin... and right around the corner from an Asian market housing many other Asian stores and a few restaurants is Tan Tan. I went to eat there with a large social networking group. Specializing in all sorts of Pho soup ( beef broth with noodles and meat) and options for the more unusual ( a friend ordered her Pho with shrimp and squid) I found Tan Tan a terrific warm meal on a cold night. The wait staff spoke minimal English, but communication was possible through the use of numbers. I ordered my number 9 and egg rolls. The food came quickly even for a big party ( there were 15 of us) and the egg rolls were addictive. When there was a problem with my order ( the lo carber in me asked for the Pho soup without the noodles. Needless to say they were a bit shocked by the concept ) the correction was immediately made. Downside: They do not accept credit cards yet, so bring checks or cash. All of the food is really inexpensive. So got a cheap date? Want to impress but keep a close hold on your check book? My kids got me started on Tan My Restaurant. We try to meet up there about every two weeks. We have always found the wait staff to be friendly and helpful when trying to determine what to pick. You don't go there for the ambiance...so don't pick it for a first date place! My favorite is #57 (i think) I have NO idea what it's REALLY called, but I call it a Noodle Boat...because that is exactly what it looks like... a huge noodle dingy! They take noodles and fry them to perfection and fashion it into a large long dish which they load up with a fabulous blend of meats and veggies! I never can eat the whole thing and everyone else at the table tends to munch on it with me. The Pho is very tasty and always fun to dress up with all the extras they send out to the table. The eggrolls have always been fresh and crisp. (sorry bout your experience luke g.) Never been disappointed...In fact it's about time to gather the troops again! read more

I think this used to be Tan Tan's. The Pho is very different here than the other places. Its tastes unique and the eggroll in this place was very good. It was Long and thin, without vegetables and very tasty. I used to order to go from here all the time. Their Pho is a little sweeter than most places but not as sweet as Kim Phaung. The broth packs a punch without being too salty. their size of Pho is very disappointing though. Half of that of Pho 888. Their speed sometime is a bit slow compare to other places. The meats are sliced thiner than most places and for the most part tender. this place is very close to Pho Van. Sometimes I chose Pho Van instead because of their speed and slightly larger portion. But this place should definitely be tried by pho fans. read more

Clean clean broth. Clear broth! A rare thing that I forget is a possibility for pho at a restaurant! It's the kind that makes you feel like you're 6 years old, at home, and your mom scoops out all that nasty gunky fat from the soup when it solidifies.
