This place is my ultimate comfort restaurant. My family has been going here since before I was born and even now it is still our weekly tradition. We've been going here since it was still named Tan Tan. #iykyk The owners are extremely customer service oriented and always come by to make sure my meal is perfect. My usual order here is Mi Xa Xiu Kho which is a dry egg noodle soup with bbq pork. The broth comes on the side. Make sure to use all the accoutrements in your dish, add the bean sprouts to the broth, and make sure to add the vinegar into the noodles. This will result in a perfect bowl with the perfect bite. My brother is always the one ordering different things and his favorite is the birds nest, I always make sure to grab a chunk of his while he's looking the other way. Also their Ca Phe Su Da is dessert for me every time, even when I'm there in the evening. I dont get the hype this place got. Their bun bo hue tastes nothing like bun bo hue. They don't even use the right type of meat, and the broth tastes like it belongs to a bowl of mi bo kho. The wontons' fillings are bland, the wonton noodle soup was salty, even though the noodles were ok. If you want authentic vietnamese food this place doesn't have it. read more

My fellow Yelpers didn't let me down with their good reviews of this hole-in-the-wall. I tried their Pho during our first cold snap of the year, via delivery. I ordered Pho Tai Chin (beef pho with rice noodles, brisket, and rare eye of round) with extra basil, and they followed all of my special instructions to the letter. They also thoughtfully supplied hoisin sauce and fresh chili sauce (not sriracha). I also got Hoanh Thanh Soup (pork broth with thinly sliced bbq pork and wontons). I added chili sauce to this, which was a good choice. The broths had deep flavors and are probably the best I've ever had. The vegetables were super fresh, crunchy, and generously supplied. With 5 stars, I may be adding to the hype, but I've never been disappointed with a visit here. Why is Tan My so excellent? - generous portions. Eat 2-3 meals for less than $10! Their vermicelli bowls use the Large pho bowls, but fill them with noodles and cover the top with meat. I was tired of chewing but the bowl looked basically untouched. Good to also know that I would fail at any eating challenges. - quick service! Servers are quick to ask you what you want within two minutes of sitting down, so it helps if you're prepared. If you keep brushing them off because you're indecisive (me), you may have to flag them down by the time you're ready.. ten minutes later. Food also comes rather quickly. Yay! - it's delicious. Came here during my recent Austin trip and my friend and I were both craving Asian food after a couple days of Tex-Mex. My coworker had recommended this restaurant, so we decided to check it out. They have a large selection of dishes on their menu, so it took me forever to decide what to get. I finally decided upon #19 (hu tieu ga), which is ride noodle soup with chicken, as I wanted a lighter noodle soup. I liked the flavor of the soup broth, but unfortunately the chicken came in large chunks and was very dry and flavorless. I hate wasting food, but I really had to slowly pick at my chicken slowly in order to force myself to finish it. My friend ordered one of their standard beef pho's and she enjoyed it. I think I just ordered the wrong thing. This was another cheap meal...paid about $25 after tax and tip for the two of us. The menu was very expansive and had a wide selection for rice dishes to noodles, pho, and appetizers. I got the Vietnamese flat noodles with beef for $9. This review has been a long time coming. This has been my favorite Pho and general Vietnamese food restaurant in Austin for 4 years and still going. I respect them a lot for doing takeout only during all of COVID to protect their employees and patrons. The quality of their food has not gone down at all even though take-out noodles with broth dishes are sometimes iffy. They package noodles and broth separately and give you generous portions of everything including pho toppings. This is the highest quality pro beef broth I have tried in Austin and pho is my favorite food so I have tried virtually all of the Pho restaurants here. This is also a family owned restaurant. Unfortunately due to Covid, Tan My was not open for dining inside. I ordered the grilled chicken with eggrolls with vermicelli, a spring roll, and for the next day grilled pork over rice with an egg. I have visited Tan My in the past for Pho and todays order was just as good. Everything was made fresh to order, all the meats were grilled to perfection. Did take out due to COVID! My roommate got the chicken pho which I felt was just okay. They soup didn't taste as rich or have the classic chicken taste that I've had from other pho restaurants. But they still provided all the vegetables so props for that! I got the vermicelli noodles with pork. I felt like it could have used more things besides just the meat and noodles, but that could just be me, since I haven't tried this dish in many restaurants. I came with a large group and was happy to see that they accommodated us well, even though it was super busy (there was a line forming outside as we were finishing up). The place seems to be family-owned and the service was super friendly. I ordered #55, which was a flat rice noodle dish with beef, chicken, and shrimp. They were super generous with helpings of meat, and I especially enjoyed the sweet and juicy shrimp. I liked that they included a decent amount of vegetables to accompany the dense textures of the carbs and meat. I did develop a bit of a sore throat afterwards from all the grease and oil, though, and I feel like for $11, there are better places to get flat noodles. The pho is usually the same when you start adding sriracha, veggies, and hoison sauce. SO, IT IS IMPORTANT TO SIP THAT BROTH BEFORE ANYTHING, which I fell in love with its broth. You could tell how fresh the broth was and how much time they took to make that broth. That's why I would, to be honest, like to get vermicelli and get side of pho broth. I had stepped in here a couple years ago and never had the chance to eat here despite only being a few blocks from my place. But the upside to quarantine is a lot more food delivery and trying to make sure to get food from local places. Working nights I have a pretty strong feeling on how a place packages any noodle soup and I was so excited to see they do an excellent job of splitting things up to keep the rare meat from overcooking or the noodles from getting gloopy. The large is soooo much food so plan to have two sittings most of the time. The seasoning and freshness were perfect. Boy oh boy, the Pho Battle is heating up around here. Just when you think you found your #1 option (mine = Saigon) along comes someone else who vows to take over. That's where Tan My comes into the picture, I am very impressed. My sister discovered Tan My in '99, she loved their high quality ingredients and tasty broth. So after networking and spreading the word manually (since Yelp was a mere zygote then) we started visiting My Tan weekly for lunch. They soon became a staple in our diet, and if there was ever a Platinum My Tan Pho Card, we would be at the first to apply. But alas, times change, the sister left Austin for Chicago, I changed jobs and traveled 100%, new competitors arose, and the weekly Tan My lunches abruptly came to a halt. But as the years passed but Tan My continued to sustain with it's loyal customer base as I was happy to see them still doing well after all these years. The bottom line: The Pho here is damn good, and the broth is so tasty that I declare it the best in town! In fact it's so tasty that you don't need to season it at all (unless you want it spicy hot). They must put some coriander or nutmeg in it because it's always spot on. I usually get the Pho Ga (chicken) but recently had the #9 Pho Tai Chin and it was phenomenal! That alone puts them at the Top 3 (IMO) in the Austin area, a solid 4.5 stars which rounds them up to 5 stars. The meat is very good quality, as far as portion sizing is concerned I think their regular sized bowl is slightly smaller than other places (Saigon), but it's still well worth it. This place is small and quaint, gets packed, and voices do carry, but the owner here is extremely nice and the customer service here has always been excellent - - they never miss a beat on drink refills. Super easy ordering - we looked at the menu, called in to order and drove by to pay and pick up! The restaurant isn't opened for dine in, but they make pick ups so easy! The portions are huge. It fed me for a good 2.5 meals and a good ratio of meat, rice, and vegetables! I know they are always busy at lunch/dinner times. Bun bo hue is not for the... faint of heart. You have to be adventurous. :) This place is as authentic as I know. I'm not from the region that this dish originated so I only know from other restaurants. It comes with a cut of ham hock, some pork blood chunks, brisket, and various vegetables. This noodle soup is much spicier than other soups that everyone is more familiar with, it comes spicy. It uses a thicker rice noodle also that is the perfect for this soup. So my review is really only for their Bun Bo Hue. I know from another friend that the cook is actually from the Hue region so it's probably as authentic as you can get. This review is for the noodle sooups only. I have not tried their rice/vermicelli/stir fry dishes. This is your best option for pho (beef noodle soup) in Austin. The hu tieu/mi (rice noodle or egg noodle soup in pork broth) is also good. I like the combo hu tieu mi seafood. They also have decent bun bo hue (spicy beef noodle soup). A few of my friends like their bun bo hue, it's just not my thing. I prefer pho. Compared to all the other pho restaurants in Austin, Tan My has the best pho broth, not salty like Pho Saigon, and not bland/oily like Pho Dan (do not ever go to Pho Dan for pho). It is not the best ever, but it is for Austin if I really need a bowl of pho or hu tieu.They give you a lot of meat, not that I like a lot of meat (I prefer more noodles than meat). It appears their takeout orders are larger. I usually don't eat egg rolls at a restaurant because we make them at home, but my brother does love their egg rolls. Prices are average for Austin. One of my absolute favorite places to get the perfect bowl of pho with a perfectly balanced broth. However, my boyfriend, who's been coming here for a long time, suggested I try the number 42 (I think) as it was basically a bowl with all my favorite stuff in it. And oh boy it was. Crispy pork rolls, with delicious charbroiled pork over vermicelli noodles under a sweet fish sauce. The perfect summer bowl. I'll be thinking about that pork for a long time...
