Being a child of the South (Austin), my college career was filled with trips to the original Taco Deli so imagine my surprise when I first discovered this location while back for work and staying north. The set up is the simple: enter and head to the counter to place your order. Menu boards decorate the space above the registers and be sure to check out their daily specials. My go-to tacos are: potato egg and cheese, Jess Special. and/or the Vaquero for breakfast and the Heather, Freakin' Vegan, and Fontera Fundido for lunch; all in whole wheat tortillas. No matter what I pick they all get dunked and slathered in Salsa Dona. For real-don't sleep on Dona.   Service is always pleasant. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable and happy to make any accommodations/modifications needed. The restaurant has also always been clean, with staff cleaning and resetting the dining area when someone finishes and departs.   While I have ordered tacos to go my preferred visit will be dining in to enjoy my tacos fresh and hot with Salsa Dona refills just steps away. Next time work has me up this way I will definitely be stopping by to kick-start my day in the spicy right direction. read more

This used to be my FAVORITE location. Even during COVID I supported this location with my pick up orders. I return after a year away and it's not customer service focused or very clean. I understand overhead, but if someone asks for larger pieces of lime, TRY to accommodate. A guy really did try, but the woman seemed to be in charge and basically scolded him for trying to assist me. Bad form! I won't return to this location again. Spyglass location really is the VERY best and your food comes out looking like someone cares! read more

I came on the 5.19 and there was a confusion with my order with the food running passing it to the wrong person. When i paid they asked for my name i said jimmy and she thought i said jenny i just agreed anyways figured noone would come name jenny and it was going to be quick come to find out the person behind me was named jenny but it seemed her husband maybe placed the order but they gave it to her by accident go figure anyways they made things right.. gave me a extra taco, and a gift voucher.. i had a bit of an annoyed look and a bit of a attitude but she handled it well, felt genuinely sorry and just want to say idk her name but i hope she sees this and is recognized my management.. they always do a great job conversating with everyone and they've always been on point everytime i came that i felt compelled to write this. This location is only a stroll down the sidewalk located right off of Gracy Farms and Burnet rd.. I always use the online order portal to place my order, so I can't really speak on the service but my food is always ready when it was told to me.. Somehow in the years I spent in Austin, I never made my way to a Tacodeli. Maybe it was my aversion to breakfast tacos, or maybe it was some weird preconceived notion that it was just another one of those gourmet taco places (when Torchy's was all the rage). But it seems Tacodeli has endured, at least long enough for me to visit, and it was certainly worth it. Their tacos, yes, that gourmet style you see all over the place, have a quality of freshness to them, and while loaded, are not overdone so that you feel awful afterwards. I love this place. I didn't realize this is considered a fast food place in Texas, and that there are so many locations throughout Austin. We stumbled upon here on our first full day. I really liked it! It was very flavorful, light, and at a comfortable price point. I ordered the taco with beans and bacon - that was quite savory. I find myself thinking about these tacos a lot now that I'm back in California because it was such a great meal. I was surprised to find that I got full off of two or three tacos, the other taco that I got had avocado, bell peppers, onions, and eggs. That one was my favorite. Tacodeli is solid. I would have to say that the food is not quite up there with Torchy's based on taste and originality, but I will admit it's still really good. The people that work at the different locations I've visited are so much cooler, nicer, and more willing to help compared to Torchy's. Too many hipsters in one place isn't a fun time. I would have to say that my favorite tacos are their breakfast tacos, but the Frontera Fundido is the bomb. The Frontera Fundido comes with your choice of meat plus sautéed poblano onion rajas and Jack cheese. It's awesome. Called the store to cancel my order within 5 seconds after I realized I had chosen the wrong location for pick up. The guy said he would cancel the order later that day. Called them again after 2 days and apparently they hadn't done anything to cancel the order. Waited for another two days before I called back. This time they said they had started issuing a refund but the process could take up to 3 weeks :) I called again today and the assistant manager told me my order was never refunded. I wanted to try taco deli as I have seen it passing by (huge mistake) tacos were flavorless and definitely not edible. The service was great but the food was terrible I had order the barbacoa and my hubby got the sirloin steak. My taco was falling apart the corn tortillas weren't holding up. The horchata was actually really great and so was the elote but the rice had no seasoning whatsoever my own dog wouldn't even eat it. Came here for breakfast and it was ok!! I got the build your own taco with egg, chicken, and pico de gallo on one taco and chorizo, spinach, and avocado on the other taco. My first tack was pretty good but I didn't really like the second one. The chorizo was not very flavorful and was pretty dry which is weird bc chorizo is never usually like that! Tacodeli's tacos hit the spot after a long, busy day. The birria taco running for a limited time is the best birria taco I've tasted. I'm excited to try this taco again! The tacos contain the perfect level of spice and flavor. I'm never disappointed when I try the variety of tacos available. I've also tried the guacamole and chips, but the guacamole is always super spicy, which throws me off each time. I'm not used to having guacamole with that level of spice, but if you love spicy guacamole, you will love the guacamole at Tacodeli. Overall, if I had to recommend just one taco at Tacodeli, I would recommend you try the birria taco before the special ends. Hopefully, they decide to keep that one on the menu. Jeez, I still like Taco Deli but it feels like every few months they make the menu more and more restrictive. They now took away the ability to turn a taco into a bowl, which is a bit baffling -- along with removing all of their platters in general. This is also after they've removed daily specials, and a lot of their more interesting options. So glad I tried their specialty taco of the month - short rib taco. Delicious. Different than the usual. I love tacodeli food so the change in the taco being a short rib taco.... Hell yes. Got my usual barbacoa and elote. I cant order from there unless I can have the elote. Hands down some of the best I have had. Took a chance on the hibiscus berry aqua fresca. My hubby just picked up lunch to go , I ordered a tacodeli bowl with chicken. So so disappointed. The chicken was so dry and seemed like day old cooked. The bowl has rice black beans salad and guac. If they place Tacodeli on a pedestal and tell you that THESE are the best tacos in Austin, well then you know that they are well educated, schooled or versed in the intricacies of tacos. If not, then you can thank them for including Tacodeli in the list, but know that their judgment on food is somewhat questionable for not suggesting that Tacodeli is the preferred of all of the taco places that they suggested. How am I able to make these statements and suggest that Tacodeli's tacos are the best? Well I've been eating there (and occasionally other taco places as I'm drug to them by "friends" or coworkers) for many years (I can see my history here shows I have a Tacodeli review from 2011 ... 14 years ago) and I can say that Tacodeli uses fresh ingredients and provides a wide selection of delicious tacos that are each carefully considered. I tell out of town visitors what I often eat and then say "but you can't go wrong -- all their tacos are great." I have had MULTIPLE vendors that I have brought there from out of town say that they questioned the idea of a taco place for lunch (yeah they were from out of state) and then after trying it made a point to tell me how great the food was.
